I don’t have a high-end regular bike. But I do have a high-end electric bike that I got from Alki Bike and Board, and I took my previous electric to them for about 8 years. So 10 years as a customer, and I can’t imagine a better bike shop. I’m sure things mess up from time to time–that’s inevitable. But I’ve always found Stu and his team just incredibly helpful–trustworthy, reasonably priced, caring about what they do. Pretty much everything you’d want. To me they’re the equivalent of my beloved Foreign Car Workshop (except FCW doesn’t sell cars), where we’ve been taking our cars for 20 years. I’m sure the other places that people mention are fine, but from all my experience, I’m delighted with them.

SLTJAF, it’s actually illegal to put them in the garbage (no matter the container used) in the city of Seattle, despite what your husband’s doctor says. It’s allowed in other areas of King County, but not Seattle. Please see the disposal rules here: http://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/health/communicable-diseases/hiv-std/patients/drug-use-harm-reduction/needle-disposal.aspx

Jan, I’ve always just taken my sharps container to the transfer station (which I understand is a challenge for you without a car), but if you find another local option, please let me know. The one time I had to go over there, they all seemed really confused as to where they even go and I ended up on line for a while as they figured it out.

anonyme: As a new-ish Building owner in White Center I can concur with you that something needs to be done — for the last 3 years we have had to hire private security and literally camp out in our parking lot with water and hoses to keep our building from burning down — there was a fire started in our shrubs ( 2 different years) by some people letting off fireworks in the parking lot next door that with a little gust of wind could have burned the whole block down. luckily we were on-site and called it in immediately.

It has become my least favorite day of year where I live in fear b/c it’s White Center, can never go out of town or just enjoy the day with my family. Why they are legal ANYWHERE is just beyond me and agree with a Statewide ban. I have racked my brain as to how to make a change but you are right, since law enforcement clearly publicizes they aren’t going to enforce anything I always come back to then why bother.

Animals suffer from PTSD, and many pets in West Seattle (as well as their owners) have been so traumatized over the extreme, over-the-top use of fireworks here that they react at the sound of the first pop. This year, my cat went into a kind of shock/terror, where he became an immobilized blob trying to sink into the floor, licking and drooling. When I picked him up his limbs remained rigid, just like the animals you see rescued from situations of severe abuse. No amount of tranquilizers help, NOR SHOULD ANYONE HAVE TO RESORT TO DRUGGING THEIR PETS DUE TO THE LAWLESS AND RECKLESS BEHAVIOR OF OTHERS.

The police have the gall to actually announce on TV that they will not enforce fireworks violations, and the only admonition goes out to those who might dare to call 911 to report abuse. There has always been a kind of backward approach to criminal behavior in Seattle. Commit a crime or exhibit outrageous behavior, and you get a slap on the wrist at best, with most people turning away in a passive aggressive manner. Complain about, or confront such behavior and you.will.be.punished. It seems to be a form of virtue branding, with many Seattleites congratulating themselves on their “tolerance” – even when said “tolerance” creates a situation that is dangerously intolerable, or, to put it bluntly – just plain stupid.

Offhand, I’m thinking of a few things we can do to stop this. First, we have a new mayor and eventually a new police chief. Pressure must be brought to bear on these officials (include Herbold) to begin to enforce the laws of this city. Second, work on the restriction of fireworks sales, in White Center and elsewhere. I personally think the ban should be statewide. A valid case can and should be made that explosives should not be sold recreationally. Quite frankly, most fireworks use seems to have devolved to this category. Third, citizen action. At the very least, gather widespread audio/visual documentation of the scope of this activity, especially on the 4th, accompanied by affidavits of complaint and/or an online petition demanding that the law be enforced. The documentation could be supplied to numerous sources, both governmental, civil, and journalistic.

There are other actions citizens could take, but then the lines begin to blur in terms of safety and legality. Of course, fireworks violators have already shown their contempt for such things but there’s no doubt in my mind that they would be the first to squeal and demand protection were they to be confronted.

This year, let’s make it happen. Or rather, let’s make it STOP.

Are cats safer indoors? Yes. But I’m with EdSane in that I believe their quality of life is better if they can go out. It’s in their nature to want to be outdoors. My last cat lived to 17. As she got older, she spent more time indoors than outdoors, which was natural too.

My current cat is 10, and as a small kitten, she once jumped off a second story balcony in her desire to roam the outdoors. I learned pretty quickly that trying to keep her indoors was futile. She loves being outside, and goes out in rain and snow. She is the kind of cat who greets people walking past my house, and she’s introduced me to people on my block, because they always stop to pet her.

I do worry about the risks of letting her outside, and I make sure she’s in at night. But I believe the risks are worth it for the richer life my cat leads as a result.

