That’s the Rainier Beach High School tennis team, and one player works at the restaurant, so they’re having the fundraiser here. Their coach Irvin MacQuarrie is a West Seattle resident too, and explains:

The team is made up of immigrant families and we are doing a fundraiser this Wednesday night from 3-9 pm at the West Seattle Chipotle in The Junction. The team receives 50% of proceeds excluding alcohol and gift card purchases. This allows the team to buy uniforms for the kids to keep and to put on an end of the year banquet. Patrons must mention that they are there to support the team or the team doesn’t get credit.

6:45 AM: Though some snow/slush remains – pending a warming trend that’s on the way – things are getting back to normal today. No school changes. Metro’s back on its regular routes. Seattle Public Utilities‘ trash/recycling one-day delay continues.

8:04 AM Crash on Delridge north of Thistle. NB blocked, says Twitter tip.

8:15 AM: Metro says the Delridge crash is delaying buses.

8:26 AM: SDOT says Delridge is blocked both ways by the crash, though the 911 log shows Seattle Fire has cleared (which indicates no major injuries). We’re off to look.

8:41 AM: SDOT reports, and we just verified, Delridge is now clear.

9:04 AM: Out on a morning errand run, we can confirm that Waste Management IS out picking up today. We’ve seen them in Westwood and Fauntleroy so far. Weather-wise, the snowmelt is accelerating, as we’re now up to a steady rain and upper-30s temp.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: The car prowler who left tools behind

It’s been a bit quiet on the crime beat – but we do have one recent pre-snow car-prowl report, from Tracy:

Heard vehicle alarm go off at about 5:20 am on 2/5/2017. Went out to check, turned alarm off. Did not see anyone flee nor any vehicle leaving, but the motion light had been activated. Opened driver side door and discovered a small, metal nail puller sitting on driver seat. No damage to vehicle so I’m assuming I left it unlocked, but the alarm must have set. I did notice the top tray of the console was missing. Miscellaneous items were in it, but nothing important. Searched alley trash cans and area with a flashlight, but nothing. Access to the vehicle was made from the alley. Once there was daylight, a neighbor searched the alleyway and sidewalk around 44th and Hinds. A long, skinny screwdriver was found in the alley and my console tray with nearly everything in it was discarded along the sidewalk.

Reported this to the police online; received phone call afterward to set up a time to meet an officer and provide him with the prowlers’s tools which were recovered.

P.S. Calendar reminder – next West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting is in 2 weeks, 7 pm Tuesday, February 21st, at the Southwest Precinct.

 |   Delridge | Fun stuff to do | West Seattle news

By Saturday, the leftover snow is likely to be just a memory, and you’ll want to get out and enjoy the start of the weekend. Saturday happens to be Neighbor Day, with a lot going on – and you can start the day by letting somebody else make a pancake breakfast for you and your family at Delridge Community Center. 10 am-noon, $6/person, $10/couple, $20/max per family, and it all goes to help make sure more people can enjoy the programs at DCC, which is at 4501 Delridge Way SW.

VIDEO: Demolition at 3215 California SW

3T7A3407enc652px

The photo and video are from WSB photojournalist Christopher Boffoli, who reports that demolition has started at the long-vacant commercial storefronts at 3215 California SW. Here’s an aerial view:

This is south of The Swinery (which is not part of the project) and across the street from Springline Apartments (WSB sponsor); while an apartment building was once proposed on this side of the street too, the plan changed to a mix of townhouses, live-works and single-family houses. This is happening almost exactly a year after demolition to the south, where redevelopment has taken a similar pattern. It’s all in the Hanford-to-Hinds block that was upzoned in 2010.

UPDATE: Fire call in 8400 block 20th SW

IMG_1441

3:12 PM: In case you saw/heard the big response for a potential house fire in the 8400 block of 20th SW (thanks to Alan for the tip), most of the units were canceled quickly, but we’re on the way to see what we can find out.

3:21 PM: At the scene, firefighters tell us this was a small kitchen fire. No major damage, nobody hurt, and the remaining crews are working on clearing out the smoke right now.

