Less than four weeks until this year’s Gator Fair with community fun at Gatewood Elementary! This morning, we received this call for volunteers:
It’s that time of year again — when your middle schooler or high schooler casually reminds you about the 10+ hours of volunteer work they need for school! Fear not! The Gatewood Gator Fair is here to save the day!
The fair is Saturday 5/30 10:30-2:30; volunteers are scheduled 10-4 (but usually we are wrapped up closer to 3:30). This has been a great volunteer opportunity for middle schoolers and high schoolers for the last 3 years and we are excited for another year of fun!
Click here to sign up! All volunteers will receive a free volunteer shirt designed by Good Sister!
The school is at 4320 SW Myrtle.
That’s a screenshot from the charging documents we just received from the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, which announced that the suspect in Saturday’s Gatewood kidnap attempt, 22-year-old Cristien X. Bugge-Marcum, is now charged:
This afternoon, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged a 22-year-old Seattle man with Attempted Kidnapping in the Second Degree following a West Seattle incident. The defendant remains in jail on the $750,000 bail set by a judge.
The defendant’s next court date is his arraignment, where an initial plea is entered. That’s scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, in courtroom 1201 of the King County Courthouse. Defendants are innocent until proven guilty in court.
We’ll add narrative from the charging document shortly.
4:09 PM: Here’s the narrative, with redactions. It says Bugge-Marcum is originally from Sequim-Port Angeles, with a recent address in Northgate, but was in Gatewood last weekend staying with friends close to where this happened:
The juvenile victim is identified as (victim). The juvenile witness is identified as (witness). The following information is from the victim, witnesses, and from Cristien X. Bugge-Marcum.
On 4/25/2026 at approximately 1359 hours, officers were dispatched to (xxx) SW Othello St to investigate a report of an attempted kidnapping. The call notes read as follows:
“GROUP OF NEIGHBORHOOD CHILDREN PLAYING IN RP’S YARD, AND 8 YO FEMALE JUST TOLD RP A MALE SUSP TRIED TO GRAB HER ARM AND TAKE HER. SUSP LOCATION UNKNOWN.” (Third person) is the owner of the (XXX) SW Othello St residential home. He called 9-1-1. (Fourth person) lives at (another address on) SW Othello st. Her daughter is (friend, who) was at the neighbor’s house playing with other neighborhood kids. At 1343 hours, (xx) told (XX) to return home for lunch. She got this precise time by checking her doorbell camera which captured when she exited her front door. After going back into her home, she heard her dogs barking at someone walking eastbound past her house and on the south sidewalk. She looked outside and observed a white male carrying a skateboard walking past her house.
(Fifth person) lives at (XXX) SW Othello Way which is three houses east of the scene. (He) showed officers his surveillance footage. In the video, dogs are heard barking at 1:47:02 PM, a shrill scream is heard at 1:47:08 PM, a noise similar to skateboard wheels on a hard surface is heard at 1:47:29 PM, an object crashing on the ground is heard at 1:47:34 PM, a voice is heard yelling something unintelligible at 1:47:39 PM, a male enters the frame on the camera at 1:47:42 PM and is walking eastbound on the south sidewalk. The unknown male continued walking eastbound down the sidewalk and out of frame. In the footage, the only person observed was a white male with short hair wearing a white t-shirt, dark colored backpack, a skateboard in his left hand, black and white shoes, jean shorts that either sagged down near his ankles or were just long jean shorts.
(Victim) is eight years old and lives at (XXX) 36th Ave SW. On 4/25/26 she was playing with friends outside of (XXX) SW Othello st. At one point, she was outside alone and seated on a tree stump. The tree stump is about 35-40 feet away from the sidewalk and near the front of the house. She was looking into the open door of the home while waiting for her friend … to finish playing a game inside and join her outside.
During (victim)’s Child Forensic Interview (CFI) on 4/28/26, she stated the following:
While she was outside, a “guy” walked by with a skateboard and a backpack. She believed he was
wearing a black sweatshirt, but she thought nothing of it. She stated that 5 minutes later, that same
person grabbed her arm and tried to drag her away. (victim) stated that she screamed. When (Friend) came
to door after she heard her scream, the suspect ran behind the house and ran away.(victim) stated that she could not see the suspect’s hair and could not see if it was a male or a female but saw their blue/green eyes.
(victim) said that she could feel the suspect squeezing her arm and felt pressure. She saw the suspect’s skateboard and backpack on the ground when he was trying to drag her away. The suspect did not saying anything to her.
(victim) stated she was so scared her teeth were chattering and thought that she could have been killed. (friend) is 9-years old. (She) was inside the home when she heard (victim) scream. She looked outside and observed the unknown male pulling (victim) away. She described the male pulling (victim) with one hand while holding a knife in his other hand. (Friend) went inside and told another child what was happening who then relayed to an adult what was happening. When (friend) went back outside the unknown male was no longer in front of the home. She observed (victim) crying near the house.
