DBPMemberGood deal, wake? Yah, maybe. In the total scheme.
But technically, it’s still gonna be a money loser. Just like parks and museums.
And yeah, even some school systems. (Not sayin’ any naaaaaames but . . . starts with “Sea” and ends with “ttle.”)
All I say is let’s get the money-loser thing out there and stop wasting time on financial falderal. Let’s put our chairs in a circle, all say our first names, and admit that we are powerless over sports and that our lives have become unmanageable.
There is no shame in this whatever, people. It’s a disease, remember? Not a sin.

So Schmansen Arena is going to LOSE MONEY, but that’s OK, because it will STILL going to bring joy to the hearts of Seattle.
I get that now, and I’m good with it.
Just be honest about that, Seattle.
Have I ever asked you for anything more?
Have I ever given you anything less?
Honesty!

PDieterParticipantThere are a lot of regulations on carts/trucks and they are changing rapidly but I also think we need to be fair to the brick and mortars in places like alki beach who have to pay rent year round instead of just pulling up on sunny days when business is booming. I don’t want to see chain carts like monster dogs or a falafel chain trailer every 60 yards along the beach like they are in Manhattan. Maybe a couple spaces on a rotating lottery basis would be fair in months when there’s business enough for all
But Cream Cheese Bagel Dogs are yummy

DBPMemberSo how far afield do you wanna get from Sam Cooke?
Do you know how Pandora works? Just start a Pandora station with Sam Cooke. Two hours, three hours tops, ya gotcher list and then some.
How about Otis Redding? Bill Withers? Low Rawls (“Your Good Thing” Good edgy number for a wedding.)
James Hunter (“People Gonna Talk” More yuks for the wedding guests.)
Nat King Cole might be a little fringe for that set. But you’ll have way more fun if you treat it like “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” instead of having a single obvious theme.
Trust me.
Oh yeah. And another thing . . . you’re the only who’s gonna remember the whole set 5 years from now, so if you hit a flat note or two, who cares?

DBPMemberNope. I’m with you, wake.
Climate change deniers of the Inhofe ilk are more harmful than people who drive Humvees, use wood stoves, and take cruises.
But the reason the Inhofes of the world exist at all is because the rest of us really DON’T want to face reality and make the lifestyle and political changes necessary to save the situation.
In a weird way, middle-of-the-roaders like President Obama actually appreciate Inhofe, because he allows Obama to look like he’s proposing bold things on the environment, when what he’s really proposing are just some watered-down half-measures and sell-outs.
Now that Al Gore’s written his book and won his Nobel (still waitin’ on mine) we can comfortably ignore what he was saying. Just by giving Gore the Prize and buying his book, we’ve done something for the environment, right?
* * * * * * *
BTW, here’s my current solar production, backdated by about 15 minutes:
According to the government, my solar electric system has so far prevented carbon emissions equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by 110 young trees growing over a period of 10 years.
Sincerely,
Mr. Goody 2 Shoes
April 1, 2013 at 9:22 pm #746473In reply to: Conflicting Science in Global Warming/Cooling
DBPMemberYou know, wake, in a sense we are all “deniers.” People like Inhofe are just a little deeper in denial than the rest of us.
Everyone who is contributing to the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere at a ppm rate higher than what can be sustained without causing irreversible environmental damage is in denial.*
In other words . . .
Everyone who is still driving an oil-powered vehicle (e.g., me) is in denial.
Everyone who flies in or builds aeroplanes (e.g. all my friends) is in denial.
Everyone who has more than 1.8 kids is in denial.
Everyone who eats MEAT is in denial.
In short, every American is in denial.
But thanks for your efforts here anyway. I support what you and others are trying to do.
***********************
*Depending on who you talk to, a “safe” number would be 300 ppm of CO2. We are now in the 390s and rising.
Sorry if this material has already been covered here.
April 1, 2013 at 5:43 pm #786942In reply to: What songs speak (uh, sing?) to you?
DBPMemberSeriously . . . Songs that speak to me?
How much time ya got?
I find it interesting that a couple of folks here said “Jessica.”
The early Allman Bros were one of the few bands whose music could actually sound better live than when it was all polished up in the studio. It’s like one long jam session.
There are even fewer bands that can do that today. Now they don’t just need tons of multi-track digital crap, they need video and light shows backing ’em up, or they lose the audience’s attention . . . ‘cuz musically, they SUCK!
And I’m not even talking about auto-tuning.
Here’s a rare live-studio version of what I consider to be the Allman Bros’ greatest contribution to music. One of the best blues-rock recordings of all time.
And note, for the “record” that, unlike 99.997% of people doing blues-rock during this era (Zep, Stones, etc.) they actually gave CREDIT to their source . . . in this case a Black man, to whose original song the Allmans’ version owed practically NOTHING.
As my friend Mark always says: “Turn it up!”

