I have a two bedroom, one bath apartment I use as a short term rental. It takes as little as 30 minutes and as long as an hour to clean, which includes changing out two beds’ linens, wiping down the bathroom and a small mini kitchen, vacuuming, folding towels, and taking out the garbage. In many instances, there is little need to vacuum or do much serious cleaning, as the guests are almost always very clean and tidy, as they are reviewed on how clean they leave my rental. I need a person to do this on a regular basis that has the flexibility to do it during the middle of the week, or on weekends, usually between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The compensation is $35 per cleaning. This would be ideal for someone that lives in West Seattle who works from home, and is looking for some extra income. There are as many as 2 – 3 cleanings needed per week. If this sounds like something you are interested in, please email with a little information about yourself, and some details on why you would like to take on the regular cleanings. My email is: winenaut@yahoo.com The first cleaning would be this Sunday, 9/23. Thank you.

    mark47n,
Thanks! I’ve been fascinated by it and my partner is tired of me gawking at it. It always amazes me how people will come up with such a device for a particular need. That is some piece of mechanical engineering!

I grew up on a navy base with a shipyard & they would have an open house every year. As a kid, it was always fascinating. I wish more businesses (including my workplace) would have more open houses for intrigued 60+ year old kids like me. Again thanks for taking the time to explain it. My partner thanks you as well! :-)

I know this is not WS but with the Maharaja being so inconsistent and a not long ago closed by the health department for a while, I went looking for a new Indian place.
The newly opened Royal Everest in Burien, which living in Arbor Heights is just about as close as the Junction, is wonderful. I have been there a butch of times and never had a bad meal. 4 star rating on Yelp. The health depart sign in the window says “Excellent”. I am going to Burien more and more to eat out. The parking is just to damn difficult in the Junction there days. I use a cane, so I don’t like to walk several blocks. I almost always find parking on the block the restaurant is on. Check it up. Two forks up.

I have never had a conversation with anyone who had their dog in a store and my thought has always been that its more likely that they don’t want to leave their dog outside rather than all these people are going around thinking they have some sort of service dog. In my mind they know its wrong but they love their dog and are out on a walk and needed something. Who would mind their precious pooch? I don’t like it. And I don’t like those people who walk around in stores with a bird on their shoulder! ??
And the dog in the basket of the cart ? Its probably not any worse than the baby with a diaper. It just creeps me out that someone thinks their dog belongs there. Its a dog not a baby!! As a previous dog owner with a very poorly behaved dog, my one piece of advise to anyone who is interested, to have a dog who is ok staying at home, you need to start practicing when they are a puppy. They need to learn its ok when you leave without them. If you wait until they are older you will be screwed. So as hard as it is to leave that cute little puppy at home when you go to the store, you will be so happy for all the years to come. And yes, putting them in a crate so they don’t wreck your house is not traumatic for anyone but you. As I understand it, dogs like the security when they are young.

Why is it that people can complain about a 3-day music event that’s too noisy and actually mention a class action lawsuit, yet when i complain about no buses going down 1st Ave. in Pioneer Square and going up the hill, I’m selfish or a whiner, and I should just walk up the hill to 3rd no matter how hard it is for me, or take Ubers whether or not I can afford them?

I realize that 1st Ave. is torn up now, which was supposed to be to get ready for the Center City Connector (CCC) streetcar. But that may never happen, from what I hear. The mayor seems to be opposed, and it does seem like a very expensive transportation method.

But once the streets are back to normal again, and if the CCC is scrapped, I kind of doubt there will be any kind of buses that go from the waterfront or from 1st Ave. to 3rd or otherwise up that hill. Some people in the Seattle Transit Blog comments keep saying “But there are buses on 3rd. Why are buses needed on 1st?”

It seems like if anyone has any kind of mobility problems, the bus system is getting less and less a choice. I understand that stops need to be spaced farther apart, but there have always been buses or some kind of public transportation down 1st Ave.. The local West Seattle buses like the 21 and 56 (and the earlier 18) always went somewhere on 1st and then went to 3rd or somewhere else downtown. After those moved to 3rd there were other buses that went from 1st to 3rd. I’m talking about from the 1880’s until last December, about 130 years. Now suddenly buses aren’t needed on 1st.

This is a huge problem for me, and it’s affecting my budget as I’m having to take Ubers instead of the bus. Why can’t I be allowed to complain about this? I’m sure I’m not the only one affected by this.

Hi Everyone, I need your help!

I desperately need to replace a septic guy who never shows up when he promises he will, drinks beer while he and his partner work (which is never more than 45 minutes at a time), parks his truck on the lawn, puts out cigarettes on the patio, and always wants cash on the spot. He’s left the job half done, and he was a no-call no-show today. Our tank is about to overflow again, and it’s already been pumped 3 times in the past couple of weeks.

I’m also looking for recommended deck builders. I have a bid from someone suggested here in an older thread, and I hoping to get a couple more bids.

    Thanks so much!

I’m selling my gorgeous king mattress and bed frame because I’m moving to Los Angeles. It’s a WONDERFUL mattress, completely spotless and clean. No animal hair, no smoke, zero stains. Always has a cover on it. SUPER comfortable and nearly brand new. Barely used. I’m sad to have to sell it. JCPenney iseries top of the line.

Comes with beautiful wooden bed frame and box springs.

    $950 for all! A steal!!

