More sports notes from the first weekend of the new year: First, congratulations to West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth High School swimmers for their achievements in the Friday meet with O’Dea and Holy Names Academy. Thanks to Katy for sending the list of results (see it here); for West Seattle HS, Luke Asatiani won the boys’ 200-yard IM and 100-yard breaststroke; for Chief Sealth, Kelsey Hastings led the girls’ 50-yard free and 100-yard fly, Morgan Montemayor took the boys’ 100-yard fly and 100-yard backstroke, the 500-yard free swims were won by Jennifer Faulkner and Michael Stewart, Brianna Phillips won the girls’ 100-yard backstroke, and Nicole Moro was victorious in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Saturday, meantime, was a busy day on the basketball courts. And even a soccer sighting – as Chief Sealth’s team held a bake-sale fundraiser during the school’s basketball games:
That’s Xahil and Dillon. (Thanks to the @SealthAthletics Twitter feed for the bake-sale tip!) Sealth and Seattle Lutheran both played basketball at home, so WSB was there, and summaries are ahead:
From WSB co-publisher Patrick Sand:
At Seattle Lutheran High School, the Saints boys started the afternoon tied with visiting Chief Leschi for second place in SeaTac 2B play, but their cold start, combined with some foul trouble, led to a 48-40 Leschi win. The loss moves the Saints to third place, despite a fourth-quarter run that brought them within three points of the lead with only a little over two minutes to go. In the second half of the game, Lutheran amassed 12 fouls, which Chief Leschi capitalized on very effectively. The Saints’ top scorers were senior guard Jordan Webb with 14 points and junior guard Bryce Morgan with 11.
A bit later in the afternoon, over at Chief Sealth International High School, the Hawks played for the second consecutive day/night, with Bishop Blanchet visiting. First up, the girls, whose final score vs. Blanchet didn’t really reflect the pace of most of the game – though Sealth lost 54-33, the visitors didn’t really break away into continued double-digit dominance till the fourth quarter. Here’s a third-quarter drive ending with junior Mariah Rubio-Reboca converting a rebound:
Sealth outfouled Blanchet, giving their opponents extra scoring opportunities.
In the second game, the Sealth boys saw a more distributed pattern of scoring than their Friday-night win over Cleveland, defeating Bishop Blanchet 55-39.
Friday night’s leader Charlie Smith wound up with 13 points, but he was bested by teammates Bronte Corbray with 15 and Aaron Knox, who put up 16. Nine of Knox’s points came on three-pointers. Blanchet had problems moving the ball upcourt and rebounding. Most of that was caused by Sealth senior Pepe Hernandez, who had the foul trouble to show for it. He sat down early in the first half, but returned in the second and finished the night with a slam in the last couple of minutes.
The Sealth boys remain in second place behind Rainier Beach in the Metro League Sound Division. The Seahawks now go to Franklin on Tuesday. Franklin is in first place in the Metro Valley Division.