FOLLOWUP: Debut day for West Seattle Food Bank’s new ‘shopping’-type distribution model

dairycase
(WSB photos)

It’s a big day at West Seattle Food Bank headquarters at 35th/Morgan in High Point – the first day its clients are using the brand-new “shopping” model of distribution. We told you about it back in December; thanks to community generosity, everything’s installed, and the new system is up and running, almost tripling the distribution hours each week. We just visited for a quick tour. And indeed, just like a grocery store, the food available for distribution is now set out on shelves, in bins, and in coolers, so clients can go aisle to aisle to “shop” rather than just line up and pick up.

shelves

The signs over each section have color-coding to correspond to how many of each type of food item is available to a client, depending on how many people in her/his household.

colorcards

The donations making this possible come not only from individual community members but also from local businesses – for example, Metropolitan Market (WSB sponsor) donated shopping carts:

IMG_8594

And West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) joined forces with WSFB for a big food purchase at what WSFB executive director Fran Yeatts says was an excellent discount. What’s in stock comes from a variety of sources – what they buy and what’s donated through a variety of programs including gleaned produce and federally provided “emergency food” items.

produce

New distribution hours are 9 am-1 pm Tuesdays, noon-7 pm Wednesdays, 9 am-2 pm Thursdays, 10 am-2 pm Fridays. The Baby/Child Corner hours are still 4-7 pm Wednesdays and 10 am-1 pm Thursdays. Speaking of kids – they’re still accepting donations of these popular non-food items available to families:

IMG_8595

Other ways you can help the West Seattle Food Bank: Monetary donations are the most helpful, because they have extra purchasing power beyond even what the general public can get at discount stores; and your volunteering time is priceless – some shifts are still unfilled, and right now they’re also leaning heavily on volunteers to help explain the new system to clients.

P.S. (added Wednesday) – The WS Food Bank is having an open house 3-6 pm March 25th, so you can come see this firsthand. “Beverages and appetizers will be served. Bring your children, bring a friend, everyone is welcome!”

West Seattle Helpline finds new home for Clothesline

cloth
(Photo provided by West Seattle Helpline)

One of the ways the West Seattle Helpline assists neighbors in need is via its clothing bank The Clothesline. And now, according to this announcement from Helpline executive director Chris Langeler, there’s a new and bigger home in the works for it:

We are SO EXCITED to announce that after five years of searching, we have found a new home for our free clothing store, The Clothesline!

Through a partnership with the West Seattle Christian Church, we will be moving into the first floor of what has been known as the Ginomai Building in the West Seattle Junction. The space is four times the size of our current location and will allow us to dramatically expand our services. It is also more accessible via public transit, has dedicated parking, and will result in an open, welcoming store environment for our clients and volunteers.

When the West Seattle Helpline first opened its doors in 1989, we had only a small clothing closet in our office. In 1995, the closet grew into a full-scale clothing bank called “The Clothesline,” the only free clothing store of its kind in West Seattle. Ever since, it has been a critical community resource for our neighbors in need; last year, more than 2000 adults and children recovering from hardship received more than $130,000 in clothing at no cost from The Clothesline. Whether it’s a warm coat for a child to wear to school or professional attire for a job interview, this program ensures all of our friends and neighbors don’t go without the basic necessity of safe, comfortable clothing.

We anticipate that the new Clothesline will open in late March. Details about the new Clothesline schedule, volunteer opportunities, and other ways to get involved are coming soon.

The Ginomai building is across from West Seattle Christian, on the southwest corner of 42nd and Genesee.

TRASH/RECYCLING PICKUP UPDATE: Monday customers here will have to wait until next week

FIRST REPORT, 11:53 AM: New information just in from Seattle Public Utilities about their plan for the rest of this week.

The big change for our area: If you are a Monday pickup customer, you will **NOT** get pickup today after all – nobody “south of I-90” will – here’s what SPU says today:

Commercial garbage, recycling or food/yard waste pickup resumed today across Seattle.

Collections for residential customers partially resumed today on a revised schedule based on the solid waste contractors’ assessment of neighborhood road conditions:

· Monday residential customers, north of I-90 will be collected today (Tuesday).

· Monday residential customers, south of I-90: Due to continued icy conditions, there is no residential garbage, recycling or food/yard waste pickup in these areas again today. Customers should put out materials on their next regularly scheduled pickup day (next Monday), as described below.

· Tuesday residential customers will be collected tomorrow (Wednesday), weather and road conditions permitting.

· Wednesday, Thursday and Friday services will all be delayed one day this week.

