(I somehow managed to remove the previous post I put out, or access to it.) Here it is again:

While Geocaching in Puget Ridge Playground, I found a tan/mauve-ish Elco jewelery box in the grass on the east side of the park. It contained a silver bracelet, with the name “Joshua” inscribed on the top. If you’re able to identify the bracelet further -including link type, what the inscribed plate looks like, and other inscriptions- I’ll reunite you. I can be reached at zengirl74@yahoo.com.

Yep, adding to the chorus here for Dr. Kae. Love him–he’s big on minimizing unnecessary procedures/tests/expenses and he and the hygenists are so personable and professional. My husband goes to Dr. George Naden up in Admiral, who he also raves about (we had an insurance switch-up that caused a rift in the family dental continuum…). So I’d recommend either of them.

Ditto others’ recommendations of Dr. Kae. I switched to him from a Morgan Junction dentist last year, even though my first dentist was very convenient (walking distance from home). She just wasn’t very warm and didn’t explain much, but when my regular hygienist and the wonderful front desk manager left, I no longer felt it was a good fit for me.

I love Dr. Kae and his staff.

I quit my dentist for the same reason, Robindianne. She made me feel like some whacko because I only wanted x-rays once every two years. And for a perfectly healthy person with absolutely no issues like me, that’s actually what the AMA recommends (no, not the ADA, but the AMA). Anyway, she made me sign a release saying I was refusing recommended service and the hygenist lectured me like some mom who won’t vaccinate her kid. Anyway, I’m very happy with my new dentist in Bellevue.

    Hello residents of West Seattle,

My 1996 2 door silver Honda Civic, license plate # 682 YGW was stolen from the Admiral Junction at some point last night 1/19/14. It has a dent on the drivers side rear wheel.

It was stolen Mid-December from 52nd Ave and Andover. Only one person was arrested and I am afraid the accomplice to the initial crime is responsible for the second theft as I had mail in the vehicle and they were aware of my home address.

In any case, if you see this car please contact the police. I would greatly appreciate all of the help from my community in tracking down my car. Keep an eye out West Seattle, and invest in a steering wheel lock! Thank You!

Franci, we are in the same boat. Performance is not a authorized medicare supplier for supplies. They can provide the oxygen and the machines but not masks and tubing. It reminds me that I need to call them again and find out who is the supplier. They told me a couple of months ago they were going to give our name and number to the supplier that they work with and I haven’t gotten a call. I will have to put it on my list of calls.

I thought my MIL was crazy when she bought us a toilet bidet for Christmas last year, lol. However, now we love it. It is so much more hygienic and environmentally friendly than toilet paper or baby wipes. We still use a little of both, but much less than before. It sounds weird and maybe a little gross if you aren’t familiar with the concept, but it really is something worth considering. Here is some propaganda: http://products.mercola.com/toilet-bidet/

My MIL would be so proud, lol.

I’m struck by the absence of any comments about the political aspects of the “war on science” or, in deference to wsn00b, the “campaign against science.” One only has to look at the efforts of Seattle-based Discovery Institute to counter science-based school curricula throughout the country with thinly-veiled religious teachings to appreciate the deliberate nature of this campaign.

For a number of reasons, the United States has had a large Christian, evangelical movement going back to the late 1700’s and early 1800’s. At various times, religious groups became engaged in political issues such as prohibition and anti-communism. But it was the Jerry Falwell-led Moral Majority and Pat Robertson’s later Christian Coalition that came to the aid of the Republican Party, alarmed that Jimmy Carter had received a large measure of support from Christians. You can trace the shift within the GOP (and GHW Bush in particular) away from prior support for family planning and Planned Parenthood in order to gain favor from the organized Christian Right to appreciate the rapid trajectory of that shift. Experiencing the benefits of support from highly motivated, well-organized conservative Christian organizations, the GOP increasingly embraced social conservative positions to expand and solidify that support. Over time, the co-mingling of these political and religious interests has become increasingly tight. So this is not simply a philosophical debate, it is a matter with serious political and social implications.

I happen to like the rich irony seen in the 2012 election campaign when several politicians who gained standing by appealing to the religious right, appeared to forget the cynical, manipulative nature of the relationship and began spouting half-baked gobbledygook about gynecology as if it were scientific fact and freaked out women throughout the country. I think the posturing against global warming draws on the same anti-science mindset that is popular within the GOP even though the real driver is traditional conservative resistance to any government regulation of business.

For those who despair about a loss of appreciation of the beauty or wonder of the natural world, I encourage you to read Richard Dawkin’s Unweaving the Rainbow which I believe points to a richer, more deeply satisfying sense of the natural world than any religious story-line.

I seem to recall a comment by Carl Jung although I can’t locate the source in which he said, more or less, that as a scientist one has to conclude that God certainly exists —-as a element of human consciousness, because the same basic features show up in cultures throughout the world. If you follow Jung’s writings, particularly the inspiring Answer to Job, you quickly appreciate that the concept of God in human societies has evolved over time as those societies have become less primitive and the individuals gradually became more conscious about their relationship to the world.

