Chief Sealth International High School‘s football squad fought hard against Bishop Blanchet on Saturday, falling just short with a final score of 21-14. The game was a noon kickoff at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex.
We were only able to attend in-person for the 1st quarter, which ended scoreless at 0-0. Sealth athletic director Ernest “Coach P.” Policarpio tells us that QB Michael Wayman scored on a TD run in the 2nd quarter, and the game was tied 7-7 at the half. Xander Gomez added a TD for the Seahawks in the 3rd quarter, hauling in a pass from Wayman, but Bishop Blanchet scored twice in the 2nd half to seal the victory for the Bears.

In Friday’s only home varsity football game, West Seattle High School‘s win streak was snapped by Seattle Prep, which won 60-13. Photojournalist Oliver Hamlin reports that West Seattle got off to a hot start, responding to Prep’s opening drive touchdown with a kick return touchdown by Kian Deeds:
The Wildcats also scored in the second quarter with a pass to Justice Nguyen.

Chief Sealth International High School‘s varsity volleyball team is having a great year – undefeated until last night, having lost only one set on their way to eight consecutive victories. It just so happened that the first match we were able to go photograph ended as their first loss, 3-1 to Seattle Academy at CSIHS. But it was close – photojournalist Oliver Hamlin reports that the Seahawks won their first set 25-21.
But they lost the next three sets 24-26, 23-25, and 19-25. More scenes from last night’s match:

(West Seattle quarterback Carlos Patino with the Huling Bowl trophy)
Every fall, Chief Sealth International High School and West Seattle High School play one big crosstown-competition football game with a trophy at stake: The Huling Bowl (here’s the backstory on why the game has that name). Last night was the big night, with a big crowd at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex, where both teams play home games; CSIHS was the home team this time. Both teams ceremoniously charged onto the field, Sealth from the south and West Seattle from the north:
WSHS won for the second year in a row, 22-6. Here’s how it unfolded:
West Seattle #34 Dylan Seaborn-Diaz (above with Sealth #5 Oliver Clark) scored the first TD with 6:33 to go in the first quarter. Chief Sealth blocked the point-after attempt, so the score sat at 6-0 and was still there at the end of the first.
The Seahawks didn’t get close to scoring territory in the early going, though #3 quarterback Michaal Wayman (above) did a lot of throwing. On the Wildcats’ part, #5 quarterback Carlos Patino (below) ran in the first of his two TDs at 10:16 to go in the second quarter:
WSHS #5 Coco Cicero (below, with CSIHS #8 Jeampy Kamili) caught the two-point conversion that followed:
That brought the score to 14-0. The stands remained spirited on both sides:
A Chief Sealth fumble put the ball back in WSHS hands less than two minutes later, but the Wildcats turned the ball over on downs with just under six minutes left in the half. Among the action before halftime was an interception by Sealth #23 Xander Gomez:
The score was still 14-0 at the half, which spotlighted cheer teams and band/drumline performances:
In the second half, head coach Anthony Stordahl‘s Wildcats scored again, another running TD by #6 Patino at 8:34:
Another two-point conversion ensued, caught by #10 Grady Scheff:
That brought West Seattle’s lead to 22-0. But head coach Daron Camacho‘s Seahawks kept fighting, and #6 Wayman ran in a TD with 4:36 left in the third quarter.
That was it for scoring, on both sides. A few other scenes from the game – West Seattle’s #12 Tate Read (below) running downfield:
Chief Sealth #26 Loto Amituanai running downfield:
Below, WSHS #7 Justice Nguyen and CSIHS #6 Gabe Read:
So the Huling Bowl trophy remains at West Seattle for a second year.
The Wildcats are now 3-2 and play next Friday at 7 pm at NCSWAC vs. Seattle Prep; the Seahawks are now 0-5 and will be on the road next Friday, 7 pm vs. Rainier Beach at SE Athletic Complex.
(Our first report on Huling Bowl 2026, including quick updates during the game, is here.)

