luckymom30ParticipantCan anyone recommend someone locally (that charges a reasonable fee)for computer repair? My husband has a laptop that has been infected by a Trojan virus and he can not do anything on his computer, he has lost his Internet Explorer access and several websites we have never visited keep popping up asking for money for products we do not want.

KenParticipantI can fix it. I work for donations and only in the amount you feel is fair. If anyone in the family is unemployed, on SS/SSI, disability or other public assistance, the work is free. Get quotes from any local store.
I am not supposed to lift more them 10 lbs for the next two weeks, but I can fix it if you put it on my bench :)
my google voice number is 206 801-0349 (8010fix) which will ring all my phones.
My email is linked to my name above. References available from many of the denizens of this blog.

KenParticipantNo he has not. Most people get trojans now via malware and social engineering/social networking sites.

KenParticipantLooks like I can’t sleep so let’s list a few tools that might help.
To start with, it sounds like you have one of the classic “scareware” programs. Often stealth installed via email from infected social networking sites users. Most are not really dangerous in the classic “data loss” sense but many of the recent ones allow piggyback of much more dangerous malware.
Try downloading and running malwarebytes from the authors site.
Use the free version. (Load firefox if IE will not open: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html ) If it fails to download or will not run after download, You can try changing the name of the setup file or loading the file on a usbkey or cd from another computer after changing the name.
Scareware:

antivirus xp 20xx is one of the recent nasties that is multipart and stealth. It may also include a trojan backdoor that allows other scams and rootkits access to your computer at some point whether you pay or not.
The site below will help you understand which family of rogue you might have. Note the names are changed slightly and the scam rolled out again each time commercial AV software locates a signature to scan for.

Call me if none of these links help. I (and many others) also answer questions at the above site.
More detail on emerging versions are available here, mainly as a wild list.

mommymParticipantKen is awesome – we took him our desktop and laptop both which were infected and he worked his miracles to get us back up and running. He was fast, so kind and we couldn’t thank him enough !! (Thanks Ken ! ~ Mindi)

celeste17ParticipantI have used Ken several times and he is great. He tried to get an older laptop to get working but it was more serious than we could afford. He gladly answers questions via email and is usually available with a phone call. Use him if you can.

miwsParticipantKen was a big help to me when the power supply died on my computer a few months ago.
He even made me feel better when he mentioned that my Antique, nearly seven year old Dell was still good for several more miles! I’ve always figured a computer is obsolete once it goes out the front door of the store, because at the same time, they’re bringing the next generation of it in the back door. ;-)
Also, if you have any old computers and/or parts sitting around gathering dust, get ahold of Ken and see if it’s something he can use.
Donations of parts and such, are what help him provide his services at low/no cost to those that are eligible.
