Congratulations to Seattle Lutheran High School soccer stars who have just won big honors. At right, Ashley Shaw has been chosen Washington State B Soccer Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. She is also the Saints’ all-time soccer-scoring leader, with 94 goals and 37 assists, and led them to the state tournament every year she’s been there, including the state championship last year. At left, Emily Winter, also a key player these past four years, was elected to the All-State second team. Both girls are seniors and have made their college choices – Ashley (who says she’s been playing since she was a preschooler!) is going to Seattle Pacific University on a soccer scholarship – expecting to sign on Letter of Intent Day next Wednesday – and Emily is going to Washington State.

We’ve been working to update the WSB West Seattle Events calendar, to catch up with changes and postponements that happened during Winterstormapalooza 2012. (Substitute your favorite storm name; we’re trying to think of a hybrid that covers both the snow and ice.) And we’re getting a few notes about events that ARE definitely still on for TOMORROW. Here are three, for starters:

Come celebrate the arts during a live-music art show opening Saturday, Jan. 21 at Skylark Cafe & Club in West Seattle. The party begins at 7 p.m., music at 9 p.m. with special guests The Fuzz, The Navins and If Bears Were Bees. The art show, which features photographs documenting the Seattle music scene, runs through Feb. 27.

Troy Lingle’s 21 points were enough to make him the high scorer for the West Seattle High School boys basketball team Friday night, but even with 15 of those points coming in the second half, the effort was not enough to avoid a third-straight loss for the Wildcats, who fell at home to the Nathan Hale HS Raiders.
Hale also won the girls’ varsity match preceding the boys’ varsity game.

More sports notes from the first weekend of the new year: First, congratulations to West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth High School swimmers for their achievements in the Friday meet with O’Dea and Holy Names Academy. Thanks to Katy for sending the list of results (see it here); for West Seattle HS, Luke Asatiani won the boys’ 200-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke; for Chief Sealth, Kelsey Hastings led the girls’ 50-yard free and 100-yard fly, Morgan Montemayor took the boys’ 100-yard fly and 100-yard backstroke, the 500-yard free swims were won by Jennifer Faulkner and Michael Stewart, Brianna Phillips won the girls’ 100-yard backstroke, and Nicole Moro was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Saturday, meantime, was a busy day on the basketball courts. And even a soccer sighting – as Chief Sealth’s team held a bake-sale fundraiser during the school’s basketball games:

An early sign of spring! One week from tonight, it’s the first in-person registration session of the year for West Seattle Little League. 6-8:30 pm Thursday, January 12, at the West Seattle High School library. That’s also where you’ll find the second session, 6-8:30 pm Tuesday, January 24th. You’re asked to fill out the registration form ahead of time and bring it along; WSLL says you’ll find it online, here. What else to bring: A copy of the prospective player’s birth certificate; 3 proof-of-residence items (that same weblink will show you what qualifies); and registration-fee payment. This year’s fees are the same as last year, says WSLL, whose website has more on that and other info for families.

Though the weather outside was frightful, the basketball inside was so delightful.
The fans who braved the cold, wind, and rain to take in the first West Seattle High School girls basketball game of the new year were treated to a dominant performance by the Wildcats, who easily handled the visiting Rainier Beach Vikings, winning 48-13.
Although ten different Wildcats scored in the game, defense was the key to victory. West Seattle blanked their guests in the first quarter, resulting in a 14-0 margin and all the points needed to win the game. After yielding 11 points in the second quarter, the West Seattle defense would pitch another shutout in the third quarter, while not allowing another field goal the rest of the night, leaving Rainier Beach to score only two more points after halftime, both on free throws in the fourth.
The victory was West Seattle’s first in Metro Conference play, moving them into third in the Sound Division at 1-3 in conference play and improves their overall record to 3-6. The loss dropped the Vikings to 0-9 on the year.

If “beat the No. 1 team in the state” was a New Year’s resolution for the West Seattle High School boys’ basketball team, they were’t quite able to keep it on Tuesday night, losing 76-53 to visiting Rainier Beach HS.
RBHS brought with them their No. 1 ranking in Washington’s 3A classification, a spotless 8-0 record, and the state’s highest-rated player in Anrio Adams, who is signed to play basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks next season. As if that weren’t enough, ESPN also has the Vikings listed as the 26th-best team in the nation.
Those credentials were on display early and often, as the visitors scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed, saddling the home Wildcats with their first loss of 2012.
School may be out but holiday basketball tournaments continue. Tonight Seattle Lutheran High School‘s teams are both playing in the finals of a tournament in the Skagit County town of Mount Vernon – and the Saints have already taken the girls’ title, beating Mount Vernon Christian 40-37. She’s one of the fastest women in the state – and she’s still in high school. West Seattle resident Maddie Meyers is one of five nominees for “Female Sports Star of the Year” when the Seattle Sports Commission announces its annual awards next month. She runs for The Northwest School and is a national recordholder as well as winning four consecutive state titles in cross-country. But in addition to rooting for Maddie, you can also vote for her – the SSC is asking for public votes online. Maddie’s mom Kathy Meyers says, “There have been few high schoolers nominated for this award, and Maddie is really honored by this.” You can vote for her by going here (note, they ask for an e-mail address up front, but right over the final “cast vote” button, you can click to uncheck the box that would put you on a newsletter list). There are three other voting categories – Male and Professional Sports Stars of the Year and Sports Story of the Year. The winners will be announced at Benaroya Hall downtown on January 25th.

