Our company has used Advanced Radon Technologies out of Spokane. In the past, Dave has come over to the Puget Sound area for maintenance and installation of mitigation fans for vapor intrusion issues (explained on his website). He has many years experience. I’d give him a call to discuss your concerns. http://advancedradontech.net/

1 pCi/l is still the lowest zone. (2 pCi/l is the zone 3 cutoff). Pretty minimal, but if that’s a concern, a simple fan would probably be fine if your basement is really sealed well.

    Gatewood and West Seattle neighbors:
Many of you have vegetable gardens and fruit trees (plum, apple, etc.) loaded with beautiful veggies and fruit unharvested and allowed to rot. What a waste! There are a number of charities in Seattle eager to have your fresh fruit. One is particular is the Jubilee Women’s Center (https://www.jwcenter.org/services-learn-more/#terDonate). Fresh fruit and vegetables are high on their wish list. Please consider donating your produce! Win win!

Might I also suggest … if possible … try contacting the property owner before reporting to the city. Especially if you live in the neighborhood. Citations can cost money the property owner might not have, particularly in this economic crunch, and hearing from someone first might jolt them to get out with clippers.

Is it just me or have our sidewalks been taken over by flowers, bushes and trees? I was pushing a stroller and found it hard to navigate the sidewalks so my kids weren’t smacked in the face by them. And as I am looking down to steer stroller away from overgrowth, I get hit on the head with low hanging branches! It’s easier to walk in the street, which isn’t safe for anyone. I’ve thought about walking around my neighborhood and cutting back growth myself but I simply don’t have time {note aforementioned kids + work}. So, in lieu of that is there anything that can be done to get our sidewalks back?!

Does anyone know of a self-service copy machine in the Admiral business district? I’ve always relied on the library’s high-quality machine when I’ve needed to make hard copies of private documents or government forms, but all the public libraries remain closed, and clearly won’t be an option this year (my forms are due in two weeks), Thanks for any advice about another self-service copy machine in the Admiral business district.

I use an electric leaf blower/vacuum once or twice a year when it is clearly more effective and efficient. But that is perhaps 5% of the time. The rest of the time I prefer using a rake or broom, and the quiet that comes with them. Many times I think the goal with leaf blowers is not to clean up a problem but to move it, preferably to someone else’s property.

The neighbors leaves seem to accumulate in my driveway, when wet they become slippery.. then they get tracked into the house. Plus they plug up the city surface water drain down the street.
So, what I’m getting at is.. If the home owner cleaned up the leaves before the wind blows them into my yard and everyone else’s (too), then I wouldn’t have to run the blower to clean up the mess.

The home owner is responsible to clean up the snow from the sidewalk in front of their house. If someone was slip and fall, they can file a claim with your home owners insurance. same thing applies for leaves.

As a retired horticultural professional, I agree that leaf blowers (and line trimers, and mowers) are obnoxious and need to be regulated. And the noise and air pollution aren’t the only problems. One issue I NEVER see addressed is the amount of plastic introduced into the ecosystem via the use of line trimmers. Every time a line trimmer is used, hundreds (if not thousands) of tiny bits of plastic line are distributed in the soil. Plastic pollution is not just a threat to oceans, but to land as well. This is the cheap and easy way to maintain landscapes, but there are other costs to this laziness.

Leaf blowers are obnoxious under any circumstances (how did we ever survive without them? /s). But are you saying people are running gasoline-powered leaf blowers when the air quality is very unhealthy? That’s pollution for sure, plus it’s unnecessary.
Many communities across the nation have banned this damn things. The noise is an overbearing nuisance to residents working and studying at home; and people should not have to breathe dust particles created by leaf blowers while trying to stave off Covid-19, a deadly respiratory disease.

Hi Kathleen: I moved in the last month and used New Horizons moving Co located in Burien — I used them after seeing them recommended and highly regarded on a couple of local FB pages. Josh, the owner was very responsive and gave me a very accurate estimate and put the exact right crew on my job for my items and needs. I was very happy with them and would recommend them and use them again. I used a different company 3 years ago I wouldn’t call back. New Horizons, Josh, 206-483-8071. I had a 3 man crew at $140/hr, 2 hr. minimum. They did a local move and also trip to storage.

Hi, I am a member of the CTF and I can tell you they are fully vetting the tunnel. It is one of the replacement options being considered in the CBA. They added an extra 250k to the process to ensure it was fully vetted even though it is something that should be looked at during the ‘size, scope, location” discussion that happens after the CBA. They moved it up to calm peoples fears of it being left out and put a quarter million dollars down to back that move. Whoever told you it wasn’t being consider hasn’t been closely following the project.

    Hello West Seattle Community,

I’ve set up this on-line petition to urge Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to seriously consider an immersed tube tunnel (ITT) similar to the system that supports BART and many other underwater thoroughfares worldwide. Per a presentation from local engineers, the ITT solution has numerous benefits including lower cost, faster construction, a good safety record, longevity, and earthquake resilience.

From what I understand, SDOT is focused on repair or replacement of the bridge and may have “tunnel vision” – pun intended! It’s unclear what political and business pressures will influence a decision; we must avoid another lengthy, costly bridge option unless it’s the only solution. Proper evaluation of an ITT requires SDOT to bring in outside experts and think outside of the box. We MUST keep up the pressure on them!

On September 27th, I will submit this petition to our Councilwoman Lisa Herbold who can bring our collective voice to the SDOT bridge replacement task force of which she is a member.

Petition to SDOT – DEADLINE SEPT 26

If you want to learn about the ITT, here is some information from the local engineer who has done much analysis of this option.

Thank you for your interest and support!

A drone flew over our airspace this evening at approximately 7:35 p.m., and after I pointed in the air in its direction and mouthed that they were invading our privacy, it flew lower and hovered over our backyard. This is absolutely an invasion of privacy, and I understand you must have a license to operate this device. If anyone else experiences this, please let us know. I am an attorney and will follow-up with the county prosecutor about this invasion of privacy if I get more information from others experiencing the same. Thank you and stay safe.
