Carson, I’m not saying all Boston firefighters are good (hell, I’m not even Irish :-) I’m just saying that the firemen I happened to meet in Boston, drunk or high or sober, would have pissed on anyone who told them to let a fire burn and then put out the fire.

Drug and alcohol testing? I’m all for it — don’t know the situation in Boston, but do know that the baseball players’ union agreed to anonymous testing to see the magnitude of the problem and, strangely, suddenly, the results — with names — were “leaked.” It makes one wonder about the sanctity of agreements, doesn’t it?

It might surprise you that I actually have problems with unions as well — many union leaders were corrupted, especially in the 80’s when they lept in bed with the R’s and suddenly dressed in $5000 suits and took seats on the boards of corporations.

End of thread-jacking ramble. Back to corrupting youth :-)

Here’s some more facts from IRS about income disparity…

I’m so confused (get JanS back in here please). How on earth can their tax rates go DOWN from 17.17 percent to 16.62 percent yet they paid more in taxes – 57 MILLION vs 45 MILLION? I thought tax cuts resulted in lower revenues every time? And only 57 million in taxes – the jerks!

“In a single year, between 2006 and 2007, the income of those top 400 taxpayers rose by 31 percent — from an average of $263.3 million to an average of $344.8 million per year. Meanwhile, Johnston writes, “Their effective income tax rate fell to 16.62 percent, down more than half a percentage point from 17.17 percent in 2006”

so.. you think a fire department should stand by and watch the house of a man who forgot to pay his fire subscription burn to the ground to make a point..

even though the man had money in hand and was willing to pay it?

i suppose you think anyone who can’t afford modern medicine should die too…

    that will teach them :(

what i want to know is what it would take to teach you?

I know reading comprehension is difficult, so I’ll try to simplify once again. The reason their tax payment went up even tho the tax rate went down slightly is because they made a LOT more money- their income rose 399% (to simplify, that’s almost 4 times as much). And they pay millions in taxes because their income is millions of dollars. See, poor people can’t pay millions in taxes because they don’t make millions of dollars.

    Still confused?

EXACTLY! Lower rates CAN AND DO result in HIGHER collections! Supply side at work – in an article from a well known Libtard!

Welcome to the club dobro! Smitty/dobro 2012!

Smitty… the operative word there is CAN…but not always. Oh, if things were only that easy. Now…why did you want me to jump in there? Again…they made more money…it’s always about the almighty dollar…and they didn’t pass it on to anyone else, I’m betting..as in…hiring people…you know…employing the underlings? who make the money for them?

You really don’t get it, do you? The reason these guys made LOTS more money is because they’re STEALING it from everyone else. Their tax rate went down 1.5%- their income rate went up 399%- and, to you, that means supply side economics works? Yeah, for rich conscience-free slime balls which, apparently, you aspire to become.

    Dobro…

    smitty gets it just fine.

he is simply trying to confuse the issue for others.

when you follow the basis philosophy that money is the only language that matters… anyone who doesn’t earn big bucks is a loser and deserves anything that happens to them.

the only problem with that philosophy is that there is always a bigger and faster shark out there thinking your nest egg looks like a tasty snack…

winner to loser in one tasty gulp…

    ask the baby boomer generation..

    the most educated in history…

just how slippery that slide can be.

the lucky ones exist on the bottom tier of that “rich” scale…

little more than one paycheck away from losing everything we have worked for

with our retirement invested into the gambling syndicate called the stock market

    only in American…..

does a good education, good connections, talent and hard work pay off so well:(

did i say we are the lucky ones?

    we are.

smitty: yeah. the top side got supplied, but the jobs and wealth haven’t trickled down. it appears that the money got stuck at the top.

who would have suspected rich people would be greedy, too?

we’re a bit sick of supplying your side.

You guys sound jealous. Good old class warfare. I am certain there are a few people who inherited fortunes who are the stereotypical Rich fatcats that are so hated by progressives. But most are not. Spreading the wealth around through government is the wrong policy. Helping people out is a good thing but there has to be limits.

You business owners, you work hard don’t you. You are the engine that drives this country. Whether large or small, you work your butts off. Do you like getting demonized by non business owners who think you owe them a living and top wages, pensions and healthcare? Did they help you out with the start up fees? Do you like Mayor McSchwinn making it more difficult for people to park affordably therefore ensuring less people visiting your shop? Do you like having to pay for more government when revenues are down ? Do you like having to foot the bill for governments excess spending and waste? And did you cause this? No.

It is the business owner that hires people. They risk a lot and currently are treated like crap locally and federally by this administration. AND if Congress doesn’t come to its senses the OBAMA tax increase at the end of the year will affect not only the wealthy but will affect the lowest tax brackets too. $1100.00 is more than some can afford.

You may laugh at Supply Side but Obamanomics is hindering the confidence in growth of businesses and unfortunately is keeping unemployment high. (and he said unemployment wouldn’t go past 8% with the stimulus – No wonder his approval rating is near the previous Prez).

With tax hikes looming and worries about inflation this congress and President are making things much worse. They have been irresponsible in spending so much. (Why was it bad when W did it but O doing it is OK?). Even JFK used tax cuts to raise revenue. My My. Mellon got it right, Hoover and his tax cuts and tariffs got it wrong.

Ben Franklin was a wise man in my opinion. Here are a couple of quotes: Benjamin Franklin quotes:

… as all history informs us, there has been in every State & Kingdom a constant kind of warfare between the governing & governed: the one striving to obtain more for its support, and the other to pay less. And this has alone occasioned great convulsions, actual civil wars, ending either in dethroning of the Princes, or enslaving of the people. Generally indeed the ruling power carries its point, the revenues of princes constantly increasing, and we see that they are never satisfied, but always in want of more. The more the people are discontented with the oppression of taxes; the greater need the prince has of money to distribute among his partisans and pay the troops that are to suppress all resistance, and enable him to plunder at pleasure. There is scarce a king in a hundred who would not, if he could, follow the example of Pharaoh, get first all the peoples money, then all their lands, and then make them and their children servants for ever …

    or

When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.

