Here at Delridge Day at Youngstown Arts Center, playtime is what the North Delridge Neighborhood Council booth is all about – selling plants to raise the money needed to finish the contribution toward the fab new playground that KaBOOM! will build at Delridge Community Center in mid-July. (You can also sign up to help with the bulid-it-in-a-day project.) Then just steps away, you can borrow a hula hoop and hoop it up:

Part of the celebration is about food, since Delridge is involved with the King County Food and Fitness Initiative — besides the Delridge Produce Cooperative display, which we mentioned earlier, there are free apples available from Tiny’s (which you’ve probably seen at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market on Sundays), and right next door, it’s a taco truck!
Just up the slope behind us, you can even help the Nature Consortium build organic garden beds. This is all happening at Youngstown Arts Center till 5 pm; part of Team WSB is out checking out some of today’s other events, too, including the West Seattle Rock Club’s Rock and Gem Show (the Masonic Hall at 40th/Edmunds, also till 5 pm) – more to come! Another competition’s under way right now – battle of the chefs – with the secret ingredient, Iron Chef style: Top Ramen! We’ll add a clip of that as soon as it’s uploaded. (added 2:46 pm – here’s the video:)
Speaking of food, talked with Galena White of the Delridge Produce Cooperative – they’ve been awarded the $15,000 city grant they were seeking for a mobile produce-providing setup – more details on that as they develop. 4:12 PM UPDATE: The festival’s wrapping up. We have some great video to share a little later – performances including breakdancers. Randy Engstrom, director of Youngstown Arts Center, just gave a closing speech of sorts saying this has been an “amazing” day.
Gorgeous day at Youngstown Arts Center as the Delridge Day festival gets under way. We’re actually outside, east side of the north parking lot, where performances will be happening in a bit, and lots of cool folks are tabling already – we’re right across from Girls Rock! and a couple tables down from Mandy Greer, who’s crocheting a fiber river to be installed at Camp Long next month. More to come – we’re going to drop by the North Delridge Neighborhood Council plant sale raising money for the new Delridge CC playground, just two booths over and drawing lots of attention! They’re raising money to make a relatively small community contribution to the project that will build a playground in a day this July. Also out here in the breezy sunshine, Cari Simson from the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition (she also visited the last Highland Park Action Committee meeting) – kids can drop by and get an “Awesome Animals of the Duwamish” coloring book:

The biggest events include the West Seattle Rock Club (WSB sponsor) presenting its free annual Rock and Gem Show (10 am-5 pm, Masonic Hall) — and there’s a huge slate of outdoor and indoor fun at Delridge Day (11 am-5 pm, Youngstown Arts Center), where we hope you’ll stop by the WSB table to say hi (check back here later for our live coverage). And on the beach, the Alki Volleyball Association opens its season this weekend. Beautiful night for dancing, indoors and outdoors … that first video is from The Kenney, which had a “Senior-Senior Prom” tonight, with high-school seniors mingling with Kenney residents. The Las Vegas sign in front of the band is in honor of the “Rat Pack” theme. (Note in the video, that’s Kenney CEO Kevin McFeely taking a turn on the dance floor, off to the left at one point.) Completely different dance style a few miles southeast, for the Devil’s Dance Parade in White Center — an Afro-Peruvian costumed dance troupe started at 15th/Roxbury, wound its way through the business district, south, then west, then north, and wrapped up at Cafe Rozella:

A Father’s Day tradition at Providence Mount St. Vincent is to host a Classic and Antique Car Show for our residents and for the community. We’re looking for owners of such vehicles to display their cars and chat with folks on Sunday, June 21st from about 11 am until 3:30 pm. It’s always a good time. There’s a small competition for best entry in several categories. And it’s rewarding to see the great pleasure that this brings to our residents, most of whom are in their 80’s and 90’s. Just about time to look ahead to next weekend, so in that spirit: For the second consecutive year, the West Seattle Rock Club has joined WSB as a sponsor to help get the word out about its ever-bigger annual Rock and Gem Show. 10 am-5 pm both days this weekend, at the Alki Masonic Hall (4736 40th SW: map), you’ll see not only rock displays, but also demonstrations of jewelry and lapidary techniques (as shown in our video clip above, from the 2008 show). Vendors will sell rocks, minerals and jewelry; kids’ activities include “make your own gem tree” and a “hands-on rock table.” And something new this year – come to the show on Saturday for details on how to join a free guided rockhounding field trip Sunday hunting for agates and jasper. Last year, it was “Car-Free Day” and it was in September; this year, it’s “Celebrate Seattle Summer Streets” and it’s in May (three weeks before summer technically kicks in). Whatever you call it, this Sunday is the day when most of Harbor/Alki will be closed to most vehicles – from California Way to 63rd SW – and there are some changes this year, so we checked with the city this afternoon regarding some of the practical details. Here’s our Q/A – the questions were asked by WSB, the answers are from SDOT:
Q (TR from WSB): Will there be robo-calls again this year?
A (Dawn Schellenberg, SDOT): To help make sure everybody knows about the Alki Seattle Summer Streets and invite them to participate, approximately 1,500 calls to businesses and residents in and adjacent to Alki Avenue SW between 63rd Avenue SW and California Way SW are scheduled to go out Wednesday, between 5 and 8 PM.
Q: When will no-parking signs go up?
A: No Parking signs are scheduled to arrive Wednesday. Cars parked along Alki within the event area will be fliered Wednesday evening notifying them of the event and making them aware of the parking restrictions.

