Does anyone know what organization is represented by those young people on opposite corners of the junction, holding posters of Obama with the Hitler mustache? Is it Larouch, or teabaggers or what? I’ve never seen this in person, though I’ve seen the pictures of these posters. In person, it’s horrific. That these young people are capable of appropriating the image of the person responsible for the murder of 6 million Jews, and dishonoring the incomprehensible suffering perpetrated by the Nazis in order to further their stupid propaganda tricks, just took my breath away. I told one of them that he should be ashamed of himself, to which he petulantly replied “I’m not.” I told two others in passing “You guys are disgusting,” to which they politely replied “Thank you.” Whoever they are, they have a serious problem with reality and are heartless little bas____s.

I don’t know who they are, but I learned a while ago that sometimes there’s just no point in talking to people like that. You may feel like you have to say something before they do any harm, but I think the reality is that they mostly make themselves look bad and only convince people that already agree with them.

Pretty sure it’s LarouchePAC. Not very good at getting their message out if they don’t even identify themselves!

Yeah, about 99% sure it’s LaRouche. I used to see them around UW when I was in grad school about 4-5 years ago. They showed up near where I work now last summer, but a) they didn’t come on campus, I suspect because it’s a private institution, and b) summer session is DEAD so I doubt they got much traffic.

You could do what some friends of mine did when they were at UW. They made up signs parodying LaRouche and marched around with tinfoil hats on…

Are these the same guys who paraded around with posters of Bush looking like a monkey? You know, Bush lied people died – or some such sort.

Do they wear pink shirts while disrupting civil conversation and throw pies in the faces of people they disagree with?

    Very irritating, I agree.

It’s LaRouche. About half a dozen people have e-mailed us about this in the past couple hours, which surprises me because they have been around at various spots for quite a while. They were at Westwood a couple weeks ago. Maybe new generation of “La-WHO?” Anyway, for anyone who missed it, a local Twitter user posted a photo to his feed.

    http://twitpic.com/10dz8g

You can see the LaRouche logo on the poster.

Another Twitter user claimed the police came and broke them up in the past hour or so. What merited a police call, I don’t know.

If you foolishly attempt to talk to a LaRouche supporter it is an interesting experience. They descend on you in pairs with classic intimidation and brainwashing techniques. If you challenge them with facts or reason they quickly become hostile. How ironic that they choose to use an image of Hitler when their own approach is so classically fascist. Is LaRouche even alive? If so, who cares?

I got into a pretty heated debate with one of them regarding the banking meltdown last year. He ran out of scare tactic phrases after about 2 minutes and I figured out he had NO IDEA what he was talking about and moved on. I wouldn’t waste your time trying to have any meaningful conversation with them- they have no credibility.

As much as people like this bug the pi$$ out of me, there is worse. I lived in KS for the last 8 years and although KS itself is not bad, it does contain Fred Phelps and and westboro baptist church. At least these Laduche (spelling?) folks don’t have 4 year olds holding up signs saying, “GOD HATES FAGS” and “Thank god for IED’s”. Trying to discuss anything with them is a nightmare. So my final point, if anyone wants to go out with some comical counter protest signs, count me in!

DOC, I believe it is spelled “LaDouche.”

Oh, and Smitty, Bush did, and people have.

And we all look a lot like the monkeys and apes we are so closely related to.

Smitty and Dawsonct, I can actually do quite a good monkey face. I pull my ears out and blow up my cheeks. It’s pretty darn good. And thanks for the spelling tip Dawsonct, I didn’t want to be that direct, but I’m glad that my point was appreciated.

We completely agree with you and have found their poster to be extremely offensive. They don’t seem to care. :( I hope they leave West Seattle!

Curious if these clowns show up tomorrow and join the good ‘ol Alaska Junction/All-Walk/stupid sign/War Protest/sit in?

That seems to have fizzled a bit since “the One” added 50,000 troops to Afghanistan, but I’m sure they will return in force soon! Right?

    Be loud! Be proud!

Smitty, what do you mean by “That seems to have fizzled a bit since “the One” added 50,000 troops to Afghanistan, but I’m sure they will return in force soon! Right?”

What has fizzled? A war protest is a great thing. Obama with a hitler stash, not so much of a great thing. He is not, nor ever was “the one”, but he is a lot better than the village idiot we had in the past.Oh, and since when does 30k=50k?

    DOC,

By village idiot, do you mean Greg Nichols,

    the urban village mastermind?

I agree making Obama look like Hitler is BS., but I also see Smitty’s point that all of our politicians are fair game. I’m just thankfull we

live in a country where you have the right to

    protest!

I am in favor of protests..

if anything can be called the American Way

Standing up for what you believe in has to qualify

    but mindless name-calling?

    personal slurs?

    not so much.

the ugliness that is sold to us as political discourse these days would have gotten mouths washed out with soap in my youth…

maybe mom had a better idea than i thought

Dunno, no I was talking about Bush, refering to the phrase, “somewhere in Texas, a village is missing their idiot”. I am all about comparing someone (Bush) to a chimp because it implies a limited mental capacity. However there of course is the problem with being able to compare Obama to a primate because it is seen as a racial comment regardless of the intent behind the comparison. However comparing just about anybody to hitler is going a bit too far for me, even if the comparison is Bush or Cheney.

    Smitty…

your insinuation that the anti-war protests are just more of the same bipartisan bickering bothers me.

that you would attribute lowered numbers of protesters in the junction during flu season to “the One” adding “50,000 troops to Afghanistan” only illustrates the partisan filter through which you look at the world.

I can’t speak for the individuals who have the stamina and the persistence to stand up for what they believe in at the junction every week..

but as a long term “peacenik” I can assure you that war waged by democrats is no more palatable than war waged by republicans.

