I was waiting for Ken to come and tell us what is right and what is wrong. Thank you Ken!

I don’t think it’s alarmist at all, I think that it is something to be aware of and to consider so that there are solid definitions in place.

Why all the negative comments about right wingers? Is everyone that threatened? What gives people? I thought the point of debate was to do just that?

In defense of Admiral’s Pub, a group of us were there celebrating one night and were actually politely and tactfully cut off at one point to “slow us down”. They also made sure our DD was drinking nothing but water and soda. In fact I believe her soda was on the house… We had a wonderful time and there was no hard feelings on either side. We stayed a long time to wind down before we left.

I didn’t see what Dazzlespace saw, but from my understanding resturaunts and bars are typically pretty careful about over serving and letting people go driving due to dram shop insurance. If someone leaves absolutely wasted and gets in an accident, legally speaking the establishment could be sued for their part in the situation. (At least that was the lay of the land when I wrote a paper on it in college a few years ago…)

**Dazzlespace is just on a rampage. I was on another thread where he/she warped it with hostility. Kind of wrecks it for the rest of us.

wes…you misunderstood…it’s not about all christians….just those that hide behind the “banner”…..who LEAD the megachurches and are not who they tell you and me to be….or the politicians who LEAD, by advocating one way, stand up and state beliefs one way (and sometimesinfluence and pass laws), and then break those very personal beliefs themselves. I suppose I hold them to a higher standard and shake my head…these are grown men, with choices..they can’t all stand behind “sickness’…they don’t have some big boogieman standing over them twisting their arms to do these things…they put themselves out there as moral compasses…that old saying “methinks they doth protest too much”…so please don’t misunderstand…this isn’t about the christian, spiritual, religious or non-religious or whatever who just live good lives knowing right from wrong , this is about the guys who LEAD that way, and make those choices…hypocrisy. This guy was a pastor…he knew better…but it isn’t just because he’s a pastor…it’s been ultra-conservative politicians, too. It has nothing to do with his being a “church person” per se..it’s about his position in that church.

I deplore this behavior in anyone..but particularly those who seek to influence by “preaching” the “moral” way.

That definition of sin? That’s your interpretation of God’s laws, 10 commandments, the bible, etc…it may not be everyone’s..just a thought…religion/beliefs etc can be complicated, can’t they? You interpret one way that works for you…your neighbor may interpret another way that works for him/her. Neither is wrong..just different.

I sometimes read the housing wanted boards at Craigslist when I’m bored, and I’ve seen your ad on there, Jiggers. One thing I might suggest to you is that you tell a little about yourself. Honestly, if I had a room to rent (which I don’t) and had seen your ad, I probably wouldn’t have called because I don’t know your first name, whether you’re a man or woman, age range, are you working, etc. With a competitive market for inexpensive rooms/apartments, I’d think somebody needs to tell a prospective roommate or landlord why they are worth picking up the phone to call over somebody else. Also, I have a feeling that at the price point you’re looking for, you aren’t going to find anything unless you open yourself up to the WS neighborhoods that you specifically mention you don’t want to consider. As a renter myself, that’s just my observation of the market right now.

    JenV…that was wonderful…lolol…love Dave Barry

jiggers…how big a place do you get for your $875/mo.?

It’s a shame that you can’t find someone to go halfsies or threesies on renting a house…would cut expenses…but not seem like you’re “renting a room” that you can’t leave for the rest of the place. I understand how difficult it will be going from living alone to living with a stranger…I’ve lived alone since my divorce in 95(except for a few years with my daughter)…and I love it. I’ve made it happen so far…but it hasn’t been easy. I work at home, so would be difficult to share…I see clients here..and don’t see how it would work.

Best of luck..still keeping my eyes open for ya…

To phrase the issue as a Fox commentator would, Are right wingers fools? or just dumb. We will examine that question in depth right after this message from Lockheed- Martin…

Hint: you must click on the links to get the real facts on the netherlands polygamy story and see the wingnut “journalist” who purposely mistranslated the contract name and associated it with same sex marriage.

The cluestick has no preference as to how long someone has posted or lurked here.

Accusations of lawbreaking towards any business need to at least sound credible and may still be met with skepticism or agreement from any who have an opinion.

Smacking around the clueless is what the cluestick is for.

I could pick any business on the right side of the page ad roll and make up stuff that could be neither proved nor disproved. I would expect those who were not convinced by my evidence, or lack of it to comment as their own experience dictated.

I’m still looking for a room to rent here in West Seattle. Its mind boggling how hard it is now to get a place here in WS when just 5 years ago, they were giving you a free month concession just to get you to move in. Call me 206-933-3130. Leave message Thank you.