Deck the halls with Columbia blue and red!
Bolstered by a 12-point fourth quarter by senior guard Charlie Smith, the Chief Sealth International High School boys-varsity basketball team upset the seventh-ranked Garfield High School Bulldogs, 71-67, sending the Seahawks into the school’s winter break with a three-game winning streak and looking forward to a trip to San Diego to participate in a tournament in sunnier climes.
Smith, who had 22 total points on the night, seemed to kick-start a critical stretch of the game when he recovered his own miss, by ripping the ball from Bulldog Tucker Haymond’s hands and making a quick pass to Pepe Hernandez, who scored the easiest of his 14 points.
Smith then connected on three-point shots in consecutive possessions, helping Sealth grow a 3-point lead to a more-comfortable 63-52 spread with 2:20 remaining in the game.

For the second consecutive night, high-school basketball teams from West Seattle had a cross-neighborhood faceoff last night. West Seattle High School faced Seattle Lutheran High School, one night after its teams played Chief Sealth International High School.

Sports notes to share this morning from the weekend: First, congratulations to the two West Seattle Soccer Club‘s teams that the club says won statewide championships over the weekend, the BU-11 (boys) and GU-15 (girls) teams both named the Crush.
Second, in high-school basketball: Friday night, West Seattle High School‘s boys-varsity team beat Bainbridge 68-53 on the road, while the varsity girls lost 69-24. Chief Sealth International High School‘s girls-varsity team beat Rainier Beach at home, 54-12, while the varsity boys lost 83-52. And on Saturday, Seattle Lutheran High School‘s boys won at Shoreline Christian 58-46, while the girls lost 46-44. Congratulations to the girls’ GU-15 West Seattle Crush and boys’ BU-11 West Seattle Crush soccer teams from the West Seattle Soccer Club – they’re both in the state semifinals, the Washington Youth Soccer Recreational Cup, this weekend. The boys play the South Whidbey Islanders at 9 am Saturday on Starfire Sports Complex field #9 in Tukwila, and go to the finals at 2 pm if they win; the girls play the Sun Devils at 10;30 am Sunday on Valley Ridge Field #2 in Seatac, with the finals at 3:30 pm at Starfire field #4 if they win. Chief Sealth junior point guard Bronte Corbray scored 21 points in his team’s 71-69 overtime victory over Nathan Hale, including two from a pull-up jumper with 7 seconds remaining in regulation to pull the Seahawks even with the visiting Raiders:
In overtime, it was senior Pepe Hernandez doing the honors with consecutive field goals in less than a minute late in the overtime to take his team from down 62-60 to a 64-62 lead.
One of those days where, as the old saying goes, it’s raining cats and Dawgs. Yes, Dawgs, as in the Apple Cup-victorious University of Washington Huskies … and that win meant Washington State University Cougars fan Conor lost his bet. We found him in Morgan Junction, in the wind and the rain, wasting no time making good on it.

Roxhill Park‘s future “skatespot” is going into the final design phase before construction next year, now that the project team has presented the newest round of design concepts. In case you wanted to be there but couldn’t go, we have the full hour on video in our clip above (if you just want a quick look/listen at the concepts, fast-forward to about 12 minutes in).
More than 20 people attended the meeting at Southwest Library. As with the 2nd meeting last month (WSB coverage here), design firm California Skateparks was represented by its lead designer Colby Carter, who brought two concepts, each with two variations. Votes were requested; “Plan A” was the favorite by far …
… with “Plan B” a fairly strong second, while the other two got a combined total of one vote. One key feature requested: Something unique that can’t be found at any other skatepark in Seattle.
We’ve requested electronic versions of what was shown last night; in the meantime, keep an eye on the official project website for updates. This is to be built at the same time as the Roxhill Park Playground renovations, which get their own final design meeting on November 30th (6 pm, also at SW Library), with completion projected for next fall.

Winter-sports season is about to begin at many high schools, including West Seattle’s Chief Sealth International HS, which announced some big news this past week: After five years, Sealth football coach Asosa Sailiai is out, according to an announcement by athletic director Sam Reed, who says that while he is looking for a new coach who can “take that next step toward competitive success,” he thanks Sailiai for “leaving a much stronger program than the one he inherited,” having been able to, with his staff, “more than triple participation numbers, eliminate significant academic achievement issues within the program and build a junior varsity team that had been absent for some time.” Also this week, Reed congratulated his school’s fall-sports athletes for their achievements – read on for the official recap he shared with the CSIHS community:Read More
