West Seattle Crime Watch: Car prowls; vandalism; abandoned bicycles

Four notes in West Seattle Crime Watch tonight:

GATEWOOD CAR PROWLS: From Shawn – “I wanted to let you know about a car prowl last night/this morning. I came out to my car this morning around 6:30 to find the driver’s side door open and everything rifled through. They took some spare change and a handsfree device, and left behind some food. I found that the same thing happened to my neighbor’s car. This occurred in the alley between 36th and 37th Ave. SW, between Holden and Kenyon.”

ADMIRAL CONSTRUCTION SITE VANDALISM: Cindy reports this happened earlier this week at the Admiral site where she is building a house:

I am building a new modestly-sized house that is energy-efficient and environmentally responsible and sustainable in every regard. It will be net-zero in power usage as provided by the eventual roof-top solar installation. This is not a quick-turn developer box but rather a private home project. Someone opposed to this investment in our neighborhood did significant damage [one night earlier this week] to one of the retaining walls.

That included spraypainting the word UGLY on the wall.

ABANDONED BICYCLES: We have two reports, both from the Fairmount Ravine area, both with photos. The first one is from Breck:

Breck says, “Found this at the end of Sumner SW, down Fairmount SW. Hike into the path 30 yards and there it is … it looks like a teen’s bike.”

And from PHC:

PHC found it “on Fairmount, west side, under Admiral bridge. Suspect it is abandoned stolen bike.”

Recognize either one? Let us know, in comments or via editor@westseattleblog.com.

(WSB photo from 2015 West Seattle Car Show)

We’re reminding you again tonight that the annual West Seattle Car Show has moved up into August this year and it is just nine days away – Saturday, August 27th, 10 am-3 pm on the north end of the South Seattle College campus! If you have a vehicle to show off, you’ll probably find just the right category here; pre-registration forms are due ASAP – otherwise, you can register on show day. Find all the registration info here.

The show is presented again this year by Swedish Automotive and West Seattle Autoworks, and we checked back with organizers for the toplines of what you’ll find besides cool vehicles:

*The South Seattle College will be giving tours of the Automotive Tech and Aviation Maintenance programs.

*We will have kids’ activities, including a wooden race track our people are building with wooden cars for the kids to keep.

*The Northwest Wine Academy will be be open and serving coffee and beer, as a convenience to patrons, and wine, which is their specialty. They will also have light snacks.

*There will be at least 2 food trucks: Nibbles (specializing in northwest and southwest food) and Kebab Brothers (specializing in kebabs and hot dogs).

*The Seattle Chinese Garden will be open for viewing.

*We will be selling T-shirts, dash plaques, water, and ice cream.

*Larry Lomax will be DJ-ing again.

*The Disco Cowboys band will be playing again.

The day’s full schedule will be online next week. In the meantime, whether you’re planning to be in the show or just planning to come have fun, 6000 16th SW on Puget Ridge [map] is where you’ll want to be on August 27th.

West Seattle Autoworks, Swedish Automotive, and South Seattle College are WSB sponsors.

VIDEO: Duke Evers @ Summer Concerts at Hiawatha

Looking for shade? We found it on the east lawn at Hiawatha Community Center (Walnut/Lander), where Duke Evers is performing this season’s second-to-last show for Summer Concerts at Hiawatha, the annual series of free music presented by the Admiral Neighborhood Association. Our short video above includes part of what they described as a new song from an album coming out in November. We’ll add a few photos when we’re back at HQ, but just wanted to make sure you knew this is happening now, until about 8 pm, and there’s room on the lawn – bring your own chair or blanket.

(added) We didn’t stay for the whole show, but did see/hear a memorable moment – after the first few songs, a car alarm went off somewhere in the vicinity. The band, unfazed, riffed off it for a moment and declared they’d just created “The Car Alarm Song.” Soon as it was over, the alarm was too. “We played it out,” a band member joked.

P.S. Next week, summer’s last Hiawatha show, is the big one, at least for kindie-rock fans and the people who love them – Caspar Babypants, who tends to get the lawn as close to standing-room-only as a lawn can get, replete with a near-mosh-pit of wee ones up by the stage (6:30 pm Thursday, August 25th)!

