West Seattle, Washington
13 Monday
6:02 PM: SFD was sending a ‘rescue extrication’ response to a reported car-on-side crash near Louisa Boren STEM K-8 at Delridge/Juneau, called in by an SFD engine – but the engine crew asked that it be downsized because the driver is out of the vehicle. They’re asking police to investigate whether it was a hit-run because they can’t find the reported second vehicle possibly involved.
6:09 PM: Added screenshot of crash-scene vicinity from nearest SDOT traffic cam, but the crashed vehicle itself appears to be out of view. No description of that possible second vehicle. (Update: Police have described the on-side vehicle as a pickup truck.)
6:20 PM: The live traffic camera does show that Delridge is currently blocked both ways at the scene.
6:28 PM: Police are reopening the southbound side of Delridge.
7:03 PM: They just reopened the northbound side too.
9:36 PM: We asked SFD about injuries. Spokesperson Kaila Lafferty tells us, “Crews were dispatched to the 5900 block of Delridge Way SW for a report of vehicle collision with one vehicle on its side. The response was quickly downgraded because the patient was able to exit the vehicle with assistance from bystanders before our crews arrived. The patient was an approximately 53-year-old male in stable condition. The patient was transported to the hospital by AMR.”
1:21 AM: The location given for this isn’t entirely clear yet but a car has flipped after going off the embankment at or near the Highway 509 exit to South Cloverdale. The driver is reported to be “outside the vehicle” but seriously injured.
1:32 AM: The SFD log has clarified the location to that exit, and police are closing at least one section of the ramp. The driver is being taken to the hospital.
2 AM: No further updates aside from SDOT arriving to help with scene cleanup. We’ll follow up with SPD and SFD.
10:48 AM: Here’s what SFD spokesperson Kaila Lafferty tells us: “The incident was briefly upgraded to a rope rescue response because the vehicle went down an embankment. Bystanders pulled the patient from the vehicle before our crew arrived, so no rescue was needed. Crews treated an approximately 27-year-old male in serious condition. The patient was transported to the hospital by medics.”
12:52 PM: Thanks for the tips about a big police response in Arbor Heights. They’ve converged on a home in the 10400 block of California SW. SFD has a “scenes of violence” response there. Updates to come.
12:56 PM: This was originally reported as a shooting but now confirmed that no one was shot. A person who was in possession of a gun, reported as “walking away,” is being questioned. SFD has been canceled.
MONDAY AFTERNOON: Here’s the SPD summary of what police believe happened:
At 1239 hours, a caller reported he had located an unknown man in his house and had just shot him. Officers responded and located the caller outside with a revolver in his hand. Officers gave him commands to put the gun down and the caller followed the orders. The caller was placed into custody without incident. A search of the residence was conducted and did not locate anyone else inside. One shot had been fired (.22 cal.) inside the residence. The caller was sent to HMC [Harborview Medical Center] for an ITA [evaluation for involuntary treatment], the firearm was collected and placed into evidence.
11:55 PM: Police and fire are at the scene of what’s reported as a flipped-car crash at California/Harbor. The initial SFD dispatch was large but quickly downsized. Harbor is blocked in the area.
12:10 AM: The downsizing was because the driver “self-extricated.” They’re being investigated for DUI.
12:23 AM: Rescuers are headed by land and sea to respond to a report of a “young female” in the water south of the bridge. This came shortly after a report of a girl or woman on a bridge offramp, looking over the edge; police had been dispatched to look for her. Even before rescuers arrive, someone in a boat is reported to be trying to help her out of the water.
12:26 AM: An SFD boat has made contact with her, according to what dispatch just told officers.
12:31 AM: She’s now aboard a fireboat. Where exactly she was pulled out of the water isn’t clear; right now radar shows the fireboats grouped near Terminal 5. They’ve decided to transport her to Fire Station 5 on the downtown waterfront to transfer her to a medic unit, so the land response that’s gathered at T-5 is being dismissed.
12:37 AM: The firefighters with the rescued girl just said over the radio that she is 11 years old.
If you or someone you know is thinking about self-harm, the 988 hotline has help 24 hours a day.
3:36 PM: Seattle Fire has just upgraded a response at 42nd and 109th [map] to a “rope rescue.” The situation is described as “two large dogs down an embankment.” It’s apparently a 30-foot embankment. More info to come.
3:39 PM: After checking a map we’ve changed this to The Arroyos.
3:44 PM: At least one dog is reported secured in a harness.
3:55 PM: That dog’s been brought all the way up the slope to safety, firefighters just told dispatch.
4:02 PM: And they’ve just declared the second dog successfully rescued. … And “all rescuers on flat land” too.
4:09 PM: The responders are starting to leave.