For Monday residential customers south of I-90 or other customers not serviced this week due to icy roads, please put containers out on your next regularly scheduled pickup day. Customers missed this week will be allowed to set out double their normal amount of garbage, recycling and yard waste at no additional charge, on their next scheduled collection day. Please use extra bags or boxes for the additional materials. For service updates, please check seattle.gov/util. Follow SPU on Twitter.

ADDED 4:43 PM: Commenters were wondering if this means they can put out the recycling again next Monday, or if they would have to wait another week until scheduled pickup for recycling. Marieke Rake of SPU replied to our inquiry:

For West Seattle residential customers with Monday pickup, please put out containers on your next regularly scheduled pickup day. This includes recycling even if next Monday isn’t your regular recycling day. Customers missed this week will be allowed to set out double their normal amount of garbage, recycling and yard waste at no additional charge, on their next scheduled collection day. Please use extra bags or boxes for the additional materials.

Though the snow has long stopped, its icy remnants are causing some trouble today. If you have a cancellation or change, please let us know – text 206-293-6302 or e-mail editor@westseattleblog.com – and we’ll add to this list, which starts with one cancellation, before getting to events that are still on, so far as we know:

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER, SCHOOLS: Tuesday morning updates

(QUICK LINKS: School delays hereMetro bus info here … SDOT winter-weather map map here … More traffic cams/links here)

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

5 AM: Good morning. No changes this morning from what was announced last night – most schools are on a delayed start today, including Seattle Public Schools (2 hours late) – here’s our list.

Metro says most of its buses are on regular routes (check here).

The temperature is just above freezing, with lots of slush left on non-arterials and sidewalks, so caution is in order. No new weather alerts.

After skipping pickups Monday, Seattle Public Utilities‘ trash/recycling schedule is delayed one day all week, SPU says – so if you are a Monday customer, have your carts out today.

7:42 AM: Relatively quiet morning so far. Hilly streets, not surprisingly, are the trouble spots. Evan reports via Twitter, “30th between Juneau & Brandon is icy! Multiple cars stuck.”

7:56 AM: Even if you’re not on/near a hill, give yourself time to go slowly. Our side street, which was slushy when we last drove it yesterday evening, sounds crunchy with each car going by this morning. And as commenters are discussing, sidewalks might be your biggest challenge, whatever your ultimate mode of transportation.

8:11 AM: Metro says Routes 131 (which serves Highland Park) and 132 (South Park) are back on regular routes. But we also have anecdotes in comments and via text of unannounced bus no-shows or changes in various spots, FYI.

8:22 AM: Josh reports that Delridge/Kenyon light is flashing red (this is one of the lights affected by yesterday’s power outage). Please remember … an out, or flashing, signal = all-ways stop.”

8:38 AM: From the scanner – police are being dispatched to Avalon and Genesee for a report of a jackknifed semitruck. Don’t know whether it’s blocking one, both, or neither, but we’ll head out shortly to look.

image (1)

8:50 AM: Before we could even suit up to get out the door, Matt Collins sent that photo (thank you!), which shows the location as well as the situation – on the Genesee slope between 30th and Avalon. Could take a while to clear. (Added) Here’s the view from the other side, looking east over Avalon and down Genesee, from a texter (thanks!):

IMG_0806.JPG

9:19 AM: Update via text: Genesee is cleared.

Meantime, two school notes – Our Lady of Guadalupe has now changed the plan and will be CLOSED today due to “extreme icy conditions” (OLG is at the highest elevation in the city); Madison Middle School says its tours are canceled.

12:07 PM: As just published in a separate story, SPU is now saying it will NOT get to Monday customers in this area until next week.

WEST SEATTLE SNOW: Monday night updates, and looking ahead to Tuesday

(EARLIER COVERAGE: Monday midday/afternoon here … Monday morning here … West Seattle Snow Day photo gallery here …)

6:35 PM: Tonight, along with any new weather-related incidents, we’re focused on looking ahead to tomorrow – weather, schools, and more.

SCHOOLS: We’ve already started a page for Tuesday school info, and will add whatever more we find out. (8:47 PM UPDATE: Seattle, Highline, Vashon all plan late starts)

WEATHER: While the overnight low might dip below freezing, the National Weather Service says:

Some re-freezing of moisture on untreated surfaces is expected tonight, but it will lack the sheet-of-ice quality that a hard freeze would bring.

TRANSIT: Metro says it’s staying on snow routes TFN. (7:51 PM UPDATE: C Line is back on its regular route, Metro says.)

