Another note from last night’s Delridge Neighborhoods District Council meeting – Youngstown Cultural Arts Center‘s Randy Engstrom extended a West Seattle-wide invitation (and beyond!) to the All-Access Showcase event tomorrow night – and we have additional information today from Youngstown program director Alberto Mejia. From 6-8:30 pm, you can go check out everything from music to breakdancing to spoken-word art to visual art to “do-it-yourself organic gardening” in the historic building at 4408 Delridge Way SW (map). All-Access is the free after-school program that engages hundreds of young people in a wide range of activities, and this showcase is the result of the work they’ve been doing since the first of the year. It’s free, and you’re encouraged to drop by and sample the students’ amazing achievements. (Wander the Youngstown halls, too, if you haven’t been there before – they’re laden with history, art, and information.)
They’re known best for the art of hairstyling – but tonight,Illusions Hair Design (longtime WSB sponsor) branched out, staying open a few hours extra to show and sell creations — including paintings and jewelry — from the Circle of Friends for Mental Health. Among those welcoming guests was Illusions proprietor Sue Lindblom, whose salon is celebrating its anniversary this month:
Circle of Friends offers classes in visual arts, music and writing to those dealing with mental illness – a category that the group says can include more than a fourth of all American adults in any given year. Visitors to Illusions tonight not only got to browse and view, they also were treated to live music:

The monthly West Seattle Art Walk is more than a night for admiring art. At Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in North Delridge last night, it was also an occasion for borrowing it, as the Art Lending Library opened for the night. It’s been a year since the ALL made its debut – in this June 2009 story, artist Seth Damm explained it on video, and last night he was busy explaining it to prospective borrowers:

The Art Walk is also often a night for music. At wine shop Bin 41 (WSB sponsor) in The Junction, along with watercolors by Lee Copeland, we found Red Dog:

CAPERS’ Lisa Myers explains that Jennifer “is donating 20% of her art sales to the National Wildlife Federation for sealife rescue in the Gulf [of Mexico] through June 24th. … She has just released a heron, nautilus, sea fan and whale as part of her growing collection of linoleum cut prints.”

For almost two decades of Sunday mornings, Seattle Times readers had the chance to take a humor break courtesy of columnist Steve Johnston. He’s now a resident of West Seattle – at Park West Skilled Nursing Center, because of health challenges – but has just achieved a milestone, three years after leaving the Times: He’s a published author. Dozens of student artists from West Seattle’s high schools are showing their work in the ArtsWest gallery through tomorrow (noon-7 pm daily), including Chief Sealth International High School student Arnoldo Alvarado, one of the artists on hand for a special reception there last night, as was Matthew Wood from Seattle Lutheran High School:
The reception also included an announcement of the art-show winners:

The broadcast ended before sunset, but the live music rocked on long into Friday night during KEXP Radio‘s Hood-to-Hood Challenge victory party for West Seattle (the result of this neighborhood donating more than any other during last year’s pledge drive). Top photo, Caspar Babypants (West Seattleite Chris Ballew) delighted the family crowd late this afternoon at Cupcake Royale (WSB sponsor), where kids got to create art while not jumping with the beat to performers that also included The Board of Education and The Not-Its (see our video clip from their set in our midday report).

In June of last year, KEXP Radio announced that West Seattle listeners had donated more money than any other neighborhood in their Hood-to-Hood Challenge – and therefore would get a victory party. You might have noticed SIFF’s on the marquee at the Admiral Theater – and the festival itself is less than two weeks away. Last year, the Seattle International Film Festival had showings at West Seattle’s historic moviehouse for the first time ever, and this year it’s back. 19 SIFF films will be shown at The Admiral – they’re listed here.
