I’ve always wondered if anybody even reads those political mailers. We have a huge recycling container right next to the mailboxes in my apartment building. I don’t even glance twice at one of them before tossing them in the bin. And from the looks of it, I’m not the only one.

Does anyone else scrutinize their utility bills as I do?

I have a mini-garbage can (not the littlest one, the next one up – the square one with the impossible lid). SPU has repeatedly charged me for extra garbage pickup. There is absolutely no possible reason for these charges. I often don’t even put the can out, as it’s empty. When I do, it’s usually less than a pound of trash, never more than 5 pounds – kitty litter scoopings for one small cat, mostly. This size can allows for 30 lbs.

When I’ve called SPU to complain, they treat me like a scammer. One representative told me that because I receive utility assistance I had no right to complain…which makes me suspicious of a connection? Has anyone else had a problem with these bogus charges appearing on their bill? It’s usually on the last page, so could be easy to miss.

    In reply to: Bad Neighbor!

    Sue

It wouldn’t surprise me if it was a neighbor. I was a renter in a duplex a few years ago, and my attached neighbor said that someone climbed over her locked gate to unscrew the lightbulb on her porch light because she left it on all night for security and it was apparently bothering someone. (A neighbor eventually admitted doing it – several times.) I can understand that it (like running water, wind chimes, etc.) can be bothersome to some people, but can’t people just say something, or even leave a note if they’re uncomfortable confronting someone?

    Dear Ms Sparkles,

First let me say that I am sorry you had to experience this! I can only imagine how scary this incident was particularly given the danger your children were placed in. Your description of the event clearly identifies that the driver of this vehicle is guilty of reckless endangerment and I hope that it was reported to authorities. And if the driver was indeed stoned, I sincerely hope that they either have their license revoked, or are prevented from driving under the influence by some other means; before they do harm someone.

    ***

Secondly, I hope that you will re-read your posting and consider your own reaction to this incident with your children’s wellbeing in mind. While I empathize with your experience, I find myself equally concerned about your reaction and it’s potential impact.

You wrote “it’s people like you, too dumb, too self absorbed, too selfish to see the impact they have on everything around them”, continuing with “Yes I did threaten to pull them out of their car and beat them to death – and in that moment I had enough anger and adrenaline to actually do it, so kudos to me for self control! (although I’m still not certain that taking them out of society wouldn’t have been a public service).” Finely you conclude: “I WANT [my children] to call idiots out on being dangerous idiots…and I don’t care what word they use to do so.”

I invite you to consider the impact you are having on those around you. Per your own admission, the driver wasn’t intently or willfully trying to harm/ scare you; they were “completely clueless.” And yet you contend that “beating them to death” would be a justifiable reaction; and you state you want your children to mimic your actions/ behavior.

    ***

Unfortunately, we are currently living in a world/ nation where self-centeredness seems to be the status quo. Therefore, most of us see the world through our limited perspective, and thus, I expect that almost all of us perceive the world to be filled with “idiots” at times [myself included]. The problem with this viewpoint is that what constitutes “idiotic behavior” is subjective and often we are only considering our own point of view. The only way **I** know of to break this pattern is through communicating with each other combined with self-reflection. Only when we begin to understand our interconnection, and the fact that our actions impact others can we begin to consider and change the way we interact with each-other.

Similarly, we are living in a country where there has been an epidemic of disillusioned/ disenfranchised (often young) people who are expressing these feeling through mass killings. In fact, a quick search pulled up a USA Today article titled “Behind the Bloodshed: the untold story of America’s mass killings” which states that a low estimate of mass killing (defined as killing 4 or more people) occurs every 2 weeks in our country. Public massacres account for about 1/6 of mass murders (eg Aurora CO, Newtown CT, or Charleston NC); whereas, the majority involve “breakups, estrangements, and family arguments”, with victims knowing the perpetrator (although others are often caught in the crossfire).

As humans we all experience anger, and one of the signs of emotional maturity is our ability to effectively deal with these feeling. As a parent or member of society I believe it is important that we help our youth (and others) understand how to manage our feeling of anger, rather than acting out against others with violence. And yes, shouting and threats are an expression of violence; and studies demonstrate that incidents of violence will most likely escalate without intervention.

If anyone reading this finds themselves struggling with anger management, or finds themselves responding violently when they are upset; the good news is you are not alone and there are proven techniques you can learn to help you manage these feeling. There is support and help for you; and if you learn to manage your anger you will discover that your quality of life will dramatically improve as well as the greater impact you have on the rest of the world. I encourage you to seek assistance and guarantee that if you do to learn this skill, your life will be infinitely better.

    ***

Ms Sparkles – please consider that while you are encouraging your children to “call idiots out” they might engage someone who responds in kind with their own violence resulting in physical harm or the death of your child. Or an equally tragic outcome might be that your children don’t learn anger management skills, and thus, become perpetrators of violence themselves.

I urge you to consider whether your own reaction was “appropriate” and how you truly want your children to engage with others given the possibility they are more like to become victims and/ or perpetrators of violence if they are encouraged to react violently.