UTILITIES: Only a handful of West Seattleites are still without power, Seattle City Light‘s outage map shows – if you are among them, be sure to contact SCL at 206-684-3000 if you haven’t already … Seattle Public Utilities plans to pick up trash/recycling/etc. on a one-day-delayed basis for the rest of the week.

*************

9:44 PM UPDATE: The National Weather Service has the snow total – for the past two days, 7.1″ at Sea-Tac Airport, the second-highest February two-day snow total since recordkeeping began in 1945; the record was 9.8″ February 16-17, 1990.

High-school basketball rescheduled for Tuesday: Added to the WSHS games (boys 5 pm, girls 7 pm Tuesday), the Seattle Lutheran HS boys (who have a 16-game win streak) will play at home at 6 pm Tuesday.

Metro buses back to regular routes in this area: Metro says its “South Seattle” zone – which includes West Seattle – is back to regular routing.

TUESDAY SCHOOL PLANS: Late start for Seattle Public Schools, others; OLG closed

(First published 6 pm; updated Tuesday morning)

Now that it’s Monday night, we’re getting some information about schools’ plans for Tuesday, and we’re collecting it all here. Keep in mind this could change if the weather does, so check back – we’ll be updating late into the night and early in the morning.

SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS: 2 hours late, school buses on snow routes, more info here (added 8:41 pm)

COMETA PLAYSCHOOL: “Open tomorrow, regular schedule, 8:45-12:45.” (added 10:29 pm)

Two individual school notes for Tuesday:

MADISON MIDDLE SCHOOL: Principal Dr. Robert Gary sent a note that today’s tours are canceled.

And from Genesee Hill Elementary, via Twitter:

When your school/district knows its plans, please e-mail or text us – editor@westseattleblog.com or 206-293-6302 – thanks!

TRASH/RECYCLING DELAYED ALL WEEK: In case you missed this news

(TUESDAY UPDATE: Monday residential customers here will NOT get pickup this week after all)

ORIGINAL MONDAY ANNOUNCEMENT: In case you missed this in our snow updates earlier today, we’re publishing the full announcement separately, since this will affect people long after the snow has melted: Since Seattle Public Utilities couldn’t get trucks out this morning, trash/recycling/etc. pickup will be delayed one day ALL WEEK. Here’s the full announcement:

Due to icy road conditions, there will be no residential or commercial garbage, recycling or food/yard waste pickup in Seattle today—Monday. Contractors will attempt to serve priority commercial locations this afternoon.

Weather and road conditions permitting, garbage, recycling, and food/yard waste service will resume Tuesday, on a revised schedule — with customers scheduled for pickup today (Monday) collected Tuesday. All remaining residential services will be delayed one day this week.

If your materials are not picked up by the end of the following day, please put them out on your next regularly scheduled pickup day. Customers missed this week will be allowed to set out double their normal amount of garbage, recycling and yard waste at no additional charge, on their next scheduled collection day. For service updates, please check seattle.gov/util. Follow SPU on Twitter.

TUESDAY UPDATE: Published here.

10:53 AM: Picking up from our first round of Monday snow-related updates, we’re launching midday coverage, right in the midst of another snow shower. Above, Tami sent the photo from 48th SW uphill (northeast) of Lowman Beach, where a tree is blocking the road.

Elsewhere, wires are down on some roads, and not always easy to see in the snow, so please be careful if you have to go out:

(Added: Kelly Kirkland’s photo of wire woes in Highland Park)

Ferries are back on schedule on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route, per WSF. 1,400+ are still without power in eastern West Seattle.

11:59 AM: Looking more like a snow-rain mix here right now, which means even more peril from branches weighed down with heavy, wet snow:

Changes for tonight: Postseason high-school basketball has been postponed. West Seattle High School games are rescheduled to Tuesday (5 pm boys, 7 pm girls).

Addition for today: West Seattle Golf Course is open for sledding until 5 pm. We have sledding photos from other areas in our West Seattle Snow Day photo gallery – and here’s one from Darryl Wolff, taken at popular Westcrest Park in Highland Park:

12:46 PM: Yes, there’s plowing, sanding, salting happening – this SDOT truck went around the corner by WSB HQ:

IMG_1428

The midmorning forecast discussion from the National Weather Service says, “From Seattle on south, the air mass will warm enough this afternoon for little or no additional snow accumulation at lower elevations.”