March 30, 2013 at 10:53 pm #787032In reply to: Planned Parenthood – Post Abortion Rights
Spring ChickenMemberRegarding this being “in today’s news” Tesla I could only find the quote you referenced on “pro life” websites and not in any legitimate news source.
At issue is Florida House Bill 1129, which “Provides that infant born alive during or immediately after attempted abortion is entitled to same rights, powers, & privileges as any other child born alive in course of natural birth; requires health care practitioners to preserve life & health of such infant born alive, if possible; provides for transport & admittance of infant to hospital; provides certain services for infant; requires health care practitioner or employees who have knowledge of any violations with respect to infants born alive after attempted abortion to report those violations to DOH; provides penalty; provides for construction; revises reporting requirements.”
This bill is another attempt by Republicans in Florida to ban all abortions. The words “infant”, “child”, and “born alive” are deliberately misused because none of these describe conditions in a legal abortion. The bill is unnecessary because current laws already restrict abortions performed after viability. The ultimate goal of this bill is to set a legal precedent by giving fetuses the same legal rights in Florida as babies, so that later laws will be able to restrict all abortions as “killing” babies. Once the law requires life support for fetuses, the next step will be abortion banned as murder.
Here’s a link to the Florida Legislative Session from which the quote was taken (starts about minute 40): http://tinyurl.com/floridalegsession
Notice the way Rep. Oliva words his questions to inflame emotions. His questions aren’t about seeking medical information. This is all political. He tries to pressure the Planned Parenthood representative into agreeing with the proposed law, but she won’t play his game (as a result, she’s been labeled an inhuman monster in the right wing blogosphere). He describes “infants”, “born alive on tables”, “struggling for life” none of which happen in a legal abortion procedure. There is no epidemic of “botched abortions” or “partial birth abortions” or “post birth abortions” these words are all political creations, not medical terms!
When you told us there’s a doctor on trial for unlawful abortions, that only proves existing laws are adequate and enforced.
I urge you to reconsider your sources for “news”, watch the clip and notice how your quotation above has taken words from this interview out of context. Think for yourself, don’t allow your emotions to be manipulated!

DBPMemberYou’re getting warmer, bro. But, personally, I like to think of you as Paul Newman to my George Kennedy.
Ya know . . . Cool Hand Luke?
I’m guessing you’re old enough to know what I’m talking about. (The rest of you can watch the movie for yourselves.)
Luke (that’s you) keeps getting knocked down, but he keeps getting up again.
Finally, he’s all woozy and he’s just swingin’ blind. And Dragline (that’s me) knocks him over with a tap.
(“somebody oughta stop this thing”)
But Luke just WILL NOT stay down. He’s got more heart than brains.
And so, in the end, Dragline, with hardly a scratch on him, just gives up and walks away. He can’t believe anybody would not know enough, when he’s beat, to just stay beat.
So yeah. I’ll always win ya.
But then, I’ll always just be Dragline.
And you’re Paul Newman, man.
Mutherfuq’n Paul Newman!
Cool Hand Luke
That’s what I like about you.

No. Of COURSE not ALL women.
But, yeah, as a rule, they do. They like drama, and they like to argue.

And you know what else they like?
They like to have the last  Â

    Word
Â
Â
And that’s a problem. Do you see how that’s a problem?
Because you can’t have the last word AND keep arguing, too.

Can you?

Yes, there are areas of more highly concentrated WEIRD-ness. But this spot has coolness. The two things are not the same.
So naturally the Fauntleroy area is where they’re gonna put one of these leprechaun libraries.

The dog’s head is on a back alley off SW Thistle between 15th SW and 14th SW. (It’s mislabeled on Google Maps as an extension of SW Elmgrove which it most definitely is NOT.)

DBPMemberOK, so just go get a caramel then!!
That’s like a wish. It’s something you can actually have.
Maybe you shouldn’t have it, but you can if you really want to.
A fantasy, on the other hand, is something you know you really can’t have, no matter how hard you wish for it.
But then . . . maybe a miracle happens, and somehow you get it.

DBPMemberWell, well, well.
Perhaps Mr. Morrow’s karma is finally catching up with him after all.
He apparently thought — when he hatched this plan to move a bunch of homeless folks from all different backgrounds onto City land – that he could fling the doors wide open, hand everyone a list of rules (see link below) and rest easy, knowing that he could always intervene directly if things ever got out of hand.
How naïve can you be?
So . . . OK. There’s drugs there. [Surprise!]
Of course there are drugs there.
And violence.
And other bad behaviors.
That stuff has been there all along. But it’s always been manageable, as long as there wasn’t too much of it, and as long as Mr. Morrow’s authority went unchallenged.
But now things are getting out of hand, to the point where even the Great Oz can’t control it anymore.
In other words . . . the inmates are running the asylum.
And you know what? The cops and the City are juuuuuust fine with that. As I’ve been saying for some time now, they’re just looking for an excuse to shut the place down, so they don’t have to be the “heavy” and evict everyone for some less compelling reason. (Like, for instance, someone else buys the property.)
See how that works?
Folks thought they was playahz.
But they ’bout ta get played.

(snark) Nonetheless, I think crummy-looking neighborhoods are contagious, AND they lower land values.
