FOLLOWUP: Still awaiting Morgan Junction EV-charging lot construction

When last we checked in on the future Morgan Junction EV-charging lot, the city said construction would start in October. That month ended with no sign of construction, so we checked in again.

While the project website now says “late 2025” for the start of construction on the eight-charger lot, we asked Seattle City Light spokesperson Jenn Strang if they could be more specific, and Strang said November, adding, “We’re currently working through pre-construction activities with the contractor.” As we reported a month ago, Zenisco Inc. won the contract with a bid of $823,250.

Waiting for the chargers to be installed …

Love that image. Very much captures what I was thinking. I hope we are wrong. 😑

I own 2 EVs, and love them and would NEVER go back to old fashioned gas powered cars.  That being said, just stop this project.  Dozens of chargers have popped up all over the region while this is just sitting.  If you can’t build an EV charger in 4 years, you are 100% incompetent.  This isn’t nuclear fusion. It’s not start-of-the-art.  It’s just a bit of electricity.  This is SO embarrassing this has taken more than 12 months.   Every year this charger get discussed I just laugh.

Wut? David. A lot of the Stations have been vandalized because they weee put into bad locations (under bridges and dark lots). The Chargers by the bowling Alley are almost alway taken when working, the next Level 3 charger in the area is SBUX Corp and those are busy and expensive. We need more charging infrastructure.

Is the charger under Whole Foods ever going to get fixed? It’s been broken for FOUR YEARS.

Maybe the Whole Foods parent company is struggling with making ends meet and just can’t afford to fix it? Or, oh, wait, it’s Amazon, one of the most valuable companies on the planet.

Spot on, David.ev owner here in west Seattle—cancel this. Just put in some grass and let the groundwater recharge on a little patch of dirt. More public benefit at this point in tech lifecycle.

I feel for EV owners without home charging. Seattle.gov could help them by subsidizing installations in single and multi-unit dwellings. This could include incentives to builders for including charging systems in new and upgraded construction projects. This might also be a deterrent to charging cable theft and vandalism. Better put my armor on now in advance of the curmudgeonly and NIMBYesque responses.

My nice but older apartment runs on a 60amp breaker box. There is no way city (or state) subsides are going to be sufficient to bring in a new electrical service. If you want residents of older apartment buildings to be able to buy a plug in vehicle, this sort of project is essential. I would not consider a 2 car charger at some random location viable. Working people/parents need to know they can actually charge their vehicles if they were to buy an electric vehicle.

“We’re currently working through pre-construction activities with the contractor.”   What in the love of heaven does that even mean?  Wow.

This is such a waste. There are companies that will install charging stations at apartment buildings and other locations and I’ve facilitated this myself. Took 2 days to have an electrician upgrade the electrical box in a 35 year old building. Whatever the issue is at Whole Foods is not because Amazon can’t afford to fix it, it’s because the building management or ownership hasn’t prioritized it. Quit this project and approve the skate park and play area across the street!
