How to deal with neighbor's howling dogs in West Seattle

Just looking for ideas on how to deal with howling dogs of neighbors in West Seattle. These are very nice people and we will certainly talk to them, but some of this may be out of their control because the dogs howl when they are away at work. This happens sometimes early in the morning after they have left. We believe one solution would be for them to train them to not howl, but I’m not sure they would have free time to do this and it does not normally occur while they are at home.

i had this problem with my dog. it was separation anxiety. my guy was a rescue so it made sense. try martha norwalk she is an animal behaviorist and has a radio show every sunday from 9-noon on kknw 1150am. lots of information and you can call in with questions. an animal talker could as the dogs what is the real issue. polly klein @ tonglen healing arts for animals is my personal fav. if all else fails, earplugs might help.

This is a tough situation because people who leave their dog outside all day while they are at work are pretty clueless. Even if they have a dog walker stop by and take the dog out for an hour or two, they can’t expect that the dogs aren’t going to bark and howl for a significant period of time. Doggy daycare is the best option, but it is almost as expensive kid daycare, so is out of reach for some people who haven’t thought through the reality of owning a dog while working full time in a high density city.

I might video them to show the owner, since it doesn’t happen while they are home. just a thought!

Call and complain to the city. They will send them a nice letter that explains the city ordinance to them. I did this after repeated tries to reach out to the neighbor. They fixed it after the letter was sent out.

Mixed reviews, but this worked perfectly for us a few years ago.

When the dog barks it emits a high pitched sound that only the dog can hear. Our neighbors dogs stopped barking – and were unharmed – within a few days.

Just keep it in a dry spot.

In reference to dog daycare I just started my dog at Sound Animals Daycare in Interbay as a extention of her training for socialization. They will pick up and bring your dog back home and the cost is $35.00 per day. Our dog loved it and she was exhausted from playing with other friends. The effects lasted 2 additional days.

Our dog is Lab, Border and Pit so there is a lot of energy needing to be relieved on top of 2 walks a day for the most part by us. Most people want $25.00 to take your dog out for 30 min. Check it out, glad I was able to do it.

I used to live in an apartment with a next door neighbor who had a little terrier who would literally cry when she was gone during the day. This was particularly bothersome to me because I work from home often. I am not all that comfortable with confrontation (yeah, yeah, typical Seattleite, I know), so I left her a note. I worded it in a way that hopefully wouldn’t put her on the defensive. Something like “You may not be aware of this, but when you are away, your dog cries and barks frequently. Unfortunately, it is disturbing to those of us who work at home during the day. I suspect she may have some separation anxiety…” You get the picture. And then I enclosed a printout from an online pet store with anti-bark training devices. It worked – I rarely heard the dog after that.

ramino: Just curious – do your neighbors keep the dogs outside, or are you hearing the howling from inside the house?