Almost 50% do not pay Federal taxes these days. Entitlements going broke. Debt rising. Healthcare premiums skyrocketing. If you were a business owner, would you be spending and investing a lot right now knowing that your costs are going to increase in the next year? Hey congress, how about a budget? Oh wait, you Democrats don’t want your constituents to see how much you are spending. Why is it when elections roll around Democrats care about spending?

By the way, Supply side doesn’t work when congress keeps spending and spending and spending. Limited is a word not found often enough in DC or Olympia or even locally.

Seems government is being greedy and I don’t want it to spread the wealth because that wealth comes from the people.

In the end, do you want to pay off Rossi’s credit card or Murray’s? You know Rossi’s balance will be much smaller. Smear him all you want but DC is out of control and Murray has been part of the porkulus problem for 18 years.

no, no, and no. either you don’t understand the tax structure, or you’re lying.

and if there are only a few rich fatcats by birth, then why the fuss over the inheritance tax? it only affects estates of what – $3 million or more? (and the tax is zero this year, by the way.)

when obama talks about the top 2%, he’s not talking about you. you’ll never be in the top 2%. neither will anyone reading this thread. small business owners average $80,000 – $140,000 per year in income. (and don’t start that stupid revenue-versus-income b.s. we’re talking about income tax.)

    acknowledge the numbers, rich:

the top 10% own 90% of the nation’s wealth.

yes, the top 10% pay 60-70% of the nation’s taxes. they have 60-70% of the nation’s income. your inference that they should pay only 10% of the nation’s taxes suggests you have no understanding of the numbers or of taxation. even if there was a flat tax, they would still pay 60-70% of the nation’s taxes.

almost 50% of the country is living below the poverty line. it’s why most of them pay no taxes. with the exception of exxon/mobil, of course. they also paid no taxes last year.

w and the republican congress kept the wars and the tax cuts off of the budget. obama put them back in, adding to the deficit and debt. who’s more “fiscally responsible?”

tax rates – and tax receipts – are lower than they have been in 200 years. obama has raised no tax. yet. wall street’s nervous about taxes, so they’re withholding investment? that speaks volumes. if there was ever a time for the rich to take advantage of low taxes and government incentive, it was after obama took office. they didn’t. why? greed. they’re hoarding wealth, and they don’t give a flying shit about creating one single job. as a matter of fact, i challenge you to prove that any tax cut has ever created any job. anywhere.

so the only conclusion i can draw is they don’t care about their country enough to invest in it.

    class warfare? okay.

this growing anger toward the extremely wealthy and corporations among progressives and liberals is what it looks like when you squeeze people to the point where they want to start oiling up the guillotines again. and we understand that it isn’t the government that’s been doing the squeezing. if and when the teabaggers ever figure that out, taxes will be the least of the rich folks’ worries.

instead you poor saps are carrying water for people who wouldn’t bother to piss on you if you were on fire on the sidewalk.

    redblack really said it all…

“instead you poor saps are carrying water for people who wouldn’t bother to piss on you if you were on fire on the sidewalk. “

but i will add a comment made in reference to the fact that most of America’s charity goes overseas and not to the growing population of poor in the United States…

paraphrased.. it went something like this.. it’s easy to send a check or a shipment overseas since it’s all about some anonymous other… to do charitable work in the US you have to actually acknowledge the poverty of those who surround you.

From Rich…” No wonder his approval rating is near the previous Prez).”

This demonstration of math ability is telling about the right-wing way of thinking…Obama currently at 43% approval according to Rassmussen

    http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/obama_administration/daily_presidential_tracking_poll

GW Bush, the previous president, final rating according to a CBS poll…22%

    http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/01/16/opinion/polls/main4728399.shtml

So, according to Rich, 47 is almost 22. you can see why some of those other figures don’t quite add up.

So, if I hear the Dino Devotees right, screwing with the minimum wage is OK? Washington should be ashamed of having a minimum wage that is the highest in the nation? People who work at the bottom have no right to be able to exist on their wages?

Come on now, let’s hear it! Tell me how your kids and grandkids should work for $5 bucks and hour because it is so hard to master the intricacies of a deep-fat fryer.

from the NYT…a fairly simple article, but points out how important this election is. And look see who Mr. Rossi calls on…Mitch McConnell m(ick!), and John Cornyn (double ick!!).

I did not watch the debate live, but have watched the video. I think many people wanted answers. They want to know what he’s going to do, since he has pledged to not bring any earmarks back to WA State. People want to know where he stands, they want specifics, and all he can tout is “I’m not Patty Murray”. He answered nothing that was asked of him. I still want to know how he is going to make up the money that will be needed if the tax cuts for the “rich” stay in place. I’m betting he doesn’t really have an answer to that :( It certainly ain’t gonna come from all the jobs that are supposedly going to be created. So far that hasn’t happened – as one commenter pointed out, the rich have turned out to be greedy, too, keeping their money very close to themselves.

I run a small business and my taxes WENT DOWN after the Dems took over. The Republicans don’t give a damn about small business and their tax burdens. They are all for big business. And as for fiscal responsibility?????? They did not even try when in power. They started two wars we should not have been in, they cooked the books and put the debt on our children. That is not fiscal responsibility. How is it that memory is so short people can’t remember two years ago when the financial crisis hit and the Republicans were the ones pushing for the bailout?????????????
