  • I am trying to find the post from the person who was seeking a cat to “borrow” for an elderly woman in hospice care who has lost her own cat and needs a replacement cat to cuddle. I don’t know if a connection was ever made, but there was just a post today from Sarah Reijnen to the VashonALL Facebook page where she is looking for someone to “borrow” her cat for a few months. Seems like a love connection to me.

Lately, I’ve had a need to visit bike shops and have gotten a little put out at the attitudes at some of those shops. Yes, it’s true that I don’t know all there is to know about my bicycle, but that’s why I go to a bicycle shop – to get information as well receive fixes, purchase gear and ask for advice. I have received instead, eye rolling at one shop, attempts to bamboozle me into a larger purchase at another (I’m not totally stupid about bikes) and yet another that allowed me to stand around while the younger guys packed up and chatted, ignoring families, women and older people waiting for service.

With one exception: Alki Bike and Board. Their mechanics and floor people are friendly, helpful and their prices very reasonable! They not only fixed my bike but did a couple of extra small fixes at no charge and helped me upgrade some of my gear at a reasonable cost. They were also very fast and gave me great advice. They are going to be my “go-to” bike shop from now on!

fering, it was really brave of you to confront the dad. I’m glad you called CPS. Thanks to littlebrowndog for suggesting it. I hope they’ll fully investigate the situation.

I used to live in an apartment with a next door neighbor who had a little terrier who would literally cry when she was gone during the day. This was particularly bothersome to me because I work from home often. I am not all that comfortable with confrontation (yeah, yeah, typical Seattleite, I know), so I left her a note. I worded it in a way that hopefully wouldn’t put her on the defensive. Something like “You may not be aware of this, but when you are away, your dog cries and barks frequently. Unfortunately, it is disturbing to those of us who work at home during the day. I suspect she may have some separation anxiety…” You get the picture. And then I enclosed a printout from an online pet store with anti-bark training devices. It worked – I rarely heard the dog after that.

ramino: Just curious – do your neighbors keep the dogs outside, or are you hearing the howling from inside the house?

“I have no evidence to support that our money’s been unwisely used (and just exactly who gets to make THAT determination?) or what’s REALLY going on with the Parks but I’ll force you to prove a negative anyway!”-wakeflood, who are you quoting here, yourself?

passive/aggressive?innuendo? Is that how you debate the pros and cons of a proposition by calling someone passive/aggressive?

So what? what I say is innuendo but all your arguments are facts?

The facts of Prop 1 is in the RCW for a Metropolitan Park District. Either you feel it beneficial for city council to gain that amount of power and authority over our parks or you see it as detrimental. Personally, I read this proposal as most detrimental to our parks. I see it as relinquishing the last bit of say we the people have for our parks. I see it as a way to get the public to pay for some fantastical waterfront park that won’t be for everybody but only those who can afford it. I see it as a way to get private contractors in our park system. These are my perspectives on what I believe can happen with a MPD controlled by the city council.

I am not a *whiny baby nor passive aggressive because my view is different than someone else’s.

I think it telling when one side feels the need to resort to childish name calling tactics.

*a term used by the writers of the stranger and promoted by the ‘yes for prop 1’ in their mailer campaign.

How heartbreaking! Thank you for saying something and doing something. If that’s the punishment the poor kid gets in PUBLIC for a normal kid thing (accidents happen) then I can’t imagine what kind of punishment happens at home. Good on you for contacting CPS.

I hadn’t heard about this but will agree that Westwood management has made several decisions lately that make me question spending time or money there.

Good Neighbor Vet did two clinics a month at Pet Pros but yesterday was the last one. Apparently the owner of Westwood Village asked them not to return. I would like to know the full story; I have heard that he/she only wants Westwood Village businesses to make money. I shop at multiple stores and use the gym there but I will be limiting my use of Westwood Village now. I don’t see what the problem with a twice a month drop-in Vet is and plenty of people use it, including employees of the Village.

We’ve rented our basement via airbnb a number of times (about 10 times a year the last couple years) and have had no major issues (a malfunctioning toilet and a guest who was sick and asked my wife to get some OTC cold medication are about as bad as it’s gotten).

We are a bit selective about who we let stay (e.g. generally stays of no longer than 5 days (there is no kitchen and our laundry room is in the basement), and we avoid people who have not done much research about the area (so we won’t have to answer a lot of questions) or people who want to show up at midnight, etc.) so we don’t have much interaction with them while they are staying (the basement has a separate entrance too). The perfect guests have been new grandparents whose kids don’t have enough room for visitors, so they sleep and shower at our house then are gone all day (the first people we hosted were in this situation and their daughter turned out to live across the street from us). None of our neighbors have had any problems with the situation; the folks on either side of us know we do it and have never had issues with guests either.