(The athletic directors: Chief Sealth’s Ernest Policarpio, West Seattle’s Corey Sorenson)
With 10 minutes to go in the first half, the scoring is all West Seattle High School so far – 14-0 over Chief Sealth International High School. Updates to come.
8:01 PM: Now halftime, still WSHS 14, CSIHS 0.
(Superintendent on the sidelines)
Surprise sighting a few minutes ago- we’re at the top of the bleachers, and suddenly there was Superintendent Ben Shuldiner saying hi.
8:44 PM: Chief Sealth has just scored for the first time, midway through the third quarter. WSHS 22, CSIHS 6.
9:02 PM: End of third quarter, still 22-6.
9:22 PM: And that’s the final score – it’s a second consecutive Huling Bowl win for WSHS. We’ll have the full football story later with game photos by photojournalist Oliver Hamlin.
We recently reported news of two West Seattle High School cross country athletes setting school records. The program is growing and hoping for some community help. From Circa (WSB sponsor) co-proprietor Gretchen Evans:
Circa has launched a fundraiser matching the first donated $1,000 for the WSHS cross country team. Coach Shelley Neal has grown the team from 7 to 120 boys and girls over the last 15 years. They’ve gone to state with an entire team and podiumed at their first invite last week. The best part is ANYONE can join. It only requires dedication and running your heart out. However, the costs are exorbitant. Coach Shelley buys shoes from her own pocket every year and tries to fundraise from families with the little bit of free time she has. We want to take this off her plate with a goal of at least $4,000 total.
Links for Circa’s matching fundraiser and other ways to donate can be found here.
Denny International Middle School students who play sports need new equipment and new jerseys. Denny athletic coordinator Tre’Von Mcallister-Lane asked us to ensure you know about three ways to contribute:
Denny’s Sounders Night – $5 from each purchased ticket would come back to Denny Athletics.

Sideline gear – $5 from each purchased item would come back to Denny Athletics,

Two cross country athletes from West Seattle High School set school 5K records at the Bellevue Invitational meet over the weekend, reports WSHS athletic director Corey Sorenson:
West Seattle Cross Country delivered a historic day at Saturday’s Bellevue Cross Country Invitational at Lake Sammamish State Park!
Zach O’Keefe and Evelyn Satwicz each established new West Seattle 5K school records:
Zach O’Keefe — 15:53.16
Evelyn Satwicz — 18:41.88The Wildcats also turned in two strong team performances, with the girls finishing fifth and the boys placing sixth.
Congratulations to Zach, Evelyn, and the entire West Seattle Cross Country program!

Huge night for West Seattle High School quarterback Carlos Patino (above) as the Wildcats scored their first football win of the season, 54-14 over Lincoln last night at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex. Patino threw for 7 touchdowns and ran one in too.; the defense scored a safety and Grady Scheff caught an interception. Justice Nguyen caught three touchdowns while Scheff and Cohen Cicero caught two each. Here’s Scheff running past Lincoln defenders after catching a pass from Patino to score a touchdown on the opening drive:

The Wildcats are home again next week, 7 pm Friday (September 25) vs. Roosevelt at NCSWAC,
After playing on the road this afternoon, the West Seattle High School Wildcats are still looking for their first win of the season. Final score at the Southeast Athletic Complex was Rainier Beach HS 55, WSHS 0. Next week the Wildcats play Lincoln at home, 7 pm Friday (September 18) at Nino Cantu SW Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).
More than 100 golfers arrived at West Seattle Golf Course just after sunrise this morning for the first-ever West Seattle YMCA Golf Tournament, raising money to ensure more community members can access programs to help them live healthy lives.
They started with a “mega-putt,” where a prize awaited the golfer who got the closest to a hole in the center of the putting green:
But before that, they paused in observance of today’s 25th anniversary of 9/11, listening to former NFL player and current Y executive Greg Lewis talk about the spirit of service that arose in the wake of the attacks, and is carried on by organizations like the Y with the help of supporters like those participating in the tournament:
About six hours later, they gathered for lunch and awards:
And they were joined by guest speaker City Councilmember Rob Saka:
He extolled the virtues of the Y and presented a proclamation:
The Y presented the golf tournament with sponsorship support from Nucor (which like the Y is also a WSB sponsor):
West Seattle/Fauntleroy branch executive Cleveland King – above right with Nucor’s Seattle general manager Mark Davis – said the proceeds will support a wide variety of the people the Y assists, from domestic-violence survivors to students who need life-saving swim lessons, and more.

Chief Sealth International High School students and other fans offered a variety of reasons to cheer in the early going of the Seahawks’ first home game of the season tonight.
They hosted the Roosevelt HS Rough Riders at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex.

