Via Twitter, we also learn that Loki Fish Company plans to bring newly arrived whole fish; there are often other sightings, close to market time, tweeted by Farmers’ Market management at @NFMASeattle. Meantime – for anyone planning on checking out the Skillet street-food trailer while visiting the Farmers’ Market – not only won’t it be there today, as noted on its website, but Skillet may not be back in West Seattle any time soon, at least not according to an e-mail exchange shared by John L, in which Skillet proprietor Josh Henderson told him they were going to concentrate on their weekend catering business for now; we have sent Henderson a note asking for confirmation, no reply yet.

Our booth is located on Alaska Street beside Supper Supplements, facing Cupcake Royale and Swee Swee Paperie. The confusing part is that our generous sponsor providing the booth, WS Nursery, has a huge banner along the top of the booths. We had several gardening questions today that we couldn’t answer …
Our volunteers will be there Sunday from 11am – 7pm. You can still buy T-shirts ($15). We have all our building volunteers, but could use some help preparing food.

Out in The Junction for the West Seattle Farmers’ Market‘s 10th anniversary bash – huge crowd – but a couple things you might want to know if you haven’t been yet: The free berry mini-sundaes just ran out, after – according to the servers – they gave out about 600 in the first two hours of the market. There are unannounced freebies here and there – be sure to stop by the West Seattle Junction Association booth at the southwest entrance, where you’ll find free kids’ T-shirts (adults’ T-shirts with The Junction logo are $10) — Linda from Clementine was on duty when we stopped by:

We also discovered a surprise to the south – Skillet IS here in West Seattle today after all, though their schedule and Twitter feed said they’d be at the Sounders game:
The folks at the trailer told us it’s a mix-up (as was finally tweeted – though we tweeted the discovery first) – they got here and then found out they were supposed to be at the game, but it’s too late to pack up and move, so they’re here for the usual duration (till about 2). WEST SEATTLE FARMERS’ MARKET, 10TH ANNIVERSARY: This is tomorrow’s marquee event on the peninsula — “Berry Spectacular” is the theme for the celebration during the Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm at 44th/SW Alaska, marking its first decade in operation. Free berry mini-sundaes (including Husky Deli ice cream) are promised, along with other special additions including a “no-tax” tent sale (at the market site) by Square 1 Books (WSB sponsor), live music with Mozo, and free recipe booklets.
BONUS ROUND FOR ROTARY CLUB STRAWBERRY SALE: One more place to shop for berries tomorrow — Rotary Club of West Seattle past president Gary Potter sent this news of an added third day of strawberry sales:
The Rotary strawberries are usually all gone by 5:00 pm Saturday, but we have about 25 buckets left and are going to be open for business Sunday from 11 am to 1 pm in the Admiral Safeway back parking lot. There are approx. a dozen each of 7.5 lb buckets for $25.00 and 15 lb buckets for $38.00.
They’re also taking orders for the next two rounds of berry sales – blueberries and raspberries – more info here.

We got that video at a cheering station along Alki Ave during last year’s Walk with Us to Cure Lupus 5K — today, another sunny day for the fundraising walk, which starts from the Alki Bathhouse at 10, after check-in at 9 (more info here).
Also at 10, Furry Faces Foundation‘s plant sale/pet adoption event starts its second day at 3809 46th SW (map), continuing till 4 pm. Even more pets today, dogs and cats, and as of our visit around 2 pm yesterday, Riley (shown above with the Animals First Foundation folks) hadn’t found her permanent home yet. As for the plants? Vegetable starts and flowers, sun and shade, and if you’ve got questions, some great folks are there to help – like F3 leader Teri Ensley‘s mom Lila:
Gardeners who also enjoy beer and art have an event tailor-made for them at West Seattle Nursery – joining forces with Prost and Twilight for its first “Beer Fest” 1-5 pm, combining beer, gardening and art. Pretzels too, according to the WSN website. Part of today’s sales go to West Seattle Helpline in honor of the occasion.