A friend who was less selective had some major problems (drunk and fighting guests that had to be evicted, possessions stolen, people using the kitchen without permission, and a guest who after booking said they were going to have their bachelorette party there); airbnb was very helpful in those cases and also gave her a week-long stay at any location in the world, so they try to make things right if things go wrong.

We have also had good experiences renting via both airbnb and vrbo; we are going to Montana next month and have a place in Bozeman reserved for a week.

And since you brought it up…

I stated that I thought that Mr. Judd’s voting NO suggestion directly implied it was the best way to make the elephant situation go away, you said…

“As for the zoo, I don’t read that implication into Judd’s piece at all.”

So, when I quoted him in the article, you apparently conceded that point to take issue with something else. That something else being the tone of my note.

    Okee dokee…

Sounds like a case of agree to disagree. :-)

TanDL – I never suggested anyone wasn’t entitled to their opinions, nor was I attempting to be disrespectful to you.

I suggested there was faulty logic at play in Mr. Judd’s assumption.

But, as always, take it any way you feel inclined.

Among the Intelligence Committee’s findings, according to Thompson:

    — Intelligence agencies were “warned about an increased threat environment, but did not have specific tactical warning of an attack before it happened.”

    — “A mixed group of individuals, including those associated with al Qaeda, (Moammar) Khadafy loyalists and other Libyan militias, participated in the attack.”

    — “There was no ‘stand-down order’ given to American personnel attempting to offer assistance that evening, no illegal activity or illegal arms transfers occurring by U.S. personnel in Benghazi, and no American was left behind.”

    — The administration’s process for developing “talking points” was “flawed, but the talking points reflected the conflicting intelligence assessments in the days immediately following the crisis.”

The newly formed select committee on Benghazi-flogging run by Trey Gowdy will continue trying to pin something on somebody named Clinton, but this report (voted out of committee by Repubs) should make it easier to drown out their bleating with laughter.

“Think it through, Ronnie.” I don’t know who the heck you think you’re talking to Wake, but there’s not anyone named Ronnie here, so you can stop it anytime. Mr. Judd and I are just as entitled to our opinions as you are… and we CAN think it through to different conclusions than you have come to, thank you very much.

And if nothing else comes of this line of reasoning, maybe our liberal, love-all-the-animals city will finally wake up to the abuse going on at the zoo and force them to deal with their elephants in a humane manner for a change. There was a flap awhile ago about it, but it has died down and still Seattle’s elephants are treated poorly. Sorry, but I don’t think handing the zoo even more unaccounted for tax dollars via Prop 1 is the way to go.

there’s a comedian named Bobby Collins who used to do a routine about Eastern Airlines and lost luggage. The term he coined was ‘centrifugalbumblefu…dge’. He defined it as going in increasingly smaller concentric circles until you disappear up your own …

TanDL – “Ergo, the best remaining way for local taxpayers to control what happens to public money handed to the zoo is to simply stop providing it.”

This, directly after several paragraphs about the elephants.

I don’t know how that DOESNT directly imply that voting NO means the best way to make elephant shenanigans stop. There’s also no reason to think that it will. Especially if they derive revenue from the practice. In which case it’s actually MORE likely to continue if you pull funding. Think it through, Ronnie.

Do I like having a zoo in the city limits? Absolutely. Do I want to subsidize it. Sure. Do I agree with every expenditure for ANY subsidized City entity? Nope. Will that ever change? Nope. Will that prevent me from voting to tax myself for things like Parks and other infrastructure? Nope. I take it case by case and this one is good enough.

Nothing about governance is immutable. We can change it if we find it lacking.

    From The San Francisco Chronicle:

WASHINGTON — The House Intelligence Committee, led by Republicans, has concluded that there was no deliberate wrongdoing by the Obama administration in the 2012 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, said Rep. Mike Thompson of St. Helena, the second-ranking Democrat on the committee.

The panel voted Thursday to declassify the report, the result of two years of investigation by the committee. U.S. intelligence agencies will have to approve making the report public.

Thompson said the report “confirms that no one was deliberately misled, no military assets were withheld and no stand-down order (to U.S. forces) was given.”

Well, waddaya know about that. Who could have predicted that after 2 years of phony hearings, endless propaganda, lies, and misleading Fox news talking point festivals, the Repubs themselves would give it up? Bet they’re gonna hear about that from the Teapublicans.

Well, I was going to say Glenn Miller (age 40?) until I saw the “G” had to sound like “J” … geez.

So I’ll say George Gershwin (age 38) instead.

Does Judd’s article imply that a result of Prop1 failure would be the automatic termination of the elephant program?

Are these things directly connected? Or just insinuated? And why would the success of Prop 1 possibly prevent the citizens from making this go away?

The answer of course, is it wouldn’t.

Ok, so I read his short article and it does IMPLY that prop1 failure equals termination of the program. Less funding for the Zoo AT LARGE means the program goes away. That’s misleading as it gets. He may be against Prop 1 but that argument is a red herring.