Next Sunday, West Seattle’s major waterfront boulevard closes to traffic from Alki/63rd to Harbor/California Way, 9 am-5 pm for “Celebrate Seattle Summer Streets” — the sequel to last September’s Car-Free Day –and it will literally get off to a running start with the first-ever West Seattle 5K Run/Walk to raise money for local schools. West Seattle 5K is advertising on WSB for one last push to get the word out, and in case you missed the first round of announcements regarding this new event and what it’s about, here’s what it’s all about:

Five of the six candidates for Miss West Seattle Hi-Yu Festival (meet all six here) posed for us on Seacrest Pier this morning as the West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club Kids’ Fishing Derby was in its final moments, just yards away. Once again this year, brilliant sunshine for WSSC members to host a temporary fishing pond at the pier for kids 12 and under – we caught two catches on video:
The next scheduled Hi-Yu event is the American Legion Candidates’ Reception on June 11th; the Hi-Yu float, meantime, fresh off its award-winning Sequim appearance last weekend (WSB coverage here), was scheduled to be up north again today, at the Rhododendron Festival Parade in Port Townsend.

Just got an update from Liberty Bell Printing‘s Michael Hoffman, who’s coordinating the September 20th event: “The car show is an official go. We have had a great response from sponsors and are excited to continue planning the event.” WSB is proud to be among the West Seattle Junction Car Show sponsors again this year; there’s still room for more sponsors – the application can be downloaded here. More room for more cars and fun
That last line refers to the fact they’ve gotten permission to close the Alaska/California intersection, as is done during the West Seattle American Legion Grand Parade (July 18 this year!) – not just two self-contained blocks like last year. The show will run from 8 am till 4 pm on September 20th.
With the first-ever Seattle International Film Festival showings in West Seattle now less than a month away, WSB is co-promoting an Admiral Theater event to celebrate this major moment in WS cultural history: An opening-night party on June 5. The party is just taking shape – it will be fun but informal, probably something of an open-house format that night, before the 7 pm showing of the ever-so-appropriate choice “The Admiral.” On behalf of Admiral entertainment director Dinah Brein-McClellan, we’re asking you: Got any ideas for who or what should be part of that party (an all-ages, drop-in event)? Since Furry Faces Foundation‘s big plant sale this weekend is all about raising money to help animals, a bonus event on Saturday fits right in: West Seattle author Val Mallinson will be signing and selling copies of her books “The Dog Lover’s Guide to the Pacific Northwest” and “The Dog Lover’s Guide to Seattle” for the first four hours of the first sale day, donating $1 from each book sale to F3. As F3’s announcement puts it, “Together with her faithful companions Cooper and Isis—also known as “The Wonder Wieners”—Val reveals the best dog-friendly romps, digs, and eats in the Pacific Northwest in these two new guidebooks.” She’ll be there 10 am-2 pm tomorrow (Saturday); the plant sale is 10 am-4 pm Saturday and Sunday; the location both days is 3809 46th Ave SW (map). And did we mention the plant sale also will offer pet-adoption opportunties? in addition to the “1,200+ healthy, nursery quality plants at reasonable prices, beautifully suited for Pacific NW gardens” – even more details here.
Another excuse to think “sunny … warm …” in the middle of today’s drippy chilliness: The virtual suggestion box is now open for the West Seattle Junction Outdoor Movies on the Wall series, which draws hundreds of people to the courtyard (seen above in a photo from last summer) between Dr. Wolff and Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) for six summertime Saturday nights.
