WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: About the foot pursuit in High Point

Got a question about an incident about an hour ago in High Point in which police were running after a suspect. They arrested a 36-year-old man for investigation of attempted domestic-violence burglary. The incident began with a 911 call reporting that a man was trying to break into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment by kicking the door down. She was inside at the time. No injuries reported. The arrest was reported to have happened near 35th and Raymond.

VIDEO: Goat, lions, lanterns at West Seattle Vietnamese Cultural Center Children’s Moonlight Festival

(WSB photos/video)

Remember Friday’s saga of the stray goat on Delridge? The goat was back home at the West Seattle Vietnamese Cultural Center this afternoon for some special attention from visitors during the Children’s Moonlight Festival (Tết Nhi Đồng).

The “creatures” who drew even more attention were the lion dancers from Vovinam Burien:

Described as symbols of courage – “powerful guardians” – the lions danced around the all-ages crowd that filled the center’s courtyard:

Vovinam Burien also presented a martial-arts demonstration, with individuals and small groups, instructors as well as students, showing their moves:

Center director Lee Bui welcomed the crowd to what he declared was a “celebration of children”:

The centerpiece of the celebration was a giveaway of lanterns in honor of the moonlight in the name of the festival, which took place under a gray sky rather than silver moonlight, but featured a folk tale princess distributing the lanterns:

Photos preceded the promised lantern parade:

The princess led participants around the grounds of the center (which is at 2236 SW Orchard, just north of The Home Depot):

Other activities were offered, as well as food, for a fun afternoon. The center has several public events each year, listed here, and is open for public visits many Saturdays, noon-3 pm.

HAPPENING NOW: Information, ideas, inspiration at Bend It Like Booker, year two

Producing a ~25-hour event for an in-person and online audience can be a challenge, so this year’s “Bend It Like Booker“ got off to a later-than-planned start this morning, but we arrived in time for organizer Rachel Glass‘s welcome:

We stayed for an hour-plus to hear the first two speakers – King County Elections Director Julie Wise aimed to deliver a reassuring sheaf of information about the upcoming election including how ballots are processed and protected

She reiterated what we’ve heard other election officials stress this season – as soon as you get your ballot (they go out October 14), vote and turn it in – preferably at a ballot box (they open October 15), but if you must use the USPS, no later than a week before Election Day (November 3).

Second speaker was White Center lawyer Vicente Omar Barraza, whose topic was “Welfare Cheese Makes America Great.” Barraza described himself as son of a drug dealer and alcoholic, and beneficiary of govenment assistance that should not be begrudged to those who need it, particularly in light of the rich people who are benefiting from government generosity far more amply:

“Bend It Like Booker” will continue with nonstop speakers, performers, and presenters until 11 am Sunday at the Machinists Union Hall in South Park (9125 15th Place S.) and online.

see our preview for the organizer’s recommendations about highlights in the hours ahead, though she says any time will be a good time to tune in/show up. Get your ticket – online and/or in-person – here.

FOLLOWUP: Buses back on Barton

For the first time in almost six months, buses are back on SW Barton alongside Roxhill Park starting today, after the layover zone was repaved with concrete. The buses had been rerouted to SW Trenton during the work, which finished ahead of schedule. Metro was originally planning to keep them on Trenton until next spring’s service change, because the completion wasn’t a sure bet in time to make the recent fall service change, but Metro then decided they could move the buses back to Barton now after all, and we just went over to verify that it has indeed happened.
