UPDATE: 3rd West Seattle CenturyLink outage in 1 week

10:57 AM: For the third time in a week, we’re hearing from multiple West Seattle CenturyLink customers – via e-mail, Twitter, and comments – that their fiber Internet service has gone out again this morning. Locations mentioned in the messages we’ve received this morning include Admiral, Genesee Hill, North Delridge, and Beach Drive – sharing your general location in a comment, or message to us, helps, since otherwise there’s no mapping available along the lines of, say, a power outage. Some customers say CL has told them to expect service to return “sometime over the weekend.” Our previous reports are here (some were out all of last weekend) and here (an outage on Wednesday). We have a message out to CL’s media department again and will update when we hear back.

11:54 AM: Some customers are reporting they’re back up.

12:02 PM: A CenturyLink spokesperson replied to our inquiry:

CenturyLink has isolated the outage in West Seattle and continues to monitor the system to assure service availability. If customers are continuing to experience interruption to their high-speed internet or Prism TV services they should contact customer service 877-837-5738 and submit a trouble ticket.

They didn’t answer our question about what’s causing the outages, so we’ve asked it again.

5:36 PM: CL says “a hardware failure” is to blame.

Does anyone know why they are having so many outages and what’s causing them?

  • Brizone August 12, 2016 (11:52 am)

Yep, out again this morning near upper morgan junction @ 35th earlier this morning, but up now.

Seems like their DNS is/was down again.  Their PPP authentication server was the main part of the problem last week, but doesn’t seem to be a factor this time.

Mine is back up at the moment as of 30 minutes ago.

I’m near Alaska Junction, and didn’t notice any outage of internet today.

I am in Gatewood near Morgan Junction and we lost connectivity about an hour ago.  My DSL is through CenturyLink and my ISP is a local provider.  I immediately called the ISP.  They said many of their CL customers had lost connectivity.  I just got mine back about 20 minutes ago.  I have been reading about the earlier outages this week and was counting myself lucky.  Then it happened to me.  It would be great to know what’s causing this.  Construction-related?  Cutting a cable?  I hope CL responds to the WSB inquiry.  Thanks for the news and updates.

I have CenturyLink fiber and it went down several times this morning, but has been stable for the past few hours.  I’m near 49th and Dakota.

Party line guy here.  After some glitches this morning (fingers crossed) all seems well here between the Morgan Street and Alaska Street junctions.

Mine was up this morning but it’s down again as of 3:15. They have replaced a faulty part and weren’t sure what caused today’s outages.

We also have CL Prism TV and Internet, and both were out three times this a.m. We’re in the 3600 block of 35th Ave SW.

Tracy, thanks so much for following up with CL! I’d sure like to know what’s causing these problems.

We are in Gatewood and noticed that we were down around 8:30pm tonight .   All of our devices show that they are connected, but the download speeds are close to zero.  Called CenturyLink for the 3rd or 4th time this week – and the Fiberoptic repair person I spoke to wasn’t aware of this new outage.  After going through all the troubleshooting steps, I used what bandwidth we currently have to check the WSB and learned we weren’t the only ones!   Hopefully they can get this up and running again soon (as in tomorrow morning!)

My CL fiber/PrismTV were out this a.m. (35th near Camp Long). Took a few modem resets to get back online and tech will be by Sat to further investigate.  All these neighborhood outages are concerning.

CenturyLink just started servicing my neighborhood with fiber and has been marketing the service to all nearby residences. I’ve been considering switching from Comcast’s Xfinity service because I’ve been treated so poorly by their customer service team in the past. However, Comcast internet service has been very reliable with 150Mbps+ speeds and no significant outages within the last year. These CenturyLink fiber outages are making it really hard to switch. Maybe their service just isn’t ready for primetime yet.

I tried centurylink earlier this year but got the bait and switch from those sales people walking around.  I also thought Comcast customer service was terrible until I had centurylink.  Absolute nightmare.  Trust me, the reliability of Comcast is worth never having to deal with mess that is centurylink service.  I’m back at Comcast (250 Mbps) now and am quite satisfied considering the alternative.

Arbor Heights – Been “out” since Wed night. Finally called today to formally complain and ask for money   (having been aware this was a widespread problem and assuming it would get fixed the same time as everyone else, I didn’t want to waste my time previously).   Well… he was very nice.  And told me to move my ethernet chord from the ethernet port to the WAN/LAN port and MAGIC, it worked again. I swear that’s where it’s always been (in the ethernet port). Maybe not, maybe this is the one time I wasn’t diligent in putting something back together the way I undid it… but just in case this could be helpful to someone else, I’ll subject myself to the embarrassment. Double check where your ethernet chord is plugged into if you’re still having problems.

Man, after all these stories, i’m so glad we (reluctantly) signed up for comcast when the clearwire service ended…..

I’m in Arbor Heights and experienced 3 outages on Friday morning (Prism fiber internet and TV). I was back up and running around 10:00am and didn’t have any issues after that.

  • rpo August 15, 2016 (12:29 pm)

Centurylink just sent me a message saying a $50 has been applied to my internet account due to the Seattle outage.   I would think everyone should be getting the same thing.

Based on CL billing history, still be a good idea to doublecheck the next bills to make sure the discount gets applied correctly.
