    etherhuffer…

has your reindeer had it’s shots? because maybe a vet appointment is in order to take care of that pesky fly problem… neutering goes a long way towards fixing that small rutting problem.

if not, perhaps filleting is the more economical and hassle free choice.

in my case, we have already paid the vet bills and neither dog would fillet out to more than a small stew…

economically unfeasible for us.. but thanks for the tip.

with as many kids as you hear about getting snatched from right under a parent’s nose, or with kids running up and down aisles far from their parent I think a leash is a good idea. Not something you get from PetCo, but definitely something to keep the kids attached to the parent.

Well, this makes me sad. I was looking forward to going to the market this summer, and now I find that we won’t be welcome. Part of why we moved here was because I love to walk places, and part of walking is having our dog along with us to get our exercise. So now I guess walking into town to get a coffee, enjoying it outside, and then strolling through the market to pick up a few things on the way back home will be out of the question. Too bad. Guess we’ll just have to appreciate places like Fremont and Ballard even more…

Ok, so here is a legitimate question for all you people that want to protest the WS Farmers market b/c you can’t walk your dogs while you shop.

What if I am allergic to dogs? Why should I have run the risk of a severe allergic reaction just so that you can walk your dog?

You usually have to touch a dog or breathe in it’s dander to cause an allergic reaction. I would think if you’ve avoided this in other outdoor places you could here as well. And if this is real and not hypothetical, I do respect your concerns. I have to carry an epipen at all times because of near death anyphylaxis. Not fun.

Last allergy test found 46 out of a 100 to be moderate to severe allergens. In that respect I should probably be in a bubble suit, but we can’t cater to every single hazard in the world.

etherhuffer, I read your blog. It doesn’t seem narcissism is contained to just this site. Perhaps that’s why you recognize it. I notice you consider yourself somewhat of a comedian as well. May I suggest you not quit your day job.

Sorry, all blogging is narcissistic. Otherwise, why would people blog? Or drive red sports cars. Or perhaps own trendy single breed dogs? The idea that there is some conspiracy or terrible intolerance of dog owners is hilarious. What, can’t affect a pose without rover at your side? Rover supercedes the wishes of the event sponsors who may have legitimate concerns? Gads, if we turn out the lights, can we see your aura too?

Can’t speak for others, but I got my Shiba at a shelter after someone else beat the crap out of her. And I don’t go to the market myself, with or without my dogs. As for this thread, it’s called a discussion, but I can see how you might be limited in your friendships to recognize one. It would be okay with me if you went back to your corner.

Shiba Inu’s are interesting dogs. Glad you got a crown with diamonds for rescuing her, as the rescue would be sufficient without the crown. Its indeed an interesting discussion, one that is full of very self absorbed folks worried to death about going to the Market with their dogs, which could easily be tied to a post outside the premises to go along with the owner’s wishes. Discussions that point out the absurdity of the arguers is ripe for satire and fun poking. Don’t ride in any blimps, dirigibles, or balloons, lest you get some needling and in the end, deflated. Bow wow.

Yes, but you’re not good at either, so it’s just annoying.

I think the most amazing thing about some of the comments in these discussion forums is when people try to stir things up by making outrageous comments based on little or no facts surrounding the original conversation.

I have stated my point SEVERAL different times throughout this thread and there seem to be a couple of folks who have missed the point. Oh well… when you are dealing with the public at large you have to be willing to accept all kinds.

However, I do so detest the ill conceived attempts of some to instigate trouble and arguing by making over-inflated comments. In addition, it’s insulting to the intelligence of my original comments to attempt to trivialize what I am saying using childish banter that only you and those with lowest-common-denominator humor find witty.

Also, since it was brought up, we did, indeed, PICK our dogs after several years of research and consideration. We found Shiba Inu to be wonderful dogs that fit our lifestyle very well.

And, yes, I can strike a pose just fine with or without my “rover.” Thank you very much.

Name calling and oversimplification gives away your lack of true communication skills. I didn’t bring up this topic so you could come on here and take pot shots at me or my dogs. What a joke. If you had really taken the time to read what was the original point of this thread, you would see how off base and inappropriate your comments are… then again… maybe you wouldn’t.

Feel free to go away now and let the adults carry on a conversation.

Too many Sapporos. Hiccup. In all fairness, I went back to the original post. In all fairness, I do hope you get an answer from the organization that sets up the market. But if they give you a reason that counters what you want, will you accept it or continue to try to join the country club that does not want a particular member?

I happen to like dogs very much, have owned them over the years, now stuck with two cats, well taken care of. But I simply find the desire to impose what can be a nuisance to others a self absorbed passtime. Like blogging.

In Paris and abouts, I never saw one dogfight. I never saw a dog snatching food from the table of a restaurant. etc etc(pronounced “eksetera for the linguistically lazy). I can find a dog dust-up in Seattle just about any day of the week, Alki being a particualarly bad spot, followed by Lincoln Park’s secluded beach. Our bright, shiny, politically correct jewel by the sound is simpy not as civilized with its dogs as you might imagine, and the Market organizers likely don’t want lawyers hanging around with photos of dog bite victims and claims for lots of money. Hope you get your answer.

AGAIN… there was an answer found and posted here on this thread. I have made my choice about what I will do about it. Already stated that in an earlier post too. Anything else you’d like explained to you AGAIN so you’ll get the point?

Although I find it tough to give any credence to someone who calls him or herself “etherhuffer”, for the sake of this discussion I will. EH, I think you like to preach on matters which you’re not well-informed. I walk both the bluff and beaach of Lincoln Park several times a year and have done so for the last 11 years. I’ve NEVER seen a dog fight. I once saw a dog just after it had been attacked by another. That other had been on a leash at the time, for all of you anti-off-leash people.

I went to the Ballard Market last weekend, where dogs are allowed. The sign at the entrance requests short leashes and people keep their dogs on short leashes. There was no misbehavior, no nipping, and no barking. There was plenty of meeting and greeting, friendliness, and companionability. And there were dozens of people who walked to the market.

All of which is to say: what’s uncivilized about that?

This is definitely one of the weirdest threads on the WSB forum. I’ve never seen doggies fighting in our beautiful parks – just those infamous “doggie handshakes.”

I must admit, I’d love to be able to walk my dog up to the farmers market on Sunday. If they changed the rules it would be an enticement for me to make sure and get there every week.

Just as an aside to the other kind of leashing, I saw a child on a “leash” at the airport that I thought was very cute. The part on the child was like a stuffed animal backpack that went over her shoulders and the leash part was a furry tail for the mom to hold onto. It really didn’t look like a dog leash and I would imagine that when my kids were toddlers they would have liked it. I kept my very busy boy in a stroller or in a shopping cart (until he was too heavy for me to lift) in order to keep tabs on him. I liked the cheap collapsable umbrella strollers. They’re small and easily manuverable.

    etherhuffer…

shibas aren’t designer dogs… they simply require too much of a commitment.. even if you got your little bundle of mischief as a puppy.. instead of taking on rescue animals as JT and I did.

(Both JT and i want to know where to go for our diamond tiaras.. as neither of us got more for our trouble than our sweet dogs.)

they do take great pictures tho…

as for dogs fighting in public.. that is an owner problem.. not a dog problem.

those of us who have dogs who shouldn’t be trading insults with others should keep them on leashes and away from other animals.

if you have seen dog fights on the beach.. you have seen the result of irresponsible owners. Dogs are not allowed on Seattle Beaches. And dogs in the parks adjoining them are supposed to be on leashes.

The rule at the market is arbitrary.. and i can respect their right to be arbitrary. i will just vote with my dollars and go elsewhere… as the shibbaguyz already do.

The issue was the rudeness with which they enforced that rule and their unwillingness to talk about the policy with their patrons.

Even dog owners are due a little common courtesy.

Actually, as the former Chair of the Seattle Animal Control Commission, I think the best way of dealing with this issue is to make all the dogs “service animals” (in training?) or a prescription pet (just have your doctor write a prescription for your “mental health” to have one.)

Then the market can’t turn you away. Unless they want to pay you $21,000 like the grocery store in North Seattle.

As a QuickBooks and Quicken consultant, I discovered the advantage of being pet-friendly since many of my “house calls” are to people’s homes and home offices.

I used to have companion animals until I discovered that I was allergic to them on a long term basis. They make a welcome distraction (to pet and play with) when I am waiting for the software to update.

Perhaps the West Seattle Market should do the same. They might make more money, gasp.
