Election 2011: How West Seattle voted on liquor initiative

Our partners at the Seattle Times have just made maps breaking out the vote around the region on the two most-discussed statewide initiatives in last month’s elections, liquor privatization (I-1183) and tolling (I-1125). The graphic above is taken from one of the maps published by the Times – green areas supported I-1183 (the darker the green, the stronger the support), red/pink areas did not. See both initiative breakouts here. P.S. The transition to privatized liquor sales gets into high gear this Thursday, when 1183 becomes law and would-be sellers can start applying.

West Seattle beverages: Whale Tail Ale for The Whale Trail (& others)

It was Whale Tail meets Whale Trail tonight at the Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) – hub of launch-party night for charity-benefiting Whale Tail Ale. Each establishment that sells Whale Tail chooses which nonprofit will benefit, and The Feedback chose The Whale Trail, founded by West Seattleite Donna Sandstrom (second from right), posing with Feedback co-proprietor Jeff Gilbert (left), Tony, and Gia. The Whale Trail educates people about orcas, and encourages land-based viewing. They had info on hand for Feedback visitors tonight – Lynne and Evangeline showed off the setup:

We went to White Center to check out a few other Whale Tail Ale-serving participants – like Full Tilt Ice Cream, where we found proprietor Justin Cline with Shannon:

Justin is, you may have heard, celebrating the opening of Full Tilt’s fourth store, in Ballard (more here). Across 16th SW, Company is pouring Whale Tail Ale too:

That’s Aaron and Micah, who is a brewer for Big Al Brewing, which brewed Whale Tail Ale as well as its predecessor, Löwman Brau. What’s next? You’ll have to wait and see. But check out Whale Tail first. Here’s where to get it (and who they’re donating to).

Beverages with benefits: Hotwire ‘Gobbler’ challenge, Java Bean food drive, Whale Tail Ale beneficiaries

HOTWIRE’S “GOBBLER” CHALLENGE: Starting tomorrow, if you brave “The Gobbler” at Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor), $1 will be donated to the West Seattle Food Bank. “The Gobbler” is a unique drink flavoring, involving what Hotwire proprietor Lora Swift insists is turkey gravy, cranberry syrup, and fresh orange peel, which can be added to a latté, Americano, or just plain steamed milk. Try it, then “like” Hotwire on Facebook, write “I Gobbled” on their FB wall, and they’ll post the Gobbler badge (left) on yours.

JAVA BEAN FOOD DRIVE: Tomorrow is also the start of the annual food drive at Java Bean Coffee. From owner Tony Hoyt: “Java Bean Organic Coffee House, located at 2920 SW Avalon Way, will be hosting the 21st annual Food Drive for Northwest Harvest. They will be collecting food on site from Thursday, November 10th – Tuesday, November 22nd. Thanksgiving type foods such as stuffing mix, canned yams, cranberries, peanut butter and baby food are most appreciated.”

WHALE TAIL ALE BENEFICIARIES: Before you go out tonight to party-hop the Whale Tail Ale launch events, if you’re trying to decide where to go, consider the list of which nonprofits are benefiting from sales of the new brew at which locations:

FEEDBACK LOUNGE: The Whale Trail
WEST 5: Log House Museum
SHADOWLAND: Seal Sitters
THE MISSION: Alki Elementary School
BEVERIDGE PLACE: Nature Consortium
THE BRIDGE: Hickman House
LOCOL: Roxhill Elementary
AVALON: West Seattle Food Bank
COMPANY: White Center Food Bank
BIG AL BREWING: White Center Food Bank
FULL-TILT ICE CREAM: White Center Food Bank

Tonight’s party starts at 6. But the charity cut continues throughout the span of the weeks/months Whale Tail is available.

