In reply to: Rules for street parking??
BonnieParticipantI believe (but not 100% sure) that the school tried to set up a drop off line for kids with a route of how they are to drive to drop off but someone from the city said it couldn’t be done because the street was too small. There was some issue. I don’t remember though because I wasn’t involved and heard it second hand.
I understand their concerns! I see people parking all kinds of crazy ways, in front of mailboxes, in front of fire hydrants, on the corners of streets blocking the cross walk, etc. It’s crazy. I usually park halfway down the street. I’ve tried parking on 105th but the road is too narrow and it causes problems getting out.
I believe this man will need to put up a sign asking people not to park in front of his property because if it’s not me parking there someone else will be.

EdSaneParticipant@KBear, they all know its illegal. When the bus bulb was first put in there were plenty of complaints here on the forum and elsewhere.
@singularname, there is only enough room if the vehicles passing the bus really squeeze up next to it. Its a very common occurrence right there. I’m just used to it by now.

VBDParticipantI actually mentioned 2 type of samples. Air samples and samples from things shipped here from Japan. We had suppliers within 50 km of the Fukushima plant, and we were concerned about contamination. I searched for it and found some, albeit a very small amount.
There are plenty of people sampling ocean water. I posted a lengthy article about one organization doing such testing several posts back.

“The fact that people feel they even have a right to ask him to move along is disturbing. Perhaps I should call the police because my neighbors have a broken-down fence. Obviously they need social services if they can’t afford to maintain even the lowest standard of care for their home. I think I heard somewhere that the reason they have a broken fence is because they’re cooking meth inside all day. I find it “uncomfortable” to walk past the broken fence every day. I hate having to explain the broken fence to my children and visitors. And the poor folks trying to sell their house across the street from the broken fence house? Good luck!”
LOL.. with delight. exactly!

trimParticipantFilbert, When you get a small cut on your arm do you call 911 for an ambulance to take you to the hospital? Sounds dumb doesn’t it? Absolutely the same dumb thing if you jump to calling the police without talking to the guy or finding out more information.
August 30, 2013 at 4:29 pm #796106In reply to: What to do about man sleeping in car…
JoBParticipantFilbert..
how could i personally contact the individual in question when i don’t personally know the OP or where they live?
you require me to cruise the streets of West Seattle night after night to find this one car camper and deal with him to prove … what?
how would i even know when i had accomplished that task? Do you have any idea how many car campers there are right now in West Seattle?
i post my contact information here regularly enough that anyone who wants to contact me to ask me to go talk to THIS camper can find me to do so. i am perfectly willing to go talk with them.
it turns out that i know the car campers in my neighborhood and have spoken with most of them.
when i can , I help them find the kind of services that got them off the street…
that’s enough for me..
and i am puzzled as to why you should think you can demand more from me.
I am out actually doing something to keep your community safe…
yet all that inspires in you is anger?
You say you are entitled to feel safe in your own house.
That isn’t exactly true…
you are entitled to BE safe in your own house…
being frightened by something that is outside your norm is not grounds for persecuting people who are not breaking the law…
and FYI, in my opinion, scheming to get a person’s home impounded for a cracked windshield is persecuting them… and.. it’s ineffective. Depriving someone from their home is likely to make you less safe.
strangely enough, i talk with strangers and give them my personal contact information so i can follow up with them
and i still feel safe in my home.
If i speak with anyone and they make me feel uneasy because i observe actual suspicious behavior, i report them to the police.
the funny thing is that the people who make me feel uneasy after speaking with them invariably move along within minutes of contact.
speaking with people is not only a kind policy, it’s effective.
imagine that … a holier than thou do gooder like me advocating an effective policy…
that should make heads roll ;->

What I liked about it is that squirrels supposedly don’t like it. The birds seem to though and go through it like candy.

JoBParticipantFilbert..
didn’t your momma teach you that playing fair is far more satisfying than winning by any means possible?
at the heart of that lesson is the real definition of entitlement… feeling entitled to use any means possible to solve what you perceive as your problem.
the only way anyone is forced to participate in the problems of car campers is if those campers cross the line and cause physical or financial harm.
up to that point.. it’s all about entitlement .. and i am speaking of homeowners, not car campers.
“Interesting that the compassionate souls aren’t falling all over themselves to bring the guy over to THEIR house. If you’re so sad, JoB, hook the guy up….or would that make you uncomfortable? Nothing is stopping you. Step up. Solve the problem and make everyone’s day.”
sorry dude.. you threw that gauntlet at the wrong woman.
stop by some day i will gladly share with you the tales of street people i have “hooked up” with services.
some of them are success stories.. some of them are complete failures… too many limp along somewhere in the middle…
but every one of them knows that someone cared enough about them as human beings to actually stop and talk with them.
i’d do the same for you.

wakefloodParticipantALERT!! Hot Button Post Follows:
So, I noticed, yet again this weekend, that there were 4 or 5 unleashed NON-service dogs walking around with their buddies inside Home Depot this weekend. Now, I double-checked just to be sure and yes, it is posted outside (albeit not very large) that only service dogs are allowed in the store.
For reference, none of the dogs seemed to be unfriendly or menacing in any way. (As mentioned above.)
Home Depot isn’t a place that this bothers me as much as others lately – most specifically restaurants but having said that…
…is this just an extension of the “rules don’t apply to me” syndrome that is rampant in lots of places? Do folks think this worthy of note? Should they just take down the signs?? Open to thoughts.

