Now that the Super Bowl and the Olympics are over, fear not! West Seattle Girls Water Polo season is starting! The team started practices on Monday, May 2nd and will be having their annual fundraiser on Saturday, March 7th 3:30-5:10 pm at Southwest Pool. Players will tread water for 100 minutes without touching the bottom or sides of the pool and without using flotation devices. They will quickly pivot to competition, with their first game away at Ingraham HS on May 18th after they warm-up during the Jamboree on May 14th.
The girls formed this team two years ago and had a successful inaugural season after gaining permission from the league to play, but no funds were provided by the school or district for the team. Last year, the team placed 7th in state while all the teams in the district had to managed a 30% increase in pool rental fees. This year, the league has increased the number of home games each team hosts by 50%, so more water polo, but more expenses. Donations will fund scholarships, pay for pool-rental time, league fees, and equipment.
Girls from any high school are welcome to join the team. Head Coach Steve McKinnon and Assistant Coach Cam Rantz are ready to quickly bring new players to proficiency. Practices will be 2 mornings per week before school with home games on Thursday evening. Practices started this week and the season runs through late-May with 12 players including our first player from Vashon Island High School.

Let’s Talk About It – A Monthly Women’s Circle at Lagom Studios
There are so many conversations we carry quietly.
The doubts. The resentment. The ambition. The marriage tension. The identity shifts. The burnout. The desire for more. The questions about who we’re becoming.
And not to mention, having to hold up the sky while the world is on fire.
This is a space to talk about the real things.
Each month, we gather in West Seattle for a grounded, welcoming women’s circle designed for honest conversation and meaningful connection. This is not therapy. It’s not a lecture. It’s not surface-level small talk.

Grief Support Groups
Grief groups are brave and safe spaces where bereaved people can share their stories and speak their loved one’s name without fear of getting advice, platitudes, or being shut out, no matter how long it’s been since their loved one’s passing. Every participant has dedicated time to speak about whatever they’d like, without judgment or interruption. Talking about our deceased loved ones in a supportive environment helps us remember them fully and helps us learn to carry the weight of their loss a little more gently.
These are ongoing, drop-in groups, but space is limited. Because of the sensitive nature of traumatic loss, the Thursday group is open only for those who are traumatic loss survivors. Learn more and register at listeningtogrief.com/groups. Contact Tamara at tamara@listeningtogrief.com with questions.

The Seattle Branch of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society is pleased to announce a new class in West Seattle, demonstrating its ongoing commitment to the promotion of Scotland’s unique dance form in the Seattle metro area.
The class welcomes both families and individuals ages eight and over, regardless of experience. This weekly introduction to joyful jigs, lively reels and elegant strathspeys will take place at Fauntleroy Church on Tuesday evenings from 7:00-9:00 beginning September 9th. The Church, located at 9140 California Avenue SW, has ample parking and is conveniently located on the RapidRide C line and a half mile from the Fauntleroy ferry terminal. Comfortable clothing permitting ease of movement, non-marking shoes and a good sense of humor are the only essentials for the class. An individual’s first class is free. Thereafter per class fees will be $10 and $5 for ages 8-17.
Seattle Branch Chair, EB Van Otterloo, will be one of the class instructors. Of Scottish Country Dancing, Van Otterloo says, “There are so many things to love about this form of dance. It’s social, but you don’t need to bring a partner. It’s good exercise for your body and your mind, and most of all, it is such good fun.”
Blaine Peet, who has taught Scottish Country Dancing around the world, will join Van Otterloo in teaching the new class. “Once you have learned the basics, you can dance with people anywhere across the U.S. and Canada, and around the globe. It’s a great way to make new friends in different cultures, no matter whether you are in Europe, Asia or Australia.”
The Seattle Branch has regular social events and runs classes in the U-District, at the Phinney Neighborhood Center and in Edmonds while also promoting classes in Tacoma, Burien and Mount Vernon, among others. More information is available at rscds-seattle.org/classes