TRAFFIC ALERT: Huge ferry traffic backup heading to Fauntleroy dock, and other problems

image

4:11 PM: Thanks for the tips – we just verified the HUGE traffic backup headed toward the Fauntleroy ferry dock – backed up all the way to Fauntleroy/Raymond!

Washington State Ferries attributes it only to heavy outbound traffic.

4:34 PM: Via e-mail, WSF says vessels are ~45 minutes behind schedule because of major crashes on I-5. Checking on those.

4:39 PM: We’ll be folding in any other major traffic notes while monitoring this: Here’s one – southbound 16th is blocked at Elmgrove because of a car fire. We just went by – no injuries, and the fire apparently was mostly in the engine compartment. (Photo added:)

IMG_5188

Thanks to Erik for the tip!

5:09 PM: SFD has cleared the 16th call so that’s likely reopened. We’re about to head down the hill for another look at the ferry backup. Also remember that if you’re heading for the eastbound bridge – the tape tangle mentioned earlier could be a factor (some of it was even snagged on a utility pole on the south edge of the Luna Park district). And a City Light truck is reportedly in a hazardous spot around that section of the bridge. (Update: Commenter says the SCL worker is trying to pull in the aforementioned tape.)

5:58 PM: Ferry dock-bound backup on west/southbound Fauntleroy better but not by much – goes “just” to California now.

6:23 PM: Crash reported (via scanner) at 34th/Morgan, with westbound Morgan reported to be blocked right now.

7:44 PM: We finally got to go by that scene about 15 minutes ago – tow trucks had arrived so the scene should be clear soon if it isn’t already. No Seattle Fire dispatch, so apparently no injuries of note.

ALERT: Tangle of tape by the West Seattle Bridge

IMG_3521

Here’s a weird one – just got two reports about this. The photo above is from Shannon Felix at Avalon GlassWorks, who reports, “Skeins of what I would think is vhs tape flying in power lines between bridge and Nucor.”

Also got a note from Holly, who reported, “Someone three black tape over the bridge and now it’s making its way into West Seattle.” We’re headed that way for a firsthand look.

West Seattle food and drink: A la Mode Pies sets tentative date. And about those milkshakes…

Continuing our followups on new eating/drinking places in progress, we checked in with Chris Porter, proprietor of A la Mode Pies, which – as first reported here in April – is coming to Junction 47, between The Lodge and Starbucks.

IMG_5895

Porter tells WSB he’s tentatively planning on an opening date of October 3rd, adding, “Neighbors will be smelling apple pie for about a week before, as we’ll be moving over our wholesale and cooking inside in late September.” The original Phinney location will remain open, since this is an expansion, NOT a replacement. Meantime, what he describes as a white-neon sign is set to go up before the end of this month. And we asked about the “boozy milkshake” names that WSB readers suggested in response to a call for suggestions in May – so far, he’s settled on two (both of which were among the suggestions), Admiral Apple and Drunk Monkey, with more to come.

FOLLOWUP: ‘Hate-Free Delridge’ is born; community event in the works

By Linda Ball
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

The fledgling group formed in response to a hate crime against a Pigeon Point family has named itself “Hate-Free Delridge” and is planning a community event.

We first reported two weeks ago about the group’s formation, in response to the racist, threatening note left on the porch of Stephanie Endres and her family last month.

The group just met for the second time. Its goal is to bring the community together while fostering acceptance, tolerance, and inclusion. Read More

Two cans closer to a less-trashed Alki Beach

Remember our June story about Diana‘s quest for Metro to bring back a trash can at the 61st/Alki bus stop? A customer-service rep had told her it was pulled (years earlier, it turned out) for overuse and wouldn’t be replaced. Then the next day – a replacement, after all. Today, Diana tells us, she’s scored bins for the corner to the east:

She explained to us via e-mail, “So as not to overburden the Metro trash can (as was their concern), I asked Seattle Public Utilities if they could install both trash and recycling bins on the opposite corner of 61st. Surprisingly, they responded saying my request met all the requirements to do so. It took eight weeks, and I had almost given up hope, but they miraculously showed up yesterday.” She sent the photo as proof. So if you’re at the beach sometime soon and use those new cans, you know who to thank. (If you’re having a big party, though, consider bringing bag[s] so you can pack it out.)

