WSBKeymasterRe: Prost, the owner and I have been swapping e-mails and should have a time booked soon to do a formal update. I was hoping for this week but it appears he got busy. Also still on Bohemian watch next door. They were planning to offer a full bar, at last report.

datamuseParticipantI love the Nine Pound Hammer in Georgetown, but it got discovered earlier this summer and every time I try to go there now it’s packed. I’m glad they’re doing well, but it’s gotten a little tougher to just go there for a beer.
Jules Mae Saloon up the street is good, too.

JimmyGMemberIf you want down and dirty in WS then go to the Tug Tavern just off Delridge.
Be prepared though.
And do none of you stop in at Poggie’s? Now that it’s smoke free it’s not bad.
August 16, 2008 at 7:04 pm #634284
JimmyGMemberCruiser–do you know of any place in the area that pours a Guinness correctly?
And don’t you dare say Fado!!
Owl & Thistle is hit or miss.

WSBKeymasterthey put the website up (bohemian) a looooooong time ago, kudos to them for that, like cafe revo, get your info out sooner rather than later. hard to get a hold of folks in the last throes of getting ready to open but we’ve been trying.
August 16, 2008 at 8:46 pm #634286
JanSParticipantand here I’ve just been following on their MySpace page….
August 16, 2008 at 9:52 pm #634287
JenVMemberwe just stopped in at Jules Maes for a cold one after the BF took a flight lesson- and they are cold ones. Good, cold beer on a hot hot day. Yum.
August 17, 2008 at 7:07 am #634288
FullTiltParticipantOMG Todd!!! I love the Zeitgeist too! Every time I am in the Bay I end up there by some fate. The woman selling the tamales upped her prices a slight bit bit they were still freaking awesome.
Loretta’s is absolutely on the top of the list, and the Triangle gets better all the time, and the Tin Room in Burien has the best cocktails. They squeeze the fruit right there any don;t use any mixers. The margaritas are dangerous-like cold lemonade on a hot hot day, but with a swift kick. Mmmm….I want one now!
August 17, 2008 at 8:43 am #634289
mellaw6565MemberTriangle was packed last night about midnite when I drove by – glad to see things going well. I thought it might be overflow from the Cafe Rozella concert.
Want to know what’s a real “bummer” – I’m allergic to beer (hops). That’s why I’m limited to the hard stuff if I want a drink – I’ll have to check out the Tin Room.
August 17, 2008 at 6:38 pm #634290
datamuseParticipantYeah, mellaw6565–one of my best friends can’t have wheat, so no beer for him. I will have to mention the Tin Room to him, if he doesn’t know about it already.

cruiserMemberJimbo,
After exhaustive research since I came Seattle here there is not one decent pint of Guinness to be had here. The best I’ve had in the states is JD’s bar in Manhattan,NY. However I get by with canned Guinness which is brewed in Dublin and a special pouring technique with I have developed in conjunction with NASA:)
August 17, 2008 at 11:11 pm #634292
ToddinWestwoodMemberI forgot Hooverville Bar down in SoDo. There is no televisions! ( a good thing ) and they can pour a pretty decent Guiness.
August 18, 2008 at 1:59 am #634293
JimmyGMemberCruiser,
I’ve tried the canned Vitamin G and didn’t like it at all. Apparently because I don’t have an in with the rocket scientists.
My first ever Guinness was in Ireland in ’03 and I think it spoiled me for life. I WILL return there. And this time I won’t waste any time site seeing, but instead camp permanently at one of the locals in County Donegal.
I mean really, how many castles or ring forts do you need to see?