Third – brunch! And beyond. We published a few notes last Thursday, “from Skillet to Skylark” — including an 11 am early opening today for WSB sponsor Cafe Revo. Also turns out that Skylark Club and Cafe (WSB sponsor) not only has the benefit brunch going on today, 9-3, but also karaoke starting at 7 – with an “auction” – bid on getting a participant to sing a certain song, and then they either can sing “your” song or bid higher and sing “whatever they want”!
Meantime, back to brunch, we also happened onto Circa talking Mom’s Day on FB and invited them to send a note for here – Nicole e-mailed us, “We’re usually not too busy on Mother’s Day, so come on down for a fresh, delicious brunch that won’t break the bank. Remember, though, parties larger than four can be in for a bit of a wait.” And Easy Street Records’ Cafe sent word of a Mother’s Day deal — read about it here.

The top deck of the Alaskan Way Viaduct will be full of people instead of cars this morning – the northbound section will be closed to traffic approximately 9-10:30 am, according to WSDOT, for the March of Dimes March for Babies. By the time it’s over, back on this side of the bay, The Junction will be bustling for two reasons:

That video is from the festival opening by Duwamish Tribe members last year – and this year, the Duwamish will do the honors again. 10 am-3 pm, there will be TONS going on — performances, discussions, demonstrations, involving dozens of organizations and businesses from all over the area, focused on community resilience (here’s the official program). WSB will be there – look for our table near the main stage (here’s the layout) along the east side of Wells Fargo – we’ve got the first 200 copies of the West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day Map, first come, first served! Then about an hour after the festival, it’s the start of the Pete Seeger 90th birthday celebration at the Admiral Theater:
The event has two main components – a documentary screening at 4 pm (“The Power of Song,” which includes that video clip), a “hootenanny” with performances and singalongs at 7 pm. See our preview here.
That’s Chas Redmond, who’s with Stu Hennessey from Alki Bike and Board at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market right now, handing out programs and signing up volunteers for the Sustainable West Seattle Festival, which happens one week from today, right across SW Alaska from the market. Chas also showed off small-scale versions of maps that will be at the Feet First/West Seattle Trails Alliance booth at the festival, with sharpies and sticky dots you can use to “visually vote” for the kind of transit you would like to see, and how you think transportation dollars should be spent:

WEST SEATTLE COMMUNITY GARAGE SALE DAY, SECOND DAY OF SIGNUPS: Between the Gathering of Neighbors in-person sign-ups and online registrations, the 5th annual WSCGSD is off to a roaring start. We’ll have news later today on where you can pick up mail-in forms if you need ’em, but in the meantime, you can register online at westseattlegaragesale.com (or print out a mail-in form from there). The big day is Saturday, May 9, with sales all over West Seattle (and if you don’t have room for your own but have stuff you want to sell, talk to Lora at Hotwire Coffee [WSB sponsor], who is opening her courtyard – she’s already signed up for a group sale but will be doing sub-signups (so if you’re going there, sign up with her, not us) for a donation that’ll go to WestSide Baby.
WSB photojournalist Christopher Boffoli is just back from the West Seattle Farmers’ Market and reports that the daffodils promised in today’s “fresh list” weren’t there, but, he adds: “Lots of tulips though. And I did find this lovely young lady named Caity from Monroe … selling fresh eggs from her own chickens that she raises, feeds and takes care of. I bought a dozen for $6 and even found a beautiful green egg among them.” The Farmers’ Market continues till 2 pm at 44th/Alaska.
Yogurt, daffodils, and order-taking for Easter ham/lamb are among the highlights promised by the Ripe and Ready list for today’s West Seattle Farmers’ Market (10 am-2 pm, 44th/Alaska). Also look for Friends of Junction Plaza Park, as they continue collecting pledges of volunteer help for the big push to get the long-in-the-works park done this year.

VIADUCT REMINDER: The second of the Alaskan Way Viaduct‘s two 12-hour inspection shutdowns is scheduled 6 am-6 pm (note that they often end “early” on the 2nd day) today, while the Battery Street Tunnel is to remain closed till 5 am tomorrow; go behind the scenes during shutdown day 1 in this WSB report.
