In reply to: RANT – Bicyclists on Alki
AnonymousInactiveJust one example of the many times a driver who is on the road and minding their own business when a ped. or cyclist darts out and is in the wrong then flips off the driver. Yeah, it really makes me want to share the road. One can only take so much and we are not getting any smaller in population around here. There is going to be an “incident” one of these days, I can smell it.

SAMemberI’m not going to defend the bicyclist…
A cycling friend recently bought a Prius and I asked her, “why’d you do that?” The Prius is so quiet you can’t hear it coming up behind you. She knew of the problem and was going to get the special “Share the Road” license plate to offset her guilty conscience and let other cyclists know she was bike friendly.
August 5, 2008 at 7:04 pm #587694Topic: RANT – Bicyclists on Alki
in forum West Seattle Rants & RavesRonMParticipantI was driving with my wife westbound on Alki yesterday, enjoying the weather and scenery as we do occasionally. When an adult bicyclist (in his 40’s) darted out onto the street from between two parked cars. We were doing less than 25 mph, but I slammed on the brakes and tooted the horn to let him know I was there. He wasn’t looking when he entered the road and I missed him by about a foot! He glared back at me and flashed us the bird, then proceeded to keep himself planted in the center of the road at about 5-10 mph.
The reminder of the motorist who had his car smashed and was beaten up by a herd of bicyclists a couple of days ago came to mind.
There was opposing traffic so that we couldn’t pass. He continued to flash the bird for a couple of blocks until we reached the stop sign at the Cactus. He barged through the intersection without stopping and we stopped and made the left turn.
I understand the desire to reduce our carbon footprint and if it were practical I’d be bicycling too. I may be 72, from a different generation, but I am driving a Prius averaging 47 mpg for crying out loud, so feel that I am doing my part. What is it about the arrogance of these tree huggers that they think they can abuse all others? If I had been someone else, he might have learned the physics of the difference between a 200 lb vehicle vs. 3,000 the hard way!

BayouMemberJulie, there is a place on 13th Ave SW, near the Steve Cox memorial park (White Center) that constantly has pallets out back with a “free wood” sign. I don’t remember what the business is but I’ll check it out next time I drive by.

ZenguyParticipantAnything bigger than a half man (about 100lbs) rock should probably be moved by machinery. I did a rockery with half man rocks and they were plenty hard to move and I am a pretty big guy. I would call a place like Burien Sand and Gravel as a start.

AnonymousInactiveFor those of you that do not know, Safeway changed their gas discount program recently, now one can get a larger discount. I think it’s for every $100 purchase, you get 10 cents off and those discounts accumulate. They expire at the end of Sept though.
No wonder the lines have been longer at the Admiral Safeway gas station. I don’t go there often though. Remember, the entry is one way. Rant to the guy in the white porche who glared at me for exiting the right way while he came in the wrong way. That porche must be compensating for 2 things. :) Happy Day all.

The businesses I’ve asked all return theirs, so don’t have any available. I’ve checked Craigslist and Freecycle, and there are some, but not in WS. I thought I’d see if anyone could point me to a close-by source, first.
Thanks!

WSBKeymasterI suspect BDG’s post “crazy man does post those pics” might be missing a word somewhere but just to be clear in case it’s not … we (your WSB editorial team) photographed the truck after first hearing about it from WSB’ers (we were going the opposite way on Alki and Patrick braved the post-dusk traffic to sprint across the street, all in a day’s work, er, night’s work), and I uploaded the pix to our server in response to the question last night about photos (note the URL, which goes straight to our upload files) … I don’t know that pix of the truck have been posted anywhere online by its owner, although I’m still trying to figure out if what’s written across the top of the side of the truck ending in “.com” is really a bonafide URL or not.

KenParticipantCurrent propaganda efforts that remind you of the insanity detailed in “the hunting of a president”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunting_of_the_President
ie: the “Clinton Body Count” insanity.
Republican will claim these are from the fringes and yet… we can be sure some of our neighbors believe them with the same fervor they believed the previous decades demonization.
When the entire party is taken over by the fringes, it’s time to get out if you are brave enough to use your own brain.

Her is an excerpt from the current crazies email
GANDY BAUGH – Attorney for Obama friend Antonin Rezko died by falling out an eightieth story window of the Hancock Tower, January, 2003. His client was a convicted Chinese spy.
and one from the Clinton Body Count:
Gandy Baugh jumped out of a window of a multi-story building and died on January 8, 1994. Published reports say he was defending a man named Dan Lassater in a financial misconduct case. Lassater was an associate of Bill Clinton’s who was convicted of cocaine distribution.
And snopes sez:
http://www.snopes.com/politics/clintons/bodycount.asp
Gandy Baugh died on 8 January 1994 at home. Although causes weren’t specified, it’s safe to assume people who jump out of tall buildings either die on the spot or in the hospital, not at home.
Also note the snopes link explains the stupidity step by step of the original CBC email smear.
From Snopes:
This Clinton “body count” list is not a new phenomenon multiple versions have been circulating for years. New victim names are routinely added and old ones taken off, forming an endless variety of permutations. At this point, there is no one “official” list.
But where did all this craziness start? In 1994, in a letter to congressional leaders, former Rep. William Dannemeyer listed 24 people with some connection to Clinton who had died “under other than natural circumstances” and called for hearings on the matter.
Dannemeyer’s list of “suspicious deaths” was largely taken from one compiled by Linda Thompson, an Indianapolis lawyer who in 1993 quit her year-old general practice to run her American Justice Federation, a for-profit group that promotes pro-gun causes and various conspiracy theories through a shortwave radio program, a computer bulletin board, and sales of its newsletter and videos.