    I love Husky Deli!

They stock Cadbury biscuits (cookies) that you can normally only get in England/Ireland.

    And they stock Jaffa Cakes.

They are the type of locally owned business we should all embrace if we want to keep the WS feeling alive. Stop in as often as you can and try to buy something.

The bob needs to find a good ophthalmologist; basically, he needs something beyond the normal eye exam/glass prescription. He can no longer see to read and he loves to read (how’s that for a precise diagnosis?)

Any recommendations? We’re going to ask WS Optix for recs as well.

I need my check to use as a deposit for a new place next month because I can’t afford to pay the rent increase which was raised almost 3% two months ago, grrrrr. I’m now paying over $875 a month in rent which isn’t worth it unless you own the place which isn’t in my plans for different reasons. So, the stimulus will surely help my cause. I guess though free money is free money and I shouldn’t complain and be patient. But I don’t want to stay and pay that amount in rent next month. Its ridiculous and I’m willing to adjust my living conditions. It was fun living alone for a number of years, but cutting my rent down to almost half would be so much better for my wallet and mind and maybe god forbid make a few new friends. I don’t know about the rest of you millionaires here.

Now we’re bringing pedophiles in too?? Where have you people been?? Is this entire discussion on the conservative side going to come from every non-original, over-inflated, stereotypical, alarmist, bell-ringer fundie call to action speech EVER made in history?

Check your facts and stop throwing around the same old alarmist sound bites that are used by fundies to scare up money for their campaigns.

This is not about pets, children, people trying to marry their relatives or cults that want six wives and 50 children. This is about me being able to marry my partner (now of 13 years) and be afforded the same health care benefits (which most thinking companies and governments already afford us, thank you) and rights to legal status as any other married couple.

The big argument comes through about the “definition of marriage” and whether that is between a man and a woman or not. Do the original “laws” around marriage have that definition in them? If not, then I would say it is the screaming fundies who are trying to “redefine” marriage.

Honestly, I can file legal documents to secure all of the same legal rights as a hetero married couple and our church sanctioned our marriage way back when so this issue for us is really about not letting the fear mongers have another hold where they blame the lesbian and gay community for one more “downfall of society.”

Thanks to those of you who have kept this about the real issue here and REALLY… I believe if you think about it past all of the people who INSIST on brining in the “slippery slope” argument about dogs, cousins, communes and pedophiles, you will see it has absolutely nothing to do with any of that and all of that is just inflammatory speech meant to scare up the support of uneducated, confused people.

My last professor of religion summed it up nicely when he said it would be nice if there was a thinking man’s church out there. Because the longer you studied the teachings of the the political talk coming from some of the pulpits and governmental lecterns out there, the less you should be able to swallow most of it if you have half a brain.

Yeah, I’m being harsh… I’m just sick of putting up with it. I guess after so many years of dealing with this crap and seeing people killed and worse as a result of the folks who propagate these attitudes, I’m just getting a little pissed off about it.

    Thanks for listening…

Sexual orientation doesnt have anything to do with polygamy.

Sexual orientation has to do with the gender of your same species you find attractive. You are either Homosexual, Hetrosexual, or Bisexual.

Incest also has nothing to do with sexual orientation, and I dont believe is against the law everywhere…its more of a taboo then illegal in most places. (Genetic disorders anyone?)

So again, it is completely about discrimination about sexual orientation, and not about redefining anything. Unless you are trying to redefine sexual orientation, but thats not what the court is saying.

    As for your questions.

    1) I dont know, it has nothing to do with discrimination based on sexual orientation. It does have to do with discrimination of religious beliefs, but most places have laws that handle that specifically. As was said the other day in texas, “religious freedom only goes as far as you are not breaking the law”.

    2) See incest statement above. If 2 brothers or 2 sisters or a brother and sister want to get married, and it is not illegal in their state due to incest laws, go for it, just be prepared if they have offspring to pass along genetically undesirable traits at a greater rate.

    So, again let me state…

SEXUAL ORIENTATION = one’s natural preference in sexual partners; predilection for homosexuality, heterosexuality, or bisexuality.

Not number of partners…or age…but strictly the sex of the person you find attractive. And that is what the ruling was based on. Discrimination based on sexual orientation.

