Update: Doors open at West Seattle’s newest business, Locöl

It’s opening night at West Seattle’s new beer/wine bar (and eatery) Locöl, as noted here last week. Before things got busy, WSB contributor Ellen Cedergreen stopped by to photograph the team at mid-afternoon (they opened at noon and will be open till 2 am, the regular hours, 7 days a week): Above, that’s Chef Meredith Abbott between business partners Shane Whittall and Kyle Duce. Chef Meredith’s resumé includes lauded mobile restaurant Skillet, so she says she’s used to cooking in cozy spaces. We outlined their kickoff menu (and what’s on tap) in our Friday preview; the chef says she’ll change soups and sandwiches monthly, and will have a board out to note specials, especially in summer. The commitment to locally procured vegetables and fruit includes West Seattle Produce as well as High Point Market Garden/P-Patch. The year-plus effort to get Locöl finished and opened brought out some far-flung support for opening day/night:

That’s Shane serving some of the afternoon crowd – including a friend of Kyle’s who flew up all the way from Irvine, California, to be here for the official opening. Locol is at 7902 35th SW (map), between Kenyon Hall and Sharon’s Westwood Florist.

Nice place, looks good, though the drink prices are rather pricey for the neighborhood. $8-$9 for a glass of wine? Yikes!

Congrats Locöl! My girlfriend and I had a wonderful time last night. It was totally worth the wait!

Congrats and Welcome Locöl! My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience last night! Everything was fabulous! Love what you are doing and what you are about. We can’t wait to bring our friends and family over when they come to visit. Very much worth the wait and we plan on making many many return visits. We love that you are in walking distnace. We wish you much success and look forward to seeing you soon, as in I am ready to go back tonight. :)

My hubbie and I went by around 9:30 pm on Opening Night- the place was full and there were smiles everywhere, staff and customers alike. We live within walking distance, and are delighted that an establishment of this quality is so close. Being a mixed couple (mostly vegetarian with an omnivore), the veggie-friendly menu is a major plus. Hope these guys make it!

I look forward to my first visit to Locöl; it sounds like a wonderful addition to West Seattle!

  • sean January 11, 2011 (8:35 pm)

Yummm, pulled pork and chard crisps with a side of wine……..:)

Went there tonight and it was HOPPING, even with the snow! How gratifying! They’re doing a terrific job; barely any bugs considering how new they are and how slammed they were. Food was delish — tried two soups, salad and sandwich. The wine that was on special was great, too!

Great job, guys! We’ll be back!

Just got back from there a bit ago. It was excellent! Nice work everyone, can’t wait to comeback!

I think I enjoyed too much of the great wine at Locol because this is my third attempt at posting this… :)

Great time tonight! The food was seriously delicious. I had the butternut squash soup and goat cheese salad. My friends had the bean soup and sandwiches. Everything tasted amazing, truly fresh. The wine was also very good. Congrats to the Locol team. You have created a neighborhood gem!

  • Heather January 12, 2011 (11:18 am)

Yeah! Welcome to the neighborhood! Hopefully you are one of the first businesses riding the wave of renovation on 35th. Call out to all you business owners out there – if we can just get some wonderful ethnic restaurants, businesses catering to kids and young adults and gathering spaces that foster community I will be happy.

Absolutely loved it. Locol is truly a gem, and certain to succeed. Far too many positives to list, plus I wouldn’t want to spoil the surprise. Quality & character in every detail. One minus, is that is could use some sound dampening. To have to yell to be heard to the person just down the bar in such a small intimate setting seemed counter-intuitive. The wood panels on the walls are beautiful, so maybe something on the ceiling? And if some customers miss having a tv, there is a really big/bright point-of-sale screen to watch in the middle of the bar. Really though, seemed like there were few, if any, bugs to work out. Way to go LOCOL, am planning a return visit asap!

I can’t wait to visit and experience Locol . It looks like it’s amazing, fun and a real treat.

Locöl is great people, wonderful atmosphere, Lazy Boy Belguim and chard chips! I need to go back soon. Drööl!!

Sorry, comment time is over.