6:27 PM: Thanks for the tip and photo! Police are looking for the driver of that pickup truck after he hit at least one parked car on Beach Drive and ditched the truck near Shore Place [map]. He was described over police radio as Hispanic, 30, 5’8″, wearing a “multicolored” sweatshirt. He may have headed into the Me-Kwa-Mooks greenbelt. No injuries reported. If you have any information, call 911.
6:57 PM: No report so far of the driver being found, but officers told dispatch the crash scene is now open again to traffic.
5:56 PM: A two-car crash west of 15th/Roxbury is reported to be blocking the westbound lanes of Roxbury. Avoid the area for a while.
7:19 PM: Now SPD is responding to a collision at California/Raymond, blocking southbound, reported to involve two cars plus a parked car.
3:52 PM: Thanks for the tip about a two-car crash with one on its side at 38th/Oregon. SFD is now sending a “rescue extrication” response, indicating someone may be trapped.
3:56 PM: Reader photo added. The car “on two wheels” (as a firefighter described it) is a Volvo SUV, the other car a Honda Civic. The trapped person is reported to be in the Volvo and just “unable to get out.”
4:04 PM: The person has been safely extricated, firefighters just told dispatch.
5:32 PM: We followed up with SFD to ask about injuries. Spokesperson David Cuerpo said the 42-year-old woman who was rescued said she wasn’t hurt; a 25-year-old woman was taken to a hospital via AMR ambulance and was assessed as being in stable condition when transported.
12:38 AM: Police are in the 9200 block of 16th SW [vicinity map] investigating what’s reported to have been a hit-run crash that left a motorcyclist seriously injured. They’re looking for what they say witnesses described as a brown, older Ford F-150, likely to be damaged and leaking fluid. (Added: Officers tell dispatch witnesses say it was last seen heading eastbound on either Barton or Henderson.) If you have any information, the case # to refer to is 26-032194.
9:17 AM: SFD tells us the motorcyclist is a 51-year-old man who was in stable condition when taken to a hospital. We’re checking on whether police found the suspected hit-run vehicle/driver.
9:13 AM: Seattle Fire has sent a “rope rescue” response to the 3200 block of SW Spokane [map], upslope from the west side of the Admiral Way hill. According to radio exchanges, they need to lift an injured person off a roof.
9:16 AM: SFD says this is happening at a construction site. Crews are planning to rescue the person via a ladder instead of lifting them out in a basket.
9:32 AM: Firefighters just told dispatch that “the patient is off the roof.” … Reader photo added above, sent by SeanO. The rescued person’s injuries are not described as life-threatening.
No camera in the area so we don’t have a visual, but a driver is reported to have gone off the road toward the southwest end of the West Seattle Bridge a short time ago and hit the “Welcome to West Seattle” sign. We’re mostly just noting this one for the record, as SFD upon arrival noted that no one was hurt and the crashed vehicle – reported to be a pickup truck – was out of the flow of traffic.
12:46 PM: SPD and SFD are responding to a reported two-car crash, with one “flipped,” in the 4700 block of 38th SW [vicinity map]. No serious injuries reported so far.
12:49 PM: The flipped car’s driver is reported to have run from the scene. Description from police radio: Black male teen, long curly hair, black hoodie and black pants.
1 PM: Added photo (thanks to Sharonn). Police are checking out damage to parked cars the driver may have hit.
11:50 AM: Thanks for the photos and tips. Two Seattle Fire crews are at the Ross store in Westwood Village.
According to the dispatch, staff and customers evacuated the store because of a “natural gas odor.”
11:56 AM: Firefighters have just told dispatch “this appears to be an HVAC issue, no smoke or fire” so they’ll be leaving,
11:11 AM: Seattle Fire boats are arriving off Duwamish Head, to check out a ~30-foot sailboat reported to be adrift, with someone aboard.
11:16 AM: Meantime, SPD just reported to dispatch, “The Coast Guard has made contact with our boater in distress and is assisting them.”
11:07 PM: Police are at the 41st/Admiral gas station/minimart with a driver who is reported to have crashed her car into it. No, not a crash-grab; they’re investigating the possibility of impairment. No injuries reported. All we have so far is the screengrab above from the 41st/Admiral traffic cam, which has long been in black and white, but we’re on our way for a closer look.
11:27 PM: The car, described over police radio as a red Honda, is not in view, nor is the driver, nor are police, who are in their patrol cars. But our photo above is what the damage looks like, with a water machine knocked over into the east end of the mini-mart storefront.
TUESDAY UPDATE: Police tell us the 31-year-old woman who was driving was arrested on suspicion of DUI.
3:28 PM: A few people have asked about the sizable police/fire response at Delridge/Andover. Radio communication indicated police were dealing with a combative person in crisis, and they called for SFD help so he could be taken to Harborview Medical Center for emergency behavioral-health care.
