WF you obviously have not been anywhere near a school in a long time. Or if you have, you aren’t paying attention. An equitable society gives more support to those who need it to get to the same place as others- in this case the goal is a quality education. There are more special needs students today because 1- research has led to a better understanding of various issues students have, so there is more diagnosing going on. 2- there are no longer viable employment options for students who don’t thrive in a school setting. Once upon a time if you couldn’t sit and focus in class you could leave school at 15 and get a job sweeping up, work your way up through the company and have a decent wage to one day raise a family. 3- BECAUSE THE *#%%** EDUCATION SYSTEM IS BROKEN. The mainstream classroom does not meet the needs of most students.

If you think this is an issue of rearranging funds, you are naive. Throwing more money at the schools would be a nice start, so at least they aren’t awful places to work or study, so we can at least bring schools into this century, so the average life of a teacher is a little more then 5 years.

And please people, if you sincerely think that people just need to save more for a rainy day, go spend some time volunteering and getting to know these people you are talking about. The cycle of poverty is much more complex. I’ve had dozens and dozens of students who made what I see as bad choices, primarily because they didn’t know there were other real, obtainable options.

If we as a country can make education an actual priority- meaning it is funded and legislated based on actual data and empirical evidence, and includes the support systems students and families need to be successful in school (counseling, job training, welfare, healthcare…), then we can start to see change. Unfortunately in my cynical moments I doubt we as a nation are competent enough to do such a thing.

FWhooper, all your link shows is a listing of number of births. The US has a much larger population than Poland, for instance, so I would expect that we would have a higher number of births.

And where does this link mention anything about a correlation between birth rates and “government support”? What do you consider this enabling support to be? You’re making a connection that is not supported by your “evidence.” TANF benefits are limited to five years total now, so what exactly are you talking about?

And lastly, how do you account for the fact that the countries with the lowest birth rates are generally those with the most generous social safety nets (most obviously the Scandanavian countries?) That flies in the face of your “conclusions.”

kgdlg so what is your solution? this is the problem the current system of giving money to young people to keep kids they have no resources to pay for and set a bad example and the cycle continues. at least adoption breaks the cycle.

i have known people that spent 10’s of thousands of $’s to adopt a child from abroad because no US born babies were available. the current system simply fosters a

look at the data, teen pregnancy in the US is so far and above any other developed country it is obvious there is a problem. and the current system of providing government support does not work. the cycle needs to be broken.

You think that’s bad, that’s nothin’. I know someone who got hit and nearly killed taking a left turn! Left turns are really really dangerous and should be banned. Driving over the speed of 20 mph is really really dangerous and should be banned. It is painfully obvious that people just don’t know how to drive and shouldn’t be allowed.

My dad is cleaning out his garage and said he still has my old bike and joked if I wanted it. It’s a 1993 Murray Trail Seeker. I got it for my 9th birthday and out grew it by age 13. I was also fairly tall until about 8th grade when I stopped growing. The bike is magenta and purple with neon yellow cable housing. I think has 18 speeds? My dad replaced the brakes so his wife’s son could ride it when he visited before they moved in together. Prior to that, the stock plastic rear brake lever when pulled all the way to the handlebar didn’t engage the rear brakes so if you slammed on both only the front engaged and would toss me off the seat. Obviously not a boys bike and hasn’t been ridden in years (step-son is now almost 6′ and in 10th grade). I have a picture I can email if you’re interested. My dad and his wife visit weekly as she’s in treatment at SCCA so he could bring it in the car next week probably. I think it’s 24″ or at least one size before adult, the next bike I got after this is still my current mountain bike. Might need new tires and some chain cleaning/lube but it would be a decent spare.

nope…not in pain…just voicing my opinion on an open forum…the right of all who post here…so sorry…I have almost decided to not come here anymore because somehow, someone has decided that they don’t like my opinion on here, and some (as in Mr. JT) have no bones about making it personal. I have been in this community for 38 years. I love this community, and the people in it….but lately, well, I’m not sure why some have decided to make negative comments about anything I post.

My comment was not meant to be unfriendly, it was meant to point out the obvious. Obviously, the OP got caught. No one’s fault but their own, in my book. If I did what they did, and got caught, well, that would be my fault, wouldn’t it? Certainly not the SPD, who are just doing their job. Yes they are allowed to go from 99 to the through lanes that are 2 lanes over – they just need to do it in a timely fashion. I don’t do a daily commute, but if I did, I would certainly know where I need to be and when.

