I know that none of you thoughtful people on here would be careless when smoking and discarding your cigarette butts, but, obviously, some people out there do. There has been a big uptick in the number of bark fires, brush fires, illegal burns, etc. We are in a drought situation. We’ve had little to no rain in quite some time, and after next weekend, the temps are supposed to be close to 90 degrees through the 4th of July, at least…and not a drop of rain. So, please think before you are careless…you all know people who don’t use the brain they’re given, who think “rules” don’t apply to them…or who simply don’t care.

The fire the other day at City View Apts. roof was due to discarded smoking material…thousands of dollars in damage, a lot of people seriously inconvenienced as they have to have walls repaired, etc due to water damage. They were lucky to not lose their homes totally.

So..please be careful out there…and enjoy our continuing summer. :)

It is thoughtless and I can’t grasp why people are so irresponsible not only discarding cigarettes out say their car window or on the rooftop of their apartments but also and just as important is along our city streets upon pavement where it’s a constant eyesore and when rains come travel into Puget Sound and other local waterways.

    Bumping this.

There was just fire callout to an apartment building about a block-ish to the southwest of me:

UPDATE: Fire outside 17th SW apartments, out quickly

According to the report at this time, it was caused by a cigarette discarded into a bush, and a deck was scorched.

Besides this, which was relatively minor, and the one that Jan mentions above, there was a fire at an apartment building on Monday, in the Manette neighborhood of Bremerton, which made 15 people Homeless. It was caused by carelessly discarded cigarettes:

These other two incidents, especially the Manette one, reinforce the importance of Jan’s message.

I do not demonize smokers, as it’s a legal activity, and they have a legal right to smoke where allowed. All I ask is that they also dispose of their cigarette butts legally and safely. You’re right that there are way too many fires being started because of cigarettes in a planter or bushes. I was over at Seattle Yarn a week ago (right after the fire at City Watch, where I live), and they found a cigarette in a planter out front. Didn’t start a fire, but certainly could have with how dry it is.

Although the City Watch fire didn’t cause any injuries or homelessness, our building is a mess. Water has now trickled down from the 5th floor to the 1st floor in one part of the building. We are wandering a maze of walls and ceilings being pulled apart and the accompanying noise and dust. Hallways lit by table lamp instead of overhead lights. The place still smells of smoke, 8 days later. Thousands of dollars in damage. All because of a cigarette in a planter – in a building where smoking is NOT allowed, including on the deck.

Smoke if you wish, WHERE IT IS LEGAL, and have some common sense, please!

Just another reason I’d like to see people switch to vaping (ALL the substances). It’s much less smelly and doesn’t result in litter and, of course, fires.

To piggyback off of @PangolinPie I’d like to see more ashtrays on the street, especially near restaurants. Lot of the spots on California have customer and employees smoking out front or in the back alley. Since there are no ashtrays the butts just get discarded. And while we’re at it, we could use a few more garbage cans as well.

I’m afraid I view the concept of a sensible smoker about as viable as that of a considerate suicide bomber.

Am not here to rant on smokers they are here to stay period and I have to learn to accept that and with the population influx in a community I have lived in now 41 yrs the debris is going to increase a lot. I am very interested in getting individuals together and throw around ideas of how to do an outreach of some kind to smokers either directly through signage and providing butt containers in our bar restaurant and retail areas of west seattle. I have personally observed before and after of not have cigarette butt containers availble and later having them avialble in the same area and smokers use them to discard their butts responsibly. Cigarette filters are the single most littered object worldwide. I believe we can do something to change that in our own community here and I am available to be a part of that.

let’s accept the reality and do something about both the litter and the fire danger posed by cigarette butts..

it’s not as though we don’t have the technology
