I love the ease of their website and they do one-hour.
I’ve gone in with questions and they have been able to assist me with exact cropping of a Christmas card photo, adjusted the background and let me see it before I had 125 prints printed.
Also gave me tips on using the slowest upload speed to get a higher quality photo when uploading to their website.

I know reading comprehension is difficult, so I’ll try to simplify once again. The reason their tax payment went up even tho the tax rate went down slightly is because they made a LOT more money- their income rose 399% (to simplify,that’s almost 4 times as much). And they pay millions in taxes because their income is millions of dollars. See, poor people can’t pay millions in taxes because they don’t make millions of dollars.

I’m sure many people already know this, but iron deficiency is also extremely common in menstruating women and adolescent girls. We lose a lot of iron once a month, and some of us have a harder time replenishing it. When I was 13, I got really sick right before winter break: incredibly fatigued, dizzy, fever, sore throat… just a mess. My doctor first feared it was pneumonia or mononucleosis, but it was actually just iron-deficiency anemia. I missed a week of school and basically just slept the entire time. It’s no joke. I still struggle with iron deficiency and low ferritin levels and have had to take prescription-strength iron supplements several times.
Other than, increased antibodies, a slightly enlarged thyroid, and some perimenopausal symptoms that I thought were completely normal and unavoidable, I did not have much in the way of symptoms of hypothyroidism. I had only insisted to my GP that I needed to see a specialist because of my family’s extensive history of thyroid disorders, with a couple of autoimmune disorders thrown in there. Despite my mimimal symptoms, the endocrinologist put me on cytomel and levoxyl, and voila!, perimenopausal symptoms eased dramatically. I had no idea that could be considered a thyroid issue. Best side effect ever! Anywhoo, in answer to your question WW, I don’t have an answer as I haven’t experienced any notable difference as a result of my adding Vit D supplements, but with the research increasingly indicating that vit D is critically important to sufferers of hypothroidism, and some of the statements above about how Vit D made huge improvements in some people’s energy, it’s certainly something that you should have your endo test.
I think I remember seeing on the blog that there was a big problem on the bridge during that time slot. The bridge may even have been closed. It’s possible that the guy thought that he could not get to his other, previously scheduled appointment without having to abruptly cut off his consultation with you. I’m just saying that he may have made the most courteous and professional choice he could under the circumstances. After all, he did squeeze you in at the last mimute to begin with, and he did call to cancel…
regarding the obion county fire, that county has eight fire departments, and they are all funded with taxes. faced with budget shortfalls and higher equipment costs, though, three of the rural departments decided to use this “subscription” model instead of raising property taxes.
it should be noted that the tax increase would be about the same as the yearly subscription.
umm, don’t tell anyone in obion county, but it’s still a tax, and it’s levied by the municipalities. it’s a tax you can opt out of, though, which the more libertarian citizens love, but which the fire chief dislikes. he was quoted as saying that it makes his job harder, because now 911 operators are kind of like cashiers, too.
they also tried to charge a $500 fee for putting out each fire, but that model caused a 50% drop in revenues.

The West Seattle Symphony is looking for more trained musicians. The Symphony (our top) orchestra is especially in need of another bassoon player, a French horn player, a percussionist, possibly another trumpet player–and, of course, string players, especially cellists!
Unfortunately (or serendipitously!), we are not in need of clarinets or flutes or trombones, not even a tuba!
Hmm, sounds like a “Stone Soup” story: If we only had a bassoon/viola/cello player . . . we could create an orchestra.”
Seriously, we have a great core of musicians, just need a few holes filled.
As to the less-experienced groups, the Symphonette and the String Ensemble, we’re doing great with over 40 young folks and a few adults sprinkled in, but we can always grow larger. We have a spot for any musician–beginning to advanced, young to antique–who’d like to give it a whirl. FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES THREE THROUGH TWELVE, IT’S FREE!!

Hi Maria, I pretty much agree with what others have said here, but I wanted to mention I think it’s important to establish a comfortable working relationship with clients, and reassure them. People want someone in their house they can trust, who understands their routines. I don’t think there is a job much more intimate than being a housekeeper. You end up knowing A LOT about who those people are, their physical health, their habits, interests, fears, relationship and family issues, etc. and if they’re home when you’re working, they’re also seeing you grunting and sweating and crawling around. Everyone pretends not to, but everyone sees. Aside from worrying about whether the housekeeper is going to steal, slack off on the job, or break their stuff (and you can’t take any of that personally cuz it’s natural for them to feel that way) it’s important to convey, probably more in how you act than in what you say, that you will protect their privacy, safety, comfort, and emotional space. It’s way different cleaning for private residential clients than it is through an agency, hotel, or office building, in my experience, because there is no anonymity for anyone, but you still kind of have to pretend there is, and walk this line of being friendly but keeping it professional.
Hubby can no longer wear these as the medicine for brain cancer has put
weight on him so he wants to pass them on to someone that can use them.