Got an unused bike (or parts)? Donate at ‘Wine and Bikes’

No, it’s not about pedaling under the influence. Bicycles for Humanity Seattle and the Northwest Wine Academy are teaming up on November 19th to collect donated bikes/parts at an event also featuring the fall release of four new student-created wines: 2009 Cabernet Franc, 2009 Merlot, 2010 Chardonnay and 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon. Set your reminder for noon-5 pm on the 19th, South Seattle Community College, 6000 16th SW. The bikes go to South Africa, for villagers to use for work-related transportation in an area where 1 in 2 are unemployed; all types of bikes are welcome – mountain and road bikes, adult bikes, kids’ bikes.

Caffe Fiore: West Seattle’s newest coffeehouse opens Tuesday

That’s part of the loft at Caffe Fiore – opening tomorrow in a new North Admiral live/work building at 2206 California SW. Right next to West Seattle Fabric Company (WSB sponsor), whose proprietor Monica Skov was among those who dropped in for a peek at the shop tonight. They weren’t selling coffee, just opening the doors to anyone who wanted to drop by and have a look around. With the loft, it’s West Seattle’s only two-story coffeehouse. Caffe Fiore is what you might call a “micro-chain,” to take the phrase from a businessperson with whom we were talking at another event tonight; this is its fourth all-organic coffeehouse, with the other three in North Seattle Though the building is brand-new, the interior is designed to look historic upstairs – brick walls, recycled wood flooring, ironwork – and the lighting is so warm, our photos of people had to be converted to black/white, like proprietor Deming Maclise and general manager Katrine Callahan at right. You have to see it in person to appreciate it – and you can do that starting at 6 tomorrow morning (hours are listed here).

From Belgium to West Seattle: Visiting musicians @ Locöl tonight

Tonight at Locöl (35th/Kenyon) – Belgian musicians, and Belgian ale. West Seattle trumpeter/composer Chad McCullough is in the clip above (from a jazz festival last January) with Belgian musicians including the two who will join him tonight at Locöl – Bram Weijters (piano) and Piet Verbist (bass), both from Antwerp. Chad explains, “Both are really fine players, and are top-call jazz musicians in Belgium. Bram and I met in Canada at the 2009 Creative Music workshop at the Banff Centre. We’ve been playing together as much as possible for the last 3 years.” They released an album last year, “Imaginary Sketches,” on Seattle’s Origin Records, available via iTunes. Joining Chad, Bram, and Piet tonight will be Seattle drummer Matt Jorgensen. The event starts at 7:30 pm. Oh, and then there’s the beer – they’re pitting Westmalle Trappist Ale vs. Odin Belgian Strong Ale, and the publicity poster says “You can decide the winner!”

West Seattle coffee notes: Caffé Fiore, Café Osita, Sugar Rush

3 notes from the West Seattle coffee world:

CAFFE´FIORE OPENING DATE CHANGES: Last week we reported that Caffé Fiore had announced tomorrow as its opening date in a new live/work building at 2206 California SW (next to West Seattle Fabric Company [WSB sponsor]). This morning we got a note from general manager Katrine Callahan saying they’ve had to reschedule to November 8th (one week from today). The night before that (Monday 11/7), she says, “We are inviting friends, family, and all our new neighbors and community members to come on over on the evening of Nov. 7th from 6 pm-9 pm for a ‘house warming’ or rather Fiore warming party!”

CAFE´ OSITA ANNIVERSARY: Proprietor Andrea Ramirez notes on Facebook that today is the second anniversary of the shop’s opening at 35th/Webster. (Last week, you’ll recall, a thief took the tip jar; she posted an update following the story thanking everyone for their support.)

SUGAR RUSH BAKING COMPANY: As this Junction enterprise celebrates its 7th anniversary, it’s focusing on the Sugar Rush name and phasing out “Coffee to a Tea with Sugar,” says SRBC boss Jilyan Perry. So just call them Sugar Rush from now on.

Early note to everyone in the West Seattle coffee business – you’re invited to send us your planned Thanksgiving/Christmas/New Year’s hours soon as you know them, for our annual “where to get coffee on the holiday” lists! editor@westseattleblog.com

West Seattle coffee: Caffé Fiore plans to open next week

Announced online: The opening date is November 2nd for Caffé Fiore‘s Admiral District shop (ground floor of a new live/work building at 2206 California SW). We first reported their impending arrival last month. Caffé Fiore bills itself as “Seattle’s first organic coffee house”; this is its fourth location.