A last and a first! ‘Princess Bride’ wraps up this year’s West Seattle Outdoor Movies while launching new location

|    Comments Off on A last and a first! ‘Princess Bride’ wraps up this year’s West Seattle Outdoor Movies while launching new location
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle Outdoor Movies

The goofy classic “Princess Bride” is on the screen this Saturday night as the 2016 season of West Seattle Outdoor Movies comes to a close. But it’s not just an end – it’s a beginning, too, as the movies move to the new “festival street” (explained here), SW Snoqualmie between 36th and 37th SW, on the south side of the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor). The Southwest Seattle Historical Society (which sells and benefits from WSOM concessions) recorded this invitation from the Y’s Josh Sutton:

See the map to the new location on the SWSHS’s site; the Historical Society also will benefit from this week’s raffles. The movie’s free, and you can arrive as early as 6 pm; showtime is dusk, around 8:30 pm at this point in the summer. See you at the Festival Street!

West Seattle water views now part of Google Maps, along with Street View(s)

gsv

That’s a Google Street View mapping-photography car we spotted on eastbound Avalon at 35th this afternoon. Google’s 360-degree views from the road have been around for a while, but our sighting coincides with word we got this week that the mapping service is offering something new in our area: Water views.

A PR rep for Google Maps e-mailed WSB to say that West Seattle views on/from the water have recently gone live; the mapping service partnered with Coastwise Imaging, using the Trekker backpack system (you can see the equipment on the Coastwise site).

If you want to see the water views, you can click any of the following four links we were provided – Alki Beach (starting near Anchor/Luna Park), Alki Point, Duwamish Head (starts by Seacrest), and the Duwamish Waterway (starts near Terminal 5, with the image showing the Shell-related vessels that left two months ago) – among 20 Seattle waterway views now available via Google Maps.

PORT TRUCKS: New terminal-gate program to start next week, aimed at reducing backups

(SDOT webcam screenshot from June 2016 backup)

The Ports of Seattle and Tacoma are going to try something new starting next week in hopes of lessening truck backups as drivers wait to get into cargo terminals. From the announcement:

The Northwest Seaport Alliance will reimburse up to $2 million to extend gate hours at its international container terminals during peak season.

With cargo owners forecasting a 3 to 5 percent increase in volume during peak season, which will start in late August and continue through early November, the alliance proposes to help the marine terminal operators avoid congestion on surface streets in the port industrial area and keep import and export cargo flowing efficiently.

This program will reimburse terminal operators for some of the costs to operate flexed gates from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. and lunch gate hours Monday through Friday during peak season.

It also would provide one off-shift gate per week. Off-shift gates are after 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or any shift on Saturday or Sunday.

This is set to start on Monday (August 22nd), according to the full announcement, which you can see here.

UPDATE: Hit-run crash at Delridge/Cambridge

6:08 PM: Police and fire are at a crash scene on Delridge and Cambridge – avoid the area; we’re hearing that buses are being rerouted. We’re on our way to find out more.

IMG_5182

6:20 PM: Just arrived. Intersection just reopened. This is reported to be a hit-and-run; three people in the car that was hit are going to the hospital, we’re told, but none were seriously hurt. Police say the car that left the scene is red, possibly a Jeep.

West Seattle weather: Alert upgraded to ‘excessive heat warning’

WEDNESDAY REPORT: The heat alert from the National Weather Service has jumped to the next level – now it’s an “excessive heat warning,” 2 pm tomorrow through 9 pm Saturday. Tomorrow could reach the low 90s, with mid-90s possible Friday and Saturday; read the full alert here – and please note this line: “Never leave children, pets, or the elderly unattended in a parked vehicle under any circumstances.”

SATURDAY NOTE: The forecast is still calling for a major cooldown on Sunday, you’ll probably be happy to hear – high in the 70s. Then very-warm weather is forecast to return Friday (August 26th), with sunshine and 80s on Saturday (August 27th) in time for the West Seattle Car Show!

FOLLOWUP: Court fight continues over foreclosed Gatewood house, briefly put up for sale

IMG_5483
(WSB photo from August 2nd; house has since been taken off the market)

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

It’s been almost two years since a high-profile foreclosure fight led to disabled veteran Byron Barton and wife Jean Barton being evicted a second time from the Gatewood house they long owned.

Their fight, it turns out, is not over.

We heard from Byron Barton recently when the house at 6548 41st SW went on the market, listed at $1,299,000.