Our photographer was there for part of the first half. Chief Sealth was down 10-0 at halftime.
In the second half, head coach Daron Camacho‘s Seahawks managed to get six points on the scoreboard – their first points of the season – but Roosevelt added points too, and left with the win, 31-6.
Next week, Chief Sealth is on the road vs. Ballard HS (7 pm Friday, September 18).
Quick youth-sports announcement: West Seattle Lacrosse is looking for coaches – high-school girls assistant coach, high-school boys head and assistant coaches, 3rd/4th grade girls’ coach. Contact westseattlelax@gmail.com with any questions and/or interestl
Our second stop on Friday night football rounds was Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex.
That’s where West Seattle High School opened their varsity-football season by hosting Eastside Catholic.
The Crusaders were a tough foe, though, and the Wildcats came away with a loss, 47-12.
Next week they’ll be on the road, playing Rainier Beach at noon Saturday, September 12, at Southeast Athletic Complex.
With both local high-school varsity football teams playing on the peninsula Friday night, we were able to drop in on both games.
First stop, West Seattle Stadium, where Chief Sealth International High School was the visiting team, facing Seattle Prep.
We spotted a high-profile spectator on the sidelines – below is first-year Seattle Public Schools superintendent Ben Shuldiner with longtime Chief Sealth athletic director Ernest Policarpio:
Going into halftime, the Seahawks were down 17-0.
Fans and Cheerhawks remained hopeful.
But CSIHS didn’t score in the second half either, and the final score was Prep 30, Chief Sealth 0. Next game is Thursday (September 10), 6 pm, hosting Roosevelt at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).
Both local high-school football teams have season-opener games tonight, both in West Seattle.
WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL: The Wildcats open their season against Eastside Catholic, 7 pm at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).
CHIEF SEALTH INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL: The Seahawks open their season against Seattle Prep, 7 pm at West Seattle Stadium (4470 35th SW, Prep’s home field, so CSIHS is the visiting team).

West Seattle Little League‘s 11U Softball All-Stars won their historic softball championship on Saturday 25+ miles away in Gig Harbor – so many hometown fans didn’t get to be there to cheer for them – but this afternoon at Bar-S, the players and their supporters got to make up for that. The players were introduced during a break in play in the state tournament WSLL is currenly hosting. Then they unveiled their championship banner in its spot along the banners from WSLL’s two baseball state championships:
And before the brief celebration wrapped up, the group shot:
Proud parents, grandparents, coaches, etc. were there to record the moment:
Among them was District 1 City Councilmember Rob Saka, whose daughter Maeve is on the championship team. As noted in our West Seattle Grand Parade coverage two Saturdays ago, he walked in the parade with the team, handing out LOVE SOFTBALL stickers to spectators.
SIDE NOTE: Though WSLL doesn’t have a team in the state tournament it’s hosting for a younger group of players, it’s fun to watch and you’re welcome to come claim a spot on the bleachers this week – here’s the bracket with teams and times.

Congratulations to the 11U Softball All-Stars of West Seattle Little League, who became state champions on Saturday, also earning a place in WSLL history as the league’s first state champs in softball. Here’s the report sent to us to share with you:
West Seattle Little League (WSLL) is proud to celebrate an incredible milestone as our 11U All-Star Softball team captured the 2026 Washington State Championship title on Saturday.
After losing its opening game, WSLL battled through the consolation bracket, earning a spot back in the championship game. The team defeated opponents by a combined score of 55-10, going 6-1 in the state tournament, playing seven games in seven days. They defeated the same team that handed them their first loss, not once, but twice, to claim the state title.
This championship marks a historic achievement for WSLL softball. The league launched its softball program in 2022, making this the program’s first-ever state championship. It is also just the third state title in WSLL history, joining the league’s 2017 11U Baseball State Championship and 2018 12U Baseball State Championship.
WSLL sent three All-Star teams to compete in the state tournament this season – 11U Softball: state champions; 11U Baseball: third place; and 12U Baseball: finished with a 2–2 record.
WSLL is also proud to host the Washington State 8/9/10 Softball Tournament at Bar-S Playfield (6425 SW Admiral Way) now through August 1. Stop by to watch some great Little League softball [schedule here], or volunteer to help make the tournament a success. To get involved, email info@westseattlelittleleague.com.
The WSLL team won the championship in Gig Harbor with a 4-1 victory over Magnolia/Northeast Seattle.