West Seattle scene: New neon percolating outside Freshy’s

West Seattle’s newest neon sign is at Freshy’s Coffee in the Admiral District. We got word from Western Neon that it was going up today, and caught it shortly after their crews finished. Freshy’s (2735 California SW) just celebrated its sixth anniversary last month, by the way. One thing you might not know if you’ve never been there, or haven’t been in lately – soup is on the menu, with the latest varieties often listed on their Facebook page.

West Seattle (etc.) food & drink news: 8 notes on what’s new

Eight notes from food and drink establishments around West Seattle & a bit beyond:

‘NEW’ BISTRO: Aimee Pellegrini shared that photo along with the news this week of some evolution in her Junction business, “to better reflect what we offer”: The Tuscan Tea Room is now the Tuscan Tea Room Bistro. Aimee says she has new dinner, lunch, and brunch menus, and is also planning a special wine dinner co-hosted by bin 41 on October 19th (details here). Tea service continues, too. Only one thing Aimee’s not doing any more: Floral design: “I’ve retired Romanza Floral. While I’ve enjoyed my 9 year floral career, this was my last season. I’m focusing fully on the TTR and culinary pursuits-my first love.” (4521 California SW)

NOT JUST COFFEE AND PASTRIES ANY MORE: Two blocks north, Hotwire Online Coffeehouse (WSB sponsor) is now offering a new breakfast option – an oatmeal bar – and lunch (etc.) – sandwiches (two types for starters, and one is veggie)! Read all about it in the latest Hotwire newsletter. (4410 California SW)

NEW OPTION FOR GLUTEN-FREE PIZZA: It was among the laments in comments on our report about the Junction Garlic Jim’s closure – where to get gluten-free pizza? An A-board sign outside Olympia Pizza at 5605 Delridge now declares they’re offering gluten-free pizza and pasta (their website mentions gluten-free dough too).

NEW WHITE CENTER COFFEE SHOP:

That’s Delia, of Caffé Delia. The new coffee shop soft-opened this morning; it shares space with Proletariat Pizza, and serves Spella coffee (from Portland). More info, including hours, online.

ALSO IN THE W-C: Found this one out from the WSB Forums: Ever-popular Zippy’s Giant Burgers has added sweet-potato fries. (9614 14th SW)

FRIED CHICKEN DINNER: Speaking of fried … tried the Endolyne Joe’s (WSB sponsor) Sunday night fried-chicken supper yet? Starts at 5 pm Sundays. Details/price on their website (right sidebar). (9261 45th SW)

ADDED BRUNCH: If you haven’t been to Blackboard Bistro lately – note that Blackboard no longer serves lunch, but has added weekend brunch. (3247 California SW)

HEARD ABOUT MASHIKO’S NEW ‘SIBLING’? Mashiko proprietor Hajime Sato has opened Katsu Burger in Georgetown. It serves burgers “katsu” style – with the crunchy coating you typically find on Japanese pork or chicken katsu. Read about it here, including a link to its menu. (4th Avenue S./East Marginal Way)

West Seattle coffee: New owners for Red Cup Espresso

(From left, Breanna, Eric, Samir, and Tricia)
A change of ownership at one of The Junction’s independent coffee shops, Red Cup Espresso. Now-ex-owner Tricia DiBernardo sent the photo above, plus the following note of thanks, as well as an introduction from the new owners:

Hey West Seattle!

Eric and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being supportive and loyal to our business and friends to our family. We have enjoyed this time at Red Cup immensely, but our tides are shifting and we’re moving our pursuits in other directions. It is with a happy heart, we have passed the steam wand over to long time Red Cup barista, Samir and his wife, Breanna. Please continue to support this great business and wonderful couple. See ya around the neighborhood!