1:30 PM: First, re: the comment discussion about whether the USPS is delivering today – yes, they are, and here’s texted, photographic proof:

IMG_9135

Also out on the streets today – SPD, in this case helping with a stalled car on SW Graham (thanks to DD for the photo):

20170206_131002

Something NOT happening today: The mobile blood drive in The Junction has been canceled.

Also – be aware that some businesses/agencies are closed. So far, we’ve only received “open” announcements – like this one from West Seattle Autoworks (WSB sponsor):

WP_20170206_08_28_48_Pro

WSAW’s Todd Ainsworth says, “We’re open, though not at full staff and not all parts suppliers are running…”

More high-school-basketball changes: Tonight’s Seattle Lutheran game also is postponed, as are the WSHS games mentioned earlier.

You’ll want to keep your vehicle well away from snow-laden branches/trees if you can (and be careful what you’re walking under), as we’re seeing the slide-off accelerate as the temperature rises. Meantime, the road’s looking good, so we’re heading out to look around.

2:40 PM: We’ve just been around much of the peninsula, through all three Junctions, through Luna Park and Highland Park, Alki and Admiral, and the big word is: Slush. The main roads are all clear, with dirty slushy snow off to the shoulders.

We’re seeing some sunbreaks, too. (You can see more of our on-the-road photos on the WSB Twitter feed.)

Business updates: Easy Street is closing not only its café at 3 (as usual) but is closing the record store too. … West Seattle Bowl and Highstrike Grill are closing for the day at 4 pmConscious Choice Chiropractic, which earlier planned to open at 3, is just staying closed for the day.

3:01 PM UPDATE: Weather note: No more alerts in effect in our area. … Traffic note: Per scanner, tree down in 6500 block of West Marginal Way SW. (We just went through that area about half an hour ago … mostly bare and wet otherwise.)

3:15 PM: Another traffic note, from AG in comments: “18th Av SW blocked by fallen tree at SW Holden.” (If you’re looking for the SDOT traffic cams, here’s our page with the local ones that are currently working.)

Metro has already texted some cancellations for West Seattle runs this afternoon – and buses are still on reroute, going into the pm commute.

3:54 PM: City Light says the east West Seattle power outage is now down to about 500 homes/businesses, after restoring power to another 1,000. A downed tree is to blame, according to their tweet.

4:11 AM: Just announced – Seattle Public Schools CLOSED TODAY:

4:17 AM: Also just announced – Highline Public Schools CLOSED TODAY. Continuing to update our school-changes list here.

4:30 AM: Here are our usual “live” views from the bridge cameras:

(Click any view for a close-up; more cameras on the WSB Traffic page)

5:06 AM: Big power outage – more than 4,200 homes and businesses. From the City Light map:

monmornpoweroutage

Again, we’re updating school closures at a separate link (see the top of this story). We have a bus-info link up there too – Metro has snow routes in effect everywhere and has canceled some trips already.

6:00 AM: The power outage is actually affecting more than 5,100 homes and businesses – same map as above but we noticed it’s actually showing as two outages, 4,200+ and 970+. Still 11 am guesstimate for restoration, but please remember, could be later, could be earlier. (And if you DO have power – charge everything! Snow like this weighs heavy on the lines and we might see more trouble later.)

Meantime, we’re hearing about scattered road trouble on the scanner – a bus got stuck at Olson and 2nd, for example. Thanks in advance if you note a trouble spot and either let us know (text/call 206-293-6302) or post a comment … we’ll only hear it on the scanner if police are involved. Here’s a photo from The Junction, about half an hour ago – chained-up C Line bus:

bus

We’re continuing to update the school-closure list – have just heard from more local independent/parochial schools.

6:46 AM: More non-school closures – All Seattle Public Library branches (thanks, Gina) are closed today, and the downtown branch has a delayed open. Also downtown, Seattle Municipal Court is closed.

Road closure – via scanner, 8800 block of 9th SW is taped off. (Power lines down, we hear.) And thanks again to everyone sharing what they’re seeing.

We’re continuing to get scattered bus-cancellation texts/tweets (sign up for alerts if you haven’t already!) – and Megan just tweeted that “West Seattle buses are packed.” As for the weather outlook – still a chance for more snow before the day’s over. The Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 pm.

7:15 AM: Almost half the people who lost power a few hours ago just got it back.