4:27 PM: We went back to re-listen to incident audio, and what happened, according to police and dispatch, is that an officer who was transporting someone in custody wound up in contact with the person in crisis, who was trying to get into his patrol car, so first the officer called for SPD backup, and then medical help.
9:18 AM: Thanks for the tip. Just after a reader called to tell us about this, after passing the scene while going the other way, SFD is just arriving at what they describe as a “rolled-over box truck” on the westbound West Seattle Bridge. One person is reported trapped, another got out. Updates to come.
9:22 AM: The person is reported to be safely out. SFD is dismissing most of its responders. We haven’t seen a photo, and there’s still no working traffic camera in the area, but from what the reader told us, sounds like this is at or near the curve.
11:59 AM: Thanks to Mike for sending a photo:
10:18 PM: Police and fire are arriving at the scene of what’s reported to be a car that went off the West Seattle Bridge down to East Marginal Way. Four people are reported hurt, three seriously. Updates to come.
10:25 PM: They’ve gotten everyone out of the crashed car, which is reported to be a Chevy Cruze that landed upside down. They haven’t said where they believe the car went off the bridge, but this is the address given to the response.
10:30 PM: So far they’re investigating the theory that the car went off the bridge on the offramp to 99. (Of note for those who don’t read this in real time, it’s raining fairly heavily right now.)
10:41 PM: Medics told dispatch all four patients are on the way to Harborview. Two of the four have been described as possibly 17 and 20 years old; the driver has been described as female.
10:50 PM: Added a photo. The ramp to 99 will be closed for the investigation, police just told dispatch.
10:57 PM: Now they’re saying via radio that this is actually the Harbor Island offramp from 99.
5:20 AM: SPD says one crash victim, a teenage boy who was ejected, has died, and the other three, including the 16-year-old girl who was driving, are in the hospital with “serious or critical injuries.”
ADDED MONDAY: The King County Medical Examiner’s Office identifies the crash victim who died as 18-year-old Jayden T. Campbell.
ADDED TUESDAY: He and at least some of the victims were from the Olympic Peninsula, according to this Peninsula Daily News report (thanks to Barbara for sending the link).
11:50 PM: SFD and SPD are headed to Beach Drive SW and SW Canada [map] after a report of a crash involving a car that’s reportedly on its side after its driver hit a house and parked vehicles. Updates to come.
11:57 PM: Officers just told dispatch they’re going to have Beach Drive closed both ways “for quite a while.” Meantime, SFD reports one person is trapped inside the vehicle that’s on its side, a “small SUV.”
12:14 AM: Added a photo just received via text. Also, SFD told dispatch they’re taking the driver to the hospital.
12:24 AM: Police just told dispatch they’ve reopened southbound Beach Drive.
1:25 AM: Another texter reports the vehicles are being towed and scene is being cleaned up, sending these photos:
9:39 AM: Seattle Fire medics are responding to Seacrest right now after a report of a diver who had been unconscious in the water. Via emergency radio, he is described as a man in his early 20s, brought to shore aboard a Water Taxi, and several SFD units have responded to treat him.
9:53 AM: No further radio updates so far. We’ll be following up with SFD.
1:55 PM: We just heard back from SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo, who says the diver is a 57-year-old woman and that she was in stable condition when transported to Virgina Mason.
9:04 PM: Police are on their way to what’s reported as a flipped-car crash in the 2100 block of 46th SW. The vehicle is described as a Toyota RAV-4 and dispatchers say callers reported the driver got out safely and does not want medical attention, so SFD is not going. The driver may have hit parked cars. We’re en route to look.
9:13 PM: SPD has called for SFD, saying the crashed vehicle “is a hybrid and it’s still running.”
9:28 PM: Added our crew’s photo atop the story. They report a tow truck arriving. … And below, a texted photo (thanks!):
9:35 PM: Police tell our crew the driver was arrested. He’s under investigation for possible DUI.
9:54 PM: Here’s reader video of the flipped car being righted by a tow crew:
5:01 PM: If you’re seeing emergency responders heading toward Don Armeni Boat Ramp – it’s another “boat sinking” call and SFD/SPD are trying to determine if it’s the same boat that’s drawn responses the past two days, and was supposed to be getting attention from the US Coast Guard and Department of Ecology too.
5:04 PM: They’ve verified it’s the same boat, which would make this the fourth response in three days for it. But one radio exchange suggested someone at the USCG told SFD the boat had been removed, so they’re trying to get that all straightened out.
6 PM: Postscript – the USCG was definitely there with the boat earlier this afternoon, reports Stewart L., who sent these photos:
We’ll check on its status before dark.
9:22 PM: It was dark by the time we got there, but an effort appeared to be under way to get the boat onto a trailer. Here’s what we saw a little over an hour ago:
ADDED 10:57 AM SATURDAY: Police have now been dispatched to Don Armeni for something related to this boat and report to dispatch that it’s still there, still on a trailer with a pickup hitched to it.