Friend demonstrated the male pulling (victim) about 5-6 feet and away from the home.
On (Sunday) at approximately 1249 hours Bugge-Marcum was observed in the area of 36 Ave SW/SW Orchard St by officers. He matched the description of the surveillance footage seen by officers. Bugge-Marcum was contacted and taken into custody. He was transported to SPD Headquarters.
Bugge-Marcum was read his Miranda Rights and stated in a recorded interview that he has been living at the accessory dwelling unit at (XXX) SW Othello St for approximately one week with his friends … who he is in a “situationship” with. He is originally from Sequim/Port Angeles area.
Bugge-Marcum stated that on 4/25/26 he slept in and stayed …’s residence until approximately 1300 hours. He left to assist his mother with groceries and arrived at his parent’s house at approximately 1400 hours. He went shopping in Northgate at approximately 1600 hours. He returned to his parents’ house at approximately 1700 hours. He took a nap and left his parents’ house at approximately 2000 hours. He stated that he did not return to West Seattle until 0100
hours on 4/26/26.Bugge-Marcum stated that on 4/25/26 he was wearing jorts, a green zip up or a white Adidas zip up, a white t-shirt, and black and white sneakers, he was carrying a blue backpack and his skateboard. He had his cell phone on him and stated it was an android. Bugge-Marcum stated that the people in the neighborhood are uptight. He said he got in trouble
for smoking in the neighborhood and as a result, he walks eastbound on Othello St from …’s residence and then northbound on 36th Ave SW to the water towers to smoke. He thinks the neighbors might have pinned whatever happened on him.Bugge-Marcum provided an outline of his route on 4/25/26. He walked eastbound from ….’s to 36th Ave SW, then southbound to SW Webster St, then northbound on 35th Ave SW to the bus stop on the east side of 35th Ave SW. He stated that he did not see a single person when he was walking on SW Othello St. He said he went straight to the bus stop.
Bugge-Marcum denied touching anyone and said nothing out of the ordinary happened.
The updated police report included with the charging document says his “last known address” is in the Northgate area. The charging papers also confirm what we had noted in research, that he “no known WA criminal history.”
A judge has set bail at $750,000 for the man arrested one day after a reported kidnapping attempt in Gatewood. We first reported on the incident shortly after an 8-year-old girl reported it near 36th/Othello on Saturday afternoon; we updated the story this morning with police reporting an arrest Sunday. Today, the 22-year-old suspect appeared in court for a bail and probable-cause hearing. The judge agreed with the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office request for the $750,000 bail amount, though the suspect’s lawyer argued it was too high, given that he has no criminal history and denies the allegations. Prosecutors say a victim advocate read a statement from a parent of the child, saying in part: “It is only because of our local neighbors and our greater community watching out for one another’s children that an awful tragedy was averted.” Prosecutors say the judge also heard from the suspect’s mother, who said her son is not aggressive. The judge ultimately found probable cause for Attempted Kidnapping in the Second Degree with a deadly weapon enhancement; the suspect was reported to have been in possession of a knife.
According to the probable-cause document based on the police-report narrative, the victim was sitting by herself on a tree stump outside a residence, waiting for her 9-year-old friend, when a man tapped her on the shoulder, then “gripped her arm and attempted to pull her further down the driveway”; she screamed and her friend looked outside to see what she described to police as a man pulling her friend with one hand and holding a knife in his other. The friend told an adult, went outside, and the man fled. Police say surveillance video shows a man leaving the area “30 seconds after a scream is heard”; they say the suspect confirmed in his interview that he is the man shown in the video but “denies touching young children.” Prosecutors have until Wednesday to decide whether to (updated) rush-file charges, provided they get sufficient evidence from police; if the investigation takes longer, they still could charge the suspect at a later date.
2:30 PM: Police are in Gatewood to find out more about a possible child-grabbing attempt. The call is from the area of 36th/Othello, though it’s not yet clear whether this is where it happened, or just where the 911 call was made from around 2 pm. According to what’s been said over the air so far, an 8-year-old girl said a man tried to grab her, and another child with her is repprted to have confirmed seeing it happen. He was described as white, 5’6″ to 5’7″, brown hair, blue eyes, grayish-blue hoodie and dark shorts. No other info yet, and further details might be hard to come by, but we’re publishing this from the “better to know, just in case” standpoint.
2:41 PM: A few more description details – the man appeared to be in his 30s, wearing a white shirt, with a black backpack, and possibly had a knife. The officer taking the report told dispatch that if they found a suspect, the information constitutes probable cause for a kidnapping attempt, so we have changed the headline from grabbing attempt to kidnap attempt.
