I like Burien! I’d always rather go to that Trader Joe’s, the post office always has parking, and their little downtown area is cute. It’s a good place to visit when you need to run several different types of errands that are necessary but not fun.

That should be their city slogan. Heh.

Yeah, sounds like it was stripped.

It’s not to unusual for people to have a “quick-release” front hub, so they can pop the wheel off and take it with them, to at least prevent somebody from cutting the lock, and then riding the bike away.

Although, perhaps the owner of the bike had previously been a theft victim, perhaps even by a very skilled thief that was actually able to ride off on their bike minus the front wheel, and now they take even more extra precautions. ;-)

Hey all, we saw a very large mangy looking coyote on our block this morning around Noon. We live near 37th and Kenyon, quite far from a greenbelt. He emerged out of an alley way and was aimlessly walking in the street. Our understanding is that animal control does not respond to coyotes. Anyone know if this is correct? Just in case I wanted to notify people here.

I get the same reaction from people. I’m willing to drive anywhere that I need/want to get to, but to get people to come to West Seattle can be a challenge. And yet, with my energy work practice, most of my clients are NOT from West Seattle, and yet they come without problem time and time again. <shrug>

PangolinPie, we actually sound a lot alike – I’m an eccentric, liberal, 50 year old tie-dye wearing, alternative practitioner who kills time wandering the aisles of PCC when I’m bored. :) I’d love to get together sometime, as one can always use some more friends! Get in touch if you’d like at butterflybalance at gmail (and anyone else who’d like to join in).

I’ve lived here for about a year and a half now, and I have to say, I love W. Seattle. But it seems so hard to get my friends from other parts of town to drive out and visit. Is it just me? Seems like people see WS as a distant destination (and for those who don’t have cars and have to take a bus, I get how much of a hassle it can be to get here).

I wonder sometimes if I just need to make more friends out here…I sense that there are probably a lot of people like me here; 40s-50s, liberal, professional, maybe a little quirky/artsy/old hippie, whose idea of a good time is visiting a gallery or the farmer’s market, or just hanging out drinking wine, ordering a pizza and watching a movie. But it’s hard to meet folks, sometimes. Or, again, maybe it’s just me. Not looking for a relationship-type thing; that I have already — just some like-minded folks who want to chill without having to trek the apparently mind-blowing distance from the mainland. :)

Just a thought: as Benny is equally anxious/crying/miserable whether he is indoors or out, why not keep him in where he’s at least safe? In addition to the obvious dangers (cars, dogs, raccoons, coyotes, ferals, poison) there are a lot of people who are not cat lovers who might regard his behavior as a nuisance, and take action to deter – or eliminate – his visits. There must be a better solution than letting him roam this high risk area.

Mike and others recommended a cat run, which is a great idea. There is another thread on the WSB right now talking about MMJ for pets. Seriously, this sounds like a good idea as Benny has some obvious anxiety issues. Lena is a local holistic vet who posts on the WSB. She might have some suggestions for you. You sound like a caring cat mom, and I know you’ve tried a lot of things, but please don’t give up on trying safer options.

Im sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty. Mine will turn 14 at the beginning of the year. Crazy how time flies.

I dont know if you know who I am but I run the Service Dog Academy. I have been teaching pet dog classes since 2008 here in West Seattle. Since 2009 I have been teaching diabetic alert and experimental alert dog classes. Im actually closing down my pet location at the end of the year to focus strictly on diabetic alert dog training.

Id definitely be interested in this meter. My dog is a trained diabetic alert dog who alerts to both low and high blood sugars. He has alerted on several occasions when I was in a normal range but I would swear he is picking up on my changes in my cat. The couple times this has happened has been right before she has had to go to the vet for a UTI. Usually what proceeds the UTI diagnosis is a reduction in daily food volume – which as you know can result in low blood sugars.

Obviously my cat doesnt have diabetes but it sure would be an interesting experiment to see if those strange alerts really do coincide with a low blood sugar for her.

Pam, no doubt you love Benny and are sincere, but I would nominate you for Typo (Freudian slip?) of the Year:

“His previous owners had to find a home for him because their new corgi had tried to kill me.”

I know you caught the typo, but I just wanted you to know I got a kick out of it.

Please tell Benny we wish him the very best.

