Coming home last night from Des Moines fireworks show a car at the intersection of SW 106th & 35th Ave SW going northbound crossed the intersection all the while the radiator smoking and most of the front passenger side smashed in. We can tell you where the car owner lives since they just drove home.

I am fed up! Is there a way to hold landlords responsible for their tenants? My next door neighbor caused me and my dogs to huddle in the basement!

Yep. Yep. and, Yep. Lowman Beach Park gets trashed every year for the week before the 4th and then like crazy on the 4th. As much as I wish to support my local police, they are useless… I mean, really useless. So, this year, the trashing was the worst so far. Gang tags all over the neighborhood, one huge group of 20 plus people setting off huge fireworks for over 2 hours… police NEVER even showed up and I know for sure they got several calls from me and other neighbors.

Really ridiculous. If you want to trash your own yard, feel free. But trashing a public park… come on! Grow up!

Last night the neighbors yet again shot off their illegal fireworks display for a 4th year in a row. After repeatedly asking said ILLEGAL fireworks people to at least set them off over the golf course rather than over our houses I got verbally accosted and harassed. Last year it resulted in them blowing up our mailbox – which I might add is a FEDERAL OFFENSE. I was excited to see the police car FINALLY come by when I waved them down only to hear that they had “talked” to them. AND THEN AS WE WERE STANDING THERE THEY SET THEM OFF AGAIN AND THE POLICE OFFICERS DID NOTHING. I am mad as a hornet right now. With my father being a retired officer of the law I never thought I would find myself so mad at a police officer as I am right now. And now all I have to look forward to is another couple of nights sedating my fireworks sensitive dogs and waiting for my mailbox to explode again.

We drove down early this afternoon just to check out the sights, drove all around the lake, walked through gas works….. Most streets are closed to through traffic, Eastlake has no parking on the northbound side of the street. I don’t know that you’d find a good place to park – what you may want to do is see if the Courtyard Marriot has a room available – great view, parking, swimming pool.

Well, we had to start somewhere, and the line needed two termini, so what we have is the beginning. No matter what route, or the destinations, or the number of stops, people would complain. Seattle has too long stunted our development in our never-ending quest for absolute consensus.

Hopefully, we will look at the first line and say “that’s a good start” rather than “it isn’t instantly everything for everyone, so it’s a failure.”

Now if we could get the route planners at Metro to realize that consistent and frequent neighborhood shuttles and East/West routes have been too long neglected.

It shouldn’t take me 45 minutes to get from Ak. Jct. to Alki. I shouldn’t have to go downtown to get to the VA. It shouldn’t have taken me three buses to get 3.5 miles from Green Lake to View Ridge when I lived there.

Sorry about the tangent; long festering issue for me.

    autumn…

someone will make a lot of taxpayer money if we do nothing and the viaduct tumbles… unfortunately, they will have to lose the lives of those they love to do so.

i lived in St Paul when the freeway bridge fell. Trust me.. it isn’t something we want to see happen here.

I was close enough to being on that bridge that day to make the hair stand up on the back of my neck…

I may have missed being on the bridge but i did watch property prices in my neighborhood fall because of the hole in commuter access to downtown Minneapolis…

We didn’t lose anyone we loved to the bridge that day.. but we did lose 50 thousand plus when we sold our house to move here :(

I will miss the viaduct.. driving it is one of my greatest pleasures.. but the other day i looked down and realized how much it cuts the waterfront off from the city. Seattle can’t become a walkable city as long as it stands….

Regardless of what we do, it won’t stand for long. The question is .. do we take it down safely with a replacement option or does it fall?

Thanks to my neighbor’s enthusiasm for the fourth and my sweet puppies fear.. i drove north to Mt Baker yesterday… Amazing.. even with the mountain at least partly covered by clouds…

i took hwy 9 north which took forever but was a pleasant meander through farm country and quirky little towns… but Seattle to the turnoff to Mt Baker Hwy is an easy couple of hours and on the way back down the mountain you can drive through bellingham and down chuckanut drive…

Mr. JT…bear traps and No Trespassing signs? Or are those too subtle? We have a walkway from the front of our bldg. to the back parking lot (so between 42nd SW, after you walk up the front walk, and the lot behind the building. ) The landlord posted No Trespassing signs. Yet I’m constantly running into people who use the small walkway to go from 41st to Adm. Safeway. And the foot traffic from the highschool during the school year is incredible. I have told the kids to move on, that it’s private property. I get treated like I was speaking a foreign language.

So sorry about your neighbors. Maybe a flyer with a gentle reminder about the Tool Library is in order in their mailbox.

Hey Julie, how about we trade neighbors? Ours does NOTHING to their yard. Their front steps/porch are rotted out from the vines that have taken the over, so they and their guests use OUR yard to access their house.

I would be more than happy to hear a leaf blower / lawnmower for a couple of hours a week.

I agree! I am really upset on several counts.

What I can’t stand is all those rafters clogging up the Duwamish River on some Wednesday evenings. You can’t get through with your yacht. They are slow to move out of the way and then they complain about your wake. Do they think they own the river or what? C’mon people!

And while I’m on the topic, my neighbor is raising his roof and the new rafters have already destroyed my view of the alley behind Safeway. How’d he get a permit for that anyway? And what happened to the Public Notice sign? Does he even care what his neighbors think?

(Pssssttttt, Roseanne… The thread is ranters, not rafters.)

    Never mind!