BayouMemberRS, I haven’t made it over to Big Al’s yet but plan on it very soon. I’ve been sick so it’s not been a good week to try new beers.
I’m surprised that Brouwer’s (Fremont) hasn’t been mentioned in a thread all about beer. I admit that I have a severe weakness for Belgian brews but how can you not love a place with 60 taps and close to 500 bottles! Their mussels & frites don’t hurt my feelings either.
August 18, 2008 at 11:00 pm #634296
ZenguyParticipantIt is rather small, but Sun Liquor (Summit Ave on Capitol Hill) makes the best drinks with fresh squeezed juice in every drink. Sun was opened by the Top Pot Donut Boys and it has a great forties asian feel to it.

beachdrivegirlParticipantWow! Saw this over the weekend from my phone while out of town…just took the time to read them !! I am excited for all the new places to try. My favorite W.Seattle place is Rocksport, after work for happy hour is Goldies on Airport Way, but my absolute favorite is in Pullman where i could get a beer for $1 or a wells drink for $2….those were the days. :)
August 22, 2008 at 7:37 pm #634298
villagegreenMemberThanks for all the feedback everyone! People definitely have different priorities/preferences when choosing a favorite bar/cocktail lounge.
Since I didn’t mention my vision of an ideal bar in the OP, I’ll give it a go here:
1. Dark – If I walk into a bar and my eyes have to adjust to accommodate florescent lighting I know it’s not for me. For some reason in Seattle a ‘well lit bar’ seems to be a plus for people.
2. Attractive Lighting – This goes along with number 1 (obviously), but in addition to being dark a bar has to have attractive lighting. A prime example of a bar that breaks the first two rules is the Poggie. Turn off the fluorescents add some red lighting and magically everyone looks attractive. Well maybe not everyone, but some of us need all the help we can get.
3. Knowledgeable and efficient bartenders – If the bartender stares at me blankly when I order a Gin Gimlet (I swear that happened to me once here in Seattle) it’s time to leave. I don’t know the guy’s name, but the bartender at the Maharaja has remembered my drink from a previous visit without even having to ask. Definitely a pro.
4. Strong drinks for a reasonable price – It really shouldn’t be that difficult to pour a strong drink without gouging the customer. Oh how I miss the New Luck Toy.
5. Booths – Old school vinyl booths are the best for settling into a long night of drinks.
6. Sense of mystery and possibility (maybe even a little fear) – Venturing into a seemingly slightly seedy bar is more appealing to me than drinking in what could be confused for Starbucks’ first venture into alcohol. Hale’s Brewery anyone?
Don’t get me wrong, I like a nice neighborhood pub or creative theme bar every once in a while (the old BPP, Sun Liquor, Jules Maes), but I’ve always been in search of the perfect dive bar I guess. From my experience, L.A., San Francisco, and Portland seem to do these types of places much better than Seattle.
Here’s a short list of places in Seattle that fit the bill for me:
1. The Baranof Lounge (Greenwood)
2. The Maharaja (WS)
3. Hattie’s Hat (Ballard)
4. Nite Lite (Downtown) – if they’d turn the lights down.
5. Loretta’s (South Park)
6. Twilight Exit (CD/Cap Hill)
7. Skylark here is WS would be a whole lot better if they turned their lights way down (come on, it’s a rock club – it should be dark).
Anyone else know of a place I should try? Thanks!
p.s. I’m really not an alcoholic even though I may sound like it. I just like to romanticize drinking! Damn you Charles Bukowski!
August 22, 2008 at 7:49 pm #634299
charlabobParticipantAh, yes – Buk; an inspiration to us all. And Robert Parker. (Does anyone romanticize women who drink?)
I have a shorter test. Do they know (1) what a sidecar is and (B) that they require sugared rims. You’d be surprised … no you wouldn’t.
:-)
August 22, 2008 at 7:59 pm #634300
barbMemberPurple Cafe makes a sidecar, and I recall it having a sugared rim
August 22, 2008 at 8:11 pm #634301
RSMemberWah! now I miss Bukowski’s bar! Look it up if you’re ever in Boston!
August 22, 2008 at 8:11 pm #634302
villagegreenMemberThe Sidecar is one drink that’s always been poured correctly for me in Seattle (sugared rim and all) – even in dive bars. Strange.
August 22, 2008 at 11:42 pm #634303
JenVMembervillagegreen, I am sure we’ll see you at the Maha this evening? Now if only we knew who each other was…it’s our regular Friday haunt – and has been for me since I was a wee babe of 21. Bogie is without a doubt the best bartender in Seattle.
August 23, 2008 at 12:27 am #634304
beachdrivegirlParticipantProbably stupid question(s) but first sounds like Maha is a dive bar which I love, is that accurate? and second where is it?