This blog is an addiction for me. I’ve tried to quit but keep coming back. The news for my neighborhood is essential but all the drama stresses me out so much so that I have told myself on more than one occasion over the past 3 years or so that I am never opening this blog again. There does appear to be an in crowd no matter how long you have been posting. I guess I am one of the originals but don’t feel welcome here. By the way there is still a toilet or terlit on the corner of Charlestown and 41st :)

House, the article you link to has the author joking about wishing he could claim his pet as a dependent. I wish that too. So. The case being written about is whether a disabled person can claim their service dog as a medical *deduction*. Seems reasonable if we can deduct our eyeglasses under medical.

I fail to see the *slippery slope* between gay marriage equality and income tax deductions. Of course now that we’ve muddied the original issue with pets, dependents, children, deductions, and polygamy, Wes has to steer us toward pedophilia.

Why can’t someone just explain to me how two committed, consensual, adult, same sex partners affects their straight marriage. And please refrain from quoting leviticus. That is a belief system, not a legal argument.

Dave Barry on the Economic Stimulus Payment

“This year, taxpayers will receive an Economic Stimulus Payment. This is a very exciting new program that I will explain using the Q and A format:

“Q. What is an Economic Stimulus Payment?

“A. It is money that the federal government will send to taxpayers.

“Q. Where will the government get this money?

    “A. From taxpayers.

“Q. So the government is giving me back my own money?

    “A. Only a smidgen.

“Q. What is the purpose of this payment?

“A. The plan is that you will use the money to purchase a high-definition TV set, thus stimulating the economy.

“Q. But isn’t that stimulating the economy of China?

    “A. Shut up.”

I work near Specialty’s downtown, and the smell that comes out of there is just evil – making me go in like that. LOL!

A lawsuit against Hershey’s for making the town smell like chocolate is ridiculous. You don’t move to (or visit) Hershey if the smell bothers you. My grandparents lived near there so we went often as kids; the stench of chocolate is really overwhelming, but I’d never sue them to change it!

Back in New Jersey I used to drive pass a Nabisco factory nearly every day, and if the wind was just right you’d smell the baked goods from there. That was always fun to try and guess what you were smelling. :)

FYI, I know a lot of people who’ve tried the “where’s my rebate” query on irs.gov, and it seems to usually not work unless you check the status during the week it’s supposed to be issued. I was due to have it direct deposited the week of May 5 per the schedule, and as of May 2 it still said it couldn’t find my info. On May 5 it said it would be direct deposited on May 9, which it was.

I believe that Holland since legalizing same sex marriage, has also legalized polygamy there after and now a pedophile political group has just started up there to lower the age for consent to 12 instead of 16. Most of those in this group seem to be same sex orientated as well.

I think House brings up a good point which we should all be aware of and that is the possibility of a slippery slope of what defines marriage.

This is the only point I have brought up, so please do not read into this more than what I have stated.

    Dazzelspace-

I wrote the near rants in response to people saying their pets are service dogs in order to gain access for them to public places. BUT…I am another exception to the idea of pet owners not understanding why people might object to their pets being allowed everywhere. I would love to see a change in laws about that, so that people could bring well-mannered dogs into certain types of establishments (not all). I understand people with phobias, people with allergies, religious beliefs about the role of dogs, and people who just plain don’t like dogs. I am really understanding of the value of the relationships we have with our pets, but I think you are mistaken in your assumption that all of us are fanatics who are so self-indulgent that we cannot comprehend the perspectives of others. My dog can legally go anywhere, but I always scan for signs of people moving away from him and then try to make sure I don’t come close to them. On airplanes the first thing I do is check with my seatmates to confirm they don’t have allergies, fears, or just plain dislikes as it would be completely reasonable in my mind for them to ask to be re-seated and I would take no offense. There is a restaurant of a certain religious persuasion that I would love to visit but don’t because that religion views dogs as undesirable and most of their employees and customers are of that religion. So even though I feel really strongly about my legal right to take my dog everywhere and anywhere, I do understand that some people are not comfortable with that and try to be sensitive to it when it doesn’t interfere with my needs. Heck, I go to the Farmer’s Market sometimes and my husband and I take turns sitting along the sidewalk and holding my dog (and his service dog also) rather than taking them into the market even though we have every right to do so. So if a person who has every right to take a dog everywhere can be understanding of the feelings of others, I think it is a gross mis-statement to say that others with pets do not have the same understanding. Not all of them do, but I know lots who do.

I think polygamy is illegal because some believe significant psychological harm comes from it. Marrying relatives is illegal I think because of the increased risk of creating children with significant genetic defects.

It would be interesting to read the science on polygamy itself; I couldn’t find anything that was divorced from the nutty religion and forced marriages. And how come it’s usually multiple wives and not multiple husbands?

I have days where I wonder why anybody would want one spouse, let alone several, though.