I’m getting tired of being singled out on here, while others whine away. You make it personal, I will respond personally. I don’t think there is anything wrong with expressing an opinion, and why do you all feel that I shouldn’t, that I should just go with the flow and simply agree with you all? If I’m not honest, what does that make me? Think about it.

Pattilea, I had a kidney transplant a month ago…a new lease on life…and I’m feeling pretty good, frankly :)

In reply to: Living Wage Ordinance?

Elikapeka, the externalization of healthcare costs are the most cogent argument I have heard to date for this type of ordinance. Especially when we are talking about Walmart. I do think that the Whole Foods thing is interesting, since they said they would pay well above min wage and offer healthcare too. That seems more of a union vs non union issue.

How does the ACA play into this though? If someone on min wage can now buy a policy and get a federal credit to cover the whole thing does it dilute the living wage argument?

Obviously in Seattle you need way more than minimum wage just to afford rent in this town so there are a lot of factors an metrics to consider. Still curious…

I am not sure I can align myself with either the Department of Neighborhoods (DON) or with the petitioners, so I dug up some additional documents. Here are links to DON publications: an overview of the plot-sizing changes, an FAQ about the plot-size changes, a 2012 P-Patch Fact Sheet:

    evolvingsweetie.typepad.com/files/plot-sizing-guildeline-5-6-13a.pdf

    evolvingsweetie.typepad.com/files/plot-sizing-guideline-faq-1.pdf

    http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/ppatch/documents/FactSheetnewcombinedversion2012.pdf

I don’t find Ms. Butow’s analogies particularly apt here, not that it matters. I tend to see this as one of those situations where there may be relatively few viable options to address a genuine issue (long waiting times for plots), and none of the options are ideal. But maybe there are options I haven’t heard about.

Personally, I was relieved when the DON decided not to impose term-limits on gardeners. It is disappointing, though, that there seems to be reluctance to enforce rules that would ensure that gardens that aren’t being maintained turn over to new families more quickly. Designating more vacant land for p-patches sounds so sensible and obvious, but the process is not merely lengthy, it requires that residents in an area actively join together and do the work to make it happen — everything from finding vacant land and determining if it is suitable, to building up a financial and volunteer base to design and build the p-patch. (See this page on starting a new p-patch: http://www.seattle.gov/neighborhoods/ppatch/start.htm.) The DON will supply coaching and staff support, but this is not a program where the City just razes a plot for the locals to garden. If the people in the local area don’t make it happen, it doesn’t happen.

I readily admit that I don’t know all the issues involved here. While I appreciate that many of the larger p-patch plots are assigned to immigrants and refugees so that they can, as one of our former presidents would say, “put food on their families,” that is not the only function of the p-patch program. At the same time, at the end of 2012, over 1150 people were waiting for space in just 50 p-patches.

The petition, as I read it, has one core demand, which is to halt the downsizing process. What I would really be interested to know is whether the proponents of the petition have alternative proposals to allow more families to participate in p-patch gardening?

brew, don’t even begin to think you are immune from Jiggers wrath.

WSB was more than patient with him over the years when other posters were put off or downright offended by something he said, or even by his name, which one poster a few years back complained was racist. WSB came to his defense.

Many of us considered him to be a friend on some level, and some have done a great deal to help him out.

I began to consider him a friend beginning last year after meeting him in person—visiting him in the hospital. I felt I could relate to him, with us both having chronic health issues, and having been homeless.

Nothing is ever good enough for him, and if he feels the tiniest bit slighted by anyone, even if they have been a great help to him, he turns on them.

Hell, he’s turned on people, including myself, for no seemingly obvious reason, other than maybe something we challenged him on.

    Topic: hit dog

hi yesterday i saw a dog be hit, looked like a min pin. Black and brown around 1030-11am in front of West Seattle Nursery on california. Dog darted so fast, I only saw dog flip and take off…since such a small dog very worried in shock but hurt badly. I saw the person turn around and go down road (obviously looking for it) i went back myself several hours later, hopeful to see it. I am a huge animal advocate and been crying and sick to my stomach about this poor dog. If anyone knows anything about status of it that would be great. I hope it is ok. Thank you, taking a shot in dark.