The listing didn’t last long. Barton said he pointed out to the listing agent that the title would be “clouded”; a court case involving the foreclosure had not been resolved. He told WSB, “I have spent $20,000 in legal fees and waited two years to get my home back.”

The house was taken off the market two and a half weeks later, according to NWMLS records Barton obtained.

The case is still before the Washington State Court of Appeals, Division 1, as the Bartons challenge the King County Superior Court ruling in their wrongful-foreclosure lawsuit against JP Morgan Chase, Quality Loan Service, and Triangle Property Development, the house’s current owner of record. The COA heard oral arguments in early June (see the docket here), and a ruling is pending. (As linked from the COA’s website, the Bartons’ brief is here; QLS’s brief is here; Triangle’s brief is here; Chase’s brief is here.)

In September 2015, the COA declined to overturn a separate decision against the Bartons’ challenge related to the eviction, but that ruling (see it here) specifically noted that it is not meant to be a reflection on anything involved with the still-pending wrongful-foreclosure suit.

Triangle bought the house in April 2014 for $646,000, according to King County records, half the recent listing price. In a comment on our first report about the Bartons in 2014, a Triangle representative said they intended to do remodeling/renovation work, not a teardown/rebuild, and city records show they did.

Meantime, Jean Barton is now president of SAFE (Standing Against Foreclosure and Eviction), the housing-justice group that rallied with the Bartons as they challenged the evictions in 2014.

(Added 5:43 pm: We asked Byron Barton where they’re living now; Renton, he replied.)

UTILITY WORK: In case you notice discolored water near The Junction today …

We have a Seattle Public Utilities update on the repairs happening on 46th SW near Hudson, southwest of The Junction:

Part of this repair necessitates shutting off water for a small number of residents on 46th Ave. SW. The work will be finished tomorrow and those who are affected by the water outage have been notified. While we do not anticipate any impacts to other residents’ water, any time the water main is disturbed there is the chance of discolored water. If residents experience discolored water they should run their taps for two minutes before drinking. This water is perfectly safe to drink, however.

This is work related to repairs we first mentioned last month, but not related to The Big Flush (here’s our recent update on that, in case you missed it).

Seen off West Seattle: US Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf

IMG_5891

Just happened to be at Don Armeni Boat Ramp and saw this U.S. Coast Guard Cutter passing by, headed toward downtown, so we looked it up. It’s the 418-foot USCGC Bertholf, homeported at Alameda, California. It made news in March for busting two drug submarines in less than a year; another article online describes the Bertholf as “the Coast Guard’s most advanced counternarcotics ship.”

P.S. Looks like it’s headed for Vigor on Harbor Island rather than for the Coast Guard station.

P.P.S. … or maybe not. A Vigor spokesperson tells us the Bertholf isn’t due for two more weeks – September 1st – for the work mentioned in the link above.

West Seattle Crime Watch: Stolen shrubbery; ripped-off rings …

Two reader reports today:

STOLEN SHRUBBERY: From C:

Heads up to our West Seattle neighbors: These are what is left of the 8 shrubs we planted in June.

20160816_101138_resized

Someone has made two trips to dig up 5 of them. Probably only a matter of time until they come back for the rest. We are out $600. We suspect someone doing a landscaping job cutting their expenses. If you hired someone who charged you for these, we have all been ripped off. People, this is why we can’t have nice things.

RIPPED-OFF RINGS: Watch for these rings in online listings, pawn shops, etc.:

Pic

They belong to a West Seattle couple who are getting married in a week and a half … and are now ringless. Their friend Wil sent the photo; Wil says the rings were stolen from the couple’s car in a parking garage on First Hill. If you see one or both, contact police.

FOLLOWUP: What the city says are your rights in case of cable (TV) outages

While most of the CenturyLink outage reports we covered here recently involved fiber internet access, some involved TV – and that caught the attention of a city division you might not have heard of: The Office of Cable Communications, part of the Information Technology department. We heard today from Jim Loter, a spokesperson for that division, which he explains “is responsible for regulating the cable television providers that offer services in Seattle.” He had seen the WSB reports and wanted to make sure you know about “customer rights during cable TV outages,” and pointed us to a new item on the city website Tech Talk which details those rights, including a pointer to the webpage for the Cable Customer Bill of Rights. Again, this is just for TV, not internet, but if you’ve had trouble with an unresponsive provider – it might help.
