TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Tuesday, from the roads to the water

(Live view from the west-facing WS Bridge camera; other cameras are on the WSB Traffic page)
One note so far this morning: If your commute is on the water, the West Seattle Water Taxi is scheduled to be back, per King County, though Melissa Ann is scheduled to make the run, with Spirit of Kingston out for now.

There is a rear-ender partially blocking right lane of Faunteroy just before Diva Espresso. Causing minor backup up Fauntleroy.

I am so angry at all the inconsiderate people who chose to place their personal packages on seats while the bus is standing room only. They dont even look up from their cell phone or just ignore people standing. Now I suppose the bus driver can’t say anything (they usually don’t despite these people sitting near the front-not blaming them). If you don’t have a lap, try the floor under your seat and consider yourself lucky you got one! Also, for people that have a backpack more than 5″ wide, consider taking it off and placing it on the floor for the ride. It will help a packed condition. You pack is shoving people around during the tight squeeze that is reality on the bus these days.

Don’t be bashful in asking people to move their packages from seats. I just assume they are totally oblivious of their surroundings. They have ears plugged into their gizmo and their eyes are transfixed by the screen they adore.

Bus_rider, what do these people say when you ask them to move their bags so you can sit down?

  • East Coast Cynic August 13, 2013 (10:42 am)

I don’t see people putting bags on seats very often, but when they do on occasion, there is a motivation other than obliviousness, e.g., keeping people they don’t like from sitting next to them (dark skinned people, young people, etc), then moving the bag when they see somebody approaching that they deem tolerable.

I gently ease myself into a seat with a bag while saying “pardon me” at the same time.

Make people aware of these things bus rider I do it like this ” ok I am gonna go ahead and take that seat where your bags is please, yeah! ” …. “Uh ok” …”Alright, Thank you! ” done.

I don’t typically take the last seat unless no one is standing. The people I see with packages on the adjacent seat are not only on the phone, some seem to be well aware of the conditions on the bus. I once looked the wrong way at a man who was taking a whole bench seat who appeared to be able-bodied (and was according to his physical movement shortly thereafter) and he shouted threatening at me and swore. I sense there are people who I feel like it’s not safe to engage either. Now I choose not to sit or respond to hostility. I would like to know if the bus driver can suggest on a packed bus as it was today on the C at 7:30am leaving the junction if all in the front that didn’t need to sit could stand so we could accommodate people more comfortably. I see people ignoring people with canes, casts, pregnant, etc. It all feels so cruel. I’m sure they won’t read this though. Writing metro doesn’t get any response. Thanks for letting me vent.

I always try to make room for others and I normally give up my seat when the bus gets crowded. Of course, it seems that about 1% of the males give up their seats these days. They obviously didn’t grow up with my dad who would rearrange my backside if he saw me remain seated with a lady standing in the aisle.
    .
Perhaps you could get Metro to print up a couple of those informational cards on “preferred” bus etiquette as opposed to the “minimum” standards.

Totally agree with you two about proper etiquette on bus and although my ealier post may lead one to assume that I am selfish when it comes to bus riding my experience tell me the opposite now not always but most the time. Am currently north of Seattle where here in Island County its rural bus ridership and a joy oh and free ,no fare. If you ever want to ride the bus in King County and have a great 4 to 5 hour tour of various environments go to mehva.org and check their scheduled tours throughout the year on Metro historic fleet of retired buses.

Bus_rider, by placing bags on the seat next to them, it helps to prevent social interaction with others.

    It’s called the “Seattle Freeze”.

Sorry, comment time is over.