Ok, well I came home from work a little early today and went over there and looked around again but this time the apartment parking lot was not full so I was able to see back into some spots that I could not see yesterday. And the cats are definitely hanging out back there and I could even see some empty cat food tins that someone (I assume the old guy) stuck back in there.

I know you said the old guy does not give them canned food but I have seen him leaving canned food sometimes with the dry food (yesterday when I cleaned up the mess he left behind it looked like there had been canned food). Though I think often he only leaves dry food. Also the amount of food he leaves seems to vary quite a bit. I’m wondering if there is a pattern to it like at the beginning of the month he leaves more and canned food and then toward the end of the month less and only dry food. This might correspond to how much money he has.

I also talked to a guy who lives in one of the apartment buildings, he is frequently back there by the garages working on cars and stuff. He said that yes he sees a few cats around and he is aware of the old guy sometimes leaving cat food. But it was pretty obvious the guy did not really want to talk to me about it. I think I might have made him uncomfortable. So I did not get as far as asking him if he would be willing to watch traps back in that apartments courtyard parking area.

After looking into the situation it does seem like a combination of factors are really making it difficult. Not that I’m giving up though.

YOU used the word selfish first. That indicates that you assume those in single occupant vehicles are driving solo for selfish reasons. I pointed out that there are exceptions, and that you have no possible way of knowing what people’s plans are on a given day, nor what their reasons for not carpooling are. For all you know, every solo driver you see on the road carpools once or twice a week. But instead of saying something like “Wouldn’t it be nice if just 25% more people would carpool?” You said “Why be selfish?” You ascribed malicious intent just because the rest of the world isn’t acting the way you want it to right this minute. I brought up my SUV in response to people in this thread griping about urban dwellers with SUVs. Without knowing the circumstances of why someone drives the vehicle they do, the poster assumed that such drivers are sad, pointless, and unable to drive competently. And my comment about driving past those in need was facetious, and to my mind was obviously so. It was meant to be a warning in the sense that if people feel unappreciated when they do help, they may be less likely to help someone else–e.g. if I’m going to be called sad, selfish, or any other derogatory term for being alone in my SUV, why should I bother returning kindness for your nastiness? Well, the answer is I shouldn’t, although I will, because unlike the OPs characterizations, I am not a selfish person, and I’m happy to help my fellow humans when in need.

Also, as WSB pointed out, if you truly were motivated by a desire to relieve traffic and save the planet, you would have adopted a more conciliatory tone, and actually posted ideas to help–instead, you came into this thread on attack, with no empathy for anyone else, and I’m pretty sure at this point that you did so deliberately–I think you wanted to start a fight. Well, you got one, and now that it appears the bulk of the posters are not in agreement with you, you’re trotting out that very tired word, “haters,” which makes you sound like a 13-year-old on facebook, and resorting to nasty language about people who disagree with you.

As a rule, I don’t feed trolls, so I won’t be reading any more of this thread. Respond to me or don’t, I don’t care. I’ve got your measure now, and your opinion is completely meaningless.

Well I walked down this alley this evening and sure enough I saw a pizza box with some cat food on it and a big raccoon eating away. I also saw one of the cats that I suspect is being described as a kitten.

To me it looked full grown in size but not a big cat (that is a picture that I took of it and uploaded as my avatar). I would guess it was at least six months old or so but I don’t know much about cats. Solid black looked sort of skinny but I think most young cats are skinny so it did not look obviously malnourished or mangy or anything. If I had not been looking for feral cats I probably would have assumed it was someones pet.

I made a google map with with all the details related to cats that I have observed in this alley and sent an invite to FCAT to look at and add to the map. I will be happy to send an invite to anyone else who want to give me their email address. My thinking is if we can share information about where we’ve seen the cats and when the old guy comes around and feeds them etc. then maybe this information can help.

I live on Fauntleroy (2 blocks from ferry dock) where obviously there is no parking. We purchase parking passes to be able to accommodate our vehicles and today we are not able to park on own cars on the side street. There are 4 2Go cars taking up our spaces. While I can appreciate the benefits this program offers – it ticks me off that I can’t even park in my own neighborhood.

