There aren’t any such arguments. Certainly none have been presented here and in the things I’ve read and listened to I see nothing that isn’t about prejudice, hate, and fear. The thing we’re seeing mostly is craven cowardice on the part of many commentators (it is sad to hear Howard Dean buy into the baloney) and lots of denial from those repeating the list of fake arguments of their own prejudice.

I listened to an interview last night that he gave to Keith Olberman. He sounded like an idiot. He had no point. His argument for his stance was disjointed. Makes one want to scream at them. He suggested that there be a “sit down” to discuss the issue in a “peaceful” manner, and maybe come up with a compromise, but kept saying that they have every right to build there. When pushed to expand what he meant by “compromise”, he had no real answer. That’s because there is none. How far away is far enough away? In stead of two blocks from GZ, should it be 4? There’s already one there at 4 blocks…so should it be 6? 3 inches? What? Who is doing the compromising..certainly not those who object. Again, it all boils down to one thing…the only reason this is an issue is because they are Muslim, and too many people believe that Muslim= terrorist. It’s prejudice, plain and simple.

This dilapidated property sat there for 8 years for sale. No one wanted it, no one wanted to develop it. It is derelict, has fallen into disrepair. Is that respectful to the area? People didn’t care about that. There was no groundswell of protesters saying that letting the area 2 blocks from GZ rot is disrespectful. Enter in the dastardly Muslims who decided to take this derelict building, build a cultural center, with gym, cooking school, a prayer room. Oh, my, no, we can’t have that. Tell me this isn’t about prejudice. Give me a good argument why this is an issue all of a sudden that has nothing to do with these people being Muslim. I’ll listen.

Glad you posted as I forgot to go earlier today. Just walked over and really didn’t see any noteable or blowout deals either. The beer aisle was empty aside from a bottle or six pack or two. Wine aisle 1/3or less remains. Magazine’s empty. Greet cards not discounted. Everything else seemingly as normal tonite – (edit) a stocking crew was even in replenishing Produce dept, as well as other aisles. I know it’s over, I just can’t let them go.

It’ll be a tough year without them! I just realized I won’t be able to go there at Midnite, on foot, to get a Rug Doctor. :(

oh, good grief…let’s not lecture, OK? Between GZ, and the location of this “mosque”, that everyone says is going to be disrespectful, there are porn shops, head shops, strip joints. Is that respectful of the area? Does anyone bring that up? Has anyone petitioned to tell these people that they can’t have what they want there? Of course not. Apologies for sounding cranky…guess I am a little cranky this week.

I had a cat who made it to a ripe old age, but the last 2 1/2 were a slow, steady deterioration much like what you describe with your ole’ puddy tat. Mine was a female, so a bit different in that regard. But you mentioned the weight loss and over all weakening condition and that rang a bell with me.

As she aged, I had regular “geriatric panels” done on her to monitor a variety of things which are indicators of different kinds of conditions. The one I recall the vet pointing out as most significant was a gradual kidney failure. In the last couple of years, she drank massive amounts of water and became thinner while at the same time her behavior(s) changed. It appeared to me her version of a kind of senility. I don’t know that it was in FACT that, but the way it presented to me it was. Eventually, she would just kind of wail as if her day to day experience was absent of a sense of well-being. There was little I could do to bring her relief of whatever it was which distressed her so, all day and all night. All this time the only thing the vet ever saw was that diminished functioning of kidneys. Even so, it was my decision to let her go. I just knew, after so many, many years, she was absolutely miserable. It is a hard decision which every owner of a geriatric cat has the potential to face. It is different for every animal/owner about when the time is right.

It was so very hard to let go when I did but for me it would have been selfish not to. No amount of rehydrating her, or protecting her or any thing would reverse her condition. She was distressed and confused and disoriented and fearful and just was no longer herself.

The vet told me I was doing the brave thing, instead of waiting for the absolute end and complete shut down of her kidneys. I did not feel brave, I can assure you. I felt very sad to lose such a long-time companion who seemed to be asking me to help her. It’s tough.

JoB, I’m having trouble matching up what you’re saying with what I’m saying . . .

My main point is that good people are going to be hurt by this mosque, “prayer room,” or whatever you want to call it. (There’s also going to be a 9/11 memorial there by the way which, ironically, may be part of the problem.)

You, like dobro, seem to believe that everyone who feels the way I do on this issue is in on some kind of conspiracy . . . But why don’t you address the AP article I linked or the comments that the American Muslim guy made?

I’ll give you a tip on how to argue your position, on this or any other topic. And I mean this in the most sincere way, because I want to continue having interesting debates with you:

1. Avoid using terms like “hate mongering,” “inflammatory comments,” “invented controversy,” “careful orchestration,” etc.
2. Don’t spend a lot of time talking about your opponent’s motiviation.
3. Try to discern as soon as possible whether it’s facts you and your opponent disagree on, or rather interpretation of the facts.
4. If it’s facts you disagree on, go out and get better, or more credible, facts than your opponent has. Establish the credibility of your sources as quickly and strongly as you can. Don’t try to discredit your opponent’s facts or sources until you’ve already established some of your own, and then try to discredit your opponent’s facts —only as a last resort.
5. If it’s interpretation of the facts that you disagree on, argue accordingly, but try to keep an open mind throughout, because interpretation of fact is much more variable than questions of accuracy or relevance.
6. Use sarcasm and hyperbole sparingly, and only for effect.

Example of how you should be making your case on this:

It’s a prayer room, not a mosque, David. It’s part of a much larger commercial project. It’s only going to be X x Y square feet. It’s not going to have a dome. It’s not going to be visible from GZ, etc. This is information New Yorkers aren’t aware of.