I guess I’m just writing in to introduce the possibility that he had a good reason, I know he takes his job seriously and is good to work with.
Whatever is happening with the economy, the good gardeners all have waiting lists and incredibly busy schedules – they may not be at home, waiting for the phone to ring, as you might imagine!
(Still, you are busy too and it’s very frustrating to have a meeting cancelled, I don’t mean to discount that feeling.)

i believe that workers deserve a fair wage for the work they do…
i believe that if you sign on for a 40hr/wk job that even if you are a salaried employee you should be paid overtime for working over 40 hours.
i believe that when you take your paycheck home you should be able to pay for a roof over your head, food on your table, healthcare and education.
I believe that if retirement benefits including healthcare were part of your employment package.. your employer should not be able to “reorganize” without fulling funding the retirement you earned.
i believe that the most productive workforce on the face of the earth should be paid for that productivity…
no.. we are not all captains of industry.. but there is no reason captains of industry should be paid so much more than the support staff that makes them successful.

Ellenater- Do you mind elaborating on the connection between Vit D deficiency and thyriod issues? I have hypothyroidism so in general I have an enlarged thyroid (although lately it seems to be getting bigger.) I also have the low energy, lots of sleeping, etc. etc. stuff that comes along with hypothyriodism. Any insight you can provide would be much appreciated. :-)
We pay $100 every two weeks for “roughly” 4-5 hours of work. Word of mouth is your best marketing plan. You just need to get that first couple of clients, so maybe Craigslist to start.
Maria: I don’t know for sure what kind of license or bond you are talking about. I have never heard of a specific license for “housekeeper,” nor have I heard of any bonding requirement. (Maybe I’ve just never hired anyone who had those things.) I do think it’s important to have a general business license and insurance if you are working as an independent contractor. If that’s what you mean, then I think the insurance in particular might increase what you could charge.
As for advertising (and I think it’s abbreviated “ad,” not “add”), I have only ever hired housekeepers based on word of mouth recommendations or recommendations from other people on this forum. I particularly don’t like, or respond to, flyers that people leave on my doorstep. If I wasn’t able to find someone my usual way, I would probably go next to online ads, such as a sponsorship on a blog like this one, or a webpage. I would bet that newspaper ads don’t reach people the way they used to. Craigslist ads for in-home services make me nervous. There’s such a wide variety of people advertising there, you never know what you might be getting.
I don’t necessarily know what a fair rate is — I assume it varies a lot, but I really don’t know. My general idea of fair rates for a good housekeeper is anywhere from $15 to $25 per hour.
I am interested to hear what other people say!

I just read a prior story from a few weeks ago about a door to door security salesman in Highland Park…I commented there, but felt the need to post this in the discussion “room” to make sure people see it.
Obviously, I can’t speak about all the people who are out in the neighborhood knocking on doors, but wanted to assure my neighbors that Nathan from Northstar Security is not a scammer (he’s the clipboard guy in Highland Park). I am also VERY weary of any door to door solicitors and am not a fan AT ALL of door to door sales tactics…especially for security systems because I’ve read about scams before. But, I felt compelled to get on here and let everyone know that this person from this particular company IS legit. We have been wanting a security system for a while (12th Ave. in Highland Park) and we ended up taking him up on the offer (not like us) after meeting for over an hour and knowing that our neighbors already had one of their systems and just had it updated the other day. I am not for one second saying you should let your guard down because one person is actually doing what they say they are, so please don’t miss understand. Nor am I saying go buy a security system from Northstar, that’s your deal. I simply wanted to clarify that Nathan from Northstar is VERY nice, VERY professional, VERY accommodating, wore a uniform and badge and WAS NOT pushy AT ALL! If you ask to take his picture, get ready for a big smile and a thumbs up. We even chatted about how your are screwed in this neighborhood if you piss someone off or freak them out because of the WS Blog (love you guys!). He had read the original story and figured it was about him since it referenced 12th Ave in HP. He also understands that people are initially on guard, as they should be.
Anyway, they installed our system that night and we couldn’t be happier so far (installation guy was great too). Obviously, I’ll let ya know if that changes, but in THIS case, I’m really glad I listened to my gut and didn’t just automatically turn him away (and god forbid call the cops on him…which is totally something I would do…that would have sucked because he really is a nice guy!).

Head west on Hwy 20 and drive on to Whidbey Island via the Deception Pass Bridge–but first stop on the north shore of Deception Pass State Park for a quick hike to explore the incredible scenery and beaches. Both make for longish but very entertaining day trips.
Personally, I think I’m going to recruit the 11 yo to help me can my surplus of green tomatoes on Friday, and head to the pumpkin patch this weekend.

I can say from experience that Vit. D deficiency is no picnic. It has made a mess out of my health and contributed to a bunch of hormone and thyroid stuff, including a fairly large goiter. I take 6,000 IU daily and it makes all the difference in the world. It literally is like night and day–I am a completely different person.
I do agree that you should get your blood-work done. It’s not something you should just assume!

@dawsonct – please don’t slam people or assume they’re eating incorrectly if they have low Vit D. I live and work on Alki and spent tons of time outside this summer. I eat lots of mushrooms, leafy veggies, salmon and shrimp too. This really is a problem for women (maybe men too) living in the NW. This problem didn’t start for me until I moved here (from Chicago and NC where there are longer summers and more year-round sun). Saying we’re turning to a pill supplement as the easy way out is deeply insulting. My doctor knows what I need better than you.