Some people are shy. Trust me. And shyness can be mistaken for gruffness.

Anyway, we have lived not far from the uppermost end of those stairs for a quarter-century and walk past the top of them multiple times every day. Walked the stairs many times in younger years. There are always runners and joggers using them (though I’ve never seen more than a couple at a time). They are not a “park” as described above but an actual SDOT right-of-way – with Seattle’s hills, more than a few streets include stretches of stairway where it was too steep for a street to be built. The top stretch has only one house bordering it (though there has been a long-pending proposal for another one) but the lower stretch, which is less steep, goes between houses, most if not all with fenced yards. Anyway, whichever stretch, it’s public property, so it belongs to you, and to all of us. – TR

Our take: Winters (and much of fall and spring) are sublime. It’s so quiet and always beautiful! The point gives you two very different beach experiences, and lovely to stick in a kayak and cruise. Summers are crazy busy, but the mornings are usually serene. I love the way you can get downtown w/out a car so easily (bike, bus or water taxi). Those little libraries are popping up everywhere, and dogs and their people become acquaintances quickly. I think we’re all looking forward to seeing what goes in those empty storefronts along the beach; really could use something like a Cone and Steiner market!
There’s not a lot of real estate available; I’d say go for it if you can.

    This is fascinating!

I grew up playing ball in the street, riding my bike in the street and many other things. It was simply what we did and how it was. The parents knew their kids were “outside” and would fetch them for meals or would come out if they heard crying or were fetched by kid.

Conversely, as noted above, we hold kids hands, closely supervise play at a park, wring their hands when their kids are out of sight. WE protect their feelings and insist that they’re “special”.

My kids are special TO ME. I don’t expect them to be special to others. I expect them to be able to exercise regular caution when in the street. I also expect drivers to exercise regular caution; to watch out for children, etc. The caution is also the legal responsibility attached to the driver of the car/truck. Kids in the streets is always a possibility on a residential street…everywhere. It’s also not against the law. It’s not like we’re talking W. Marginal, it’s local side streets.

    Hear hear Sunuva!
I take side streets to get down to Westwood Village and back because it’s easier, there’s less traffic, and it’s a lovely drive (so many beautiful homes and awesome neighbors to wave hi to! Plus on the way back, I don’t end up causing a massive backup trying to make a left at a light off of Delridge). I cruise down the side streets going between 15-18mph and I don’t plan on changing that pattern any time soon.

It always frustrates me when some idiot is going 30+ or wants to and ends up riding my bumper but I’m still going to keep crawling along at my lower than the limit speed. If someone is late, they should have left earlier. Emergencies aside, people need to chill out and slow down to enjoy the views.

    Hello everyone
Now, I’m not bashing the USPS – I realize they have their jobs to do, and in weather, it can be difficult. Does anyone know what their rule is regarding placement of packages that they deliver? I was always under the impression that if they deliver a package to you that doesn’t fit in your mailbox, they are to place it at your front door if it is accessible. We live on a street with no sidewalk or parking, and have a locking mailbox at the bottom of our driveway. Our driveway is steep but easily accessible. Today, for the second time in a few weeks, I’ve found our packages just laying streetside at the foot of our mailbox. I doubt this is our usual carrier, as he’s always delivered them at the top of the driveway. Last year when this happened, I went to the Post Office to complain, but was told that the supervisor was (conveniently) unavailable. Can someone explain what it is our carriers should be doing in this situation? I’ve never been able to locate a phone number for our local West Seattle Post Office, and the one time I made an on-line complaint, it went completely unanswered…I shudder to think of the upcoming holiday season….
    Thanks.

Totally- maybe I misunderstood the OP but when he/she said “stop expecting drivers to be personally responsible for your children” I interpreted that to mean that parents, not drivers, are responsible if a driver crashes into a child. My position is car drivers are always responsible for a collision with a child regardless of whether the child is playing, walking, running, biking, in the street. The only time a driver would not be responsible for a collision is if the person jumped out right in front of a car and there was absolutely no way the car driver could avoid the collision.

I was wondering if anyone else noticed or can shed light on the placement of dumpsters along California Avenue at the newish “Springline Apartments” on the 3400 block. The dumpsters are always on the sidewalk and approaching pick-up, they are overflowing with debris all over the place. It is a neighborhood blight. It was enough to put up with the construction. Is this the end state design?

I tried looking up the regulations but alas, I got drowned in links. 1. How can dumpsters placed on sidewalks be legal? 2. How can such a large development be approved for occupancy without provisions for solid waste handling?

Most of us that live here take pride in keeping our community clean and safe. This seems a bit appalling.

“My worry is that once an income tax is started it will go up, up, up, and municipalities and state agencies will still charge or pass new taxes further burdening everyone.”

This is exactly why we will never improve our tax system. Even when voters have a chance to move toward a fairer, more progressive tax system the defeatist attitude prevails. Just a couple of years ago there was an initiative that would have levied a small income tax on the most wealthy corporations and individuals in the state (I don’t remember the initiative number, you could look it up). It would have been enough to completely cover the costs of a state sponsored healthcare program and only affect a tiny portion of the populace. And it was something we all got to vote on, not something cooked up by legislators. Result? Not passed. Because “once they start an income tax…”

So, always a good topic for complaining, but no stomach, even among voters much less legislators, to do even the slightest thing to alter one of the most unfair and regressive tax systems among the 50 states.