Love,
Tricia, Eric and Nina

And from the new owners:

Five years ago Breanna and I moved to West Seattle and fell in love with it. Both her Mother and Grandfather have deep roots in the community, and have history throughout the area. When I first began working at Red Cup, i could tell that this is the right place for me. We are both honored to have been passed this torch & are both humbled by the kind words and positive energy sent our way by the neighborhood. She and I are excited to bring a new approach to the cafe experience, and promise to continue to provide top notch service, and delicious beverages. Thank you West Seattle and thank you Tricia, for making both of our dreams a reality. Red Cup, Repra’Zent.

Samir & Breanna Baillie

Not only are Brenna and Samir now entrepreneurs – they’re still relative newlyweds, too.

Meet the sequel to West Seattle’s own Löwman Bräu: Whale Tail Ale

Back when the Feedback Lounge (WSB sponsor) and partners announced Löwman Bräu last spring, launching not only a taste-sensation, charity-fundraising beer but also a fashion trend, they promised there would be more to come. And so today there is word of Whale Tail Ale – a “delicious, mouth-pleasing” Belgian ale, launching at 6 pm November 9th, simultaneously at the following West Seattle and White Center venues:

FEEDBACK LOUNGE • 6451 California Ave. SW
WEST 5 • 4539 California Ave. SW
MISSION • 2325 California Ave. SW
SHADOWLAND • 4458 California Ave. SW
BIG AL BREWING • 9832 14th Ave. SW
LOCÖL • 7902 35th Ave. SW
THE BRIDGE • 4439 35th Ave. SW
BEVERIDGE PLACE PUB • 6413 California Ave. SW
COMPANY • 9608 16th Ave SW
FULL-TILT ICE CREAM • 9629 16th Ave SW
AVALON • 2940 SW Avalon Way

Says the official news release (which you can read in its entirety here), “If the rest of Seattle wants to taste it, they have to come across the bridge to get it. (Note to downtowners, bring lots of tourist cash.)” Like Löwman Bräu, Whale Tail Ale is crafted by Big Al Brewing, and its logo et al is the work of The Feedback’s creative genius Jeff Gilbert.

Video: Inside new West Seattle liquor store, opening tomorrow

The new West Seattle Junction liquor store opens 10 am tomorrow – after the old one closes at 9 pm tonight. Judging by what we saw during a drop-by-and-take-photos media preview today, it’s ready to go already. Our video, above, is a casual walkthrough, looking at the shelves and shelves … and shelves … of bottles, not to mention the “open cooler” of craft beer (including many Washington brands):

This isn’t just a new liquor store; it’s the state’s first “premier” store, and Liquor Control Board officials were up from Olympia, bursting with pride. They are also trying to make a major point – boosting the selection of brands in the wake of voter rejection of liquor privatization, in hopes of showing you can have a monopoly and still be customer-sensitive. Molly Wheeler is the manager, a 14-year LCB employee who says running this store is a dream come true, and explains more about what it’s offering:

The store concept isn’t all that’s new – the state is about to start offering liquor-tasting events, and the first one at this store is this Saturday, 4-6 pm; they’ll have tastings every week, same time (this month’s schedule, including the list of what’s offered for tasting, is here). The store is at 41st/Alaska in Capco Plaza, same building as QFC and the future home of another business moving from elsewhere in The Junction, Petco, which will be next to the liquor store on the lower level at the same corner.

OutWest Bar followup: Sign’s up, ‘grand opening’ this weekend

Update on OutWest Bar, which opened for business at 5401 California SW, albeit in “soft open” mode, last Thursday (as reported here): WSB contributor Keri DeTore says the awning’s finally been redone with the LGBT-friendly bar’s name (we saw it being painted just yesterday) and co-owners Bob Lunke and Chad Gabelein have announced their grand opening for this weekend — Friday and Saturday nights. Their official operating hours are settled, too – Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday 4 pm to midnight, Friday and Saturday 4 pm to 2 am, Sundays 4 pm to midnight.

