JanS — pretty basic quiz, but I should point out it uses Canadian rules, eh? I guess I benefited from having this stuff drilled into me in parochial school, cuz I scored 88%. Missed 4, but I won’t say which so I don’t spoil it for future generations. I will say that these are the kind of mistakes I hear on TV ‘news’ shows and am beginning to see creep by newspaper editors.

Speaking of grammar, if you really want to see some creative spelling, turn on the closed captions for any local news show or any live broadcast. There are a couple of ways to live caption (rather than using the script the ‘talent’ is reading from.) It often appears the captioners aren’t briefed ahead of time and don’t always have a good grasp of context. Today, I saw a caption referring to our ‘bright blew skies.’ This is not a rag on the captioners but rather on station management for not paying enough attention. If I actually relied on captioning, I often would not be able to follow the stories.

Well, according to the title song from ‘Hear Come The Brides’, ‘The Blewest Skies You’ve Ever Seen Are In Seattle’

    or

JoB — I think you mean you ‘blue the dial’. I know what you mean, tho. I didn’t really see a ‘dial’ so I just clicked on the word I wanted.

looks like the person who wrote this acceptional piece for City Light should have gone to parochial school:

‘Comments will be excepted through October 18, 2013.’

The live-captioning services are not working from the station (it’s outsourced) so there is no opportunity to be briefed. Not necessarily an excuse. And since I’ve been out now for six wonderful years, I would not be surprised if it’s not even a service performed by humans any more.

I scored 100% (public school + nuns in catechism). The scary thing is that any sixth grader should pass this quiz with flying colors; the fact is that many college students these days would not.

But why should they need to have the knowledge to pass the quiz, when they have spill chick, grandma chuck, and auto erect? ;-)

I may take the quiz again, but did so already, probably on FB, and I think I missed maybe two.

Mike, it surprises me that you would miss any at all. I find your writing very eloquent, accurate and always a joy to read.

I missed two! The i.e. e.g. questions. I don’t think I’m any more likely to use those in my writing than I did before, but at least I learned the difference.

@Lindsey – me too! Those have always confused me. Oh, I did mess up the “whom” question, too. Usually I’m the only one to get that right. :) Gonna give this quiz to my kids (10th grade and college freshman) to see how they do.
