Trivia point, the people behind smalltownpapers.com are based here in West Seattle, south of The Junction!

Speaking of old papers, we were just going through some shelves here in the utility room near WSB Nerve Central Desk-By-The-Washer-Dryer, trying to clear space for business-related stuff now that we’re working from home, and I found my stack of newspapers from the Kurt Cobain death and aftermath. Haven’t saved that many clippings about any one news event before or since.

flipjack…hope you find a home for them…craigslist? If you are giving away things…freecycleseattle…I love that place. Also, I wonder if any of the local rags would be interested in vintage papers from the 30’s etc?

miws…I’ll explain this as it was explained to me…”okay, try this link– http://www.smalltownpapers.com.

If you click on the first WSH (West Seattle Herald) link, it takes you to the current newspaper site. You do not want that one.!!!

Click on the special collections archive button at the top of the home page instead.

    Click browse archives button

    Click state search-washington

(the archives (old papers) are the ones on the left hand side.)

When you click on the left hand side West Seattle Herald, you will get your choice of a limited amount of years.

The problem with this site is that you will find many newspapers that you will want to read,in many states. And your whole day will be gone.”

Make sense? Thank fellow commenter Gina for the link.

Hope that works for you :)

    Hey everyone,

I am EMT in the local Seattle/King County area so I thought I might be able to help you all out since I spend a lot of time at the local hospitals.

Highline- 16251 Sylvester Rd S- This is the main campus and the ER entrance is located just south of SW 160th St on 8th Ave SW. This is their main ER, the ER at 128th and Military Rd (Riverton Campus) is more of an urgent care. If you go to the Riverton Campus and your symptoms are more severe than they can handle, you are in active labor, or they need to admit you. They will trasfer you to the main campus by ambulance, which is aprox an $800 ride.

Harborview Medical Center- 325 9th Ave- Harborview is the only Level I adult and pediatric trauma center and regional burn center serving Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho. They are ALWAYS busy and always packed. Harborview’s Centers of Emphasis for neurosciences, trauma, burns, reconstruction and rehabilitation, mentally ill and medically vulnerable, and AIDS/STD treatment provide leading edge teaching, research, and clinical care for all patients. They are also the only county hospital. Harborview gets the majority of the Airlifts from outside of seattle due to their level 1 rating. One of two major teaching hospitals for UW Medicine

Swedish First Hill-747 Broadway- The ER here is located on the West side of the building. They are fairly busy on a regular basis. They don’t really handle major Trauma.

This is what else is located at first hill:

    Swedish Cancer Institute

    Swedish Orthopedic Institute

    Emergency Room

    Emergency Room for Children

    Eye Center

    Health Education Classes

    Joslin Diabetes Center

    Medical Imaging Services

    Pediatric Specialties

    Primary Care

    Surgical Services

    Women’s Health & Childbirth Services

Swedish Cherry Hill-500-17th Avenue- The ER is located on the west side of the building.

This is whats offered at Cherry Hill:

The Swedish Heart and Vascular Institute

    The Swedish Neuroscience Institute

    Behavioral Health

    Breast Center

    Emergency Room

    Executive Health Center

    Orthopedics

    Primary Care

    Surgical Services

    Rehabilitation

    Wound Healing Center

Virgina Mason Medical Center- 1100 9th ave- The ERis located on the south side of the building. This ER is on the smaller side, but they are building a new one in the next few years.

UW Medical center-1959 NE Pacific -Among the top dozen medical centers in the United States as rated by U.S. News & World Report 2007 “America’s Best Hospitals. One of two major teaching hospitals for UW Medicine. This is quite a ways from West Seattle espically during rush hour.

Childrens Hospital-4800 Sand Point Way NE- Pretty much self explanitory. Most kids with trauma type injurys will go to Harborview if transported by ambulance or medics.

Valley Medical-400 South 43rd Street- South King county trauma center. Valley is a level III trauma center. They handle anything. This is a ways from West Seattle as well.

All the other hospitals in King County are a fair distance from West Seattle. The exception of is West Seattle Psychiatric Hospital @ 2600 SW Holden St. West Seattle Psych has the capacity to serve individuals who voluntarily seek psychiatric inpatient services. Case management, counseling, crisis stabilization services, group services, vocational services, domestic violence treatment, expanding community services program and child/adolescent psychiatry are other main services provided by the hospital.

    I hope this information helps.

    Hi Bonnie,

Thanks for your input! It is ironic as our daughter was in kindergarten at Arbor Heights and we moved her to Roxhill. You are right about seeing the parents more at Arbor Heights, more parent involvement at that school that is for sure! But moving to Roxhill aside from this problem has been very positive for our daughter and family. I was told by the office staff at Roxhill that more of the parents work during the day than at Arbor Heights, I do remember a high number of stay-at-home-Moms at Arbor Heights.

I am hopeful that my suggest to the principal at Roxhill will not go unanswered, as she has so far been a very good listener.

When our daughter was in 1st grade earlier this year I talked with the only one other parent on a daily basis and most of those kids took the school bus. Now our daughter is in 2nd grade and the situation of the kids being on the bus is the same.

Girl Scouts here we come!!! :)

I do not know anything about the history of the SBC , never claimed to. But despite that how could anyone, except by war and force impose a theocracy in our country. No way would this slide by our congress or judicial system. That’s a bit out there.

I simply wanted to know why they specifically make the claims they do. Thank you for your input and information.

I also could not get the pages to load on the online book.

    Just for fun.

If anyone wants to really really discuss why Ron Paul is almost as dangerous a loon as Huckabee, then this seems to be the place, but do your own research first. There is plenty of time before the next primary where they go head to head for the 15th century vote. (South Carolina)

Thanks to all. I am really in a dilemma; half the Direct TV/Dish Subscribers really like it, no problem. beachdrivegirl had some really negative experiences with Direct TV, and Comcast has a spotty rep, some good, some bad, but generally higher prices.

Now Ken tells me that I will lose my local Weather Channel station input if I upgrade to satellite…This is the one thing that may keep me from switching–As a weather foamer (being rabid about it, that is) I switch between whatever station I am watching and the weather channel for a local radar/forecast shot when a commercial hits . While it seems obvious that I would miss this with satellite, I’d overlooked it.

I may just remain with Comcast for awhile, get a few upgrades from my current package, and see how this whole HD thing sorts itself out. However, for those doubting the move to HD: Do it, it is truly amazing what the quality difference is. My old TV was a stunner in it’s time, but 14 years later is nearly Jurassic Park for TVs.

    Thanks all – JayDee

I’d be interested in hearing more about All Star Fitness. I belong to 24 Hour Fitness and am considering a switch. I currently pay about $21/month at 24HF and was quoted $50/month by ASF. There are way more options at ASF, which makes the extra $$ almost worth it – pool, women’s only workout area, climbing wall, etc. The 24HF facility is small, and at peak times (5 PM – 7 PM) is VERY crowded – members are asked to limit their time on the cardio equipment to 20 minutes when it’s busy. I’m sorry – but if I am going through the effort to get to the gym, I want to work out for how long I want to work out and 20 minutes just isn’t worth it!

Some other things I am not satisfied with are the temperature – it’s very warm at 24HF. Often I am sweaty before I even get on a machine! They also don’t seem to have any cell phone policy, and I have had to listen to someone’s lengthy conversation about what they did last night a few too many times. With the demand on equipment, you can’t really just pick up and move to another machine, so you are held hostage listening to the phone call.

So any input on ASF and whether making the switch is worth it would be appreciated!

Oh…SC, get that looked at soon – speaking from experience. We have the same underground system (concrete ‘pipes’) and unbeknownst to us, one had failed. We didn’t know until the ground had been wet for so long it finally found a very small hole in the foundation. One day during a downpour water started coming in the house. Wrecked carpet, drywall, everything. One has no way of knowing what’s going on with those drains unless they’re dug up. We ended up replacing them all as a preventative measure. Can’t recommend the company we used, as we had to have them come out twice to make corrections, but gutter companies are a good place to start. Good luck and I hope it is just in the downspout!

We hired Paul Lewan at Stalwart Plumbing, (206) 713-0474, on the recommendation of some friends. I’m so glad we did! This guy is smart, efficient, straightforward, reasonably priced, and very good at what he does. He’s also an incredibly nice guy. We started off with a basement job and ended us having him repipe our whole house. I can’t recommend him enough. (Oh, and he has Carl Kassel from “Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me” on his answering machine. If, like Paul and me, you are an NPR geek, you must call him.)
