Looking for someplace different to take 10-12 yr olds this Friday when school is out for the day. Tired of the zoo, and aquarium and have gone to all the museums multiple times.

It’s pumpkin time!! I’d take kids to grab their pumpkins at the p-patch. It’d be a great opportunity to avoid the weekend crowds, possibly carve your pumkins, or shop for costumes.

There is a place on 6th Ave. (Just a couple blocks east of Home Depot) that has classes in trapeze! I have been wanting to take my kids there for awhile but have not gotten an opportunity. It’s not free (or even that cheap) but it would be an exciting way to spend the afternoon! It is called Emerald City Trapeze. Here’s a link: http://emeraldcitytrapeze.com/#index

What about some further afield options?

To the south: Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge and Nisqually Reach Visitor’s Center offer prime wildlife viewing, some great (but easy) trails, and nice exhibits. http://www.fws.gov/Nisqually/ and http://www.nisquallyestuary.org/ for more info. If you head down that way and are even the tiniest bit interested in crafting, make a stop at Shipwreck Beads to round out the day: http://www.shipwreckbeads.com/.

To the north: Drive up to Skagit County, get off I-5 at Conway, follow Fir Island Road and Best Road through the Skagit Flats and enjoy some agri-tourism at the roadside farm stands. (There’s a great pumpkin patch at Schuh Farms on hwy 536 just NW of Mt. Vernon, too; http://www.pugetsoundfresh.org/farm_profile.asp?farmID=221). Head west on Hwy 20 and drive on to Whidbey Island via the Deception Pass Bridge–but first stop on the north shore of Deception Pass State Park for a quick hike to explore the incredible scenery and beaches. (Park at Bowman Bay) Meander your way through Whidbey and ride the ferry back to Mukilteo.

Both make for longish but very entertaining day trips.

Personally, I think I’m going to recruit the 11 yo to help me can my surplus of green tomatoes on Friday, and head to the pumpkin patch this weekend.

Here’s a late addition, from a listing sent to us for the calendar (though it’s a little ways outside West Seattle):

    >>,October 8th 12 noon- 8 pm Free! 1010 South Bailey Street in Georgetown. Join us right here at the Seattle Drum School Georgetown Branch for our fall open house.

We have a great line up for the entire day. The kids are out of public school so stop on by! Georgetown Music Store will be here all day. They will have guitars, bass, drums, woodwinds, brass, and much more for kids and adults to try out. Also Hammond Ashley Violins will have violins, viola, cello, and basses. We will also be offering free 10min mini lessons on any instrument all day long!

Join us for some great music, snacks, and of course get your 5 cent t-shirt while supplies last. (A five cent value.)<<

We went to The Burke Museum and took a nice bike ride along the Burke Gilman Trail. Tomorrow we will drive to Nisqually.
