West Seattle, Washington
23 Sunday
WEST SEATTLE ART WALK: The spring lineup for the West Seattle Art Walk makes its debut tonight – more than 40 venues around West Seattle. In addition to what we mentioned in our Tuesday preview, you can mix art and wine, with photographers showing at both the newly opened Bin 41 and at West Seattle Cellars (tastings at both shops). There’s student art at The Kenney, hand-screened poster art at Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor), and a free photo for your Facebook profile if you visit Gail Ann Photography in Fauntleroy. The Art Walk runs 6-9 pm; venues are listed (with many more previews, including samples of the artists’ work!) at wsartwalk.com.
OPEN HOUSE AT M3 BODYWORKS: While you’re out for Art Walk, you can also stop by the Open House and meet the massage therapists of longtime WSB sponsor M3 Bodyworks. The M3 Open House also includes art, in keeping with the night’s theme – paintings by Desirae Hester. M3 is at 5410 California SW (upstairs), and welcomes you to stop by between 6-9 pm (open house details are here; also note, M3 has a coupon on the WSB Coupons page).
PARKS BOARD: The meeting’s downtown as usual, but we track the Seattle Board of Park Commissioners because there’s so much Seattle Parks property in West Seattle. Last meeting included a dire budget briefing (WSB coverage here), but there’s no formal budget update on tonight’s agenda – scheduled items include a briefing on park/open space acquisition and an update on encroachment on Parks land. 7 pm at Denny Park.
WEATHER NOTE: As mentioned last night, there’s an ongoing chance of some “wet snow” in showers tonight/tomorrow (Scott C, who commutes north, tells us he encountered some “leaving West Seattle” this morning). We’ll keep close watch on the forecast updates at midday, midafternoon and midevening.
WEST SEATTLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AWARDS: This morning at Salty’s on Alki, the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce has its annual Awards Breakfast. This year’s honorees were announced last month: Nancy Woodland from WestSide Baby is the Community Hero of the Year, Chief Sealth High School basketball coach Colin Slingsby is Westsider of the Year (a new award), and WSB is honored to be accepting the Business of the Year award. The event starts at 7:30 am.
SOUTHWEST DISTRICT COUNCIL: Reps from community councils and other major organizations around western West Seattle – what the city calls the Southwest District – meet at 7 pm in the South Seattle Community College (WSB sponsor) board room. The agenda includes City Council President Richard Conlin and a presentation/discussion of the Admiral Neighborhood Plan, as the SWDC starts a months-long look at the neighborhoods in its jurisidiction that have such plans.
WESTWOOD NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL: Three big topics on the agenda for this group, 7 pm at Southwest Community Center: An update on Metro’s RapidRide and how it will serve the Westwood area; the future P-Patch at 34th/Barton; and teen drinking. More at the WNC site, www.scn.org/westwood.
(ADDED) FINE FILMS AT FRESHY’S: Screening tonight at Freshy’s Coffee in the Admiral District, 7 pm – “Jackie Chan Kung Fu!” as the announcement puts it – “Legend of Drunken Master.” Here’s the Facebook event invite.

Not much on the calendar this Tuesday aside from the regular recurring events, though those are certainly worth noting – 8 pm rock ‘n’ roll trivia at Feedback Lounge (which celebrates its 1st anniversary later this month!) and 6 pm open turntables at Skylark Café and Club (both WSB sponsors), and in The Junction, Shadowland hosts its regular songwriters’ showcase. One item of note on the City Council calendar this afternoon: the Regional Development and Sustainability Committee will take up a resolution formalizing the city’s “potential” interest in a White Center (and vicinity) annexation vote in November 2011 – pushed back from Mayor McGinn‘s original pursuit of a vote this year, after a financial review last month suggested annexation could be too costly to pursue in the current budget crunch. The meeting’s at 2 pm and will be live on cable and online via Seattle Channel.
On this Easter Sunday/second-to-last night of Passover, here are some of the West Seattle highlights:
ANNUAL EASTER MORNING SUNRISE SERVICE: Forest Lawn, 6701 30th SW (map), 6:30 am. Sponsored by the West Seattle Ministerial Association, which says Holy Rosary‘s Father John Madigan will today become the first Roman Catholic priest to preach at the nondenominational tradition. Outdoors unless it’s raining, in which case it’s in the chapel; refreshments afterward.
OTHER CHURCH HIGHLIGHTS: Another outdoor tradition, West Seattle’s three UCC churches have a sunrise service at 7 am on Alki Beach (east of the Bathhouse) … Many churches have breakfasts and egg hunts, including WSB sponsor Tibbetts United Methodist Church, where breakfast is served 8-9:45, preceding 10 am service, which is followed by their egg hunt …
EASTER BRUNCH: Many more West Seattle restaurants serving brunch every weekend this year than last – it’s been a popular addition recently. One hotspot is WSB sponsor Skylark Café and Club, which serves brunch 9 am-3 pm; newly opened Heartland Café started taking reservations Friday so don’t show up without calling to see if any reservations are left; you can find Junction brunch ideas on the West Seattle Junction Association website; the fabled Salty’s on Alki buffet is being offered morning till night and has “prime … seating” reservable for parties of 4 or fewer, per Salty’s Facebook page.
SUNDAY SHOPPING: No holiday break for West Seattle Farmers’ Market, 10 am-2 pm, The Junction (44th/Alaska), as always (here’s today’s Ripe ‘n’ Ready list of what’s new) … It’s the third and final day of the spring sale at Alki Bike and Board (details here) … New wine shop Bin 41 wraps up its four-day grand-opening party with Pinot Noir tastings 11 am-2 pm … Avalon Glassworks is open and demonstrating glass-blowing 1-5 pm.
EGG HUNTS: The storm lifted just in time. The list’s on the WSB Easter page, but in short – West Seattle Thriftway (indoors) at 9 am, all West Seattle community centers at 10 am, the Eastridge-sponsored hunt at Lincoln Park at 11 am. (*And a few minutes after we published this, C&P Coffee sent word it’s having an indoor hunt at 10 am.)
PANCAKE BREAKFASTS: Alki and Hiawatha Community Centers are also having pancake breakfasts ($4/person) starting at 8:30 am.
LOCAL STUDENTS PLAY BASEBALL AT THE SAFE: West Seattle High School plays Auburn Mountainview at Safeco Field at 12:30 pm. Admission is free; gates open at 11:30 am.
And two sales to mention …