August 27, 2013 at 9:51 pm #796555In reply to: Affordable West Seattle Family/Newborn Photographer?
rosewaterMemberHi UrbanFabulous! Thank you so much for asking. I can’t speak for any other photographer as there are many different business models out there and my work is primarily done on location (i.e. in the client’s home for a newborn session or at a nearby area for family portraits), which is reflected in the services I offer. Most of my clients do come as referrals because they are interested in my particular style and the experience of working closely with me on a collaborative project. I’m interested in learning about my clients, their interests and how to best portray their everyday life in uniquely beautiful ways.
At this time, I do offer a session package that includes digital files. My price point for this package may be higher than others, but I work hard to create a complete story for the family so that for example, you’re getting 30 photos instead of 6, which allows you to make a really nice album for your family. Newborn sessions are priced a bit higher because they generally last 2-3 hours to take feedings and breaks into account, but also to allow for time to do family portraits and special portraits of mom/dad with baby. I would encourage you to first look at my work first (or anyone else’s work first) before looking at the price point, but I completely understand how it can be hard to budget for quality photos. Our family saves each year to pay our wedding photographer who has since become our dedicated family photographer, to do an annual family photo session and it’s absolutely an investment that sometimes makes even me blush, but the high quality is truly there and I’ve never regretted spending just a little bit more for photos that I will be proud to pass down through generations.
My newborn sessions start at $400 (includes digital files) and family sessions (1 hour on location) sart at $300 (includes digital files). I say ‘start’ because additional siblings and extended family members increase the time involved so my rates adjust accordingly. I don’t advertise ‘mini’ sessions, but I am open to having that discussion if someone is on a tight budget.
I have been busy enough, that I will most likely be transitioning to a more specialized model in 2014, but at the moment I do have some availability in October.
Thanks again!

FilbertMember“Settle down with your superiority and judgment and intolerance and wrap up in them like a warm blanket.”
OK, that was pretty funny coming from the most condescending, holier-than-thou, sanctimonious poster on this thread.
OK blbl. How about you PM your address to Svena, who will pass it along to the guy in question and he can set up camp in front of YOUR house? Seeing how you’re just SOOO morally superior to those who don’t want homeless people living a few yards from where they and their children sleep, you should jump at the opportunity to walk it like you talk it. Put up or shut up.
Svena, on the off chance that blbl is a complete hypocrite, do call the police. Not a 911, high priority deal, of course. Tell them the situation. Be sure to mention the possibility of a restraining order, the fact that car is not legally roadworthy due to windshield (which makes it illegal to move every 72 hours). How about the registration tabs? Does he have insurance? Is the car even in his name? All things of interest to the police who are tasked with protecting the safety of the public.
It’s a shame that the decisions this individual has made led him to being homeless (top of the list: having a child he can’t provide for), but that’s on him, not you. You should not be shamed in to thinking that there is something wrong with not wanting losers living in front of your house on the streets your taxes pay for. There is probably a valid reason the grandparents don’t want him around.

August 19, 2013 at 10:21 pm #796048In reply to: What to do about man sleeping in car…
svenaMember@blbl — that’s a silly thing to say. It’s most certainly “my” block in that I own a house on that block. I am quite confident saying I have much more of an interest in what goes on on my block than he does (or anyone else who doesn’t live on the block), and one of my interests is not seeing strange men sleeping in their car on a nightly basis in front of my home. While he may not technically be on my property, walking out my front door and seeing him reclined with his mouth open in the front seat of his car while parked adjacent to my property is pretty close. It’s not like there are walls that separate my home from the rest of the neighborhood. The sidewalk that runs between the parking strip that I maintain and my house entangle my home with my neighbors and form the block in which I live. It’s more complicated than just saying, “he’s on a public street so there’s no problem.”
While I agree that “stalking” and “extremely dangerous” are probably over the top, and I suppose I do admire this man’s commitment to being involved with his child, his familial drama is spilling over into my little slice of heaven and it’s quite frankly not my problem. Yes, I’m being a total NIMBY here: I don’t want him living in his car while parked in front of my house. I don’t like having to say to my guests, “oh, don’t mind him; he just lives in his car.” I’m sure the couple selling their home aren’t very excited to explain to prospective buyers, “well, there’s a homeless guy who sleeps on the street every night, but he’s at least quiet.”
I’m sure I come off as an entitled, privileged person who doesn’t want his perfect privileged little world marred by a slight bit of poverty, and in a way that is true, but I pay my taxes and expect a reasonable social safety net to be taking care of situations like this, and that system has failed. If this were one or two nights, that’d be one thing, but this man has essentially become a permanent (if slightly mobile) resident, and makes others uncomfortable with his presence. Why would I spend my money on food and toiletries to encourage him to stay there longer? I want him gone, simple as that. Call me cold-hearted.

August 15, 2013 at 8:03 pm #795436In reply to: What are you reading?
anonymeParticipantJust finished “The Cuckoo’s Calling” by Robert Galbraith (aka J.K. Rowling). Quite an enjoyable read, unlike “The Casual Vacancy”. I hope Rowling continues this detective series. I was a huge Harry Potter fan, and her detective novel is a bit like HP for adults.
As I’ve gotten older, young adult fiction has become more appealing. My fave YA author is Maggie Stiefvater. Part two of her latest trilogy is due out next month. “The Raven Boys” was part one, “The Dream Thieves” will be next. Stiefvater has the amazing ability to take a fantasy-based story line and make it completely real. “The Raven Boys” audiobooks are narrated by Will Patton – not my favorite actor, but his reading is incredible.