You know, I think people are getting bent out of shape over this. Some people [not you, David] are using this to bash Muslims, and that worries me a little.

Example of how you should not be making your case:

What’s your game, DP? What’s wrong with you? Don’t you understand the facts of this case?

I’m open to having my mind changed on this, JoB. In fact, I almost had myself convinced of the other side for a second there . . . But you’re going to have to come up with something better than “you’re part of a conspiracy” to make that happen.

So go ahead and be tough on my arguments.

Just watch what you say about my chupacabra.

They were recoating the tank (slightly more involved than repainting) and doing some structural upgrade/repairs to the roof. They covered the reservoir a while back (due to a Council Ordinance which arose from concerns over terrorism after 9/11) and the City policy is, once the reservoirs are underground, put a park on top. Why waste the space? Similar projects are all over town, such as what is now Cal Anderson Park.

Anyway, ordered decking from Stewart Lumber down on Rainier and had an awesome experience.

@JoB – as for the scruffy appearance, as condodweller said, try living by it. I’m all for a little scruff around the edges – definitely prefer that to a sterile Blahvue look – but their appearance goes well beyond scruffy. It’s downright sh*tty. They’re like the crappy neighbor on your block that has multiple disused cars out front up on blocks and trash overflowing into their yard. There’s a difference between having ‘character’ and just being a nuisance.

I never saw this thread before either and I will have to say I would have both Rants and Raves about Alki. We bought our house a little over 2 years ago and they were they first place I went shopping. They had a reasonable delivery charge and decent prices, and for me, same day delivery. I couldn’t have been happier. I soon realized I needed my own truck and went there to grab a few dozen 2×4. When I went to pick them out, they were some of the worst lumber I had seen. The guy helping me commented that a real carpenter could make them straight. Really? So I didn’t go back for a while. Slowly I went back for a few things here and there, all good. This past spring I need some custom Trusses and 7 squares of cedar shakes so I called them for a quote. They were about 25% higher on the shakes (Bought from Issaquah Cedar) and more on the trusses (Bought from Tri County Truss). So while I would go there in a pinch, they are never my first option any more.

The young Republicans call it the “How to look Revolutionary and still not get laid”. There’s a bike detour coming up very shortly. I can’t find any information about it on the SDOT Spokane Viaduct site http://www.cityofseattle.net/transportation/spokanestreetdetour.htm.

The detour is located, when heading into the city, east on Spokane St north side path, to south on E. Marginal. Signage for the bike detour is up and very large – which is good since there is a metal chain link fence that will block the entire regular bike/ped route to the E. Marginal/Spokane intersection.

It looks like cyclists and pedestrians will be routed through what used to be part of the truck layover parking lot. I didn’t notice any signage as I rode southbound on E. Marginal directing me to travel through the detour area to the west, presumably the route will be better marked in the next day or so for those cyclists traveling southbound who are headed west to the lower bridge.

There is a tricky part – the west part of the detour “path” that transitions from the sidewalk on the north side of Spokane St to the paved parking lot is gravel. This gravel portion (consisting of 1″ gravel pieces) is on a slight curve as well. I was amazed enough this afternoon to stop and gape at it for a moment; if I hit that gravel traveling my normal speed on thin tires I would very likely loose purchase on the surface and skid/fall. I did not see any “GRAVEL” or “LOOSE SURFACE” signs in the area will be so cyclists be warned to watch for this. I have encountered this type of situation in the past at another construction site that did not have a warning and it was not a pleasant experience.

I’ve contacted SDOT with some questions and will follow up.

While not directly tied to the road diets of Admiral and NE 125th, it is a product of the same impulse that led the City to screw Nickerson and indirectly, ourselves. GM Nameplate, an under-the-radar manufacturer will be moving 400 jobs to Kent due to a “road diet”…Actions, even dumb ones, have consequences.

As to Admiral and the speed limit–lets face it–the majority of drivers in West Seattle have been driving for 20+ years. A 4-lane boulevard should not have a 30 mph speed limit. Generally, we all know what’s acceptable for such a street and drive accordingly. And surprise: the accident stats (from the City) suggest that Admiral has a lower accident rate than most arterials. Hmmm, perhaps the people who drive Admiral are driving safe despite exceeding the (absurd, IMHO) 30 mph speed limit. Yes, there was the grisly head-on earlier this year, but I think others have pointed at contributing factors (a curve and ethanol).

I would favor leaving Admiral as-is, posting signs prior to Olga uphill clearly stating the speed limit is decreasing from 40 mph (I can dream, can’t I?) to 30 mph (like the one in Issaquah on Front Street). After the Olga bus-stop I can see the logic in reducing the speed limit–an off-camber turn (see the former tree planters) and many streets/driveways, and if we are lucky, sunshine.

Nicole Brodeur’s opinion column is the same stuff we saw last year with the Fauntleroy road diet. People complain about lost capacity beforehand, but it all goes away after they see that things don’t move any slower, the road has a safer, more predictable feel to it, and oh yeah, two-lane arterials are more pleasant to live near than four-lane freeways.

I bike so naturally I have skin in this, but the benefits to drivers and other users is being seriously underplayed (I drive too!). Bike lanes are the most visible change, but I believe the greater benefit would be for the car-driving part of me. Now 35th has a lot more cars moving down it so I don’t know if it’s viable, but can you imagine if people turning left off of 35th had a lane to pull out of traffic while they waited instead of blocking – and wasting – a whole lane of “capacity”?

Any road that doubles as a used car lot is in desperate need of a “diet”.