FranciParticipantI frequently return to WS that way, and I would say that there are a bunch of drivers who just simply think they should not have to get line and wait like the rest of us a the light. I’m convinced I’ve seen the same cars doing the same thing on multiple days. I’ve even had drivers cut me off in the middle of the intersection, after going through the light, while making the left turn. One even cut in front of me in the intersection, slammed on his brakes, and pulled into the Chelan. Or simply ‘merge’ where the road divides – without any thought at all for the folks who are in the correct lane.
I suspect that some think that most traffic is going straight that is in the far right lane, but I would say that 99% of the traffic takes the left turn.
They are probably the same ones who wait till the last minute to get over into the right lane on 99 to take the WS Bridge exit. I suspect that if everyone moved into the right lane early enough, it would still be slow, but you would not get the sudden stops and starts that you do now during heavy traffic.

BobLoblawParticipantAll for being nice as well. However, in this case, there’s a chance that somebody who has been let in enough times will assume they have the right of way, and when somebody goes straight — wham!
.
Same thing with letting folks cross in cross walks when the light is red for them: Just because you’re nice doesn’t mean somebody isn’t going to see that there’s a green light and pull around you, only to hit the walker. Hence the reason lights are what they are.

August 5, 2008 at 1:50 pm #633238cjboffoliParticipantI had a good experience at Spring Hill when I ate there with some discerning foodie friends a month after the place opened. The food and service for us were good. And I say this knowing the raves that mediocre Seattle restaurants often garner. Whereas I wouldn’t exactly nominate the place for a Michelin star I would definitely go there again.
That night we met one of the owners, Marjorie, who was friendly, professional and very kind. I would think that criticisms directed to her would be responded to and remedied.

SueParticipantI know it’s 90 days notice (or letting you finish out your lease) for a condo conversion (which is what happened to me), but I’m not sure about a teardown – although from what was posted above, it looks like it applies. Definitely look into that. The fact that they want to now consider a “financial incentive” to get you to move sooner when you questioned it suggests to me that they may have been caught doing something they shouldn’t have (only 30 days notice).
You know, I totally respect that landlords have the right to sell the homes we rent out for conversions, tear-downs, whatever. But what disturbs me is this recurring trend to skirt the law while doing it, forcing people out with inadequate notice, hoping we don’t know our rights and/or won’t fight for them, etc. Is it too much to ask for landlords/rental agents to work with integrity?
August 5, 2008 at 8:06 am #633088In reply to: Help – Rental needed by Aug 31st
WSBKeymasterOh PS, if you haven’t found this already, it’s the one with the 90 days, from the DPD website:
>>. Tenant Relocation Assistance Ordinance
This ordinance applies when tenants are displaced
by housing demolition, change of use, substantial
rehabilitation, or by removal of use restrictions from
subsidized housing. A property owner who plans
development activity must obtain a tenant relocation li-
cense and a building or use permit before terminating
a tenancy. All tenants must receive a 90-day notice of
the activity that will require them to move. Eligible low
income tenants, whose income cannot exceed 50% of
median income, receive cash relocation assistance.
Call DPD at (206) 684-7899 for more information.<<

The aforementioned “tenant relocation license” should show on the complaints/permits link I included in the previous post, if one has been obtained.

WSBKeymasterBelatedly reading this thread – I’ve seen this story all too many times in just our past year and a half or so of tracking development. There was a sad little lesson in this somewhat similar story from June of last year:
https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=1832
There are so many teardowns-to-townhomes still in progress, I can’t guess which is yours by reading this, but if you wouldn’t mind me looking it up to put on our watch list, please e-mail me at
Meantime, anyone contemplating any kind of move anywhere at any time would be strongly urged to read absolutely every shred of available background on the property, whether you are selling or renting. Sounds like that might have prevented this situation – permits are often applied for long before those yellow signs go up. To check any address in Seattle, for permits/complaints present or past,
http://web1.seattle.gov/DPD/permitstatus/
To check the property ownership history, use the King County Parcel Viewer
http://www.metrokc.gov/gis/mapportal/Pviewer_main.htm
If you’re thinking about renting an apartment complex, always worth checking to make sure it’s not up for sale. Not all commercial/multifamily properties get publicly listed, I’ve learned, but I keep an eye on this site and report WS complexes up for sale – ones with more than a few units, anyway – when they are posted, because of having heard so many times about tenants being the last to know (in this search engine, choose multifamily in the top group and West Seattle in market area):
http://www.commercialmls.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=property.searchFS
meantime … good luck finding a new residence fast!

melissaParticipantThis is a case where there are almost equal numbers coming from both directions. While I, on the Avalon side, do have the right of way, I figure this is a case where it’s easy to drive nice. I let someone in each time. They, after all, need to get to work too and if the Harbor Ave folks had to wait until they had a clear spot, they’d never get off Harbor Ave. All of which is to say that I think it’s a light problem (there should be a green arrow for those turning from that direction) rather than a lousy driver problem.
