I started looking into replacements windows (we had the original 1950s from when the house was built) several years ago. We have a sliding glass door and 10 windows, which range in size from 10 inches x 36 inches to the biggie at 5 feet by 7 feet. The 9 bids ranged from $3000 (a door-to-door person, who would not tell me if the price included hauling away old windows and warranty– or even manufacturer of window!) to $24,000. I quit looking when job our job went away, but started looking again a year later when employed again. Several of the companies were no longer in business. Glad I didn’t go with any of them! I finally chose Valley Glass, they had been a middle bid originally, they were nice both times they came out, they had a decent product, they finished in one day, and when one of the sliders on a window failed later, they came and fixed it –for free! It was about $4500 for all the windows and the slider door, but this was 3 years ago.

It has made a HUGE difference in the temperature of the house, with most happily it being 15+ degrees cooler inside in the summer.

I concur with homedk. Although I had my handyman measure all the windows and place the order. All went well. My only regret is that I didn’t chose a better window. Mine are CDI, and I chose them because they had a lower profile around the frame than most of the others and some of my windows are kind of small to begin with. However, the CDI windows are now fogging up. Although, to be honest, I don’t know how long a sealed window should remain so.

Just helped my mom move. She gave me some extra Softsoap refills, the 80oz size that you get at Costco. Well 2 hours later I find one sideways, no cap spilled and almost entirely soaked into my front passenger seat!! (It was folded flat, I was hauling a ton of garden tools and a cooler. I just wiped up what I could. It’s after 10pm, I don’t have a shop vac or Bissell, I have to go to work early in the morning and can’t deal with it until tomorrow afternoon after it bakes in the sun parked at work. Would a detailer have a better steam cleaner to get the soap out? It’s covering the entire seat and back of the front passenger seat! I was planning on trading in next winter so I want to make sure this doesn’t turn into a sticky gross mess! Thankfully it’s black cloth interior. Argh. It’s been a whirlwind weekend moving my mom to Oregon only to get home this late and find this. Any detailer recommendations in West Seattle or South Park?

we have a row of lavender plants along a retaining wall in our yard (corner lot, but plants are along neighbor’s property line and can’t be reached from that side). Someone came all the way across our back yard from the sidewalk into our vegetable garden and snipped off all the lavender blooms.

I hit the internet expecting to find that this is somewhat common and there is a lavender market akin to coper scrap….nada. I don’t see much of any reports world wide of lavender bloom theft. WTF?

    On 39th near Holy Rosary.

PS I don’t come here for “the world is going to hell”, or “people got no morals” etc affirmations….I’m looking to see if anyone has seen this before or has any information on the practice.

“Obama will not have impeachment proceedings started. This is a ploy to get the Democratic base to show up in the midterms.”

Obama cannot begin impeachment proceedings against himself. The Republican House has to do that and since they’re the ones that are insinuating it might happen I would find it odd that Repubs are trying to fire up the Dem base.

“Now, if there is a concrete link between the IRS and the White House, there will be hell to pay. And since Biden would resign like Obama, Boehner (God Help US) would be President.”

Now there’s a Republican fantasy. Obama will be serving out his entire term, I’m afraid and after that you should get used to hearing the words President Clinton.

A friend of mine who has worked on the City Council in the past told me the following:

He urges his friends to vote NO. (In his message to me and his other friends he said)…The vote would create a permanent new parks governance structure that would have twice the taxing authority supporters claim they plan to use, and that as a practical matter cannot be repealed once adopted.

It eliminates entirely the role the citizens now have in approving levies for specific parks development projects, which is in no small part the real intent of supporters (that $500 million waterfront park isn’t going to pay for itself, and cruise ship companies and other downtown businesses would like nothing more than to push the cost off to property owners and renters citywide). The League of Women’s Voters recommends a NO vote, as do many other progressives and longtime Democrats not withstanding the attempts of the pro campaign to accuse anyone who raises legitimate questions about this proposal as an Eymanite.

You know me. I am not usually supportive of the ideas my progressive friends promote but I agree with Matt completely on this. I will be voting NO.

Hey, I took the DISC test just for fun. Turns out I’m “Dominant, Inspiring, and Cautious,” as well as:

    •Directive,

    •Quick-witted,

    •Results-oriented, and

    •Fast-paced

    YAY me!