MS-FIGHTING GARAGE SALE: One week before this year’s MS Walk in Seattle, Lisa‘s team (shown in a photo from last year) is having a garage sale today in West Seattle for one last fundraising boost. 9 am-3 pm, alley behind 3040 46th Avenue SW (map).
HOMEMADE BRIGADE: The bazaar-style gathering of local craftsfolk is back at Freshy’s Coffee in Admiral, starting at 10 am.
ALKI BIKE AND BOARD: Its annual spring sale continues today; full details online,, including snow gear up to 70% off (even as the mountain snow continues).
WHITE CENTER CAMBODIAN FESTIVAL: A big event just south of West Seattle – 10:30 am-5 pm, on 98th SW east of 16th SW (map), it’s the annual Cambodian New Year Festival; more here.

(Storm-watching seagull at Alki, photographed by Cheryl, from the WSB Flickr group)
WINDY AND WET: The latest forecast has the city under a “wind advisory,” with 50 mph gusts possible. The rain is supposed to ease a bit this afternoon, even as the wind picks up (projected for “midday”). We’ll track the forecast and any weather-related problems as the day goes on; here’s how to contact us if anything happens you want others to know about.
HEARTLAND CAFE’ OPENING DAY: The new Admiral restaurant offering homestyle Midwestern food (and the Benbow Room, in a nod to the building’s past) will open its doors to the public at 3 this afternoon. Here’s our preview from earlier this week.
“WAY OF THE CROSS”: We’re checking with organizers to see if the weather is going to change the plan for this nondenominational Good Friday walk in The Junction at noon. Here’s our original preview. 10:27 UPDATE: From Rev. Peter DeVeau at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church:
We’ll meet at the corner of southwest corner of SW Alaska and California Ave SW at noon. If the weather is too windy and wet we’ll walk up to “Torn,” 4506 California Ave SW. The Skate Church in the Junction is providing a place out of the storm should this be needed. We are thankful for this act of radical welcome and hospitality.
FLASHLIGHT EGG HUNTS: These are scheduled tonight at two West Seattle community centers and we’ll also be checking on their status – for now, see the schedule on the WSB Easter page.
HIGH POINT NEIGHBORHOOD NIGHT: If you live in the High Point area, you’re invited to the HP Neighborhood Center 7-9 pm for the next Neighborhood Night event – more on the HP Neighborhood Association’s Facebook page.
More on the WSB Events page; tomorrow’s egg-hunt schedule (and more) on the Easter page.