To the neighbor of Mr. Vedder…. DUDE, you’re a neighbor, if the construction noise is bothering you, just go next door and SAY SOMETHING.

And also? If the noise is going on from the hours of say 8am – 5pm, they’re well within city ordinance rights to conduct construction business. I say get over it and be glad your neighbors are improving their house, thereby improving YOUR property values.

    Peas out.

He is still living in W.Seattle –(don’t ya know with those REALLY fun remodel projects you have to still live nearby so you can be on-site almost EVERY day!). He’s a current neighbor to a friend of mine at a condo complex which will remain unidentified!

I love going to Paseo in Ballard for messy sandwiches (cash only) and then heading to Golden Gardens or the Locks to eat and people watch. I know you mentioned the Locks already but that’s my favorite place in Seattle. Drinks on the deck at Ray’s Cafe and then come back to West Seattle for pie at Shoofly. I think Magnolia is also a pretty cool neighborhood with some beautiful homes, but I don’t spend much time there.

A friend of mine used to live in an apartment next to some tenants who watched their television at such high volume that it vibrated the walls. They also left it on about 20 hrs. per day, even when they weren’t home. Attempts to talk to this neighbor were met with extreme attitude – not surprising.

Anyway, my friend did science programs for kids, and owned a Tesla coil. When the coil was turned on and aimed at the wall, it would zap the television in the next room. I wonder if something similar could be rigged up for the boom box junkies? Kind of like a boom box death ray?

    Hello WS Neighbors –

Just wondering where your best places, art galleries, events, activities, scenic drives or viewpoints in city, etc., folks take their visiting peeps. I’m not looking for the obvious basics we all like to show off, which are of course very good, like the Market, or UW Campus or Ballard Locks, etc. But, rather the particular gems that make our city and neighborhood special and make your lives here a pleasure and out-of-towners jealous. :]

Just to get the ball rolling, for example, restaurants. What dishes in particular do you recommend? What bar and why? What viewpoints? Is there something special in another neighborhood (is it ok to ask that?) What activity or place or adventure thrill your guests?

Not just West Seattle, but the whole city. TIA.

    Julie…

    chill..

i am guessing there is some activity at your house that aggravates your neighbors as much as the leaf blower aggravates you.

do you have children or dogs or even worse.. teenagers? Do you ever play music.. especially classical music? is anyone at your house taking music lessons.. and practicing? have you ever hung a picture on the wall or done any home improvement project? have your trees ever been trimmed? is your mower silent?

We tend to notice other people’s noise while discounting our own… and when we have moved on in life past the noisy stages we tend to forget how much we contributed to the urban orchestra ourselves.

if the leaf blower bothers you that much… leave the house when they are scheduled to work.

No matter where you live in West Seattle.. no matter whether you drive or walk… you are minutes away from a public park and some measure of tranquility.

Go on.. smell the roses… summer is on it’s way…

So, triplecp, at least 3 of the people that are bugging you are probably not RC vendors and aren’t at Safeway and yet in your thread title, and original post, you rip both. Have you also spoken with management and written the state about those 3 around the liquor store? You’re changing your tone a bit now, but I’ll address the elephant in MY room. Not that long ago, you posted this:

I’m glad (truly, unemployment stinks) that it sounds like things have turned around for you, but as acemotel pointed out above, but for the grace of god/goddess/dog/whatever, go I. And when you set the whole thing up with statements like “their life sucks and I’d be drinking too,” I just can’t give you much empathy. I’m happy to see I have other neighbors who know what that word means.

Big-time rave for Silver Star Roofing.

My wife and I started collecting bids on our roof this spring. We got bids from five different companies, and received bids which were in the neighborhood of $15-20k. I was very pleasantly surprised when I received the bid at from Kelly at Silver Star — it was 40-50% lower than the lowest of the other bids we collected. After talking with Kelly a couple of times, I decided to accept his bid.

Kelly started the job on time, completed it quickly, and did a fantastic job. I couldn’t be happier with the appearance of my beautiful new roof. If you can believe it, I am actually looking forward to the next heavy rain so I can sit in my house with peace of mind and without worry.

When Kelly started my new roof, he quickly discovered that the supporting deck of my existing roof was woefully deficient and needed replacing. With the job already started, I was in a very vulnerable position, but Kelly was very accommodating. He didn’t charge me unreasonable labor for replacing the roof deck and didn’t charge me exorbitant prices for the extra needed material. He worked late hours and still completed the job within the originally estimated timeframe.

When the job was done Kelly cleaned up the site spotlessly. I’m very happy that we decided to go with his bid. I cannot recommend him highly enough – if you want an honest bid from a local (West Seattle !), small company, this is the roofing company for you.

charlabob, I don’t think I phrased this as a rant, nor as a demand to outlaw leafblowers, nor as an expectation of complete control over my environment. It is, rather, a request that people give consideration to this aspect of choosing a yard-care service.

Most of us would rather not annoy our neighbors. Indeed, I have no wish to block your passage on the sidewalk, and I would consider it a rudeness to do so. Were I oblivious to your annoyance at being unable to pass, I would prefer that you (kindly) bring it to my attention. As I have tried to do in my post.

As soon as I can get my belongings into a storage unit – I will most definately be cruising/canvasing the neighborhood in my search of a rental. I’m overwhelmed with the whole process of packing, storing, and THEN looking for a place, but such is life! I will also start a new thread – maybe someone out there has a rental or knows of a rental and hasn’t posted on CL or somewhere else.