HuffPo has an article with this video plus a slideshow from ‘Enhance the UK’. The H-P article notes that our very own Nordies has been using models with disabilities for over 20 years.

Just received an envelope from an official looking business form saying it was the FINAL NOTICE. It said I owed $295. It says it is from the LABOR STANDARDS COMPLIANCE OFFICE from the BUSINESS COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT. There is a Tacoma Address.

Check out what is says in the FINE PRINT … THIS IS NOT A BILL. THIS IS A SOLICITATION YOU ARE UNDER NO OBLIGATION TO PAY THE AMOUNT STATED ABOVE UNLESS YOU ACCEPT THIS OFFER. THIS PRODUCT OR SERVICE HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED OR ENDORSED BY ANY GOVERNMENT AGENCY AND THIS OFFER IS NOT BEING MADE BY ANY AGENCY OF THE GOVERNMENT.

Yes indeed. All the L&I information is free from the government.

Scam alert! An unknown entity, the “Labor Standards Compliance Office”, is trying to sell labor posters with letters that look like bills

Because the State and City post business addresses which are easily accessible through the web, it is easy for scam artists to take advantage of certain people.

I thoroughly dislike this type of deception.

I had a friend that got touched by a priest in exchange for a Snickers bar. I think it is just awful that those things are advertised everywhere and obviously promote child rape and prostitution.

Then why not ban all flashing lights? On police cars, fire trucks, stop lights, RR crossings…

    Really?

I’m going to retain my flashing light on my bike. The very fact that people are pissing and moaning about it tells me that it’s working. People are seeing me. As to the whole distance thing, if you are having trouble with judging distances perhaps you should slow down and become the master of your vehicle and, while you’re at it, of yourself. If that’s too hard for drivers then perhaps they should turn in their licenses.

As to the brightness; you can’t tell me that the little light, even a bright one, can compete with some of the xenon powerhouses that are on cars nowadays, flashing or not.

in fact, *some* people are disoriented by flashing lights, esp. if a) it is fully dark, b) the light is bright, and c) the light is aimed too high. Just because one person isn’t bothered by a flashing light doesn’t mean no one else is. Our brains are individual and don’t function the same way from person to person.

Speaking of which, bright flashing lights can trigger photosensitive epilepsy, even in person’s who have never experienced epilepsy before. Any legislation should address this issue.

Here’s what the Seattle Department of Transportation has in the Neighborhood Traffic Operations section:

“How do I turn left at a traffic circle?

State Law does not distinguish between a traffic circle and a larger roundabout. Consequently, a driver turning left at a neighborhood traffic circle must proceed counterclockwise around the traffic circle. However, we recognize that there are instances when drivers may need to turn left before a traffic circle, such as when cars park too closely to the right side of a circle or when a driver can’t maneuver a larger vehicle around to the right. Turning left in front of a traffic circle in those instances can be safely performed if the driver exercises reasonable care and yields to pedestrians, bicyclists, and oncoming traffic.”

I’m coming to believe the best thing is not to expect other drivers to follow the guideline/regulation and just see what happens instead. Since that involves slowing down to a crawl I guess the traffic circle is accomplishing its purpose.

My vote is bricks and concrete debris from the buildings destroyed in the 1889 fire.

And yes, Jan, they do test boring holes over the span to see what they’ll encounter. Obviously, this thing wasn’t encountered in the test borings. The soils they encountered in the borings were pretty consistent with what they expected for this area and considering they tore down many of the slopes in downtown and dumped the spoils into the flats… But you knew all that. :-)

Count me as a pro-flashing light driver FWIW. They are annoying, and annoying things make me slow down and be more alert.

I have a 2.5 year old who loves to sleep late. I have to be at work on the East Side by 9 am most mornings, which means I have to get him up by 7:30 and to daycare by 8 am. This results in majorly tough mornings as he hates getting up and is grumpy all through the process. I’m wondering if anyone would be interested in providing morning support which would consist of hanging out at our house from 8 am until my son wakes up around 9-9:30. Then getting him dressed, fed, and driving him to school. I go on maternity leave mid-April so it would be from now until mid-April unless his schedule somehow changes and he starts waking up earlier. If you or someone you know might be interested, please contact me at aarbury@live.com