I was just in the True Value, and around the corner of the isle from me I overheard the nicest conversation. A customer got the attention of a floor manager, and said he just wanted to compliment one of the employees. He named the employee (I don’t recall, sorry!), and had some really great specific things to say about how he’d been treated at the store that day. It was just such a nice thing for him to go out of his way to have such treatment recognized, and it was really heartwarming to hear. I agree, too; I always feel I’m going to get highly informed and courteous service at their store. So great work, True Value, thanks to your kind customers, and happy holidays!

So glad you were able to get that fully cleared, mytwocents, and online(!!). I had a hunch that must be an option nowadays.

As I mentioned above, I already worked downtown at the time so was able to walk down to the courthouse on my lunch break. I always felt for those that didn’t work downtown and would have to take time off work, and potentially have to pay for parking and where just paying the ticket was easier and cheaper.

I love this place. It’s clean, welcoming, the food is absolutely delicious, and the staff are outstanding. Be sure to check out the fridge, where homemade salads and sauces are offered. The owner is always extremely gracious and accommodating, but I’m very impressed with the handsome young Turkish gentleman who appears to be second in command. I’m sorry I don’t know his name, but I so appreciate his generosity in sharing with me his history and culture – including Anatolian pop music! He even wrote up a play list for me. I’m so glad they opened a sit-down restaurant in addition to the truck. I’m getting too old for stand-up meals, and if it weren’t for the restaurant I wouldn’t have been able to get to know these lovely people.

i am with you. i could have done with less information..

and sometimes too much information is the hallmark of a scam..
but other times it is the hallmark of disordered mental processing..
how do we tell? i don’t know.

I will admit that I have been scammed by people who said they were in need… i am pretty sure that more than once items from my garage (mostly freely given but not always) ended up being exchanged for goods that i would not have approved…

however. i have also watched people go from lives without hope to lives that include realistic possibilities… I have seen people literally transition from being what they considered trash to productive.

how do we know what to give and when to give it? how do we know when people will use our gifts to good ends and when they won’t? i don’t know.

but sometimes it pays off.. and when it does it can make all the difference in the world for them. that i know.

I got a new car! So I am offering my 2002 Toyota Camry LE for $3,500 OBO. (Serious inquiries only, please!)

~ It PASSED its recent emissions (2017).
~ It has NEW TIRES as of Feb 2016.
~ It has a NEW BATTERY as of Nov 2017.
~ It has NEW FRONT BRAKES as of Jan 2016.
~ I own it out right and have a CLEAN TITLE.
~ It is SMOKE FREE (owned by a non-smoker).
~ I purchased this car 2014 and have the CAR FACTS from then- This car has always been ACCIDENT FREE!

As seen in the pictures, there are some COSMETIC issues. The cosmetic flaws did not bother me enough to get them fixed. Would be a great starter car for your teenager who might add additional bumps and bruises parking around Seattle.
My Toyota has always been dependable and still has plenty of miles and life left in it. (It has 102,000 miles on it.)

In the images or the interior, you can see the mileage is just above 102k, the interior is cloth and freshly cleaned, the driver’s side mirror is cracked but functional, and the driver’s side door handle piece has broken off but is rigged with a pull-string and fully functional as well.

Pictures seen in the craigslist post here: https://seattle.craigslist.org/see/cto/d/2002-toyota-camry/6410095234.html

The bottom line is until they the politicians and transportation heads can get the lone driver out of the car and find a way to get cost under control. Get a system that runs 24/7 including holidays. Goes all over towns not just main routes. Runs from Olympia to Everett
Bremereton to Seattle east to west west to east north to south south to north. Convince taxpayers to pay for it. Traffic will always be bad and getting worse…. face it we are all at their mercy…

22blades…yes, thanks for the clarification. Regarding transportation. I no longer take Metro. They have time and time again directed me to at least 2 connections from nearby Calif and Admiral to downtown, specifically 3rd and Seneca. Then they nicely informed me to walk from there to 7th and Madison, where most of my appointemnts are. I’m 70, I walk currently with a walker. Yeah, good luck with that !. I most always take the Senior Services Hyde Shuttle to that area…It’s free, with donations if you choose. You have to plan in advance, and at times a 1 hour appt can take 5 hours because of pick up times. So, I get where you’re coming from. And it sucks. This city wants to be moving forward, a livable city for everything. I have learned that if they remain this friendly with developers (they never met one they don’t like), we will forever be in the little leagues. Will our new mayor change that? Remains to be seen. Money talks, doesn’t it?