Meanwhile, it’s starting to get light, so we’ll get a better look at all the snow. If you have to head out – please be careful on hills – via Twitter, CJ shared this look at California SW between Morgan Junction and Gatewood:

Also via Twitter (where we are also updating at @westseattleblog), Jean-Paul sent views of The Junction:

If and when you’re out later having fun, please send those photos too (editor@westseattleblog.com) – we’re hoping to build a gallery.

Couple more notes: Along with Seattle Municipal Court, King County Superior and District Courts are closed today (not in WS but in case you have business there). If you need to go to Sea-Tac Airport, check with the airline first – some cancellations are reported – info and links here. And another transportation note: Boats on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route are running late.

7:42 AM UPDATE: Just found out after checking on an e-mail inquiry – if you have Seattle Public Utilities trash/recycling/etc. pickup today, NO COLLECTION TODAY – they’re hoping to pick up tomorrow – and that means one-day delay for *everyone* this week, SPU just tweeted. More info on their website soon.

Meantime, here’s our video update from westbound Thistle to northbound California, early-daylight view of the same scene we had at the top of this story:

And as for the power outage – still 3,200+ homes/businesses out, with the restoration guesstimate remaining 11-ish (but as mentioned earlier, almost 2,000 got it back much sooner, so hold out hope). Again, this might not be the end of it – so many branches and shrubs are weighed down with snow!

8:15 AM UPDATE: For those wondering about the West Seattle Water Taxi – just got this photo via text, and word that it’s been running just fine all morning:

PART951486396575424

Another road report from a spot with no camera views – from Randy along Fauntleroy Way SW near Fairmount Park:

And if you’re taking the bus … commenters and tweeters all say it’s slow going, with scattered cancellations being reported, so patience is a prerequisite.

Weather update: Still snowing lightly where we are. National Weather Service should have its next “forecast discussion” out within an hour or so, but so far, it’s predicting snow showers will continue.

8:46 AM: We’re in the middle of a pretty good snow shower right now. Definitely going to add to the total out there. From @MetPatrick22 near the city’s highest elevation (that’s Fire Station 37 in the background):

Power outage update – More people have theirs back (thanks for the tips!) – according to the SCL outage map, about 1,400 remain without power.

School update – Still some late announcements. South Seattle College has now changed from delayed to closed for the day; we’ve updated the closure list.

9:31 AM: Also canceled today:

(Added – City Hall photo from Vicki B)

The Seattle City Council‘s briefing and full-council meetings.

Locally, West Seattle Hi-Yu has postponed tonight’s scheduled meeting; new date TBA.

Any business open/closed updates, please let us know about those too, as we will be continuing to update throughout the day – launching a midday update within the next hour or so, after we launch a photo gallery (thanks for all the great photos people are already sending!). We have heard so far from Fresh Flours Bakery in South Delridge – open! – and Kid-Friendly Footwear/Again & Again (4832 California SW; WSB sponsor), “shoveled and open”:

20170206_085643

“And we have kids’ mittens, hats, boots and outerwear, new & used. Open till 7,” they report.

10:17 AM UPDATE: We’ve also heard from Conscious Choice Chiropractic – not opening today until 3 pm – and The Bridge, which is open. We’re wrapping up this report now and will be moving to a midday report shortly.

Updates from here are in our Monday midday coverage.

Tilden usually does not take days off for snow. If you feel that you can make it to school safely, please bring your child in. Most of the staff live nearby and can walk or drive to school, even on snowy days. Please make sure your child is dressed in appropriate warm coats, hats, and mittens/gloves, as the kids will have an opportunity for extra outdoor play time in the snow with their friends.”

If you are concerned about ice in the lot, or unsure of driving to school in the snow, please know that there is no expectation on our part that you bring your child in. Your family’s safety is out main concern, and we realize that everyone’s streets, vehicles, and comfort levels are different. Please base your decision about coming to school on what is best (and safest) for you and your family.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE: We will have the parking lot gated off this morning, to preserve the lovely snow for the kids to play in. Please plan to park on the street this morning.

8:36 AM: Update –

SOUTH SEATTLE COLLEGE: Now CLOSED.

Any others? Text and/or e-mail us, 206-293-6302, editor@westseattleblog.com – thanks!

WEST SEATTLE SNOW: PM weather watch

(Scroll down for updates. For school changes, go here)

3:52 PM: After a period of what we were considering “chunky rain,” there’s more snow in the mix that’s falling right now in Upper Fauntleroy, and we’re hearing from other areas too. The National Weather Service moved up the timeline for its Winter Storm Warning announced earlier today – it’s now officially in effect. More to come.