On January 14, the Seattle Police Department will launch the first of its 10 monthly community conversations, “Our City, Our Safety 2026” across the city, with each gathering designed to influence how the department will approach safety neighborhood by neighborhood. In partnership with the Department of Neighborhoods, the department is holding the first meeting at the Rainier Beach Community Center, followed by a second on Feb. 11 at the Green Lake Community Center, and the third on March 11 at the Alki Beach Boathouse. Each meeting will take place from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.
While the Seattle Department constantly engages with community partners, the Our City, Our Safety series is intended to enhance our efforts.
What differentiates this series is how the information will be used and, eventually, shared back with stakeholders. At the first of two annual meetings in each Seattle precinct, police officials – including Chief Shon Barnes and each precinct captain – will present information and gather feedback and ideas from attendees. And at the second meeting, they will share results, lessons learned, unexpected impacts, and other updates to continuously improve and create accountability.
“Safety means different things to Seattle’s more than 800,000 residents, whether you live in Rainier Beach, Ballard, or Capitol Hill, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Having honest conversations – and being accountable for our actions – is critical to moving forward,” said Chief Shon Barnes. “My goal with Our City, Our Safety is to emphasize how dedicated SPD employees are to earning trust and building the partnerships we need to change peoples’ perceptions.”
“Every neighborhood in Seattle deserves to feel safe and connected, and the only way we get there is by listening to the people who live that experience every day. This partnership is about meeting residents where they are, across languages and cultures and building solutions with them,” says Department of Neighborhoods Director Jenifer Chao. “When we lead with community, safety endures. I’m hopeful about what this series can unlock: deeper trust, shared understanding, and real progress.”
What can you expect?
The Seattle Police Department and Department of Neighborhoods designed a 90-minute meeting that combines the best of a town hall with the best of a neighborhood watch program. Participants will have the chance to hear directly from police officials and each other. The meeting also features a roundtable portion where they can have more in-depth conversations about urgent concerns to try to co-develop solutions or examine the department’s past efforts.
“This is our opportunity to go beyond analyzing data and hear stories and potential solutions directly from the people who live, work, study, and play in Seattle’s diverse neighborhoods,” said Asssistant Chief Tyrone Davis. “Their input will let us co-create solutions to current – and hopefully potential future – problems.”
The concept is grounded in research that indicates that when residents come together with police to discuss their concerns, solutions, and ideas, they can create collaborative safety strategies that truly reflect the unique needs of each neighborhood. The series is designed to complement the Seattle Police Department’s current efforts, including its active advisory councils such as the West Seattle Advisory Council, the LGBTQ Advisory Council, and the Belltown Advisory Council and local business engagements such as Coffee with a Cop.
Concept reflects community feedback
The department piloted this concept in the South Precinct in October, holding a community event with the Department of Neighborhoods at the Filipino Community Center. About 80 people attended, with South Precinct Captain Heidi Tuttle, Davis, and Barnes presenting updates to the audience. During the meeting, people exchanged ideas, addressed complex challenges, revealed their unique perceptions about public safety, discussed first-hand experiences with criminal activity, and shared their thoughts about the root causes of crime.
“People were able to say what they wanted to say and felt that they were heard,” said Agness Navarro, the Filipino Community Center’s executive director.
Academic researchers from the Seattle University Crime & Justice Research Center who specialize in studying residents’ perceptions about public safety also join these meetings.

Words, Writers, Southwest Stories: “West Seattle Beavers: Living Their Best Life While Boosting Salmon & Bird Habitat” (Pamela Adams)
Thurs, Mar 12th 2026 at 6 pm on Zoom
Did you know that beaver dams are helping to reconnect historic floodplains?
Did you know that there are over thirty of these dams in your local urban watershed?
Explore Longfellow Creek through the lens of Pamela Adams, Seattle’s “freelance beaver detective” — a trained Beaver Corps practitioner working for human-beaver coexistence. For the past four years, she’s documented expanding beaver families in West Seattle using noninvasive cameras, uncovering how these “eco-engineers” survive pollution, habitat disruption, and limited food. Learn how their newly added dams help filter stormwater, boost coho salmon spawning, and bird populations, restoring ecological health like a furry probiotic — offering a hopeful model for how allowing a native keystone species to not only exist but thrive can improve our urban watersheds for many other species that depend on fresh water.

White Center Repair Event
– Saturday, March 14, 9:30 am-12:30 pm, White Center Fieldhouse (the “Log Cabin”), Steve Cox Memorial Park, 1321 SW 102nd St.
At this King County free community repair event (KingCounty.gov/repair-events), skilled volunteer “fixers” will try to repair and mend household items and clothing. King County-sponsored repair events are first-come, first-served – for people’s first items only – as fixers are available. If people bring second items, we try to get to those after we’ve worked on everyone’s first items.
Items our fixers can potentially work on at these repair events include household and personal items that are small enough to be carried in by one person, including certain electronics, small furniture, and clothing/textiles. Items brought in for repair, including clothing, must be clean.
We may decline to work on any item – in advance or at the event – depending on the item, the type of repair needed, the fixers available, or for other reasons.
No equipment that uses gasoline. No cell phones, tablet computers or microwaves. No knife or tool sharpening. No lengthy reconstructive repairs. No major clothing alterations. Items brought in – including clothing and things like fans, vacuums and air fryers – must be reasonably clean. Fixers cannot clean items, or work on items they would have to clean first.
For more info about King County’s repair events program, contact program coordinator Tom at tom.watson@kingcounty.gov or at 206-477-4481.

Priorities change monthly to meet special and seasonal needs — so please check our website for updates.
The Westside Interfaith Network (WIN), our donations-drive partner, requests non-perishable food/personal hygiene items as well as men’s work clothing, socks, work boots, etc. Outdoor gear is always needed: blankets, tents, tarps, backpacks, etc.
Your donations are distributed through WIN’s “Welcome Table,” a weekly Saturday meal for unsheltered and low-income folks hosted in White Center. This distribution serves as a stopgap for many people relying on weekly visits to the food bank.
Can’t make it to the monthly drive? No problem! Just leave your donations in the barrel outside the church’s front entrance … at your convenience.
IF YOU WANT TO DONATE MORE THAN 3 BAGS, PLEASE CONTACT US FIRST TO MAKE ARRANGEMENTS. We unfortunately don’t have the storage space or staff to accommodate large donations between drives.
Many of the folks who receive your donations are unsheltered. Please do NOT leave inappropriate household items that aren’t requested.
Deepest gratitude to our community for your generous support of our neighbors in need.