ADDED MONDAY: Police say they’ve arrested a suspect. Here’s the summary received in response to our followup inquiry:
Seattle police officers arrested a 22-year-old man for attempting to kidnap an 8-year-old girl in a West Seattle neighborhood Saturday afternoon.
On April 25 at about 2:00 p.m., patrol officers responded to reports of a man attempting to take a young girl while she played in a residential front yard with her friends. There, police found the child unharmed, yet “terrified,” according to the police report.
According to the probable cause statement, the suspect “gripped her arm and attempted to pull her further down the driveway and behind the neighbor’s home,” and the suspect tried pulling her “with his left hand while holding a knife in his other hand.” The girl screamed and alerted the adults. The suspect then fled the area before police arrived.
Officers searched the neighborhood, but they could not find the suspect. Cops found video evidence of the suspect fleeing the area and collected it for their investigation. Police distributed the suspect’s picture to all officers, department wide. On the afternoon of April 26, officers found a man matching the suspect’s description and arrested him.
Officers transported the suspect to Seattle Police Headquarters to be interviewed by detectives. Afterwards, police booked him into the King County Jail for Investigation of Kidnapping.
We hope to have a separate followup later on the suspect’s status.
From Tina in Gatewood, a report outside the usual lost-and-found bounds:
We live on the 3500 block of SW Ida and have a few bee boxes. Our bees swarmed today and before the beekeeper could collect them, they flew off. If anyone sees the swarm, we would love to get them back home.
If you see the swarm, let us know and we’ll connect you.
10:23 PM: Around 9:45 pm, a loud crashing sound rang through the California/Thistle vicinity on the Upper Fauntleroy/Gatewood line. Our photo shows the aftermath. A driver went through what was a fairly elaborate DO NOT ENTER barricade, over the raised concrete island, into the stub of California SW south of it, then turned around quickly and went back to the intersection. Too dark for us to see but someone called it in to SPD as a red Honda SUV that subsequently headed eastbound on Thistle. No injuries that we know of
11:02 PM: Someone already reported the damage to SDOT; a crew just showed up.
Spencer saw these bicycles left roadside in Gatewood:
If you recognize any or all of them, let us know & we’ll connect you.
First, from Julie:
Embossed leather bag, possibly a motorcycle pannier, found in the traffic circle at 39th Ave SW & SW Ida St. It’s empty and the leather flap is damaged, but please contact me through the Blog if you’d like to retrieve it.
Second, from Mike
2HP Craftsman compressor found in the street. 2400 block of 53rd Ave SW
If either is yours, email us and we’ll connect you,
It’s trash/recycling day in Gatewood, and a truck is reported to have brought down a wire/cable across SW Elmgrove west of 35th SW [map]. Police are there until City Light can come tend to it, though officers believe it’s a cable, not a live wire, and there’s no accompanying outage.
The 12′ skeletons seem ubiquitous. But not every Halloween display has a 7-foot eyeball. Tonight’s spotlight decoration photos were sent by Cameron.
Cameron says their display is near Gatewood Elementary.
So if you’re in the area and feel like you’re being watched … now you see why. And if you have decorations to show off, keep the pics coming … westseattleblog@gmail.com or text 206-293-6302 … thank you!
Tonight’s showcase West Seattle Halloween decoration is in honor of the Mariners‘ playoff win tonight:
Thanks to Yma on SW Portland in Gatewood for the photo! We’re showing decorations nightly through Halloween/Dia de Muertos – if you have a photo or two to share, whether it’s your display or someone else’s, westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you! (And good luck to the M’s in ALDS Game 4 tomorrow, at either noon or 4 pm our time!)
Again this year, West Seattleites who can’t or don’t want to go downtown for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s are invited to join an unofficial local mini-version the same day. It’s still in Gatewood, but with a different starting point this year. Here’s the announcement from organizer Pat:
Our local Walk To End Alzheimer’s is on October 4 (Saturday) – 9:30 am
Meeting at the water tower (35th and Myrtle) on Myrtle (different meeting spot than in past years)
We’ll do a mainly level walk along 35th, length negotiable!
It’s a great chance to connect with others and show support for this disease. (It’s the same day as the Seattle walk at Seattle Center. The West Seattle Alzheimer’s Caregivers support group welcomes all who want to stay in the West Seattle neighborhood and still show support. (You don’t need to sign up, but if you want to, go to the ALZ website and find your way to the West Seattle group.)
Free event. WEAR Purple if you have it!
=Here’s a map to 35th/Myrtle.
We’ve received multiple reports of this abandoned bike – Carol sent the photo:
Spotted this bike just up 44th Ave. SW (south) of the stairs down to Solstice Park.
Another mysterious disappearance of books from a West Seattle Little Free Library, days after this report. The newest report is from Steve in Gatewood:
As other readers have noted, our Little Free Library was totally emptied of over 50 books last night. All books in good shape from James Patterson to children’s readers.