6:40 PM: No reports of accumulating snow anywhere so far, so if you’re, oh, say, at a Super Bowl party and wondering about getting home, no problems reported yet, at least in the city.

7:11 PM: Snowing but not yet sticking here; Alyssa says it’s starting to stick near Delridge/Thistle. You can see it in the streetlights on many traffic cameras, including this one at the 35th/Fauntleroy bridge entrance:

7:25 PM: Now it’s starting to stick in a variety of places, including here. So we’ll be switching to an evening snow report soon.

7:35 PM: From outside HQ – steady snow, but the road’s still bare/wet:

8:24 PM: Rain in some places, per commenters.

8:44 PM: Photo from a comment by David in Sunrise Heights:

9:13 PM: So far, the snow’s been mostly reported at higher elevations and more in east WS than west. But the new NWS forecast discussion predicts a drop toward sea level tomorrow morning.

streetcoated

9:43 PM: Above, that’s the view outside WSB HQ in Upper Fauntleroy. Now sticking on the road. Reports continue to come primarily from The Junction southward, and more east than west, plus of course the higher hills (we’re at about 330′; the highest point in West Seattle – and the entire city – is 35th/Myrtle, 500’+).

9:55 PM: From Joshua, 25th SW on the east side of Westwood Village:

westwood

P.S. **No** school changes to report so far. If and when there are any, the info will be at the top of every weather report. And we’ll be launching the first morning report at 4 am.

10:35 PM: Metro has now put some of its system on snow routes – see the map on the right side of this page. Not West Seattle (which is in the “south” zone) yet.

11:23 PM: One commenter noticed the same thing we have – a few power flickers. No outages reported so far, though. Meantime, still looks like less than an inch of snow where we are – wet, though, and weighing down the shrubs.

11:41 PM: First school delay announcement:

Westside School will open at 10:00 a.m., classes to begin at 10:15 a.m. There will be no Early Care. Administration will watch road conditions and announce a closure as early as possible if warranted.

12:41 AM: Another school delay: Vashon School District will start 2 1/2 hours late. We’ve created a separate story to track school changes – it’s here, and it will be updated as we hear of any more. Meantime, please let us know of any road trouble, school changes, anything else your West Seattle neighbors might need to hear about – text 206-293-6302 and e-mail editor@westseattleblog.com – thanks!

Sealife Response + Rehab + Research, SR3: Learn about it in West Seattle on Wednesday

February 5, 2017 3:29 pm
|    Comments Off on Sealife Response + Rehab + Research, SR3: Learn about it in West Seattle on Wednesday
 |   West Seattle news | Wildlife

A new nonprofit dedicated to marine-wildlife health, SR3 (Sealife Response + Rehab + Research), will tell its story in West Seattle next Wednesday (February 8th). A major goal for S3 is to build the greater Seattle area’s first marine-wildlife hospital. While SR3 may be new as an organization, we’re told its executive director Dr. Lesanna Lahner is well known to those who help marine wildlife here, especially Seal Sitters, which explains that Dr. Lahner is “one of the NOAA-contracted veterinarians who now consult with local stranding networks and perform on-the-beach health exams.” She assisted Seal Sitters last month with the rescue of a seal nicknamed “Hope (at center in SS photo at right).

This Wednesday (February 8th), 6 pm, at West Seattle (Admiral) Library (2306 42nd SW), she’ll speak not only about her organization but also about our area’s wildlife challenges, from the endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales to the sea stars lost to wasting disease. All are welcome; no admission charge.

HIGHWAY 99 TUNNEL: Digging beneath another tunnel

February 5, 2017 1:33 pm
|    Comments Off on HIGHWAY 99 TUNNEL: Digging beneath another tunnel
 |   Alaskan Way Viaduct | Highway 99 tunnel | West Seattle news

Somebody asked us how the Highway 99 tunneling machine is doing. While WSDOT hasn’t had many major updates lately, it’s continuing the routine of publishing distance updates on this page on Mondays and Thursdays, and according to the newest number – 7,499 feet dug, of the 9,270-foot route – it’s now more than 80 percent of the way to the end. The zone it’s in now goes below the Battery Street Tunnel, which will be decommissioned when the new tunnel opens, and beneath the foundation of the Seattle Center-to-downtown Monorail.
