FarmerbetsyParticipantThere’s a red Honda 2 door Civic sitting in front of my house, licence plate AGT 1196. It was dropped off at about 10 pm Saturday night.

SueParticipantWhat do you mean by “dropped off?” Just that someone parked it there? Unless there are signs saying otherwise, there’s not a problem with it being in the same spot unless it’s not moved within 72 hours. At that point (Tuesday at 10pm) you could report an abandoned vehicle to SPD.

JanSParticipantdropped off Saturday night…when it was snowing. Probably decided to just park it, and walk the rest of the way, perhaps ?

However given the weather circumstances someone probably had to park and walk or stay with a friend. It sucks to find out your tires aren’t up to snuff the hard way but it’s much smarter to park and walk rather than block a road or play bumper cars.

SueParticipantThat’s what I was trying to clarify, hollyplace – whether it was just parked there or if there was suspicion of a junked stolen car (in which case I would’ve suggested calling police ASAP to report it). The “dropped off” was a curious phrase – I had visions of a tow truck dropping it in front of someone’s house.

FarmerbetsyParticipantSo sorry for my vagueness. Excited snowbound kids were clamoring at my knee when I wrote that. Let me re-phrase. We live at on a very quiet street which is marked as a dead end, although technically it does go through to a private alley. Stolen cars are frequently abandoned on our street, and other crimes not-infrequently take place in front of our house. At approximately 10 pm on Saturday night, we looked out of our window to observe aforementioned red Honda parked oddly, next to the deep ditch opposite our house. Due to the snow, we were able to observe that it was very clearly parked, as in, the driver had backed into that spot. There was no evidence of spinning out, no tire marks in the snow to indicate difficulty, nor did we hear a spinout, which we often do. Usually if someone is having trouble with their car in the snow on our hill, they will stand outside of their car talking loudly and trying to move it. They might even leave a note on the dashboard indicating they are coming back for the car.
However, when the cars are stolen and abandoned, they are just — left. In the best case, the car is left unlocked, we look through the car, get the information, track down and call the owner, and they come and pick it up. And yes, that has happened enough that we have a routine about it.
In this case, the car appears to have been abandoned but not due to the inability to continue up the hill in the snow. We hesitate to report it immediately to the police, even though it is semi-blocking our driveway, in case someone did legitimately leave it there with the intention of returning.
My goal in posting the message on the Blog was, if YOU lost your red Honda, you could just come pick it up, rather than getting it towed and impounded and having to go through the hassle and expense of going to pick it up.
If it is still there after 72 hours, I will do the other thing I do, when cars are abandoned on our street, and report it appropriately.
I hope that answers all of your questions. Again, I apologize for the brevity of my original posting.

Barry2012ParticipantFarmerBetsy, I thought your post was written just fine and I’m sorry that you were even questioned in the first place. As someone who has had their civic stolen, and dropped off in front of a house I appreciate your posting very much. My car was found by police after a neighbor called. My car was filled with stolen electronics so cops assumed the kids planned on coming back for it. Had an alert neighbor such as yourself not noticed it would have been taken again.
Again, I appreciate this posting very much and I’m sorry that you had to unecessarily further explain yourself.

KBearParticipantIf you suspect the car may have been stolen, why not report it right away? If it hasn’t been reported as stolen by its owner, the police aren’t going to tow it unless it’s illegally parked.

amaliaParticipantThanks for posting, FarmerBetsy! It was kind of you. If the police recover a stolen vehicle and don’t get in touch with you IMMEDIATELY, they will have it towed and you’ll have to pay to get it out of hock.

FarmerbetsyParticipantWhile I was typing my novel, the red car disappeared. KBear, careful reading would reveal to you my intent: it was hard to tell whether the car was in fact stolen, or whether someone really did have a hard time getting up the hill in the snow. Rather than having someone towed, we chose to give them the benefit of the doubt.
I am continually astonished at the grouch factor on the WSB… and the rest of the blogosphere… but free speech is a blessing and curse in our society.

PDieterParticipantjust a point of order or two from someone who just had a vehicle stolen from our business and I was in charge of recovery.
– no reason to wait 72 hrs to report it, the police may wait that long to respond but also have stolen plate numbers on file and ready to flag before the 72 hrs.
– the person who reports their car stolen has the choice of authorizing the police to impound it if found or call them first to let them arrange recovery, so again just report such a car and the recovery arrangements are already in place the way the folks involved want it.

pinkgooseberryMemberI was following this post because I have red Honda myself. We woke up this morning and our red Honda is stolen now. This is our 3rd time getting stolen. Red Honda Civic 1993. License number ABV2048. Please keep eyes. Thank you.