What’s right and what you can absorb are two entirely different things, aren’t they? :(

I had the same experience with Danny Munoz. He charged me $400 up front, was completely unspecific about the scope, and did very little. When I saw how things were going, I fired him and asked for a refund for the remaining balance. He agreed but then invented a new charge for picking up bark that we hadn’t agreed to and didn’t give me my refund. In the month in which he did about one-fifth of my yard, the growth got really out of hand. In terms of his communication, when I canned him, he told me the problem was that my expectations were impossible and that no wonder I had trouble getting people to work on my yard. By contrast, the guy I hired after him did the *entire* yard, including the messy overgrowth Danny left, for $350 and did a beautiful job. Linda, who always recommends him, is his girlfriend.

Franci were you expecting an Amazon delivery, and even if so, did you go through amazon.com, or your Amazon profile to access the delivery info?

I think one of the scams I’ve been hearing about lately on the news is fake notifications of Amazon deliveries. They always urge that people double-check any links provided to make sure they read “amazon.com”, and not something like “[something].amazon.com”, or “amazon.[something].com

Oh no! The Danny Munoz I know and I know his customers has NEVER charged up front, that is completely false. The comments of dissatisfation on his work are also quite vague. Danny is the type that if you arent happy he will get the job done until you are. Communication is key here as Danny has been a lifetime West Seattle resident and has dozens and dozens of longterm happy customers, customers who communication with him about the work and have a mutual understanding of what is to be done. I am also witness to Danny being reliable. He always answers his phone and returns calls promptly. He works folks into his schedule as they come up and he always follows through. Im sorry for the unhappy service you feel you received, perhaps there was a misunderstanding. Danny always wants to make things right. It surprises me he wasnt given the opportunity to provide the top service he gives all his customers.

Is being upset about dog poop being put into one’s garbage can idiosyncratic? Perhaps it is, perhaps it isn’t. But the bottom line is some people don’t want it, for reasons you may or may not agree with. However, it is their garbage can, not yours, and they are the ones paying for the service.

Given that, as mentioned, this is not the first time this topic has come up here, I am inclined to use another word that is sometimes included in rants: entitled attitude. I think when this and previous posts inform people that this practice is not appreciated by some yet some people continue to do it then it is entitlement. You have your own garbage can at your own home, use it.

Do I know that it can be inconvenient to carry those bags of poop home? As a matter of fact I do. I have 3 dogs, two medium sized ones and one large one. And for some reason the large one nearly always poops just a block into our walk, so I have to carry that bag for the entire walk. The other two also have to go along the walk, and for some reason one of them nearly always goes twice. All this despite them having frequent access to our own fenced yard. Anyhow, as a result I have 3-4 bags of poop generated during each walk. The bags go into my pockets. It’s all part of the responsibility of urban pet ownership. You don’t have to agree with your neighbors, you might even think it is ridiculous. Doesn’t matter, it’s their garbage can, not yours, and you cannot say you are unaware of this.

I hope I am right too and that she is just making the rounds. My roommates and I once adopted a cat that had been abandoned by our neighbors. This was in college, and it took us a while to figure out that she was starving because she always hung out on the couch on our front porch even before she was abandoned. We didn’t know the neighbors had moved and left her behind. She was very old, and we gave her a good home for the last 2 years of her life. I’ll never understand how anyone could just abandon a senior cat like that.

    dcn
    Participant

I don’t know the particular cat you are talking about, but let me tell you about mine:

She loves to be outdoors, particularly in the rain. She is fascinated by water. When indoors, she is always in the tub or the sink. She loves to roll in the dirt too. I am constantly having to clean up little muddy paw prints all over my house.

If she knew that neighbors would feed her if she showed up at their door looking pathetic and meowing, then she would show up every day doing just that. She was the darling in my old apartment complex because she would make the rounds to get all the petting and food her kitty heart could desire. So many people told me they were sorry to see her go when I moved out.

She is a well-loved, well-fed kitty. I lock her in at night to give keep her safe from coyotes. I know there are coyotes roaming during the day too, and I know she could get hit by a car, but I feel my cat’s life is much richer and happier for being allowed out. I learned early on that she was not the kind of cat to take well to being kept indoors.

We accept some risk with those we love in order for them to be happy and well-adjusted. I’ve always found the “If you let your cat outdoors then you are an awful person” attitude in the blog forums to be sanctimonious. You have your opinions about what is best for your pets, and I have mine. I feel that animals are happiest when they are allowed outside.

I wonder if your neighbors are bemused at your bringing their cat to them. The cat would have come home on her own when she was ready, after she had worked over the neighborhood for free food and attention.

Erik is truly an artist, who cares about the trees, the health of the whole plant ecosystem of your property — and enhancing views in a responsible way. He started work this summer at my next-door neighbor’s, and by early this fall he had worked on 7 of us neighbors’ trees. We are all uniformly delighted with the results.

He’s a great person, with a big heart. He doesn’t always respond quickly, or adhere to a typical regular schedule. But if you work with him I know you will get wonderful results. We are really thrilled to have our views back, but also to have our trees healthy and pruned responsibly so they can live many more decades.
