OK, this post has two parts. First is in regard to a badly injured raccoon observed on the SE trail of Roxhill Park. It’s tail has been torn/bitten almost completely off, leaving a raw wound. Last seen taking refuge in a tall conifer. Is there anyone who will come out and attempt to trap injured wild animals? I know some places like Sarvey will take them if delivered, but don’t know if help is available for capturing the animal.

Second is in regard to a kitty who has been hanging around the same area for several weeks now. He’s wildly vocal, desperate for attention, following everyone he meets, and trying to get shelter by going to the doors of buildings nearby and scratching and howling. He was hanging around the raccoon tree this morning, and was also out at the Barton bus hub by the street. At this rate, he’ll be dead very soon. He has a tag stating that his name is Bennie. From what I understand, the owner was called last week, as Bennie’s behavior is that of an animal lost and in distress. The owner blew it off, saying that he likes to “take trips”. Funny, he doesn’t look that happy to me, especially in below-freezing temps and rain.

To the owner: Someone just might mistake him for homeless and actually give him a good, caring home. He’s a sweet guy, and deserves better care.

as far as the raccoon is concerned I can get it but will it will be taken to Seattle animal control.

As far as the cat in concerned, I believe you have stated before you do not have a car right?

Well call animal control, tell the story and see what they say.

It can be called abandonment or even neglect, I am just not sure what it would fall under.

Hell just call me, I can take care it

    Dear FCAT,

I called and left you a message that I am Benny’s owner and will more than happy to come pick him up!

There is a long history with Benny. I have had him for one year now. His previous owners had to find a home for him because their new corgi had tried to kill me.

He is an amazing animal and I adore him. He is miserable being confined to the home. I had an animal communicator work with him because of this. In exchange for being outdoors, Benny agreed to leave his collar on and to be back home in the evening.

Lately he has been going to different house and to the Day Star Retirement place across from the Westwood Village and vocalizing and appearing to be in distress. People have called me and I have come to pick him up if he is still there. Most of the time he just heads home.

I am not blowing off about the fact that he likes to take trips over to the park. I love Benny with all my heart and know his life will be miserable if he is confined to the house. He was before I had him.

If you think you can be a better owner than I am, you will have exactly the same problem with him!

I am correcting some words in my note just posted. “….because their new corgi tried to kill me.” should read kill him.

“….going to different house..” should read different houses.

pam m. have you considered the feasibility of an outdoor “cat run”?

Try contacting Furry Faces Foundation; http://www.furryfacesfoundation.org/contact.html Their Leader could give you some pointers on how to build one.

HI Pam, I do not have Benny, but thank you very much for explaining your situation. I totally RESPECT what you are saying. It sounds like have done all you can do, it is up to him.

You and I both know that he is going to do what he wants and sadly if Benny gets killed, well sad to say that is the consequences.

As for the cat run, well not knowing if you rent or not, (if you rent) you could NOT build a cat run. If you do own, some homes just can’t accommodate a cat run. I get that. So those are NOT always the answer.

I have outdoor cats, but I deal with the threat of something happening every day.

You are a great cat owner, can’t ask for more than that:)

Now lets focus on the injured raccoon.

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for contacting me. I have considered the cat run and spoke to some folks about it. I’d not heard of furryfacesfoundation.org but will check this out.

To the lady who has Benny. Please respect the fact that I have done all I can do for him and let him out so he can come home to me. Thank you.

No one “has” Benny – not that I know of, anyway. We haven’t seen him since yesterday, so if he’s not with you – who knows? He tricked his way inside a building yesterday, and was desperately searching for hiding places under the building as well. I hope he’s not trapped somewhere.

The raccoon has disappeared as well. Maybe they’re together.

    Anonyme,

Were the buildings you mentioned at Day Star?

Bless you HH of f.c.a.t. for looking out for West Seattle’s furry friends. I hope Benny gets his little butt home safely and soon. As for the raccoon I know the males will bight and castrate each other. I have seen the same thing done many times when I lived in Oregon in the boonies. They do often survive but suffer more from social exile at that point. I hope he’s okay too. Again, hats off to HH of fcat. Always in ad

    miration of your dedication.

Pam, no doubt you love Benny and are sincere, but I would nominate you for Typo (Freudian slip?) of the Year:

“His previous owners had to find a home for him because their new corgi had tried to kill me.”

I know you caught the typo, but I just wanted you to know I got a kick out of it.

Please tell Benny we wish him the very best.

Hello to all concerned about Benny. He is home once again with me. Thank you for your concerns. Benny isn’t lost, despite the vocalizations and frantic behavior. He wants attention and he likes being around people. The park is his favorite place to go and I wish I could persuade him to avoid this area but so far I’ve had no luck doing that.

    Sonoma, yes.

“His previous owners had to find a home for him because their new corgi had tried to kill me.”

    BEST LINE EVER.

Just a thought: as Benny is equally anxious/crying/miserable whether he is indoors or out, why not keep him in where he’s at least safe? In addition to the obvious dangers (cars, dogs, raccoons, coyotes, ferals, poison) there are a lot of people who are not cat lovers who might regard his behavior as a nuisance, and take action to deter – or eliminate – his visits. There must be a better solution than letting him roam this high risk area.

Mike and others recommended a cat run, which is a great idea. There is another thread on the WSB right now talking about MMJ for pets. Seriously, this sounds like a good idea as Benny has some obvious anxiety issues. Lena is a local holistic vet who posts on the WSB. She might have some suggestions for you. You sound like a caring cat mom, and I know you’ve tried a lot of things, but please don’t give up on trying safer options.

    @anonyme,

I talked with her, she truly has. She knows the risks.

Lena is a holistic vet not a Behaviorist BIG difference.

As for MMJ, until more studies on done on animals, if there is no where to get it legally for animals it would NOT be a wise decision for her and the cat.

I gave her other suggestions. Cat runs are NOT cheap please respect that not everyone has money to be building one. Again he would be locked up and he would be miserable.

I again I will vouch that she has done what she can.

Hi Pam Morgan, please feel fee to email or call about a cat enclosure. There are ways to provide one at a very reasonable price. …as little as $100. Would also be happy to discuss options with you. Furryfaces@hotmail.com or 321-4729

FYI for those concerned about Benny.

He is now living out in North Bend on a large farm with a man who very much wanted a cat. His cat had recently died and he had advertised on Barn cats R Us only last night. Now Benny is living with that kind man and at last message, Benny was sitting next to him on the sofa!

Thanks for the update, pam m!

Sounds like it was one of those “meant to be” situations.
