In person sessions (once health and safety permits) occur in one hour sessions from 4:20PM, with our last session ending at 7:40PM
Our High Point center in West Seattle historically has a need for support for tutors open to working with a wonderful community of youth from elementary students to high school students.
YTP welcomes everyone who wants to help and we particularly encourage members of the Black community and other people of color to become tutors.
Help tackle educational inequity by becoming a tutor – no experience necessary! The Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) addresses the disparate outcomes in education for students in communities impacted by poverty, systemic racism, and insufficient opportunity.
We support families and students from low-income housing, people of color, and immigrant communities build confidence and skill in their learning through tutoring. Our volunteering program offers one-to-one tutoring and personalized tutoring plans. Our goal is for students to have a welcoming space, to be supported after school, entirely free of charge.
The program depends on volunteer tutors – could you join our tutoring program and help enrich the education of young people in Seattle?
What you need to know:
– You will receive all the training and resources you need
– Required commitment of one hour per week
– We serve six communities where we have tutoring centers: West Seattle, Lake City, Rainier Beach, First Hill/Yesler Terrace, Rainier Valley, Columbia City!Apply now and help students achieve their potential

Along with the debacle that is Duke’s I’ve seen way too many places that have sub-standard social distancing and/or cleaning measures. I won’t name the place but a local smoothie stop was wearing masks and requiring contactless payment, but never cleaned their outside seating between customers. While waiting for my drink I saw several groups of people use the same tables and chairs. Yuck! Anyway, lets post about the ones that do a good job. I haven’t been to many places yet but I’ll start.
Circa. Their to-go pickup is top notch and I they are doing a single table for inside dining. A+
The Good Society. They have curbside pickup for beer to-go and their staff are really good about cleaning tables after customers leave. Clean styluses for paying on their tablet. Just saw outside tables too. A+
Harry’s Beach House. No inside seating that I’ve seen but their take-out menu is great. No worries there. A+
Grillbird. I know they had to shut down because of a case but I was surprised to hear that because they were always buttoned up when I visited. Hope they recover. B+
Olympia Coffee. They’ve got a plastic guard to protect whoever is at the register, and they leave your coffee for you on the other side through a window. Now they have big jugs of iced coffee drinks you can get to-go too. A+
Beer Junction. Haven’t sat down in there or seen many people doing so, but I appreciate being open for to-go beer. Staff is always masked up. Clearly marked clean and dirty pen jars. A.
Il Corvo. They haven’t opened up for sit-down service but they have a terrific food to-go program that seems like it changes constantly. Their pasta and pasta sauces were terrific and elevated a normally boring dinner at home. A+
That’s all I got. Leaving off places that didn’t do as well. Where have you been that has been exceptional?
Topic: Freshy’s Yard Sale!!
Freshy’s Coffee is having a yard sale!
July 25, 8am-6pm: Come snag a piece of Freshy’s history!
As a locally owned, WS business for over 15 years, Freshy’s is a great place to try a unique, homemade soup, a toasty sandwich, yummy Macrina pastries, or a great cup of Victrola coffee. With a heavy heart and in light of the Covid-19 crisis, we have recently had to permanently close our location downtown, leaving us with an abundance of kitchen gear, kitschy goodies and campy gauche. We could use some West Seattle love and socially distant attention to help get us through this rough patch.
We will have a T-shirt table with Freshy’s swag as well as a drink and sandwich special for the day.
Come by for a satisfying snack or a cool piece of Freshy’s history, or just pass along condolences to Amber for her downtown loss. We hope to see our Freshy’s family (new and old) next Saturday from 8am – 6pm.

Please contact me if you are interested via Care.com or reply here; we will be setting up Zoom interviews for qualified candidates. Thanks!I’d like to air a grievance about the line at the White Center Starbucks. First let me say hats off to the people that work there – they’re doing an awesome job and working so hard to make sure we all have delicious coffee and yummy food. The main problem with the line(s) that form here are there are two (even three, or four depending on how you look at it) ways the line can form. This then takes effort from people, much like the zipper merge, to let people in that may have come in after you, to keep traffic moving and the flow making sense. Today, on Mother’s Day, I pulled in from SW 100th to get off the road, entering the line that had formed through the parking lot. I figured that someone would let me in, just like I would do in that situation. Also much like the Ambaum and SW 148th Starbucks, where people can grasp that design of letting a car in here, a car in there. However, the guy driving the car that would have made sense to let me in front of pulled in AS CLOSE as he could possibly get to the car in front of him to box me out. Maybe this wasn’t the best move, but I did roll down my window and say something to the effect of “hey! that’s kind of rude, this is an entrance too” to which he said a couple of things back to me, none of which I can remember. Then the “Gen Z” guy behind him started shouting at me, pulled the same move to box me out, then rolled down the window and called me a “carrot!” Thinking that was in reference to my red hair, I asked to confirm “what does that mean?” to which he replied with a hand wave as if I would never understand “oh, it’s a Gen Z term, basically stop being a bitch and get in line like everyone else!” I was so stunned that someone called me a bitch first thing in the morning on Mother’s Day, and then the tears started coming! I did call the Starbucks while in line and taddle on the guy, letting them know the red Subaru man was VERY RUDE. The manager was great and asked if I was all right, which I was. I don’t know what I expected from that call, but it made me feel better, much like writing this does as well. So, thanks for reading. And if this is anything, it is a friendly reminder to be nice to each other in this world where everyone is so on edge. (That’s a reminder for me too, as after a few great bear hugs from my husband when I got home, he reminded me that maybe the Starbucks gods were hitting me with some Karma for honking at a guy in line at Starbucks the other day … not my best move, and he’s probably right.)
Please consider helping the Yu family. If you are part of the West Seattle Giving Tree or the West Seattle Moms, you know how generous Annie has been with gifting. Now her family could really use some help making rent and paying bills for the next 4-6 weeks.
We are selling our 2001 Hyundai Santa Fe with 195k miles. We planned on keeping it until as long as possible, but ended up with another car from a friend.
It’s a 2WD GLS with slightly less than 195k miles. Body is great condition, interior in good/fair condition. Burgundy exterior with grey leather interior. Rear hatch hydraulic lifts need repair. Alignment recommended by mechanic on last visit. Timing belt was replaced at 157k, and complete brake system was replaced at 143k (after former mechanic put oil in the brake lines). It’s been a great car–wonderful for camping and getting out of town. We still see a lot of these model years in our West Seattle neighborhood, we purchased from a family member several years ago.
If you are interested, you can reach us at oneyearoftrash@gmail.com. Topic: Best Steak Salad EVER
So I have not been to Circa in a very long time but I was driving by today and they had a sandwich board out front with their evening specials and one of the items was Steak Salad, which suddenly sounded really good. SO I went in and ordered it and it was the BEST Steak Salad I had ever had, the meat was SO tender. YUM YUM
The also had Chocolate Cake on the board but unfortunately they were out and the one they had just made was too warm to frost……. Good reason to go back I’d say. : )Fauntleroy Church United Church of Christ, a progressive congregation in West Seattle, seeks a Building Maintenance and Grounds Custodian.