OutWest Bar opens: ‘Welcome to your gay and lesbian bar …’

Story and photos by Keri DeTore
Reporting for West Seattle Blog

Though butcher paper is still on the windows, the sign on the front door of OutWest Bar reads, “Yes, we’re open!”

By 4:00 today, patrons such as Glenn Bafia were already seated at the copper-topped bar and in the booths for OutWest’s “soft open” in the former Westside Pharmacy space at California/Brandon. He said, “I’m very excited that the gay and lesbian community has a bar in West Seattle that we can hang out in.”

Co-owner Bob Lunke greeted guests with “Welcome to your gay and lesbian bar in West Seattle!” and then proceeded to figure out how to use the cash register.

Another patron, who followed OutWest Bar’s journey via Facebook, said he came “all the way from Magnolia” to check it out.

Neighbor Lisa Laughlin says she’s been watching it “come to life. I’m very excited that it’s now open—it’s good to have a bar I can walk home from!” while Dawn Leverett, West Seattle Windermere agent, added, “West Seattle loves to support restaurants and bars and we’re excited about new venues. In this economy it’s great to see a small business open — these are the backbone of the economy. We’re very happy to have the OutWest Bar in West Seattle.”

Co-owners Lunke and Chad Gabelein still anticipate a grand opening sometime in the next two weeks. (Per their FB page, Happy Hour is 4-6 pm, Tuesdays-Fridays.) For more backstory about OutWest Bar, see our stories from May (here) and December (here).

OutWest Bar update: Hoping to officially open within 2 weeks

Another followup on a place-in-progress that people have been asking us about: OutWest Bar at California/Brandon is getting close to opening its doors. WSB contributor Keri DeTore first reported in May about its plan to be LGBT-friendly, and she’s been checking back with its proprietors; tonight, she reports that co-owners Bob Lunke and Chad Gabelein are busily working to put the finishing touches on OutWest Bar in anticipation of a soft opening sometime next week. The walls are painted a deep red, the kitchen is nearly finished, and furniture is being delivered. The establishment described by Bob and Chad as “like a community center for the gay and lesbian community and their straight friends” will open to the public in the next two weeks.

West Seattle businesses: The Cask owners decide to stay

Owners of The Cask in the Admiral District have changed their mind after three months – they are NOT going to sell it and move away, after all – Shon MacDughlas and Dee Pope say they’re staying. They sent us this announcement late today:

As many of you may know, we were in the process of moving to Florida and therefore have had the The Cask up for sale.

Circumstances have recently changed which have allowed us to stay in Sea and keep The Cask!!! Now that we are staying, we will officially celebrate our one-year anniversary in September. More details to come later this month. Thank you all for your support and your continued patronage. See you soon!

2 brewery updates: Elliott Bay ‘facelift’ done; Big Al’s birthday

(7/29/2011 Twitpic from @ElliottBay_Beer)
ELLIOTT BAY: Back in May, we reported on the early stages of the Elliott Bay Brewery and Pub facade facelift in The Junction – as owner Todd Carden uncovered history out front, including this name:

(WSB photo from May 2011)
WSB commenters sleuthed it out in a big way, and figured out fast who GJ Vayhinger was! Now, the project is done, said EBB as it tweeted the top photo on Friday.

And from White Center:

BIG AL’S BIRTHDAY: Three years since Big Al Brewing opened on 14th SW as part of the White Center renaissance – and this weekend, they’re celebrating, both days, including a “Family Fun Day” tomorrow with popular kindie rockers The Not-Its performing at 2 pm. Full details from the West Seattle-headquartered Washington Beer Blog.

West Seattle businesses: The Beer Junction taps new location

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

Just after celebrating its first anniversary, The Beer Junction is getting ready to move to a new location.

Though Year 1 has seen “faster than expected” growth, according to owner Morgan Herzog, that’s not why his store is moving.

It’s in one of the buildings that will be torn down for construction of the Conner Homes California/Alaska/42nd project – considered likely to start next year.

His lease wasn’t ending immediately, but Morgan says he was “excited to jump” at the chance when the perfect new location opened up:
