Young Female Chihuahua needs foster home/permanent home ASAP!

On Sunday, one of the neighborhood kids who play with our dogs showed up at our doorstep with a young female chihuahua that a neighbor 2 blocks away had just given up to the kids, stating she couldn’t take care of the dog. I confirmed with the woman that she in fact gave the dog away because she is dying of cancer, etc… and I did politely counsel her about giving dogs away on the street to kids.

In the meantime, the kids can’t keep a pet in their apartment (they knew that when they took the dog) but thought that we would “keep” the dog for them so they could come by and play every day with it. I rescue dogs, but we have 3 plus 1 cat and 1 bird, so it’s not possible for us to have her in the house (my dogs are not very friendly)

The dog was obviously freaked out by little kids and we quickly took the dog from the kids (gave them a lecture about taking dogs from strangers) and took her into the house where we found her covered in fleas. Gave her a bath, trimmed her nails, and checked her over. She appears to be in good health, young and unaltered. The woman also confirmed she has not had any shots because she couldn’t afford it.

In any event, I contacted a poster who has lost their chihuahua and asked this individual to foster the dog for a few days until we can find another place for her. The lady, Joyce (see “Taz” under the lost pets section)has been more than gracious as a foster parent these last couple of days, but not only is she hoping to recover her own dog before she returns to Arkansas, but says that she also cannot afford on her limited income to spay her and get her shots before taking her on a plane. She confirms that the dog is sweet and trained.

I hate to uproot this little dog again, but we can’t take her in our house and Joyce will need to leave soon and won’t be able to adopt her. She has offered to foster another couple of days, but I’m hoping someone on this blog needs a new companion or knows someone who can foster this sweet little dog until a new home can be found. I’m not a rescue placement person, so my only remedy in a few days if no one comes forward is to take the dog to a rescue group or no-kill shelter. I REALLY hate to do that!

my husband may not appreciate me offering us up like this, but I would be willing to foster the chihuahua for a time if need be. They are truly great and funloving dogs. We have an altered 3 year old boy chihuahua already, as well as a 2 year old shephard mix and a 8 year old siberian husky, who all get along famously…another one added to the bunch wouldnt be that big of strain at this point. Thanks Andrea – I will keep you up to date on the happenings. I wish we could take her – we have 3 small dogs – but my 2 oldest are 14 & 15 y/o and are just not tolerant anymore of rescues/strays in the house, so it’s not fair to keep her here.

As a dog rescuer, I know how stressful this is for the dog – hell, the only person she’s known just basically throws her out to strange kids, who then bring her to me, and then I have to bring her to someone else. She must be frightened and confused – I’m hoping someone will come forward and offer her a permanent home so she doesn’t have to move again.

But like you said, if need be at least she has another temporary place to go when Joyce leaves if we can’t find her a home. I thing the dog (her name is Chiquita) is dog friendly – but always hard to tell when they’re in a strange environment with strange dogs under stressful circumstances.

I thought about that also, but I’m not in a position to front those costs at this time. (most rescuers take care of those things before they adopt the dog out for a fee = vet bills)

This is one of those rare occasions that we haven’t been able to foster, so I feel really bad for the dog, as she seems very sweet and we like small dogs. But I have to think about my own rescues first at this point, especially since one is deaf, one is going blind and the other stays out of the way of those two. Plus the cat and the bird – it’s a real zoo here already!

I have several cats and 2 big dogs who are very friendly. I already know of 2 people who want to adopt her. ALL OF MY RESCUES ARE S/N BEFORE ADOPTIONS. I am able to vaccinate my own rescues.

what are her colors? I want to give these people a heads up. I was able to forward the blog and they were able to see a bit of her history.

She is white with big black/choc. brown spots – very cute and thin. Average size for a chihuahua.

We can call Joyce tomorrow and go down and look at her. Do you have a time that works for you Pamela?

I was also told that both parents of Chiquita are AKC registered, but for some reason Chiquita is not. The original owner may be able to give me more info so she can be registered by a new owner.

I can strongly recommend Pamela. She’s conscientious about placement and caring about animals. (Noam Katsky came from her rescued kitty brigade.) I think that’s a better idea than relocating the puppy to a new area of the country–she’s had enough trauma in Seattle. :-)

I am in appointments till 1 pm up by admiral safeway. So I can do something then. Try and call before 10:30 am. I don’t care about AKC crap. Don’t get me started on that stuff. I CAN and WILL find her an appropiate home. I require the new owner to own a home/condo. References and DOG OBEDIENCE classes within 2 weeks of adoptions.

Ok – looks like lots of options. I will call Joyce in the morning and see if we can arrange a time and place on Alki for a get together so everyone can talk and evaluate what will be best for her. I’ll give everyone a call with the arrangements.

Just wanted to give an update: Pamela has graciously arranged for Chiquita to receive her vaccinations and then be taken to the vet’s office tomorrow to be spayed. She estimates the costs at between $65 & $100.

There have been many of you here and on another yahoo group site who have expressed interest in helping in some way – either by fostering/adopting or financial support. Thank you for your willingness to help.

Joyce, who is still desperately searching for her chihuahua “Taz” lost several days ago, has continued to foster her. As I explained in my OP, Joyce is visiting from Arkansas and staying with her daughter on Alki. Joyce recently lost her husband of many years in April and now has lost her closest companion, Taz, so this has been a very difficult time for her. She says that Chiquita has been a source of comfort for her these last few days and she is still considering whether to keep her and take her back to Arkansas. However, she has a limited income and cannot afford to reimburse Pamela for the vet expenses (she already has a carrier and plane ticket for the dog – she had it for Taz, whom she has lost).

I’ve asked Joyce to give the issue some serious thought while Chiquita is away at the vet’s office and see if this is really what she wants, even if Taz is found. If so, I told her that there would be a way for us to help her reimburse Pamela so she wouldn’t have to worry.

In any event, I know that if Joyce wants to keep her, then I think maybe some of us could come up with enough to reimburse Pamela. Seems like Joyce and Chiquita have had enough trauma in their lives lately and maybe the kindness of a few strangers is just what the higher power intended in all of this.

I’ll give everyone an update on Friday once the medical procedures are finished and Joyce has had some time to make a decision.