(Wednesday photo by Trileigh, looking north from Lincoln Park toward Alki Point)
We start with a weather note – today should be OK, but the National Weather Service has the city under a High Wind Watch for tomorrow morning-afternoon. Gusts could exceed 50 mph. We’ll keep tracking this through the forecast cycles today (which update at mid-morning, mid-afternoon, and mid-evening).
PARK RULES: Remember the controversy a couple months ago – particularly, to ban smoking or not to ban smoking? The final version of the Seattle Parks Code of Conduct takes effect today, with smoking restricted but not banned. Here are the highlights of what’s now against the rules, from a Parks reminder:
* Possession of glass containers at athletic fields, beaches, or children’s playgrounds;
* Smoking, chewing, or other tobacco use within 25 feet of other park patrons and or at play areas, beaches, playgrounds, and picnic areas;
* Conduct that poses a risk of harm to any person or property; and
* Possession of explosives, acid, or any other article or material capable of causing serious harm to others.
SWINERY REOPENS: After a month and a half, the Swinery reopens today. On their website, they say they are opening though their kitchen work isn’t done yet. And proprietor Gabriel Claycamp acknowledges some of their past problems – as well as discussing current and future plans – in a close-up story you’ll see here later this morning.
TWO WINE-TASTING EVENTS: It’s been open a few weeks, but the new Junction wine shop Bin 41 starts its official grand-opening celebration today, with a 5-8 pm wine tasting featuring West Seattle winemakers Chris Gorman and Darby English. And further south on California SW, West Seattle Cellars marks its 15th anniversary today, with one of its regular Thursday night tastings, 5:30-8 pm – eight wines from their Collector’s Club wil be poured tonight.
TRASH TALKS UPDATE: Though the Waste Management contract expired overnight, Teamsters Local 174 has agreed not to call a strike, for now. So drivers remain on the job. Here’s the latest from our citywide-news partners at the Seattle Times.

(Hummingbird photographed by Tom Kelley near 40th/Thistle)

Here’s our preview.
ALCOHOL CRACKDOWN? On the West Seattle side of the White Center business district, WC-area business owners will gather tonight for a forum on “Options for Managing Homeless, Chronic Alcoholics in White Center.” Discussion topics include “possible ban of certain alcohol brands in White Center.” 6:30 pm, Triangle Pub.

Both events are open to all – details here.

FAUNTLEROY PROTECTION: During the power outage two days ago, that truck was a reminder of what lies between millions of gallons of wastewater coursing beneath the peninsula, and the countless gallons of seawater out in Puget Sound: Not much. The truck took a generator to stop an overflow from the Murray pump station at Lowman Beach, one of two that are part of King County Wastewater Treatment‘s Combined Sewer Overflow projects. The other one is the Barton pump station area, by the ferry dock, and that’s the subject of a meeting TONIGHT, 6 pm, Southwest Community Center. The county still has to decide how to prevent overflows, and needs your thoughts on the 3 alternatives – which are detailed here (including a potential underground tank at the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse site).
ALKI AVENUE LANDSCAPING: We’ve received a few recent questions about the new landscaping along part of Alki Avenue SW. If you’re curious about it, come hear about it firsthand from Seattle Parks’ Carol Baker, during tonight’s Alki Community Council meeting, 7 pm at Alki UCC Church at 6115 SW Hinds. Also scheduled: Seattle School Board rep Steve Sundquist (coming off an intense board meeting Wednesday night).
LATE ADDITION (11:23 am) – got word from C & P Coffee that student poets from Denny Middle School will read their work at the coffeehouse tonight at 6.
What else is up? The WSB Events calendar is here.

Sending that photo of last night’s rainbow, Edgar from Captive Eye Media wondered if leprechauns would be finding the pot o’ gold at that SW Dakota playground. No reports of that yet. But Frances at Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor, with their Daylight Saving Time sale continuing till Sunday) did find the green line down the middle of 41st SW, north of Admiral:

Now, the highlights:
JAIL AGREEMENT ON SEATTLE CITY COUNCIL AGENDA: You’ve probably heard about the “aggressive panhandling” law coming up for a public hearing at today’s meeting of the City Council’s Public Safety and Education Committee. But another item on the agenda might be of even more interest in West Seattle: The city’s planned extension of its jail-services agreement with King County – extending it till 2016 – which is part of what took a proposed new municipal jail (with a West Seattle site under consideration) off the fast track. The committee meets at 9:30 am and will be live at seattlechannel.org (cable channel 21).
BRING MORE “SEATTLE FREE SCHOOL” CLASSES OUT WEST: 6:45 tonight at the West Seattle (Admiral) Library branch, you can join a class on how to facilitate a Seattle Free School class to share your skills with the community; SFS is hoping to offer more classes here, but that means they need instructors to offer them! This class, of course, is free. Sign up here.
DELRIDGE NEIGHBORHOODS DISTRICT COUNCIL: 7 pm tonight at Youngstown Arts Center, reps from community groups and organizations around eastern West Seattle get together for their monthly meeting. Tonight’s agenda includes City Councilmember Sally Bagshaw, an update on Camp Long Lodge renovations, and a presentation by White Center residents supporting annexation by Seattle (as Mayor McGinn proposes a vote in northern North Highline this fall).
More, with a few St. Patrick’s Day nightlife notes (including a big slate with food and drink specials at Feedback Lounge [WSB sponsor], plus the schedule at West Seattle’s only Irish pub), in the WSB Events calendar.