The Little Free Library two doors down seems to have been untouched.
To put this in perspective, more than 3,000 books that people have loved have been dropped off and then picked up by other people with very little friction so I still call the operation a wild success.
I can’t imagine what the impulse was for this event but hope it doesn’t become a trend.

The banner says it all – Gatewood Elementary‘s third annual Gator Fair is on right now! Everyone’s welcome to join in free fun on the playground on the west side of the 4320 SW Myrtle campus:
Some activities and performances are scheduled – here’s the lineup:
The Gator Fair continues until 2:30 pm today (rain or shine!).
That sign marks the entrance to the dropoff spot for the next nonprofit-benefiting Women’s Clothing Swap, a little over two weeks away. Here’s the announcement sent to us to share with you:
After the success of our first swap, where community members scored amazing finds and even walked away with whole new wardrobes, we’re so excited to do it again! Join Leaps and Bounds Children’s Therapy for the Women’s Clothing Swap on Saturday, May 31st, from 11 AM to 3 PM at 7141 California Ave SW (Westside Unitarian Universalist Congregation).
Participants are encouraged to drop off gently used and clean women’s clothing (clothes, shoes, purses, and accessories) ahead of time to help streamline the swap. Donations can be placed in the designated bin by the sunflower wall in the parking lot during drop-off hours (Monday–Thursday, 10:30 AM–7 PM, and Friday, 10:30 AM–6:00 PM). For added convenience, local pick-up is available for a $20 fee. Day-of donations will also be accepted as space allows. Please label your bags with your name and contact information if you are planning to participate in our swap – no personal undergarments, please.
Entry is $20, with proceeds supporting Leaps and Bounds’ work with West Seattle families. Tickets (and raffle entries for a chance at early access) can be purchased in advance at www.leapsandboundswa.org/swap.
With West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day just past, this is a perfect chance to donate what you’re ready to let go of (but didn’t sell), and score some incredible new pieces for yourself (that you didn’t find). Some participants last time left with enough to rebuild their entire wardrobe, all for just $20!
This event is more than just a swap, it’s a fun way to refresh your closet, meet new people, and support a local nonprofit making a difference in our community. To schedule a donation pick-up or ask questions, email swap@leapsandboundswa.org. Hope to see you there!

Public transportation: Rapid Ride C line stop is Fauntleroy Way SW and SW Myrtle St.
It’s fundraising season for many school groups and other nonprofits. Among them, the Gatewood Elementary PTA, which has just launched an online auction this morning – anybody can bid. The parent who let us know about this points out, “With the significant budget cuts facing Seattle Public Schools, the support of the West Seattle community is more important than ever.” If you skim the auction site, you’ll see a wide variety of items up for grabs, including tickets, gift cards, memberships, more. Here’s the link to browse and/or bid! The auction is open for a week, leading up to the PTA’s in-person fundraiser a week from tonight.
If you’ve heard the booms from Gatewood, Upper Fauntleroy, Westwood, etc., those are fireworks, not gunshots. We’ve heard them all, and police in the area have seen them. We’re just mentioning it because we’ve gotten a few texts and dispatchers/calltakers say they’re getting deluged.
Reader report from Rebecca:
Today around 11:45 am, 36th and Myrtle. Just hanging out, drinking from the puddle. Crows were dive bombing (it)…
That’s right by Myrtle Reservoir Park. Meantime, our standard disclaimer – we publish coyote sightings for awareness, not alarm; here’s expert advice on coexistence.
That sighting of brown water flushing from a hydrant is what tipped us to a water outage in Gatewood. We were out walking when we spotted a Seattle Public Utilities worker flushing the hydrant at 39th/Rose [map]; he told us they were clearing the water from a “branch” before restoring service following a break further east on Rose. The SPU water-trouble map says 40+ homes were affected by the break centered near 35th/Rose; we walked past the hydrant again about half an hour after taking the top photo, and the water was running clear.
If you think coyotes only come out at night – think again. We just received that video from Rose in Gatewood, who reports, “At noon today we saw a big coyote walking down 39th Street next to Peace Lutheran Church between Thistle and Rose, going north. Got very close to someone walking their dog too and seemed pretty fearless.”
We’ve had daytime sightings before in our 15 years of coyote reports (scroll through the archive here), but they’re far outnumbered by nighttime/early morning sightings. Here’s succinct advice on what to do if you encounter one – most importantly, experts say, don’t run from it.
Thanks to Krista for the photo and report:
Returning from an early grocery run just before 7 am … three coyotes ran across Holden and down 36th toward Kenyon. I circled around and grabbed a photo of the group!
You can browse past sighting reports here. We publish them for awareness, not alarm, and information like this can help us and them stay appropriately apart.
