I was very angry to read the news about the little brats who were harrassing the geese near Lincoln Park. All of you who live or walk in that area, please keep an eye out for the losers who tried to kill these beautiful birds. Yell and give ’em hell.

Sonoma, I promise to do just that. There are also some dog owners who think it’s OK to let their dogs chase or harass wildlife, sometimes even letting them off leash to do so.

Thanks! Those geese give so many of us pleasure – a definite highlight of any beach walk. Beautiful, and with amusing personalities.

I love dogs, but owners need to control them. But that’s a whole ‘nuther can of Alpo.

While the nasty wretches who hurt these geese are terrible, I also think we need to feel comfortable scolding others’ children who chase them in fun. Many kids (even toddlers) play a “fun game” of causing geese, gulls, crows, pigeons, etc to run by scaring them. I have been known to scold/educate kids in their parents’ presence because I think some parents don’t even think about teaching young ones not to scare wildlife. Often I hear, “it’s just a bird,” which opens the door for talking to parents in front of their kids about the animal’s point of view, feelings, life, etc. I’m not usually so preachy but, animals and others who have no voice get my protection.

I agree, Robindianne. Is it really so much fun to scare little animals? I saw a kid throwing rocks at a pigeon, and I gave him the stink-eye. He stopped and looked sheepish. Pigeons are not the most beloved of birds, but throwing rocks is nasty. Some parents are clueless, or too spineless to take a moment to educate their kids.

As of this evening, the geese are OK. One of the women who work at the ferry dock visits them sometimes. I saw her this evening, directing ferry traffic, and I asked her to keep an eye out for the birds when she isn’t busy. She said she would. Very kind of her. There’s also a rather cute dark-haired patrolman (!) who directs ferry traffic, and I’m sure he would not put up with animal cruelty, either. And I remain, the vigilant Vigil-Anti-Maim.
