In reply to: Got Seasonal Allergies?!?!?!
magMemberThe nasal steroid sprays are very helpful with allergies, but must be used routinely – daily – to be of any benefit. I use Nasacort AQ (prescription) in addition to the NeilMed system. There are many options out there.
Sinus rinsing cleans out the offending allergens and mucus and calms down inflammation, which helps people feel better. Symptoms will eventually come back when you breathe in more allergens, this is true. Which is why you do the rinsing routinely, and try to avoid offending allergens when possible.
To avoid gagging with the NeilMed system, you must keep your head facing down into the sink to keep the fluid from going down the back of your throat. If done correctly, the fluid goes in one nostril and comes out the same way, or out the other nostril. Some fluid may go down the back of your throat, but not enough to cause gagging. If you are really congested, and the fluid cannot flow freely into your nose, it does not work very well. Never force the fluid into your nose.
I am a big believer in sinus rinsing, as is everyone in my family (and beyond!) now. Besides being useful with allergies, we have found that it helps prevent colds, and if we do get a cold, the duration is shorter and we’re less prone to getting sinus infections, too.

ShibaguyzMemberHer trying to hug our Shibas like she does your big dog was hilarious! The fact is, I can full on take a nap using Apollo as a pillow and he won’t move. Atlas, on the other hand, thinks you want to play when you do that and he would likely have liked her until she was soaked. He LOVES that kind of attention.
You’re right to teach her not to do that though… MOST dogs aren’t so good with that. LOL
We will, as always, be there again this Sunday. The fact is that we’ve been going there for so long now that we’re friends with a lot of the vendors and have visited a few of their farms so we feel like it’s a social thing for us as much as our regular shopping day.
Yes, we get anywhere from 80 to 95% of our groceries from there, but it’s also about seeing our friends, meeting new folks and having fun. The musicians are fun to sit and listen to and the craft vendors always have SOMETHING that pulls un into an impulse purchase or two.
Say hey if any of you see us out there!!

ShibaguyzMemberAgain, this comes down to attending planning meetings, filing concerns and complaints with those proposed land use signs and voting for expansions to the roads and transit programs.
Also, it helps to vote for officials who understand those concerns and help pass legislation accordingly.
But, as was shown earlier in this thread, it is often those who are crying out the loudest who are the least motivated, likely or have the time and/or energy to take the necessary steps to get these jobs done.
And face it folks, urban sprawl has come to West Seattle. I know it seems like another dimension over here from the downtown life, but it is still part of Seattle. Heck, we moved here because of that very fact that it feels like we are miles away from the city. We loved living in and around downtown but this was like heaven for us to be able to get out of the general din every day.
It’s a nice place to live and people like us are going to move here and buy townhouses and build new construction. How do you think the home you are living in right now got here?? Who was on that property before you? Who owned it then? How did they feel about the neighborhood when the house you are sitting in right now was built?
Oh, and another reason we moved here was because this IS where my partner works and I was moving my job to downtown. We were trying to find something more commute friendly where we could get around easily and not have to purchase a second gas burning car.

ShibaguyzMemberI think the most amazing thing about some of the comments in these discussion forums is when people try to stir things up by making outrageous comments based on little or no facts surrounding the original conversation.
I have stated my point SEVERAL different times throughout this thread and there seem to be a couple of folks who have missed the point. Oh well… when you are dealing with the public at large you have to be willing to accept all kinds.
However, I do so detest the ill conceived attempts of some to instigate trouble and arguing by making over-inflated comments. In addition, it’s insulting to the intelligence of my original comments to attempt to trivialize what I am saying using childish banter that only you and those with lowest-common-denominator humor find witty.
Also, since it was brought up, we did, indeed, PICK our dogs after several years of research and consideration. We found Shiba Inu to be wonderful dogs that fit our lifestyle very well.
And, yes, I can strike a pose just fine with or without my “rover.” Thank you very much.
Name calling and oversimplification gives away your lack of true communication skills. I didn’t bring up this topic so you could come on here and take pot shots at me or my dogs. What a joke. If you had really taken the time to read what was the original point of this thread, you would see how off base and inappropriate your comments are… then again… maybe you wouldn’t.
Feel free to go away now and let the adults carry on a conversation.

etherhufferParticipantShiba Inu’s are interesting dogs. Glad you got a crown with diamonds for rescuing her, as the rescue would be sufficient without the crown. Its indeed an interesting discussion, one that is full of very self absorbed folks worried to death about going to the Market with their dogs, which could easily be tied to a post outside the premises to go along with the owner’s wishes. Discussions that point out the absurdity of the arguers is ripe for satire and fun poking. Don’t ride in any blimps, dirigibles, or balloons, lest you get some needling and in the end, deflated. Bow wow.

WSBKeymasterOuch, Flipjack, we resemble that remark.
Salesguy and I go to Easy Street for the occasional weekday breakfast while Junior Member of Team is in school and we sit there looking at each other, listening to the music and noting all the band posters, thinking “They let US in here?!”
Oh, and since you all have digressed off the Junction location – let us add, Alki Cafe. Challah French toast and grilled Italian sausage.

AnonymousInactiveCan’t speak for others, but I got my Shiba at a shelter after someone else beat the crap out of her. And I don’t go to the market myself, with or without my dogs. As for this thread, it’s called a discussion, but I can see how you might be limited in your friendships to recognize one. It would be okay with me if you went back to your corner.

etherhufferParticipantSorry, all blogging is narcissistic. Otherwise, why would people blog? Or drive red sports cars. Or perhaps own trendy single breed dogs? The idea that there is some conspiracy or terrible intolerance of dog owners is hilarious. What, can’t affect a pose without rover at your side? Rover supercedes the wishes of the event sponsors who may have legitimate concerns? Gads, if we turn out the lights, can we see your aura too?

FranciParticipantJanS…Yumm the Cajun benedict is my fav too, although last time I was there I tried the Joe’s scramble – that was pretty awsome too – love the garlic. :) I’ve only been once but Blackbird does a nice breakfast also.

April 1, 2008 at 4:24 am #586659Topic: Landscape help?
in forum WSB Reader RecommendationslinxxxMemberWe have a relatively small back yard, but are looking for some recommendations for landscaping assistance.
Main elements to the project – two small retaining walls, new lawn surface, backfill, potential of low voltage lighting and irrigation.
We have struggled to find a good contractor that doesn’t want to make this a huge project. Any recommendations appreciated!

beachdrivegirlParticipantOh I know. I have only been here for one serious accident back over the summer of ’06. I was going to the gym @ quarter till 6…normally I would get to the gym @ 6, work out, get ready for work, and be done for the day. On the day after the horrific accident that left 3 teenagers dead I drove an hour to get out of W.seattle and to the gym to get ready for work…yes @ 5:45 it took me until 7am to get out of W.Seattle…

AnonymousInactiveI think he believes jobs will be created here as well, but those are entry level positions at best. Not exactly what it takes to support a mortgage here.
And this really is a serious, valid concern when we essentially have only one route in and out. The bridge is often backed up to 35th as it is. And if there’s an accident, forget it.

AnonymousInactiveetherhuffer, I read your blog. It doesn’t seem narcissism is contained to just this site. Perhaps that’s why you recognize it. I notice you consider yourself somewhat of a comedian as well. May I suggest you not quit your day job.

beachdrivegirlParticipantI understand the benefits, but where do you think people are going to work to pay for not only these town homes or hummer houses, but to go to these bars/restraunts/stores in the area??? They need jobs and most of these jobs are outside of W.Seattle last time I checked….

melissaParticipantNice to meet you, Shibaguyz! I appreciate the compliments on the kid behavior. They were working my last nerve that morning! I was trying to do all of those things that all of us want from our kids: keep them well behaved and out of people’s way. And now that I’ve got the daughter trained to ask people if she can pet their dogs, I have to convince her that pet doesn’t mean hug! Your guys are lovely and so calm. We’ll be there next Sunday again & hope to see you.

AnonymousInactiveYou usually have to touch a dog or breathe in it’s dander to cause an allergic reaction. I would think if you’ve avoided this in other outdoor places you could here as well. And if this is real and not hypothetical, I do respect your concerns. I have to carry an epipen at all times because of near death anyphylaxis. Not fun.
Last allergy test found 46 out of a 100 to be moderate to severe allergens. In that respect I should probably be in a bubble suit, but we can’t cater to every single hazard in the world.