On the negative side, does that mean I’m also pushy, hyper, and a wise-acre? Actually, the results are pretty accurate.

Seattle parks are in desperate need of a reliable, consistent funding source, especially to avoid the various privatization schemes that pop up from time to time. In general, I am a big fan of MPDs, but unfortunately this proposal has some flaws, most significant of which is having it administered by the city council. Having an MPD administered by the legislative branch is not the usual structure, specifically in a large city. An oversight committee frankly doesn’t have any authority. A city council, whether at-large or by district, has too many other interests and concerns and influences to properly take on this role. I will likely vote NO.

Oh sure there is a citizen’s oversight committee, they get to sit and watch…

“It wouldn’t be an easy or quick process but it could be done.” Why set ourselves up this way? Personally I don’t want more power concentrated in fewer hands. I wonder about the monorail and eminent domain, was it for the entire city or was it limited to route specific?

Because it seems with reading the RCW that the word park just needs to be mentioned and the city council suddenly has A LOT of authority in regards to our parks and public land.

To call opposing the zipline in Lincoln Park hysteria is belittling. There were many valid reasons that that proposal sucked. How much do you think someone really cares for the park when they would destroy the canopy as habitat that has been developing for 100+ yrs? Not all parks are for only humans.

If Prop 1 passes, the people will have no recourse until after the damage is done. We will have given away our power to stop idiotic ideas from taking place in our parks.

RANT to the middle-aged couple with well-behaved white standard poodle walking along Alki Trail 9pm Friday who were so busy spouting kind (not) and helpful (not) comments to me regarding my 2 rescue puppies who were behaving horribly, that they didn’t hear my apologies or requests for help or my explanation that I’m a new owner learning as fast as I can.

I can only hope that perhaps they were visiting from SoCal and have already returned home?

A very interesting web site regarding traffic and merging, and how one car can break up a traffic jam.

    .

    http://trafficwaves.org/

    .

This web site was created by William Beaty, a local electrical engineer in Seattle, and I recall seeing him on one of the local TV stations a number of years ago.

    .

I have tried some of his techniques, and they DO work!

Make sure to check out the “zipper” link.

Just curious as to why the red buses might be honking like crazy at the green buses when they’re letting passengers off. I see this daily. Are the green buses not supposed to be using the same stops? That’s the only thing I can think of. Regardless, it seems rude; if not to the bus driver, then to the people living nearby.

I say it’s about time this subject came up…,my thought was that Israel is in a strategic location for us. But I’m with the rest of yall on this one. I think we just need to stay out of it this time, but I feel we’re “bed partners” now. Too much history backing them now to get out of this mess.

I objected to such a money making business in the park. I’m sure ziplining is fun for a lot of people. There was a more appropriate place for it somewhere else.

As far as Prop.1 is concerned. I doubt I’d vote for anything that takes the ability to object away from the public permanently. I do not trust our city council to do things in our best interest. There should always be safeguards in it for us.

My personal opinion on the situation in Israel is pretty mixed. Considering the long history in that region, dating back to b.c., my gut says neither the Palestinians or the Israelis deserve that stretch of land. Just my opinion on that specific topic though.

But my real question is, Americans? Why do Americans, especially on social media feel the need to take a side? My Facebook news feed is lit up with both sides propaganda. What does a person born and raised in Seattle, or anywhere else here in the U.S. have to do with Israel? I know all the religious mambo-jambo, but is there more to why American folks feel so connected to Israel? Or is it just more people dieing in the name of God stuff? I’m getting a little frustrated with all of it.

Hi All: I know there are some self-employed folks on here who can hopefully help a girl out…my wife is beginning to think about starting her own biz, but needs to bounce some high level questions off an accountant first. Things like LLC vs S Corp stuff and what gets deducted. Any recommendations of someone local and good who will tell it like it is? Thanks!

Yep – I move ahead both there, but more so onto northbound I-5. I can’t believe that people will get to the top of the ramp at I-5 and slow down to merge when there is a mile of open road ahead of them. Particularly when you consider that there is almost always a good, at-speed merging opportunity available if you just move forward. Compounding the problem is that some people are in that lane to get to eastbound 90, and are held up because somebody has decided they have to merge RIGHT THERE at the beginning.