    #793700

Why doesn’t gregsalmon volunteer to watch the traps? I’m not trying to call anyone out but just watching these threads it seems like an obvious question. From what I can infer he lives quite near to the situation and is concerned enough to make several post about it. I would think if there are lots of feral cats around at least some of them would find their way to his yard assuming there was some tuna or other bait that they could smell. Or maybe the traps could be set at the apartment complex that you mention and he could watch them by walking over there. I personally know nothing about trapping cats so maybe an explanation of what it entails would be helpful. What are the responsibilities of the person watching the traps? If you catch a feral cat is it going to start making noise and wake up the neighborhood?

I am a member of Union 21, but I do agree, this survey is badly written and leading.

This is not a way to get your point across or win fans. Although I think WF would be an amazing way to revitalize parts of Delridge, making a case needs to be better than this. I hope that this development does not end up where it is proposed to be, not only because of obvious reasons…. ie…. Small businesses suffering, but mainly because as a resident, the proposed development would completely bottle neck and congest that part of Fauntleroy, that section of road cannot logically support that type of traffic. 400 homes, with 400 give or take vehicles?

We have been a small town in a city for years and I get we are going through growing pains, I just wish there was more logic than greed. If you have a product that people want, they will seek you out. You don’t need to be an eyesore.

    Who is behind the website?

That is a horrible survey, poorly worded with leading questions. Obviously there is already an agenda the way the questions are worded.

Maybe they’ve never heard of Survey Monkey and how to write objective survey questions in order to get valid results?

Except for Zimmerman’s own story, I don’t think it was proven by evidence at trial that Trayvon “came back” and confronted him. What specifically would that mean, anyway? It could mean merely that Trayvon turned around (as the phone conversation would seem to indicate) to ask Z why he was following him. Apparently Zimmerman was the only one in the equation allowed to either confront or question. For obvious reasons, Trayvon’s story will never be told.

The other thing that’s bugging me a bit is that nothing seems to have been made of the fact that Trayvon was a minor. Even if he was 6’2″, it’s unreasonable to expect the same level of composure and judgement as one would from an adult. The very worst that Trayvon could be accused of would be assault, as a juvenile. The fact remains that not a single action of Martin’s was a crime warranting a death sentence.

I don’t know if anyone has heard or read the post-trial comments by Zimmerman’s brother, but they are bizarre – and despicable.

WF I commend you for gathering the actual data. I have been meaning to make this request, just have not had time to. As I also suspected, of course these cameras are not tied to real accident data or potential risk area. Everyone knows, for example, that no kids actually get dropped off on 35th at OLG. Or on Roxbury at Roxhill. These are just excuses to place cameras in school zones to make money. I have posted here too many times to count about this issue and the general consensus is that people would rather wave their finger and say “shame on you, just don’t speed” than think critically about the rapid proliferation of these money-making cameras all over the City. When they end up on every other corner and in front of every school (not obviously a school entrance or drop off area), we will see how many people feel like they are still ok.

I, too, think we should all drive the speed limit, but if you are not concerned about abdicating your right to actually be witnessed by an actual person while committing an infraction, well, shame on YOU, in my opinion.

Jack Block Park may not be exactly what you’re looking for, but it has a small, sandy-ish beach. It’s an interesting combination of coastline and industry as well as being a quiet alternative to the obvious Alki. Also, a great view of the city from the pier and crane. Bonus, plenty of parking and the big, metal buoy collection.

I completely sympathize. My previous apartment had really drafty windows and for a while my downstairs neighbors were chefs and came home and made dinner after they got home from dinner shift at about 11pm. So as soon as I was turning in for bed my bedroom reeked of sauteed garlic. They finally moved out and a new tenant moved in the basement that stewed seriously pungent smelling ethnic foods all weekend long that wafted up the drains, elevator shaft, hallways, stairs, out the windows and up into the others, you name it if there was a draft it smelled like that food. They even propped open all the outside doors to the building (unsafe!) and opened their apartment door to the hallway obviously knowing full well it stank but the landlord never did anything even when I mentioned I was worried they were pouring leftovers down the toilet since my bathroom 2 floors up smelled like their food.

Unfortunately you’re probably not in a rental situation. Maybe look into sealing off your windows a little more on that side of the house? Or upgrading if it’s an option? Irritating that in order to avoid the neighbors smells, you have to shell out the cash.