Instead of making fun of those protesters…

you might ask yourself if you care enough about anything…

to face public ridicule by standing up publicly for what you believe in…

week after week… year after year.

    Agree with them or not…

you have to admire their perseverance.

JoB, we’ve disagreed on issues in the past, but not this one. I think it’s important that we can disagree in a civilized manner, and come together again for the common good. Your last post was quite eloquent; thank you for it!

Again I don’t like the name calling ect. Lets face the facts, there were the same posters depicting Bush as Hitler, and a lot worse. I remember going the WS street fair several years ago and a vulgar bumper sticker about Bush was on display at the Dem’s booth.

I guess that OK for kids to see though.

The Hitler pic is stupid and has been applied to Bush and others by the LaRouchie nutcrowd but the thing I saw at the Junction display that makes their trip a little more offensive is the addition of racism to their bag of tricks. They had a big sign reading “Obama is a cracker!” Now, I know that the term cracker means a white Southern bigot. Its a race-baiting term and I asked the guy how Obama could be considered a cracker. He just looked at me and said “You’re a Fascist”.

Obviously, the dumba** doesn’t know what a cracker is or what a fascist is. For people that are putting up a table in a public place to advocate for a cause, their manner of speaking to people who bother to stop and chat isn’t very inviting. I chose to move on rather than waste time talking to a human fence post.

I do appreciate the war protesters who persevere in advocating for a worthy cause in the face of an apathetic public. the wars we are currently involved in are morally and practically wrong whether prosecuted by Dems or Repubs (tho its certainly Repubs who started them and kept the price off budget as they looted the Treasury for their Military-industrial cronies)

    JoB,

My “filter” is NPR, MSNBC and DailyKoS if you really want to know. I enjoy listening to the other side – it reinforces my views (for the most part) and yes – on occasion changes them. Can’t say the same for the other side (at least the ones I know) as they also listen to NPR, watch MSNBC and read DailyKos.

It always makes me wonder which side really has the “open mind”.

And as to: “face public ridicule by standing up publicly for what you believe in…week after week… year after year.”

I agree, but they need to keep it up! You own both houses of congress and the White House. Now is the time for (Hope and) change!

    Smitty..

you read Daily Kos every day and can say that “we” own the White House and Congress with a straight face?

You must overlook terms like conservative democrats and blue dogs thinking they are some kind of joke… or have missed the Emperor Leiberman’s latest performance…

If only… tho to be honest i am not so sure it would make any difference since our elected officials are owned by their campaign donors…

My brain isn’t tracking well enough to source this.. but someone suggested recently that our elected officials should be required to wear their sponsorships like Nascar drivers.. to make it easier to follow the money…

Of course, that won’t happen. This illusion only persists if we can trick ourselves into all thinking this is just bipartisan quibbling.

As for listening to NPR to get the “other”side????

Is that the same NPR that chose to recap the life of Howard Zinn on All things considered on January 28 by giving David Horowitz airtime to criticize his lifetime contributions?

When William Buckley died, NPR remembered him with 6 commentators who didn’t bother to mention his stand on apartheid… not to mention his comments regarding segregation in the south… or to criticize this great thinker in any way.

Perhaps it’s the same NPR that on another program characterized Obama supporters as the far left fringe of the left?

The same NPR that didn’t question int he same program why organizations that can deliver record numbers of calls to Congress on a issue are given less political weight than far fewer calls from the teabaggers?

Calling NPR or MSNBC left is overlooking a great deal of their programming. I hate to keep repeating this… but left of far right isn’t left.

If you want to hear the rhetoric of the left.. not the pseudo i am really republican in everything but party affiliation left.. try LINK TV or Air America… They can be real eye openers.

I too listen to and read the great American middle… and thanks to keeping up with conservative grandchildren i visit sites like the Heritage Foundation far more often than i think is healthy for my sanity.

I confess. i refuse to tolerate a daily dose of FOX TV commentators or Rush Limbaugh even for the sake of broadening my horizons. I am too biased towards rational thought and fact based arguments and the inclusion of Sarah Palin as a commentator is a good indication they aren’t moving in that direction any time soon:(

But i have read Rush.. much to my chagrin.. since he once had pride of place on my son’s bedroom shelf. And i have read Cheney… and i often go far beyond the front page of the Heritage Foundation and other similar sites.

I also avoid the daily KOS.. i don’t think he does rational argument any service… he is often as inflammatory about the left as Russ or FOX is about the right…

The truth is that this polarization and inflammatory political doublespeak is designed to remove all sanity from political discourse and from voting.

It really is in the best interests of those corporations who have become super people.. all the rights and then some and none of the responsibilities… to determine the winner through the best advertising campaign.

And for those “clowns” at the junction????

I couldn’t stand at that Junction every week.. i couldn’t maintain that kind of optimism… believing that doing so would make a difference…

i speak up from the safety and warmth of my living room… not on a public streetcorner where people can throw words or worse… been there.. done that…can’t do it any more :(

Knowing just how difficult that kind of commitment is… i think it’s pretty easy to place expectations.. rain or shine.. sickness or health.. personal conflicts aside… on them… that you wouldn’t keep yourself. Think about what it would take to walk a mile in those shoes.

I respect them a great deal for their commitment no matter how many or how few days each individual shows up. it takes guts i don’t have to keep at it as long as they have.

One think i can guarantee.. stop to talk with them and you will find intelligent articulate people who care deeply about their cause and understand it well enough to defend it.

Who knows, given the opportunity, they might just change your mind..

Being a Independent I too want to hear all points of view. To me Sarah Palin is about the biggest turn off ever.

On the other hand I think Hilary Clinton is doing a splendid job, and would love to see her in the oval office. In fact she and Obama should swap in 2012.

BTW, Air America is on its last leg. Bankrupt.