You question whether killing the vehicle’s occupants wouldn’t be a benefit to society. When I consider this, I imagine the tragic outcome would be for you to be incarcerated leaving your children without you to raise them. And for our community, the story of a parent committing murder over a traffic incident would likely incite more fear and the potential for increased reactionary violence.

I am relieved Ms Sparkles that you and your children are safe. And I wish you and your family all the best!

    ****

Finely, I hope that WE ALL as a community can change our patterns of violence, and learn how to keep each other safe through self-awareness and compassionate inquiry. Only WE can change the world for the better, and I challenge each of you to participate in making the world better for ourselves and our youth.

Am not here to rant on smokers they are here to stay period and I have to learn to accept that and with the population influx in a community I have lived in now 41 yrs the debris is going to increase a lot. I am very interested in getting individuals together and throw around ideas of how to do an outreach of some kind to smokers either directly through signage and providing butt containers in our bar restaurant and retail areas of west seattle. I have personally observed before and after of not have cigarette butt containers availble and later having them avialble in the same area and smokers use them to discard their butts responsibly. Cigarette filters are the single most littered object worldwide. I believe we can do something to change that in our own community here and I am available to be a part of that.

Following a tip from another WSB post (thank you!), I contacted Bliss who managed to solve creatively and beautifully the issue of the unappealing furnace in the middle of the house, an issue that we’d been trying to solve for years. The encasement he built is nothing short of genius. Bliss moved on to creating bookshelves that fit seamlessly under a staircase (and are beautiful as well). He then completed all of the woodwork and window/door installation (a job another contractor had abandoned!!!) in a bedroom that needed updating. Everything executed with precision, perfection and professionalism (and good humor!).

Zook & Oleson Gardening estan contratando maintenance gardeners.

Experience as a landscaper is not necessary, we can train – but you must speak Spanish. (English is nice but not required.)

Pay starts at $11.50/hr, with prompt raises for demonstrated experience. The position is full time – well, more than full time, really, as we are very busy and generally work 10 hour days. If you need the day off work, that’s usually okay, but if you come in you’ll need to stay until we’re done, usually about 6pm.

We start in West Seattle at 7:30am. You will need to bring your lunch already packed. We drive company trucks to the clients, so your own vehicle or drivers license is not required. The work will initially include the basic tools of lawn care (mowers, edgers and blowers) but would eventually evolve into plant care, container work and fine pruning.

After 90 days, you accrue 6 paid sick days a year, per Seattle city law. All federal holidays except Columbus Day are paid days off (usually that’s 9 a year.) Overtime is paid at time and half, and we are always in overtime. (So a 50 hour work week is normal, but pays 55 hours.) The work is very physical and you must be able to lift 50 lbs.

We work year round with no layoffs. We don’t work Saturdays or Sundays. We’re not looking for a part timer or someone just for the summer – ideally you will dive in and be part of our close-knit crew, every day, for years to come.

We have been around 15 years. We love to work where we live (in West Seattle) but you will also get see some of the great estates of Capitol Hill, Hunts Point, and Medina. We have great employees and wonderful clients, and very little turnover in either. Please call Ben at (206) 595.2793 to discuss, or email ben@zaogardening.com.

    Hasta hablamos, muchas gracias!

We live on Chilberg just off Beach and SW Douglas Place. With the beautiful warm weather we’ve been trying to sleep with the windows open but can’t because there’s a very loud clanging wind chime somewhere out there that keeps us awake. The source is tough to pinpoint (seems to be coming from a home on the hillside), or we’d ask nicely for the owners to consider taking it down at night. Since I feel compelled to try to do something, fwiw I’m posting this general plea to West Seattle residents to please try to be considerate of noise to neighbors before you hang wind chimes (especially the loud clanging kind!). Thanks for reading.

I’m getting sick of the builder grade flat white paint in my house that marks up at the lightest touch. I shouldn’t have to go through as many magic erasers as I do to keep it clean. (seriously a sleeved elbow will leave a mark!) Has anyone recently had a full interior repaint done? How much does something like that cost? I imagine it would take me all summer to paint the inside of my house by myself on the weekends, might be worth the cost to just have it done.

Last night between MN and 0730 there were 22 entries to Dora’s home , based on our security footage. People coming and going in cars, people meeting at the gate or in front of my home, people checking the mailbox, people going out, running in, and sending someone else out all within the 90 second video.

Yesterday Dora’s sister and brother in law showed up at noon. Within 60 seconds they kicked out a woman and young man. The woman is probably the one that assaulted Jeanette Randall at the 7-11, and stole mail down the street this week.

They soon left and returned with multiple bags of groceries and beverages. They stayed until 1345.

They left Dora with the same people that have been conducting all this activity.

Around 1700 the young man who is living there started pacing the front yard, repeatedly giving our camera the finger, playing with himself, and stalking our fence line. He was unable to name of the owner of the home where he has been staying for the last week. “Deb, she’s my Aunt”.Repeatedly calling people, leaning over the gate, looking around, and rocking while gripping the fence. Dan came home at 1720 and warned him off.

I contacted APS yesterday. There is a case open. I left a message for the caseworker.

    Jaqueline Malek-Noonan 206-341-7682.

We need someone to do something about this situation. It is above our pay grade.