My own thought is that God is an aspect of the human psyche, one that contains so much psychic energy that when activated, tends to overwhelm the narrow control of the ego. The effort of psychologists and meditators is to assimilate the psychic material or complexes from the unconscious into consciousness. Advanced meditators, some considered “realized beings” in their traditions, mostly seem to agree with Jung— that God and the Self achieved by this psychic integration are the same. That’s a fairly infrequent achievement, but the various traditions and teachings do seem to concur that the mind shapes one’s experience of reality. More simply put by a keen observer of human nature, “the world is as you see it.”

I’d like to think it is reasonable to expect people to appreciate and accept the differences between religious experience and scientific observation. But since both eventually inform decisions about social issues, I suppose most people will favor one over the other as the issues come up for discussion. That’s why it’s really important to recognize the campaign against science being used as is convenient by the GOP to gain support from the Religious Right and to push back against it whenever it intrudes on matters outside the walls of the Church.

thanks! I kinda forgot what I was going to say, except to agree with post # 44.

and also to ponder what the wax-ers think of the change in trends- didn’t waxing used to mostly be for eyebrows and upper lips? I mean, that is not a job I could do…. (but I also do not think I could be a dental-hygienist either- staring into peoples’ mouths all day)

thanks for linking a photo- the print for the sign is really small after all. and it says ‘clean’ not bare. which is the idea that some here seem to be so upset about. maybe one person’s concept of ‘clean’ is not the same as others. or maybe it is, who knows

Our 3-year-old son is currently in f/t Montessori school Mon-Fri on Capitol Hill. Our family recently moved to the Alki neighborhood and are looking to keep him local on his mom’s WFH day, Friday, to avoid the drive East. We are fine with dropping him at a West Seattle preschool/daycare/provider’s home or hosting at our own house. It would be great to have him join another similarly aged kid or two, as well. He’s a happy, easygoing boy who will be heading to Alki Elementary in Fall 2015 so it might be nice to find a future school buddy. I’m looking for core hours of 10AM-3PM; ideal hours are 9AM-4PM, but we are flexible. Pay rate depends on experience and situation. He still naps most days and we’d like to keep that up for as long as possible. Email at erin.weible@gmail.com with experience and availability. Thank you!

Dr. Chellis and her hygienists are excellent. She also did not push me to have proactive treatments. As for costs, I think she might be a little more expensive. Your best bet is to call three or four dentists to get an idea of the cost for a cleaning, etc.

Sue- short answer- (in my case) no, not aggressive. I go to Dr. Kae thanks to reviews here and also reviews of my co-workers- almost all of them go here.

I’ve been to a couple dentists in 13 years in Seattle (1 in cap hill and 1 downtown), and Dr. Kae’s office is great in comparison. the dentist in cap hill was always pressuring me to have expensive procedures (we must use lasers !!); even expensive diagnostic procedures. made me feel like the sky was falling (or my gums would disintegrate) if I didn’t get all this work done. Dr. Kae says my teeth are ‘great.’ I had to have one extra visit for periodontics/ (plaque scraping) to improve my gum health, but they are very laid back and I don’t feel like I need to try and defend myself against car-salesmen like tactics.

I haven’t had problems with the scheduling/ billing. usually the hygienist schedules my next visit while I’m in the chair. I once called to re-schedule an appt. and had no problem. they do require 24 hours notice.

I’m looking for a new dentist (like my current one, but he’s difficult to get to now that I don’t have a car), and I’ve read a lot of reviews for Dr. Kae. The reviews are generally great for the dr. and the hygienists, but I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews regarding the office manager in terms of billing and scheduling, to the point where it has made multiple people change dentists. Have any of you posting here had issues with the office staff like that?

Also, I’m curious if Dr. Kae is aggressive with proactive work. Most of the dentists I’ve been to in the Seattle area are always trying to talk me into crowns because of a “really big” filling that MIGHT crack and MIGHT cause problems, and I feel like I’m always being badgered into spending tons of $ because I MIGHT have an issue later. I don’t mind being informed and given options, but I’m not a fan of hard-sells and fear mongering.

Up until now the community have used it as a “playground” I’ve seen kites, parents practicing with their children, games and remote control airplanes being flown by dads and their excited kids.

If the Bar S Playground has been converted to the exclusive use of the little league shouldn’t the costs for it’s maintenance come from the little league association dues?

If I’m going to pay taxes on a park the community should be able to use it.

AdmiralJaneway, that is a very compelling video, and it makes a strong case for why labeling the specific ingredients in the food is so vital to a successful labeling law. I-522 will not, of course, tell you if corn or soy in foods is GE or not.

I should also add, however, that the video is way off in much of the information presented as fact. The US does not have the highest rates of cancer in the world. For all cancers, and specifically breast cancer, European countries have the highest cancer rates.

    http://www.wcrf.org/cancer_statistics/cancer_frequency.php

    http://www.wcrf.org/cancer_statistics/data_specific_cancers/breast_cancer_statistics.php

As for allergies, that information is distorted as well. The #1 food, by far, for inducing allergy is nuts. It doesn’t matter if you are in the US or Europe, the rates are about the same. Food allergies are increasing worldwide, not just in the US.

Interestingly, nut allergies are less common in Asia. There are some studies on allergies and hygiene, that seem very culturally based. It will be fascinating to find out more about this trend.

Regardless, there are no genetically engineered nuts.

    A short presentation on allergies:
